2024-11-24: The Rocks of Oskus-ool (Rim 6)
Unusual crystalline asteroids float in surprisingly regular intervals here, forming a spherical matrix. The crystals vary in size, but generally all of them seem to be made of a translucent sandy yellow crystal that resemble hexagonal pillars of rock (imagine if the pillars the Giant's Causeway were free-floating). Each crystal lets out perpetual drone in certain electromagnetic bands, though the pitch depends slightly on the mass of the asteroid. When the drone is converted to a human-audible format, it is said to sound like a beautiful piece of music as performed by an igil, a traditional stringed instrument of Tuva.
Each crystal is highly resonant to these frequencies (and any harmonic multiples), and the energy of the constant drones cause the crystals to naturally congregate in predictable nodes of acoustic stability. This system is stable as long as the background levels of resonant frequencies remain relatively constant. However, many of those frequencies are produced by the systems of traveling spacecraft, and the additional acoustic load causes nearby crystals to vibrate and explode into a shower of shrapnel.
Whenever you enter this hex, roll 1d6 and consult the table to determine which system is causing catastrophic resonance to the asteroids. Failure to deactivate the system will result in serious damage to the ship.
Resonant Systems and Consequences (d6)
Comms. Both sending and receiving of transmissions are included in this system. Perhaps the least consequential system to lose access to...unless you need to call for help.
Temperature Control. Disabling this system causes the the temperature of the ship's inhabitable areas to drop below freezing. Any task that requires fine motor control is done at disadvantage until the ship returns to normal temperature.
Artificial Gravity. Unsecured items float through the cabin, and each time the ship's trajectory is adjusted, each person aboard must roll a DC 17 Dex saving throw to avoid getting walloped by the cabin debris.
Atmosphere Recirculation. Your ship now has a limited amount of time to get out of area, because otherwise you will suffocate as CO2 builds up. EVA suit-based air supplies may mitigate some of this concern if they are present aboard the ship, but they don't tend to last very long.
Main Power. Nearly everything is plunged into darkness and shadow when the main power gets cut. Any tasks that rely on sight will take 1d4 times longer than usual to accomplish.
Navigation. You'll need to fly by sight, manually calculate orbital trajectory (50% chance of ending up in the wrong hex), or rely on an outside vessel to help guide you.
In Tuvan folklore, the igil was said to have been first crafted by a man named Oskus-ool whose prize horse was murdered. The spirit of the horse came to Oskus-ool in a dream and provided instructions on how to make the instrument that would be known as an igil. When the igil was played, it sounded like the lost horse, and Oskus-ool kept playing until the spirit of his horse returned to the world and brought with her a thundering herd of horses.
Each asteroid is like one of the multitude of horses that Oskus-ool's music summoned, and the great herd is ready to stampede whenever the song demands it.

What is Smudging, and How is it Done?
Tumblr media
Smudging is the burning of herbs for cleansing, purification, and protection of sacred space. Smudging cleanses the mind and environment by dispelling any stagnant or unwanted energy. Sage, cedar, juniper, and sweetgrass are commonly used for smudging.
To smudge, light the herbs in a fire-resistant receptacle, and then blow out the flames, or burn them on a hot coal or pressed charcoal tablet. When using charcoal tablets, the smudge bowl should be filled with sand or a flat stone to prevent overheating the container. I recommend cracking a window or door for ventilation and for releasing unwanted energies.
Next, use a feather or your hands to draw the smoke over your heart, throat, and face to open the energy channels of your body and raise your personal power or windhorse. According to Mongolian shamanism, windhorse, or hiimori, can be increased through smudging, drumming, and other forms of shamanic practice in order to accomplish significant aims.
In Tuva, juniper smoke is sacred and an intricate part of everyday life. Sacred smoke encircles the shaman’s patient, family, and yurt or sacred space. It is the smoke of blessing, purifier, prayer sender, and also the extractor of disease. Smoke is also one of the foods for spirits. The spirits eat just as people eat. Tuvan shamans believe that "if the spirits are not fed, the ritual may not go well."
The following is a list of herbs that I use in my shamanic practice. You can use them independently or mix them together in a smudge bowl. Each plant imparts specific qualities when burned. Remember to thank the plant or tree spirit whose body made the cleansing possible. To assist you in creating sacred space:
1. Smudge with the smoke of cedar or juniper for protection, deep cleansing, and the dispelling of negativity.
2. Smudge with white sage or common sagebrush for cleansing, blessing, and for calling in the specific spirits that you require to aid you in the task at hand.
3. Burn sweet grass, the breath of the Earth Mother, to attract and draw in the helping spirits that are called upon.
4. Use copal resin, the blood of trees, to honor the Tree People for providing our first breath, which is spirit, and to call upon the ancestral spirits for their oversight, insight, and protection.
5. Burn Palo Santo, which translated means "holy wood," as an energy cleanser and to attract sacredness and benevolence to a space.
6. Offer tobacco smoke or a pinch of dry tobacco to carry your prayers to the Loom of Creation, thereby reweaving the pattern of existence in accordance with those prayers.

Vladimir Oidupaa Oiun
Tumblr media
Vladimir Oidupaa Oiun was, in a certain way, a hero. He was imprisoned for thirty years and in jail he learnt to play the accordion and put together an album, “Divine Music From a Jail”. Despite being sung in the style of Tuvan Throat Singing (meaning, the lyrics were in Russian, a language I do not understand at all), I consider him one of my favourite artists. It’s one of those cases where words are not important, because the music speaks for itself, perfectly accompanying his beatiful, unique voice. I have recently talked with a friend about the absolute beauty of music, and about how strange it is. They said it was incredibile to think that we know what the music of our ancestors, who lived thousands of years back, sounded like, and then went on considering that should three persons from different countries meet and listen to the same music, at the same time they would all understand it perfectly while simultaneously feeling, possibly, quite differently. And that was when I was reminded about Vladimir Oidupaa Oiun. I discovered his music sometime during the pandemic, either last year or the previous one, and never forgot him. I tried putting into words exactly how I feel when I listen to him, but it was an impossible task. The closest I got was “walking down the road, trying to reach something already lost”. Then in this circumstances it’s often the case that there aren’t many pictures around. I couldn’t find more than 10, but in one or so he does look like the last keeper of a secret only he knows. How crazy is it to think that a man from a distant land, more than twenty years ago, wrote music that travelled the whole world and now it plays in the ears of a 26 year old italian lad? That what makes him a hero to me. What he felt resonates through the years and the lands, and it’s somehow part of my life now.  Anyway, I wanted to share this tracing I made of him a couple of days ago, while the text in the picture is from a youtube comment which I particularly fancied, down a video where he plays

2024-11-29: Angyr-Chechen (Rim 11)
Golden light radiates from the ground and through the thin atmosphere of this volcanic world. Massive flows of lava meander across the planet's surface, constantly changing the geography. Igneous rock formations dissolve and collapse like hollow trees after a fierce storm. The atmosphere is toxic and full of clouds made a pulsing orange by constant lightning. No life is known to exist here, and the planet's inhospitable nature doesn't yet warrant any permanent settlements.
There are, however, two man-made satellites (Boktu-Kiris and Bora-Seelei) in permanent orbit around the planet that monitor the geologic and atmospheric changes on the planet. Bokto-Kiris is tasked with monitoring the geologic changes, while Bora-Seelei tracks weather patterns and searches the clouds for traces of valuable minerals that may have been aerosolized by the many volcanoes. Previous scans have indicated that there are valuable stores of many heavy elements, but they are currently too difficult to extract because they are deep within the planet.
On occasion, some valuable deposits will be ejected to the surface through tectonic or volcanic activity. Those who are well-prepared to take on the challenge and can act quickly have the possibility of scoring a major payday. But more often than not, treasure seekers end up claimed by the planetary inferno. Even the hulks of large vessels on the surface are swiftly claimed by the planet, leaving no trace of their existence once they are covered by the lava flows.
The names of the planet and satellites come from a Tuvan hero tale known as "Boktu-Kiris Bora-Seelei" or sometimes just "The Two Siblings." When Boktu-Kiris dies in a horseriding accident, his shapeshifting younger sister Bora-Seelei attempts to bring him back to life. But the only way she can do that is by finding a way to marry Angyr-Chechen, the daughter of a ruler to the lands of the north named Sang Khan. Angyr-Chechen is often referred to as the golden princess in this tale, and only the person who can overcome a series of difficult challenges can win her hand in marriage. Thus, the name has a double meaning: the golden light from the all the volcanic activity is the more literal part of the name, and the second meaning is related to overcoming the numerous challenges necessary to settle the planet and thus win the marriage of Angyr-Chechen.
---------
Cultural Note: The story of "Boktu-Kiris Bora-Seelei" was not one that I was familiar with until recently, but I found an academic paper that contained a short version of the tale that translates it into English. If you're curious about reading it, you can read it on Archive.org. The story begins on page 7 of the PDF, but the formatting is kind of weird because each line of the story in annotated with two other lines of linguistic notes. Just read the numbered lines and try to tune out the other stuff.

Note
Can I suggest a task for the Turkic peoples of Russia? Like Yakuts, Tatars, and Gagauzes?
Hi anon! Thank you for the suggestions, I apologize that I didn't reply to this once one was posted! But since you sent this, we've done tasks for Yakuts, Tatars, and Gagauzes, as well as tasks for other Turkic peoples of Russia: the Tuvan, Chuvash, and Bashkir. You can find Task 195: Yakut here, Task 196: Tuvan here, Task 197: Tatar here, Task 230: Gagauz here, Task 247: Chuvash here, and Task 249: Bashkir here. We had a lot of fun and really enjoyed making all six tasks lists, and we hope you enjoy them too!
We also have the general "Turkic peoples of Russia" suggestion on our suggested page (linked in the source link below) and hope to do as many groups as possible, including another anon's Khakas suggestion! If you have any more specific group suggestions within the Turkic peoples of Russia broader suggestion, feel free to send them in! (Or if you have any more suggestions, feel free to send them in)!
