celebri_tea two months after calling it quits with charles leclerc, y/n y/l/n performed her 13th concert in florence and fans are shocked at her performance of cornelia street — a love song that she allegedly wrote for leclerc. clips of her performing the song in a very "angry" and "furious" way have surfaced all over the internet and fans have taken it to themselves to rename it as cornelia street (angry version) or cornelia street (go f*** yourself version).
leclerc and y/l/n called off their engagement barely two months ago and sources close to the pair have come forward with claims that they did not end in good terms.

like. I could have included in that post that I hate taylor swift because when she came to my city back in 2010 and I went to see her as a casual fan, she kept saying the completely wrong city's name the whole concert even after she was corrected, and she also wasted so much time between songs just standing there listening to ppl cheering saying nothing that it turned me off being a fan for life! But I didn't because that's petty and subjective and it's way more important to point out that someone died because of her tour set-up and she frequently has homeless people cleared from the area around her concerts and that she is at a material level making people's lives shit for no legitimate reason.

@ the strange influx of Swifties posting in the anti Taylor Swift tag complaining about getting harassed by anti blogs: in what way does this help you not get harassed
I don’t condone harassment for something as petty as liking the celebrity I don’t but I don’t invade the spaces of the places the type of people that harass me are known to frequent (hence why I don’t tag my posts with JUST TS’s name) and go “HEY!!! You guys need to STOP BEING MEAN TO ME!!!” This is why you have the option to block tags.
Also somehow I severely doubt yall are getting shit on the same level one of my friends did after they talked about TS getting cancelled and got called an entire list of bigoted shit but you didn’t hear that from me
ALSO also you aren’t allowed to whine about other people not being “anti-bullying” enough for your liking and then tag your shit with “anti emo” and say all of Swift’s biggest critics must be emo. This is bullying I fear

CHARLI XCX FT. LORDE - "THE GIRL, SO CONFUSING VERSION"
youtube
We opened July by giving you a Charli remix; we now close July by giving you a Charli remix. Let's work it out in the blurbs, then see you next month!
[7.62]
Julian Axelrod: The girls are fighting. The girls have always been fighting. Sometimes with each other, sometimes with their labels, usually with themselves. But even in a year dominated by petty beef, the girls are rarely fighting on record. Leave it to Charli to realize pop music is all wrestling and execute a perfect reverse heel turn. The week BRAT dropped, pulling back the coke-stained rug to reveal a trap door of professional insecurity, fans and critics clung to "Girl, so confusing" as the last vestige of the carefree club romp we were promised, spawning a million think pieces about which curly-haired brunette started the beef. Bringing Lorde into the mix one week later was at once an escalation and denouement, negating the feud narrative and digging down to the real emotions buried beneath its glossy sheen. Charli resents Lorde's success, her flakiness, and her critical acclaim. Lorde sees Charli as a 365 party girl too cool to acknowledge her, let alone invite her to collab. It's all so insular and meta and self-obsessed and earnest and honest and real, to the point where it's almost too intimate to witness. But it's a testament to Charli and Lorde that the whole thing doesn't topple under its own weight, and hearing them write to each other's style makes you realize they have more in common than just hair. The girls are talking. The girls are collaborating. The girls are working it out on the remix. [9]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Iconic! Culture-changing! This could have been a podcast! [5]
Andrew Karpan: Upon release, it was funny to hear the speculation that this record was about Lorde, in that way that it is always funny to know something that feels intimate and real about a roving symbol of pop phenomenology. At any rate, it was satisfying to hear that we were right. Turning this from subtext to text feels like a decisively modern gesture, a living and breathing genius dot com annotation, something one could easily confuse for Taylor Swift’s 1989 rollout or any other kind of “this phony fake friends fake girl power shit” -- but I’m less inclined to be cynical, even in the meme economy of it all. The fiction of these two people with their relatable problems is played so straight that I practically cried at the end. She rides for Charli! Charli rides for her! Hang it in the Louvre, but down in the back. [8]
TA Inskeep: I've traditionally not been a fan of Charli XCX, for various reasons not worth getting into here. That's relevant because I am thoroughly knocked the fuck out by the next-level-meta "girl talk" dialogue of this meeting-of-the-minds remix. Lorde responds to Charli's verse with a lacerating one of her own, spilling her guts and getting very real; talk about "work[ing] it out on the remix," goddamn. Charli, of course, is expert at riding producer A.G. Cook's hyperpop rhythms, but to hear Lorde matching her as the track heaves and bumps is a shock. This is profoundly soul-baring pop, what with Lorde candidly talking about eating disorders and Charli admitting on her opening verse "I don't know if you like me / Sometimes I think you might hate me." That they're doing this so publicly is frankly stunning. This feels like -- this is -- a true pop moment. [10]
Alfred Soto: They're having fun, and for once one of these interrogations sounds lived-in. The beats pop harder. Listening to Lorde and Charli ribbit around the cheerful electro-frogs is a visceral pleasure. Few of the problems they describe code as "girl," though, so I'll be the spoilsport. [7]
Katherine St. Asaph: The original "Girl" had three problems, none of which got worked out on the remix. Problem the first: As with hot girl walks and girl math, this stuff is not especially girl-coded. Social anxiety and fake friendships are the human condition! Problem the second: I know it's a fandom joke, so apologies for bringing reality into your memes, but it must be said that basically no one is out here seriously comparing Charli XCX to Lorde, at least that I recall. I did a quick search to prove that I hadn't gaslit myself for a decade, and all I could find was this interview; which was almost definitely a bit; this anecdote about a taxi driver, which is mostly telling about the tastes of taxi drivers; and this Vox piece, which is... not good (or if you want to be charitable, maybe also a bit). In a music world where half the girls are regularly compared to half the other girls, that's an honestly impressive display of how much something hasn't happened. I know that none of us are privy to the actual lived history of Charli and Lorde's friendship, and I can certainly admire Charli stoking a grudge for 10+ years. But the emotional stakes just don't feel as dramatic as they've been hyped to, and thus the Internet inside my heart remains unbroken. Problem the third: There's also a song beneath the parasocial moment-making, and it sounds like "Take My Hand" but not as fun. [6]
Will Adams: Will I be sent to the gallows if I admit that this pairing had about the same emotional impact on me as when Taylor and Katy reunited in the "You Need To Calm Down" video? [6]
Hannah Jocelyn: I got thrown into the fire when it comes to female friendship, and honestly I still don't get it. There are entire movies about how nobody gets it, men just assuming women disappear into each other without a man to anchor them. I feel like cis women have the same bafflement, and they've been women for longer than I have. The questions are the same: do you like me? What do you need from me? Do you desire my company? What can I be, and what do I look like from this particular angle? Am I the one you tell your fears to? Do we have the same hair? Do you want to be me? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is in the tracklist right after the SOPHIE tribute of “So I”; it’s the same push-pull dynamic, the fascination and the fear of getting too close. Lorde’s devastating verse reveals the insecurities underpinning her decade of coolness, but she manages to add another quotable to her pantheon at the same time: “let’s work it out on the remix” is as sweet as “you buy me orange juice” and “down the back, but who cares, it’s the Louvre." I don’t care much about the rivalry (if there really is one) and don't need to, and that lack of care for extraneous knowledge is why I don’t quite love Brat like the rest of the internet. The juxtaposition between electroclash and Real Feelings occasionally feels like a gimmick, but the best songs make the melancholic subtext into text. This one, with its flanged chorus and cyclical chord progression, gets across the angst underneath the blurry JPEGs and silly memes. [8]
Taylor Alatorre: It's unfortunate that the zero-sum economy of the pop remix led to the excising of the song's most crucial lyric: "Think you should come to my party / And put your hands up." Apart from its now-obsolete function as a barely veiled clue, it encapsulates the nervous mixture of resentment and admiration that bleeds through both versions and that is so hard to portray sympathetically, let alone with such an impish wink. Charli, as someone who attended more warehouse raves than I did in the early 2010s, had more of a reason to puzzle over that particular line from "Team," to shake her head and wonder whether this post-twee moralizing was really what the kids were into – "the kids," of course, being those three to four years younger than her. Like, it just seems so childish to be genuinely bothered by the chorus to a Flo Rida hit, doesn't it? And yet Charli XCX still goes by the MSN screen name she had when she was 14. The "girl" in the title is as much an age signifier as it is about gender, and the humanizing awkwardness of the remix is a product of its function as an intermural high school reunion, the kind of event that's "confusing" by necessity even if it goes well, which this one does. Your Pop Class of 2013, 'til infinity. [7]
Jonathan Bradley: In 2011, an eternity ago, Drake offered Kendrick Lamar an entire track on his Take Care album, giving the then up-and-coming Lamar space to talk over his worries about fame and the professional anxieties he felt regarding his more successful host. "React like an infant whenever you're mentioned," Lamar recalled of the Canadian. "He said that he was the same age as myself, and it didn't help cause it made me even more rude and impatient." Having worked it all out on the remix, surely no trouble between the two would ever rise again. So confusing! In 2024, Lorde and Charli XCX connect to puzzle out some feelings, and it works better as an event than a single. Lorde is a savvier writer than Charli and works away at old wounds and insecurities with a sense of intimacy that only appears artless. Unfortunately, the production runs her through filters and bleeps that mold her presence into simply another type of Charli, dispelling the tension created by bringing these two women together. Blame it on Ms. XCX. [5]
Jackie Powell: The beauty of this remix is how it shines a light on how women in pop in 2024 deal with "diss tracks" -- although, to be honest, the remix makes me question whether "Girl, so confusing" really was one in the first place. Diss tracks often don't reveal complex emotions but just function in a universe filled with envy and pettiness, but this remix reveals the chaos that resulted from poor communication, fear, body issues, anxiety and depression. Both Charli and Lorde admit that the confusion of being a girl is a result of comparing your insides to someone else's outsides, a mental exercise that's often destructive but difficult to stop. "It's you and me on the coin/The industry loves to spend" is their acknowledgment of what came across as transparent and icky on Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us." Also, Lorde sounds the most compelling she has since 2017's "Melodrama"; while I always prefer less Auto-Tune than more, her talk-singing with audio distortion behind her vocals reminds me why she was so beloved. Her messaging is focused: Lorde at her best. Her vocals are dark: also Lorde at her best. What I find most fascinating here is the choice of words during the final pre-chorus. Charli and Lorde sing that they "ride for each other" after working this out, which sounds more sincere than singing that they now magically love each other. It's not an artificial "love ya," but the more sincere "I see you and I know now what you've been through." I'm actually quite jealous of how seamless this appears. Charli and Lorde are somehow giving me some hope that maybe my own friendship breakups could have been resolved by something like this. [8]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Too many friends, not enough time to keep up. Too much life. Too much work, too many health issues, too much doomscrolling. Too much fun and connection and joy had together, but then rewinding it back, wondering whether everyone else felt the same way. Too much anxiety, becoming paralysis, becoming withdrawal. Too much wondering, "Did people notice I was missing? Should I reach out? Is this made up in my head, and if so, why?" Too many panics, trying to find the exact date of their birthday. Too much energy spent internalizing the loss—or even the potential loss—of friends as my own fault, not enough time spent understanding circumstance and accepting change. (Coincidentally, too much “Bad Friend on repeat, god bless.) Too much time wasted not reciprocating the love of others, when they easily and excitedly extended the grace that I didn’t extend to myself. Too much adulthood, so confusing. But in this song? Just enough. Just enough sweat, enough mess, enough of the internet going crazy. Just enough payoff for being terminally online. Just enough intrapersonal catharsis, brought by talking it out, and making it clear that you do indeed ride for each other and will always “work it out on the remix.” Just enough tears shed, understanding that others, including the ones I idolize, can feel the way that I sometimes do. Just enough possibility of redemption. Just enough hope for salvation. [10]
Nortey Dowuona: Two things I learned today. 1. Lorde is still her. 2. We need to re-evaluate Solar Power. [10]

If you just want the song analysis, skip to the next banner. However, I do think the context added by my rambling is at least interesting.
Hey, so remember how yesterday, I opened my analysis post with a comment about how I try to analyze the songs without analyzing Taylor Swift's life, because I feel it's limiting to my ability to understand the song. It's not a form of analysis I'm very good at either, frankly.
I feel like that comment goes especially so for But Daddy I Love Him. Because I was certainly there for the rat-filled fortnight, as in, he literally played guitar for Phoebe Bridgers at my show. And there's a lot I could say that has already been said, more eloquently and by people far more qualified.
I'm a biology student, not a sociologist. But as an Indigenous woman, there is a level of hurt that comes from the people we admire tolerating racism within their spaces, and how that can often play into revealing a pattern of behavior. On the opposite hand, I can see the annoyance (and indignation) that she was held more accountable for his actions than he was. Indeed, I believe that this is what the line "[My good name] is mine alone to disgrace" refers to. On the other, other hand, the whole situation leaves a powdery, bad taste in my mouth.
And now to never talk about that again, because I don't feel qualified to give you a conclusion on it. I'm still listening to the music, after all. The rest of my analysis will be from the perspective of the song as a story, not as diary, my preferred modus operandi.
I wanted to say all that as set up in: I didn't know what to think about this song. I was unsure what angle I wanted to talk about this song from, because divorcing it from the backlash was hard. She literally says "Scandal does funny things to pride," and we'll talk about that later.
Initially, I thought about covering against the grain readings. Recontextualizing the song completely, giving it a new meaning. I thought about maybe covering the history of forbidden romance as a genre (and its many evolutions, from ironically, interracial love stories to queer romance.) I even thought about talking about the Little Mermaid, tying the song into one of the pieces of iconic fiction, and tying that back into the idea of forbidden romance as a queer reading of straight fiction (Howard Ashman, the lead lyricist for Disney, ostensibly the heart of the Disney Renaissance, was a gay man whose partner accepted his Oscar after he had passed due to AIDs.)
And... none of that worked. There are like, five versions of this post in my google docs that will never see the light of day.
Sitting in standstill traffic trying to leave last night's Hozier concert, I finally came to a conclusion. Well, I didn't. Jean, who's previously helped me on both Little Tortured Poet's Department and My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, made a comment that "Without the rest of the album, [But Daddy I Love Him] reads like any 2003 emo song about a sleazy bassist. Sure, we know better, but the singer doesn't."
And that got me thinking: TTPD is an album that is very much in conversation with itself, and Taylor's discography as a whole. I said, "How much does not knowing that wider context change the song?" That's an angle to analyze, baby!
alternative title that wouldn't leave my mind: Dark AU!Love Story, don't like don't read
But Daddy I Love Him is, out of the whole album, the song that benefits from context the most. It is petulant, petty, the speaker digging in her heels on the subject of true love. Indeed, Scandal does funny things to pride. I jokingly referred to it as "Dark Love Story," but the songs are foils ( and likely intentionally, since both songs have to the singer begging "Daddy" to let her have her lover. It also makes sense to foil one of her most popular songs, so that general audiences are likely to make the connection. )
We, the audience, know that the Speaker's romantic interest isn't good for her. We don't like him, because likely, we've already listened to the previous songs on the tracklist, and he's already clearly hurt the singer. The prelude (in the CD and Vinyl booklets) refers to the album as one story, which helps set up this framework in the listener's mind.
However, even in the context of the song, there are scant hints of this. The Speaker, with her rose colored glasses firmly on, still refers to her lover as "crazy."
There's also an interesting tie to her older works, known affectionately on Reddit as Car Lore in the use of cars as metaphor for romance. To quote the seminal essay by u/Alex_Demote, "But for Taylor, being in a car is often the same thing as being in a relationship."
Here, the speaker's lover "[floors] it through the fences" at her request and they only hear "screeching tires and true love" His actions are incredibly dangerous. Even if she's told him to slam through the fence, anyone who actually loves her would say no. A joy ride isn't worth risking your life.
By literal laws of physics, screeching tires are tires that aren't moving. Whether the speaker knows it or not, this romance won't go anywhere, or if it does... well.
I'm an Aston Martin that you steered straight into the ditch (imgonnagetyouback) / Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street (Red) / You were driving the getaway car, we were flying but we’d never get far (Getaway Car)
Though, do we know it's a car? Obviously, this is Car Lore I'm applying here, but our only other references to a land vehicle (aside from the Aston Martin, which is The Speaker) are in So High School, which has it's own parallels to But Daddy I Love Him, see below, and in imgonnagetyouback:
Whether I'm gonna be your wife or / Gonna smash up your bike, I haven't decided yet
And here comes my main point: Driving a car through a fence is reckless, yes, but not likely to be fatal. A bike? A bike? It's only with the context of the rest of the album that the danger our speaker was in comes into clear view. In the song itself, the Speaker only knows he's a bit of a troublemaker, but doesn't mind. She is either blind to the truth of the matter, or looking past it. After all, my boy only breaks his favorite toys. She'd rather burn her whole life down.
But, at the end of the song, her parents "came around" and while the "wine moms are still holding out," the Speaker seems quite happy to be "his lady." Time does give some perspective, but this song doesn't: though the final chorus could be reframed as about a new lover (as she says "Fuck 'em, it's over,") it still reads like everything worked out with her "wild boy."
Like I said on Down Bad, the songs on TTPD are slices of time. This song is the Speaker in a state of blind love, a poisoned honeymoon phase, and without the rest of the album of hindsight, the song just reads... Mean. The teenage prank of "I'm having his baby," refusing to "come to [her] senses," and even referring to herself as "not growing up at all," slamming through fences that someone else will have to fix. It's the exact kind of pettiness that a sixteen year old might pull.
Hey, speaking of sixteen: So High School. If But Daddy I Love Him is a dark take on forbidden love, So High School is its antidote, is that quintessential Boy Meets Girl, and plays deeply into high school cliches. It's also the only other mention of a land vehicle, to my knowledge. The speaker's infatuated with how her lover, "Got [her] car door, isn't that sweet?"
The other, very teenager-y love song on the record is so opposite. It's cheerful, and most importantly, the singer realizes it too. So High School serves to further contextualize But Daddy I Love Him as the speaker's attempt at a rebellious stage, and the rest of the album is her showing how it all crashed and burned.
Conclusion? Her daddy might love him, but he does NOT have land vehicle proficiency. And context can give far more perspective than time ever could.

random method acting thoughts + asks
correct. you are absolutely correct. AND I THINK I MENTIONED THIS A FEW TIMES but every time I feel like method acting drama is unrealistic I remember that nicki minaj exists and sleep well at night. MEGAN DEFENDER FOR LIFE
trust. we've got a tweets heavy chapter. and her comeback tweet is so petty I don't even know how we got here but we're here
WAIT UR SO RIGHT. casual E charm around her neck and she's just like yeah what? no i'm not dating him what are you talking about (yes, she is)
thank you so much ☹️ i've been having the worst week (for two weeks in a row) and kind words like this mean so much to me. the headspace has not been the most fun space to be lately (and sometimes I worry that reflects in what I wrote) but i'm glad that it's made you happy and given you that feeling of love. that's all I could hope for and it almost makes me teary eyed that some shred of that is still there even when i'm not feeling the best 💌
here are my random thoughts:
connie has the online presence of tik tok user @/nmillz. like him single handedly reviving all in my head (flex) by fifth harmony (PLEASE TELL ME YOU'VE SEEN IT) is the funniest thing ever and even the way he talks/what he talks about reminds me of method acting connie 😭
this is so random but mentally in my head, I associate some of the characters with like real celebrities and influencers in terms of aesthetic and vibe, which i've seen some readers do which is so interesting cuz our picks are never the same
like y/n in my head is olivia rodrigo coded. like her having a specific brand (very romantic, lovey dovey) when she was on disney channel (and maybe was asked to lean into really hard) as opposed to guts/sour which is so.....emotional/ jealously/rock that's kind of the vibe I get from that character (or at least where we are headed)
historia in terms of aesthetic/character is sabrina carpenter and taylor swift. sabrina carpenter in terms of aesthetics/looks (she is very much the beauty standard, the dream girl, nonsense outros) and in terms of character is taylor swift? like she's a relatable but there's a part of her that's always going to be untouchable (for taylor that's just cuz I think she's a billionaire/very detached from reality, but for the character that just stems from being so deep in the whole industry type thing that she kind of forgets what matters sometimes)
gabi in general reminds me of billie eilish, in terms of where her character will go. I wanted to include the real life hate that gabi as a character got in the show into the story, but I also feel like that hate sometimes is given to billie eilish. to the point where when she wins grammy's she's apologizing bc she feels like she doesn't deserve it, but at the end of the day...she's one of the most talented artists in our generation? what was I made for? bad guy? happier than ever? they were all phenomenal. gabi can be a great actress but she'll never feel like it!
sukuna and y/n give zendaya and timothee vibes. eren and lana give bradley cooper and emma stone in the variety actors on actors interview.
falco and gabi are walter scobell and leah sava jefferies in terms of dynamic and vibes. I will die on this hill.
eren and y/n are andrew garfield/emma stone (ref: she was like a shot of espresso), danielle galligan/calahan skogman (ref: matching tattoos), daisy ridley jones/paul mescal (ref: undeniable SOMETHING)
hyla just has kardashians/nicki minaj level audacity. like kim wearing a purple dress and posting a story w/ speak now...nicki minaj ai generated diss track like that's her.

Hiiiiii me again so prepare for a novel length ask 😵💫 sometimes I just can’t shush.
I agree with you soooooo much about the finale and Agatha/Rio. It was so interesting to watch it unfold - like the almost kiss in the forest? My impression of that was Agatha had received special treatment from Rio because of their relationship (which we got confirmation of this) and that she had a moment she thought that happened again - that somehow Rio had given Nicholas back as Billy. And Rio knew that, too, which is why she stopped Agatha from kissing her - Agatha was having soft, grateful feelings to Rio, thinking she had her son back - and Rio couldn’t let her believe that. Or didn’t want her to.
But I agree, they aren’t getting back together - Agatha made that hella clear. Even if she still has feelings for Rio, she can’t get past the loss of her son. Rio took Nicholas, and while it was her job to, there are some things that just can’t be repaired.
I also admittedly laughed really hard when Agatha came back as a ghost. Not only did she keep Rio from getting Billy, she siphoned Death’s power in a farewell kiss, and did…whatever she did, to become a ghost and keep Rio from taking her spirit. Total power move.
Plus..Rio does not like ghosts at all. I wish I could stick it to my ex in that next level petty of a fashion.
Ghost!Agatha x Reader has wriggled its way into my subconscious, so there’s that, too. Ahem.
Was Eras completely magical? Did you go with your wonderful girlfriend? Details on your outfit, please? 💜
Also also, sending you a huge hug on the post about your mother. I am so sorry you have to live that way. I live in a red state and while my family is VERY BLUE, my heart breaks for anyone who doesn’t feel they can be safe and supported with their family.
I hope you’re having a lovely night. 💜

Hi my friend <3 (my response is sooo long so I’m gonna cut it hahaha)
Oh wow I really like your interpretation on that moment between Agatha and Rio in episode 4. I almost took it as a warning, I guess, or to maybe set Agatha's expectations. Because yes absolutely Agatha has received special treatment, like Rio said more than any mortal before her ever did, and I think she's aware to some extent the power she holds over Rio. What's interesting to me when looking at their relationship, is the majority of the manipulation comes from Agatha. It's funny that the personification of Death doesn't hold the upper hand, but I do think it's very fitting with Agatha's character. Anyways, I kind of saw it as Rio warning Agatha, 'that boy is not yours and he shouldn't be here'. And I think her reasoning on that definitely was because she still had feelings for Agatha, ya know? Taking Nick destroyed them, and maybe in her mind she thought 'well I'm warning Agatha, so it won't be an issue. He's another woman's son anyways'.
Gosh that was way too long, hahaha. But yes I completely agree! I am super intrigued to watch them interact in the future...especially with Tommy now being back. I fear Rio is not gonna be too thrilled with Agatha doing all of this for another woman's kids LOLL can't say I blame her. And the Agatha ghost bit SENT ME. Taking ghosting to a new level of petty, in true Agatha Harkness fashion <3
I'm really playing around with a ghost!Agatha fic!! I'm sooo behind on writing but the idea I have is kind of depressing, lol but I'm gonna try and think of a more upbeat version.
Oh my gosh the Eras Tour was actually one of the best nights of my entire life, no exaggeration. I love Taylor Swift, she's on a good portion of my writing playlists. I actually started crying when it started, which is embarrassing af but I don't care!! And yes! I went with my girlfriend (who acquired the tickets, she's a rockstar and we love her), and one of my friends & her girlfriend! I love the song Maroon (which she played a night later rip haha), so I found these sparkly burgundy pants and a maroon themed shirt and paired with Nikes that had a burgundy swish on them.
Also thank you for saying that <3 It's really hard being in a mainly conservative family. I'm genuinely so happy that your family is voting Blue, at this point it just feels like a difference between having morals and not. I'm also tired of these past few elections feeling so stressed, idk, things have just taken such a drastically dark turn and I hate that we ended up here. My response is SOOO long and I apologize but I hope you're well, thank you so much for the ask <3 (I'll post a pic of the concert separately because this is already so long asdhasfhjas)

One of my biggest regrets in life is that, after breaking up with my extremely abusive ex, I wasn’t as chaotic as Taylor Swift or Conan Gray bc I literally have all of the anger and none of the closure.

just want go chime in and echo what’s being said about Taylor’s personality common criticisms of Taylor Swift honestly really hurt me bc so often it’s the same criticisms leveled against me for my autistic/ADHD symptoms. Fake or cringey or “quirky!” or annoying. “There’s just something wrong with her.” Even the weird petty ones that are like “allergic to serving” bc like. I don’t dress well either lol and I never will and why should any of it matter. Again not diagnosing her with anything it’s just crazy how when her name is brought up it gives everyone license to be as horrible as possible in every direction.
and it’s so funny because i have NEVER understood people shitting on her personality because she’s always been so relatable and so fun and i just see myself in all her goofy little antics and all her little side comments and just !!!! her!! but again im not diagnosing her or saying she’s got this or that but i just love her personality so much

sucks to unstan someone you spent 15+ years supporting - yeah, I feel ya. I unstanned at the beginning of the month. It is weird. I have a weird yearning sometimes to listen to the music but I needed a clean break. I am not saying this will last forever, but this past year has made me kinda hate her in a weird way? Hate is too strong a word. But I just am not into it anymore. I have never idolized her. She has always been a pretty obvious white woman feminist only angered by stuff that affects her. But this year has been on another level. I think becoming an official billionaire was definitely the tipping point. There is no such thing as an ethical billionaire. She is hoarding her money and I can't rage on the guys who do that while giving her a pass. It also seems to have affected the aura around her. Even around Midnights release there was still something refreshing and down to earth about her. That has really vanished. I've been here since Fearless so it sucks but also has allowed me to put more energy in discovering other talent.
yeah exactly. it’s not hate, i don’t think i could ever hate her like ill always have this nostalgic love for her bc she’s always been my safe space. but it’s kinda similar to finding out that santa isn’t real. like oh! all that love and respect and support just….not the same a year ago. the release of midnights definitely brought a shift and i didn’t want to feel it. but it definitely become more evident last year. i literally would defend her to the ends of the earth but she doesn’t feel like the same taylor anymore, and im not about this high school popular girl persona at over thirty years old it’s just annoying. i was so afraid of the taylor swift overexposure during folklore- but damn i guess i didn’t expect it to get to her head. but it feels like it has. the disappointment is so real and it hurts lmao. like i have a whole ass shrine dedicated to her and it used to bring me soooo much joy and happiness and i now i literally don’t even like to look at it (ill prob end up selling most of the expensive items and keep only a few sentimental things) but bro being a swiftie was such an big part of my personality- and snd it feels like it died! there is no such things as a ethical billionaire, but i thought for sure taylor would be the one. but the fact of the matter is that at the end of the day she is no better than any other greedy billionaire.
ugh soooo true, if it’s one thing i’m thankful for it’s the freedom to explore other artists and musicians. i still listen to some taylor here and there, but a year ago today she would have been my #1 still, and she has definitely fallen down the ranks (but hey, maybe it’s for the best!)
anyways, i’m glad someone else is feeling similarly so i don’t feel like a huge bitch 😫 🫶🏻 like genuinely with the mix of meathead, palestine, the environment, and petty rich people drama…taylor has shown where her priorities lie and it’s unfortunately not aligned with who i choose to support
#answered#anonymous#don’t meet your heroes they’re all fucking weirdos!!! truer words have never been said tbh#every time i need a reason to be mad ill think about the 3.5 million dollars she essentially gave to the nfl/ that team specifically 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Angry woc anon here, lol. I totally agree with you, what a lovely response. And thanks for absorbing my rant, lol -- I'm so pissy about this and have so few outlets. And uh, here comes another one? It really is so hard in fandoms. B/c like, just as you said, we're all here to discuss her, so ofc we're going to talk about things like who she's dating. And yeah, she's a public figure, and like ... public figures affect the political landscape. And that can be fuzzy. But I feel like ... as you said, there are people treating this like actual activism. And I have some sympathy for that, especially for younger fans -- this is the only sphere they really have a voice. But I think something that is really true about female-dominated fandoms is 1. we're eager to tear ourselves/the women we love apart b/c there's a built in cookie/jolt of self-esteem/whatever for the girl who shits on other girls, and 2. we police the shit out of our fandom, out of all proportion to real-world issues, b/c we know, on some level, how huge those issues are, and are terrified by them, and our attendant helplessness. Standing up to actual men is terrifying and subjects you to vicious, insane cruelty. And we're dealing w/ this shit irl every day of our lives. So we freak the fuck out at Taylor like she's suddenly got an Aryan Nation tattoo and not, yknow, getting some sleazy-but-worshipful rebound dick after a tough breakup. Because it feels like doing something, when actually doing something is so, so, so much harder, especially for women. Tbh I feel like Azaleia Banks in the only person with the right take rn -- like, girl, you can do better! You deserve better! But also, goddamn, this breakup is devastating, she's on a completely unprecedented tour, she's living under insane scrutiny every damn day, she's a once-in-a-generation genius, and because she's a woman, she also needs to be very hot and in high heels as she does it. And she's 33. She knows it only gets harder from here. So, like ... I get it. Joe checked out, and MH, for his faults, clearly KNOWS she's spectacular. I get it. It's not great, but shit, I get it, and I'm going to give her grace. Like we do for men, even when they do actually objectionable shit. The truth is, which I think a lot of "THIS IS ACTIVISM!" Swifties don't want to face, is that Taylor dating MH effectively doesn't fucking matter. No one is looking at this and saying "Gee, I'm going to join the alt-right because Taylor Swift is soothing herself with a sleazy indie dude!" Even just in terms of "what is this normalizing" ... as a social worker who has had to reckon w/ that question in a variety of contexts, it's patently absurd to freak out over this and not, like, the thousands of songs on the radio every day that treat women of color like animals. Or how about the ones that glorify beating them and treating them like shit? Or like, the thousands of online spaces that explicitly tell men that Jews are the reason they're stuck in a dead-end job? I know a lot of people think this is whataboutism, but there is a material difference no one who actually does this work can ignore between these things. There are orders of magnitude that matter here, and ignoring them is putting one's own petty, privileged bs before actual, active suffering. The truth is, the vast, vast majority of people who like Taylor don't know who MH is and never will. They hear there's some "drama" and shrug. And the other truth is, this has blown up because we looooove getting together to rake a woman over the coals. I know that BECAUSE I'm a woman of color with a background that spans multiple countries. No matter where I am, I can depend on one fact: People love hating women. This just isn't that fucking different.
i'm not lying when i say reading this ask made me really emotional because not only do i feel like you understand the depth of my feelings on this topic (the misogyny and racism, but also the way the fandom is handling it), but you've also articulated feelings i didn't know i had. i'm really grateful that you took the time to express this and share it with me because, truthfully, i feel less alone in my perspective. and i know we've been saying "it's not that deep," but like. it's not, but it is.
that last part probably didn't make sense. but i just want to call out a few things in your ask that really stood out to me and i want to emphasize:
But I feel like ... as you said, there are people treating this like actual activism. And I have some sympathy for that, especially for younger fans -- this is the only sphere they really have a voice.
2. we police the shit out of our fandom, out of all proportion to real-world issues, b/c we know, on some level, how huge those issues are, and are terrified by them, and our attendant helplessness. [...] Because it feels like doing something, when actually doing something is so, so, so much harder, especially for women.
There are orders of magnitude that matter here, and ignoring them is putting one's own petty, privileged bs before actual, active suffering.
No matter where I am, I can depend on one fact: People love hating women.

Despite all the petty things Taylor Swift has done, I’m curious, why do you support her? Is her music that good to you?
When did I ever say that I support her? All I said is that sometimes people read way too much into her lyrics and it simply isn't that deep.
Taylor's a very polarizing figure and don't get me wrong she does annoy the crap out of me sometimes, but I don't think I've ever quite had the same level of investment in her than most people seem to? I'll comment on stuff she does bc she's kind of an unavoidable figure of pop culture, but other people either really love her or really hate her, and I'm sat here like, well. I don't think she's a good person, but she's not the worst person in the industry by any means. Her music is alright. I wouldn't pay to see her in concert or for one of her ridiculous vinyls, but I always listen to her albums when they come out and usually find something to like. Some of her songs are better than others. I have criticism of her music and how the fact that she surrounds herself with sycophants who tell her exactly what she wants to hear has completely kept her from growing as an artist, but I also think sometimes people who hate her just don't understand that the appeal of a Taylor Swift song is not necessarily the actual lyrics (which sure, are pretty basic once you take them out of context), but a combination of lyrics and music and tone.
I have zero investment in trying to make her look better or worse than she is. You can tell me she's garbage for x and y and I'll probably agree with you tbh, but I'm not gonna apologize for enjoying her music. I don't think she's actively causing harm on the same level as someone like JKR (well, expect to the planet, but show me a billionaire whose jet usage isn't fucking ridiculous). Taylor's petty feuds are with other celebrities, she's not targeting minorities or using her wealth and power to fund hate groups. If and when she does, I'll stop listening. In the meantime, I'll like the songs I like, and just keep not particularly caring about Taylor Swift the person.
#taylor swift#anti taylor swift#i don't blame anyone who hates her guts i've just never reached that point where my opinion of her as a person#affected my enjoyment of her music#although this last album is testing me!
