Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Everyone likes truffles, and finding them isn't a problem at all for the peccary! Also known as javalinas, these small pigs are able to detect truffles, tubers, and bulbs, as well as delicious worms and grubs, up to 8 cm (3 in) below the soil's surface!

A very little javelina (aka collared peccary) at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in mid-February 2023. The species does not have a specific breeding season, and young may be encountered at any time of year. Not to be confused with feral hogs or wild boars, the peccaries are native to the Americas and form a distinct family Tayassuidae that is closely related to the Suidae (standard issue pig family). My quick internet search turns up no solid name for young javelina/peccary. "Reds" due to their fur color is what I've found.

Note
javelinas aren’t actually pigs tho.. it’s not the same 😔
ooc: They’re in the same suborder :) They’re interesting because they are most closely related to Pigs and Hippopotamuses apparently.
Via Javelina hunter
ooc: Javelinas are in the family Tayassuidae which is pretty close to Suidae pigs but not quite (remember that after family goes genus and then species)

Follow my blog of all the Species I am moving to Instagram eventually: Species of the World
I am selling the poster of the Tapirus (Tapir) family along with the Rhinotermitidae (Rhinoceros). Soon I will put this poster on sale but I want to make some posters for some of the genus of this family.

Tayassuidae or Dicotylidae?
Dicotylidae Turner 1849 is older than Tayassuidae Palmer 1897. But Tayassuidae became more commonly used because nobody uses Dicotyles Cuvier 1816, as it’s a junior synonym of Tayassu von Waldheim 1814. The ICZN has a special clause for family-level names; if prevailing usage switched to the younger synonym before 1961, it can stay in use (Article 40.2). Since the switch from Dicotylidae to Tayassuidae apparently happened before 1961, Tayassuidae remains the name in use. Despite this, some authors still prefer to use Dicotylidae (e.g. Bosma et al., 2003).

Collared Peccary
Pecari tajacu
The collared peccary, also referred to as a Javelina or musk-hog, may resemble a pig, however, peccaries belong to a completely different family than true pigs. The collared peccary belongs to the Tayassuidae family while pigs belong to the Suidae family.
