Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Everyone likes truffles, and finding them isn't a problem at all for the peccary! Also known as javalinas, these small pigs are able to detect truffles, tubers, and bulbs, as well as delicious worms and grubs, up to 8 cm (3 in) below the soil's surface!

First I just want to say i enjoy your blog, second I wanted to ask if you have a favorite corvid? I love corvids, my favorite is the bluejay (also my favorite bird) and the steller’s jay and the ʻalalā (hopefully that’s spelled right) are both on my bucket list of birds I want to see
Thank you so much! I did recently answer that question, and the answer is Green Jay.
Here are some more photos of them...

Some ornithologists consider the Green Jay to be a subspecies of the Inca Jay, C. yncas, but most now consider the Green Jay to be a separate species.

That is untrue! Peccary are tayassuidae and pigs/hogs/swine are suidae, BOTH are even-toed ungulates. They are still cousins (they're cousins to hippos too!) even though peccary are closer to deer evolutionarily. Being related to camels is a myth that gets repeated even by "educational" sites. Same kind of people that keep saying they aren't related at all.

Note
javelinas aren’t actually pigs tho.. it’s not the same 😔
ooc: They’re in the same suborder :) They’re interesting because they are most closely related to Pigs and Hippopotamuses apparently.

Via Javelina hunter
ooc: Javelinas are in the family Tayassuidae which is pretty close to Suidae pigs but not quite (remember that after family goes genus and then species)

A poster with all the Tayassuidae species and subspecies along with the conservation status of each of them.

Follow my blog of all the Species  I am moving to Instagram eventually: Species of the World

I am selling the poster of the Tapirus (Tapir) family along with the Rhinotermitidae (Rhinoceros). Soon I will put this poster on sale but I want to make some posters for some of the genus of this family.

Have a look following the link: Red Bubble store
