Apparently it’s official. Rogue taxidermy is now mainstream. Last week I stumbled upon this scene from THE OWL HOUSE, a cartoon series on the Disney Channel, where the main character makes a taxidermy griffin for her art class (Episode 1, Season 1, 2020) Pinching myself and shaking my head at the same time. Griffins are historically my most popular commission request, placing them among my most recognizable signature works for the last 2 decades. They have dominated “taxidermy griffin” Google results for the entirety of that time, beginning with the unveiling of my very first one in 2004, a piece that went viral after it appeared on the front page of the New York Times art section the following year. At that time, and for many years afterwards, my work was the only result search engines returned for that query. In addition to my griffin pictured in the main photo, the cartoon griffin also includes elements from the aforementioned 2004 progenitor that was in the New York Times. As a result of the Rogue Taxidermy art movement an influx of people have been creating taxidermy griffins in recent years, that now also show up amidst mine on Google, however, it’s obvious where the creators of the cartoon came up with the idea for a taxidermy griffin, and whose work theirs is based on (# IYKYK) I think I know the reason their griffin has a tear running down its cheek... The irony is killing us both. “Dear Disney Channel: There’s a tip jar in my bio”…

#TaxidermySculpture ~ My most recent reverie of fur and feather.
I wanted to create an object that felt like it had been transported from a time gone by, but one that also felt equally phantasmal. I have always been captivated by Art Nouveau and Art Deco, which is where I drew my inspiration for the style of this griffin. I thought a video would be the best way to convey the fluid Nouveau-esque lines of its tail and curled wings. The idea for the arched feather antennae came from stylized Deco-era renditions of gazelle with their exaggerated flowing horns, a popular motif at that time. Genuine pearl eyes and 24 karat gold are among the details that add to the elegance of this piece.

TITLE: Absinthe DIMENSIONS: 21” x 12” x 12” MATERIALS: Animal skins over sculpted clay armature
The iridescent green undertones of the black feathers inspired the title – "Absinthe". The purported hallucinogenic effect of its green liquor namesake is said to conjure figments and fantasies, which earned the anise-flavored spirit the nickname “The Green Fairy”.

Sunrise signaling to the creatures of the night that it’s time to retreat back to the shadows. The sun hits the leaded glass windows in my house at just the right angle this time of year and refracts the light like a prism. #DarkInteriors #GothLifestyle #TaxidermySculpture #FantasyTaxidermy #TaxidermyGriffin #TaxidermyGryphon #Gryphon https://www.instagram.com/p/CDRH_cqgfxg/?igshid=k1nk7x3eb3tx

One of my griffins from over a decade ago. It's one of several I have done over the years that were commissioned by cat owners who wanted their deceased pet memorialized in a unique and regal fashion. This one was constructed with a rooster and an orange tabby. Sculptural concept copyrighted and protected under federal registration number VA-1-940-561. Derivative works prohibited under U.S. intellectual property law. #RogueTaxidermy #TaxidermyArt #TaxidermyGriffin #TaxidermyGryphon #Griffin #Gryphon #FantasyTaxidermy #FantasyArt #FantasySculpture #ContemporaryArt #PopSurrealism #LowbrowArt #Mythology #MythologicalCreature #MythologicalMonster #Cryptozoology #Cryptid #VultureCulture #Oddity #Oddities #Curiosities #TaxidermyCollecting #UnusualTaxidermy #RareTaxidermy #CoolTaxidermy #TaxidermyCollection #SarinaBrewer
