✶ . AVOS ◞ ‎ …    ! is a five-member boy group formed by APRICUS CULTURE on january 9, 2014. the group was assembled through the 2013 survival show, GENERATION: AVOS, through which all five members were chosen for the final lineup. the show experienced immense success among the viewing public, breaking previous survival show ratings in favor of the 35 initial trainees.
the final lineup was decided by a 50/50 split of judge input as well as votes from the general public. announced in the final episode of the show, the five members: SANGHYUK, CARTER, IAN, ROMEO, and HWASEONG, had all done considerably well throughout the show's airing with carter in particular being ranked first throughout its duration.
the group made their official debut on january 9, 2014, with the mini-album, SENTIMENTAL, lead by the title track, BLUES OF SENTIMENTS. the debut project received praise as it was made public that the members were largely involved with the creation of the record. their reputation as a self-producing group would continue to be their most powerful draw. nicknamed the 'golden group', their famous midas touch success saw them quickly rise through the ranks becoming their label's most-profitable group, overtaking their successors, NYX and LETALIS in 2016.
much of their success has come wrought with controversy, often self-inflicted by the members themselves. interestingly, their scandals have never seemed to dent their reputation as a powerhouse group, frequently attributed to the pr genius of apricus culture and their hold over the news cycle.
after their record-breaking stadium world tour in 2020, avos entered a highly publicized hiatus in order to focus on solo activities while establishing their sub-label as part of their contract renewal negotiations. this sub-label, STUDIO AVOS, would become avos' main management firm for both group and solo activities as of 2021.

after graduating from high school, sanghyuk moved to seoul in pursuit of an engineering degree, using his dance experience to make money in order to alleviate his mother's financial burdens. he would be discovered by apricus culture training manager, YOO JOOEUN, who managed to convince him to sign on as a back-up dancer for soloists NINE and JIOH from 2011 to 2013. following the departure of a trainee who was scheduled to appear on the survival show, GENERATION: AVOS, sanghyuk earned a last minute spot while receiving vocal lessons in between filming.

CARTER KIM, better known by his stage name CARTER, is a korean-canadian dancer and vocalist. carter was born in toronto, canada on october 15, 1993, to bradley kim, a museum director, and joyce kim, a hotel manager. from an early age, his parents did their best to raise both carter and his sister, cassandra, in the way they believed would best benefit the twins. though their parents were both second-generation korean-canadians, they made sure their children stayed in touch with their korean roots, spending summers in korea and celebrating traditional holidays.
while spending a summer in korea with their cousins, the siblings were introduced to k-pop groups and began growing a love for the industry. eventually, cassandra tricked carter into auditioning for GEMINI INC. in 2010. though both siblings passed the audition, carter was hesitant to accept the offer. after an ultimatum from his parents, carter decided to move to seoul with his sister in order to support her dreams though he was still skeptical.
after a few years of training, carter gained a reputation for his aptitude for both dancing and singing and was selected to take part in GENERATION: AVOS. while he considered it to be an honor, he notably struggled with the korean language and customs throughout the show especially after the departure of his sister from the label. despite this, he managed to rank first consistently throughout the show.
carter was the first member selected to debut in the show's final group: AVOS in december of 2013. currently, carter is the MAIN DANCER, LEAD VOCALIST, and CENTER of the south korean boy group avos, which debuted under APRICUS CULTURE in 2014. carter takes an active role in the production of avos' music with credits on a majority of the group's songs under the producer name MOOD:SUN.

MOON WONHYUK, better known by his stage name IAN, is a korean-american singer and actor. ian was born to his parents in the midst of his mother's medical residency in incheon, south korea on january 29, 1994. shortly after his birth, ian's father took up a position as chief of pediatric surgery at a hospital in singapore to better provide for the family. the moons suddenly moved to dallas, texas, around ian's seventh birthday for unknown reasons.
the sudden move became even stranger after he was adopted by his father's younger brother and his new wife in late 2003 when ian was nine years old. despite this, ian went on to excel both academically and socially in suburban dallas. his natural athleticism awarded him a scholarship to attend duke university to play basketball for the institution. unfortunately, after sustaining a career-threatening injury halfway through his first season with the university, ian forfeited his scholarship citing mental health. with his persuasion of his aunt, ian moved back to south korea to audition for APRICUS CULTURE, to satisfy his life-long interest in music.
after a photo of ian was leaked to the public as a trainee, he was added to the survival show's lineup. despite early popularity for his looks and magnetic personality, ian dropped to the near bottom of the rankings during the second half of the competition. after being saved from near elimination by a judge vote, ian just barely edged his way into the final lineup during the last two episodes.
ian was the the last member selected to debut in the show's final group: AVOS in december of 2013. currently, ian is the MAIN VOCALIST, SUB RAPPER, and VISUAL of the south korean boy group avos, which debuted under apricus culture in 2014. ian is the third most credited songwriter of the group and has sustained notoriety as a successful solo artist, actor, and brand ambassador for prada.

Cannes is the ultimate advertising ICYMI
I try to keep up with what's causing the industry to buzz, but every year projects surface at Cannes that I missed. Here are some of my favorites that I didn't know about until they popped up at the 2023 Cannes Creativity Festival.
Chipotle Doppelgänger
While there are a gazillion of combinations of Chipotle's various ingredient options, agency GALE figured out how to tell when two people somewhere in the country placed the exact same mobile order at around the same time and messaged each where their "Chipotle Doppelgänger" was. Search it on Google and you'll see how much organic attention these received. Case study above. Agency: GALE. Lion: Gold, Data-Driven Targeting
Muskrat Magazine "Missing Matoaka"
The cynic in me couldn't help seeing many purposed-driven Cannes entries and winners as desperate attempts at trophies rather than sincere concern for a problem. But I admire this one for being so innovative and clever in how they attempt to counter the inaccuracies in Disney's Pocahontas. (And, okay, I'll admit that it's a stretch that their "client" is a small publication.) Agency: BBDO, Toronto. Lion: Gold, Silver, and Bronze, Brand Experience & Activation; Gold, Radio & Audio
I see Coke
Pepsi arrived to Saudi Arabia before Coke, so they have more share and spend more on media. “In a region where Coke is the challenger and not the leader, there was still one place Coca-Cola owned: movies and TV shows. So, we turned 100 years of product placements on the big screen into an interactive, shoppable experience using voice [Alexa].” Easier said than done. I can’t imagine what it took to pull this off, but it’s a fun idea. They claim that brand awareness increased 234% as a result. Case study here. Agency: VMLY&R. Lion: Silver, Radio & Audio
Opt Ink
McCann’s client wanted to increase the number of Germans who consent to donate their organs. Their ingenious solution: “a free tattoo designed by renowned ink artist Gara” and offered at 250 studios across the country. They promoted it at tattoo conventions, through influencers, and got a ton of free PR. Turns out 25% of Germans already have a tattoo, so they had a built-in audience. Case study here. Agency: McCann Germany. Lions: Gold, Social & Influencer; Silver, Direct; Silver, PR; Bronze, Direct; Bronze, Media.
Clash From The Past
To celebrate Clash of the Clans' 10th anniversary, Wieden + Kennedy created a 20-minute documentary celebrating the make-believe FORTY-year history of the game. This is reminiscent of the "Make-Believe History of Black Star Beer" which was also done by Wieden and also won big in the award shows. But I think it's okay to steal from your own agency's history.
In addition to the 20-minute documentary – which has was produced really well, especially the old commercials – the game makers invited current fans of the game to play games from Clash's make-believe historic origins. Winner of the Grand Prix for Gaming AND Grand Prix for Entertainment. Case study here. Full documentary here.
Cashback for your jersey's back
Just before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Brazil national team made the jersey they would be competing in available for purchase by fans. The Nike jersey was the most expensive ever. Flash, "a benefits card" that gives cash back for certain purchases, announced on social that they would reimburse half the cost of the jersey if fans put "Flash" on the back of the jersey instead of a player's name. That's a very clever guerrilla tactic that answered a real problem for fans and got Flash a ton of attention. I won't say it was "free publicity," because they did have to pay out a lot to cover half the cost of the jerseys ordered before Nike's website blocked people from putting "Flash" on their jerseys. Case study here. Agency: FCB Brazil. Lion: Gold, Social & Influencer
Sorriso sponsors Sorriso
Sorriso is the name of a Colgate toothpaste and a big shot football player. “Sorriso” means “smile” in Portuguese. Sorriso (the toothpaste) were able to get their logo on the back of Sorriso's (the soccer star) jersey/kit AND wherever the player’s name appeared on stadium signs and TV screens. Then they did the same for a female player with that last name. I saw this one mentioned as a Cannes contender, but it looks like it didn't win any Lions. Case study here. Agency: VMLY&R.
McDrip
To recruit more young employees to work in their restaurants in Sweden, DDB got a streetwear designer to redesign McDonald's uniform. Even if it's still a hurdle to get teens to work at a fast food restaurant, I bet it increased the chances teens would apply to McDonald's ahead of other fast food joints. Case study here. Examples of TikTok here and here. Lion: Bronze, Social & Influencer.
Hilton Waitographer
To show the lengths they go to serve guests, Hilton in the Middle East brought in a professional photographer to train staff people – especially restaurant servers – how to take good phone photos. By TBWA/RAAD, Dubai. (It didn't win at Cannes, but it was in some coverage of Cannes hopefuls. I'm not going to include a link to the case study because it was silly and overlong.)

hihi I adoreee your tattoos omg I've never seen anything like them advertised at any of the tattoo places near me, did you have to like get a specific type of tattoo artist or smthn for them or are they just not advertised cus they're not as common?? sorry I've never had a tattoo before so I don't know much about like, the process?? but I really love how bright and happy yours feel and now I kinda wanna get a tattoo in a similar style !!
Hello!!! Thank you!!
I follow a TON of tattoo artists on Instagram! That’s were I find most tattoos I love. Tattoo artists are, well, artists and that means they will have their own style of art and techniques. I choose artists based on their portfolio. Some tattoo artists can mimic other styles but as an (digital/traditional) artist myself, I’d much rather people come to me for what my actual style is. Like I wouldn’t ask a traditional tattoo artist who mostly deals in black and gray wash to do a pastel anime tattoo.
I suggest you search on Instagram for tattoo artists whose portfolio speaks to you. However, they may not be close to you. I travelled for mine. I’m in Indiana and I planned a big trip going north to Detroit and then Toronto for my recent tattoos.
As for requesting a tattoo, most artists will advertise if their bookings are open or closed. Some will use a form or others will tell you to email them. They will ask you for your idea, size, placement. They may even ask you for photos of that part of your body and even inspiration for the tattoo you want. It’s good to give them images of tattoos they themselves have done that you like. Plus any other reference you have.
After the request is sent, they will confirm the appointment (hopefully if they don’t fill up so fast) and try to lock in dates and time with you. They will also ask you for a deposit, usually 50-100 dollars to secure that time. It’s typically non-refundable to protect themselves for no shows because they will do work/draw up until the appointment. They should have their policy in their forms somewhere.
You most likely won’t see art from them til the day of the appointment. This is for multiple reasons: they are working and you are not the only client they have so they will prep your tattoo closer to the date of your appointment and because they can make adjustments in person on the fly at the appointment. If you love the artist’s portfolio, trust their art ability. It never hurts to ask tho, so if you’re nervous I would suggest asking “when should I expect to see art for my tattoo? What’s your process for when I will be able to review the art?”
Getting tattoos is fun and exciting but also scary because it’s permanent. I always tell people if at any time during the inquiry process, the art review process, the meeting in person vibes, or if you have any doubts, do not follow through with the appointment! You need to feel good when making a big modification to your body!!!
The tattoo artists I went to were all very nice, considerate, accommodating, and easy to talk with. I had a good time with all 3 of them.
They are: Rosie Cole (Detroit), fruitcough (Toronto) and TinyBaki (Toronto).
Oh! And if you like an artist, check out the studio they are a part of! There may be other artists there who do similar-ish aesthetic tattoos there!
If you have any more questions, please ask away!

213341 Art Studio IIIA ⋆ Weeks 5 - Eueuguuughhhh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The plan: make something entirely out of my small selection of bargain bin albums, and present it.
Keeping in mind, the plunderphonics must flow. No further depth to the samples used, presentation is to be entirely encased in its technique - like any artwork produced prior to the invention of the camera.
So I could actually hear the new albums I brought, I ordered this bad boy on TradeMe.
Tumblr media
…and it came not even two days later (albeit twice as expensive as I had hoped).
Without hesitation, I put it straight to work, ‘ripping’ audio all nine of my CDs, to which I stored them neatly both on my PC and on OneDrive, prepped and ready for all my sampling exploits.
Giving them a skimmed listen, I can proudly say that they're all terribly mediocre in their own special way:
The Shadows - Dreamtime: An instrumental soft-rock cover album featuring a pedal-steel guitar that gets old, really fast.
Theo Eastwind - One: Easy-to-forget folk rock with no dynamic flow whatsoever. It's just... loud.
Kim Stockwood - 12 Years Old: Decent, chill pop. I could hear a couple sample-able moments in there somewhere.
Fruit - Here for Days: Another folk rock album?? Slightly more memorable than One, but just as loud.
MC Trey - Tapastry Tunes: Probably the best one out of the bunch, but her voice throws me off - she's Fijian-Australian, why does she have a British accent? She had an interview with Rolling Stone, why does her channel have 274 subscribers?
James Hill - A Flying Leap: Instrumental ukulele album :(
Ylva Skog - Terra Firma: Avante-garde-y classical music, okay sampling material.
Clay Aiken - Measure of a Man: What? You haven't heard of THE Clay Aiken? 2003 American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken? Featuring an NZ-only cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water? Burn in hell, Clay.
Imelda May - Love Tattoo: Another acutally nice album; a whole lot of rockabilly jams! Also, the only album that the cashier recognized.
I also added, from my dad's records, this extra CD to my collection, called “Cool Fever - From Disco Jazz to Jazz House” that, while available in physical form through resellers, cannot be found in any digitally archived form online - and that added spice of obscurity is fine by me.
Tumblr media
John Oswald! We're overdue talking about him. While we've made a fair bit of mention towards the second, isolated invention of plunderphonics in the Bronx; John Oswald's definition of the genre saw more 'academic' origins.
With works stemming as far back as the late 1960s, his time at the Simon Fraser University would see him participating in the 1968-onwards World Soundscape Project (an ecologically-focused wildlife sound collage which is quite self-explanatory); using these sound collage methods, and informed by the literary Cut Up Technique popularised by William S. Burroughs, Oswald would perform various sampling experiments from the mid-70s onwards.
In 1985, Oswald presented to the Toronto Wired Society Electro-Acoustic Conference his essay on plunderphonics - which coined the term. His paper laid out the philosophy behind the genre, and its place within the history - and legality - of music.
He then applied these philosophies with the 1988 EP (and subsequent 1989 album release) - Plunderphonic - with a parodical take on the album cover for Michael Jackson's Bad, where MJ's torso is collaged with a nude model.
This accompanies the central track to the release, daB, which jumbles around the song Bad to an extent not dissimilar to Collage #1 ("Blue Suede") 28 years earlier - to take the 'lowbrow' pop hit and flip it into the 'highbrow'.
youtube
What it accomplishes in its seven-minute runtime is a technical marvel, a satiric time capsule that sounds as fresh as it sounds incoherently groovy, humorous, and even spooky.
Although Plunderphonic was distributed freely and at expense to Oswald, it goes without saying that Oswald landed himself in legal trouble due to the nature of this release; with the Canadian Recording Industry Association ordering the destruction of all undistributed copies.
The music video for daB released in 2016 after two years of production, and visually ensnares the idiosyncrasies of daB to a 'T'. In a later edition of the Plunderphonical Chronicle, I will mention the symbiotic relationship that the genre, in a specific, 'meme-y' form, has had with video editing.
In 1993, Oswald released his magnum opus, the logical endpoint to the genre, Plexure. The following screenshot is taken from the official entry on plunderphonics.com:
Tumblr media
Micro-sampling just about every charting CD release from the decade, Plexure features 20 minutes of "megaplundermorphonemiclonics", with a new sample appearing roughly every second to a total of "1,001 electroquoted contemporary pop stars*" as well as "*including hundreds of morphosoniferous performers".
It's best compared to quickly changing radio stations, but you have to appreciate the technical prowess that goes into an album as DENSE as this.
youtube
It's an intense listen, but I'd recommend it at your Plexure.

The striking patterns and hues of neo-traditional Asian tattoos captivate. The American Old School tattoo style is frequently credited as the source of what we now refer to as neo-traditional tattooing. Because of its vibrant colours and striking lines, it is quite well-known and easily recognised. Often, the drawings are emphasised by dark, shadowy parts and black lines that enhance the color's attractiveness. Using Art Nouveau once more, the neo-traditional Asian tattoo style pays homage to one of the tattoo's recurrent influences. Because Japanese art was being introduced to the West at the end of the nineteenth century, it is well known that Art Nouveau drew extensively from this culture.

Stars Announce ‘Set Yourself on Fire’ Tour
Stars will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Set Yourself on Fire with a tour and new vinyl release. Today, in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their breakthrough album Set Yourself On Fire (SYOF, 2004 via Arts & Crafts), Montreal's Stars announce they will embark on a select North American tour this fall and release a special 20th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue on Arts & Crafts arriving in July, which will feature digital bonus tracks such as "Rollerskate" and "Petit Mort" not widely available on other releases. The album has been lovingly reimagined on 140g opaque red vinyl, housed in a special die cut jacket with printed inner sleeve, 12x24" pinup poster, and a temporary tattoo featuring the iconic flame design. New liner notes written by album producer Tom McFall also accompany the re-issue. It is available for pre-order HERE. SIGNED version available via Stars Patreon HERE. Stars' Set Yourself On Fire 20th Anniversary live dates begin September 18 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, ahead of a two-night stand at Brooklyn, NY’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. The tour will then work its way to three Canadian dates in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto; after a two-week break, the dates will resume south of the border in California and traverse throughout the west, including a stop in Vancouver. All dates are listed below. An Artist Patreon-exclusive Ticket Presale is confirmed for Wednesday March 6 @ 10 am local time, and a General Onsale of this Friday March 8 @ 10 am local time. Artists of effortlessly accessible complication, on Set Yourself On Fire, Stars took our worst fears - both personal and global - and slayed the anxieties with their perfect pop music. Widely lauded as amongst their most ambitious, accomplished, and affecting works of their storied existence, Stars’ Set Yourself On Fire (20th Anniversary Edition) carries the torch of the magical songs that have set so many hearts alight.  Set Yourself On Fire drew international praise from the likes of Pitchfork, The Guardian, NME, Rolling Stone, Q, Entertainment Weekly, and Spin, amongst many others. The album, also regaled across Canadian music press, was nominated for Alternative Album of The Year at the JUNO Awards in 2005, and certified Platinum in 2006. SYOF has seen continued praise and recognition at its 10th and 15th year anniversary marks - a true testament to the album’s staying power. Add to that, a longstanding reverence for the way Torquil's father, Douglas Campbell's voice ushers in the timeless, anthemic words “when there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire” a now iconic phrase in the band’s discography, at the LP opening of “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” - a telltale and powerful beginning for Stars on that album, as well as decades and decades later. The continued love and fervor for this record and their extensive discography alongside the many career accomplishments; from continuous releases to international tours and festivals, to theatrical stages, all attest to the power of Stars.  Rewinding to 20 years ago, a press release from Arts & Crafts reveals a glimpse into the texture of the musical landscape of that time. The heartbeat and heartache the band experienced in crafting this seminal LP is palpable not only in the songs, but all the words that told the story then. “By all accounts, the process of creating Set Yourself On Fire, Stars’ third full-length album – for Arts & Crafts, home to their dear friends and sometime collaborators and bandmates Broken Social Scene – played like scenes from The Shining. During one of the coldest winters on record, the soft revolutionaries set up shop in a cabin offered to them by an odd man they’d met in a local pub, a chap named Alan Nicholls. Turned out he used to play in a classic Montreal garage band in the sixties and currently writes tunes for Robert Altman. Over the mixing board in his country home studio, there was a photo of Alan giving John Lennon a hug. While the snow fell outside, Stars nestled in their cocoon,… https://chorus.fm/news/stars-announce-set-yourself-on-fire-tour/
