Where?!
The titles of each peice
[166] Where are my other mods?
[167] Have you seen Red or Blue?
[168] A clue about the mod's whereabouts...
[169] The letters lie.... right.... I'll find proof... the letters, they lie.
[170] The letters keep coming... I know where to go... but what will I find?
[171] Ive started my journey, I will find them[
172] It's been many days, I miss Red and I miss Blue
[173] No matter where I go, the letters find me, each pushing me to the same location
[174] The days are getting longer, as I continue onwards...
[177] The adventure continues, I'm getting closer, I just know it.
[178] I've made it to the portal, what will lie ahead?
[179] Maybe the Mods will be on the other side?
[180] The letters are still arriving... each pointing to a truth I do not want to face
[181] The letters are flooding in at this point, I've tried to get rid of them but they keep coming
[182] No food, no supplies but I do have one thing... My memories. I know the letters are not true, but what if they are? What will happen when I find them?
[183] Why am I doing this again? Was there ever more than one Mumbo?
[184] I continue, driven by a force to complete this task. Higher and higher into the Nether...
[185] What was the task again?
[186] I continue walking... heading who knows where hoping an answer will turn up at the end of this endless path.
[187] I find so many things built up here, I wonder who constructed them?
[188] Things are starting to seem familiar, I've been here before...
[189] Theres items I can use, food I can eat. Im starting to remember things
[190] I have made it...
[191] I begin digging...
[192]...
[193] It's just as I thought they are not here, there is no red or blue beneath the shrooms...
[194] WhEre aRE TheY?
[195] ... WHO were they?

A Rick Rolls a Nation — a timeline of the JD Vance couch joke
July 15th, 2024: "can't say for sure but he might be the first vp pick to have admitted in a ny times bestseller to fucking an Inside-out latex glove shoved between two couch cushions (vance, hillbilly elegy, pp. 179-181)." — @ rickrudescalves (the now deleted tweet)
Arguably, this ground zero tweet overly complicates things. Soon, the "latex glove" element will be completely forgotten and JD will *only* be fucking couches "raw dog style" in almost all subsequent variations on the joke.
July 15th, 2024 - Present: The joke goes absolutely bonkers viral. Comedian Kathy Griffin, who famously overstepped in 2017 by posing for a photo with a model of Trump's bloodied, disembodied head, believes the joke to be true, boosts it as if it is.
July 24th, 2024: The Associated Press publishes a fact check of the "claim," which is inherently hilarious.
July 25th, 2024: The Associated Press retracts the piece, causing fans of the Vance/couch meme to go wild with delight, the joke being that they retracted it because there's actually something to it. “The story, which did not go out on the wire to our customers, didn’t go through our standard editing process. We are looking into how that happened" — AP spokesperson Nicole Meir
July 30th, 2024: Business Insider tracks down the originator of the joke and interviews him --->
"@ rickrudescalves hid the post within a week of publishing it, but the couch joke had already left an impression."
Tumblr media
He says he was uncomfortable with the attention the joke received, and is mildly worried about being accused of election interference, but has no regrets.
Rick cites Werner Herzog, Jorge Luis Borges, John Fowles, and Hunter S. Thompson in explaining precedents for the form and details of the joke.
July 31st, 2024: JD Vance either intentionally makes a lame joke embracing (or trying to claim ownership of) the couch meme, or does so accidentally via free association. Either way, it falls totally flat and the man continues to dazzle America with his complete lack of charisma and his disgusting views on women's rights.
August 6th, 2024: Tim Walz is selected as Kamala Harris's Vice Presidential running mate. That night, in Philadelphia, Walz kills with a Vance/Couch joke.
August 7-8th-ish, 2024: The far right, led by Laura Loomer and Don Jr, makes an unfunny, clumsy, intentional attempt to do the same kind of joke with Walz by claiming...he...drinks horse cum? Because this is so...just gross—a classic over-escalation, you might say—and completely manufactured, this attempt seems to be dead on arrival.
August 9th, 2024: The non-GOP backlash officially begins. New York Magazine pubishes:
Tumblr media
"Besides the tiresome-but-correct moral case, leaning on fake memes also just isn’t necessary, much as it may delight Democrats’ online base. Good political candidates have always known how to get vicious while staying within the lines of accuracy. This means homing in on opponents’ real weaknesses, a task the Harris campaign has thus far excelled at."
To which there was an excellent Twitter response:
Tumblr media
Right. Who owns the joke? Is it democrats? Is it officials or citizens? The answer is no one, and therefore the idea it can be policed is itself a kind of joke, I think.
Where will it go from here? We shall see.
I wonder if we'll ever learn the identity of Rick, because, I agree, I think a joke made in mid-July may have altered history.

Who is.... Ralph Dibny | The Elongated Man? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Ralph Dibny is a powered superhero from DC Comics first introduced in 1960. Ralph gains his ability to stretch his body to comic proportions as a result of his chronic ingestion of what is basically an essential oil. Ralph's hero work is largely based out of Opal City (which is kind of a stand-in for Baltimore, MD). Ralph is best known for his membership with the Justice League of America, Justice League Europe, and the Croatoans. Ralph is a devoted husband to his wife Sue, has his own exhibit at the Flash Museum, and is one of, if not the best detective in detective comics!
A selection of my favorite Ralph Dibny comics can be found in chronological order under the cut If you're interested in a full list of Ralph's appearances, please dm me and I'm happy to send you scans of a of my handwritten list!

Judd Legum at Popular Information:
In 2024, reliable access to high-speed internet is no longer a luxury; it is a basic necessity. From job applications to managing personal finances and completing school work, internet access is an essential part of daily life. Without an internet connection, individuals are effectively cut off from basic societal activities.
But the reality is that many people — particularly those living around the poverty line — can not afford internet access. Without internet access, the difficult task of working your way from the American economy's bottom rung becomes virtually impossible.   On November 21, 2021, President Biden signed the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The new law included the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provided up to $30 per month to individuals or families with income up to 200% of the federal poverty line to help pay for high-speed internet. (For a family of four, the poverty line is currently $31,200.) On Tribal lands, where internet access is generally more expensive, the ACP offers subsidies up to $75 per month.  The concept started during the Trump administration. The last budget enacted by Trump included $3.2 billion to help families afford internet access. The FCC made the money available as a subsidy to low-income individuals and families through a program known as the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program. The legislation signed by Biden extended and formalized the program.  It has been a smashing success.
Today, the ACP is "helping 23 million households – 1 in 6 households across America." The program has particularly benefited "rural communities, veterans, and older Americans where the lack of affordable, reliable high-speed internet contributes to significant economic, health and other disparities." According to an FCC survey, two-thirds of beneficiaries "reported they had inconsistent internet service or no internet service at all prior to ACP." These households report using their high-speed internet to "schedule or attend healthcare appointments (72%), apply for jobs or complete work (48%), do schoolwork (75% for ACP subscribers 18-24 years old)." Tomorrow, the program will abruptly end.  In October 2023, the White House sent a supplemental budget request to Congress, which included $6 billion to extend the program through the end of 2024. There is also a bipartisan bill, the Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act, which would extend the program with $7 billion in funding. The benefits of the program have shown to be far greater than the costs. An academic study published in February 2024 found that "for every dollar spent on the ACP, the nation’s GDP increases by $3.89." The program will lapse tomorrow because Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) refuses to bring either the bill (or the supplemental funding request) to a vote. The Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act has 225 co-sponsors which means that, if Johnson held a vote, it would pass.
[...]
The Republican attack on affordable internet
Why will Johnson not even allow a vote to extend the ACP? He is not commenting. But there are hints in the federal budget produced by the Republican Study Committee (RSC). The RSC is the "conservative caucus" of the House GOP, and counts 179 of the 217 Republicans in the House as members. Johnson served as the chair of the RSC in 2019 and 2020. He is currently a member of the group's executive committee.  The RSC's latest budget says it "stands against" the ACP and labels it a "government handout[] that disincentivize[s] prosperity." The RSC claims the program is unnecessary because "80 percent" of beneficiaries had internet access before the program went into effect. For that statistic, the RSC cites a report from a right-wing think tank, the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC), which opposes the ACP. EPIC, in turn, cites an FCC survey to support its contention that 80% of ACP beneficiaries already had internet access. The survey actually found that "over two-thirds of survey respondents (68%) reported they had inconsistent internet service or no internet service at all prior to ACP."
[...] The RSC also falsely claims that funding for the precursor to the ACP, the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (EBB), "was signed into law at the end of President Biden’s first year in office." This is false. Former President Trump signed the funding into law in December 2020. The RSC's position is not popular. A December 2023 poll found that 79% of voters support "continuing the ACP, including 62% of Republicans, 78% of Independents, and 96% of Democrats."
In 2024, access to the internet is a necessity and not just a luxury, and the Republicans are set to end the Affordable Connectivity Program if no action is taken. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provided subsidies to low-income people and families to obtain internet access.

Nakazawa Miteki 中沢 未笛
Tumblr media
25 years old | born November 14 | 179 cm / 5'10" ft | AB blood type
Daughter of a disgraced samurai noble (subject to change lol)
Has a twin brother Sadayuki, older than him by nine minutes
Skilled in martial arts, particularly kenjutsu; taught by her father
Somewhat of a prodigy, has a crazy amount of physical strength
Constantly honing her skills through practice and combat; believes the strong have a duty to protect the weak
Travelled to Edo and joined the Roushigumi with her brother four years ago
Because they weren’t accepting women, pretended to be a man in order to join; goes by the name Mitake
Cut her hair Mulan-style and binds her chest to “sell” the fib
(Sadayuki later told her that she didn’t have to, people already used to think she was a man when they met her; he shut his mouth immediately when she unsheathed her sword)
Currently a spy working for the Shinsengumi, is a master of disguise
Capable of blending in anywhere, disguising herself as anyone or anything... except a woman, no one buys it for a second
(Shinpachi is the only one who can see through her disguises)
(“It's just a wig/beard/hairy mole/eyepatch/etcetera!” he insists, yet everyone else falls it for every time)
At the start of Gintama, was still passing herself off as a man; there's probably an episode or short arc where her secret is revealed
In love with Hijikata (unrequited, of course), believed by others to be hero-worship when she's still known as Mitake
Okita likely noticed early on and thought she was gay, though
(Which she is, just not the way Okita thought; bisexual rights)
Has insisted since a teenager that she’ll only marry a man who can fight her in a duel for her hand and win
(“But, Micchan... no man is even interested in you...” Sadayuki would awkwardly murmur, before dodging her sword strike with a shriek)
(After he leaves the Roushigumi, and it’s revealed she’s a woman, Okita happily takes on the task of reminding her; he’s much better at parrying her blows)
Loves konpeito, usually has a bag tucked away on her person

Eleanor is a 182 years old dollsplit demon, a demon that usually inhabits dolls, but can live without a host. She is 179 cm tall, uses she/ her and is a lesbian.
This demon is very bubbly and a lighthearted soul but she also loves to take the lead in serious discussions. Her joyful personality is hard to dull, almost nothing can bring her down. She has a playful disposition, Eleanor loves to play pranks on her flatmates and tell jokes. It‘s in her very nature to make people happy, so it saddens her to see how her ‚sister‘ Faye isolates herself. She loves her dearly and would do anything to see her happy.
Eleanor isn‘t home at the beginning of the story, she is living in London, her birthplace, for a few months to learn how to turn into a more human form. She actually lives in Saiko‘s flat together with Faye. There her room is the old workroom of the felis‘ father. When she is home she takes care of the flat, cleans, does laundry and other tasks, as a thank you for Saiko for letting her and Faye live at her flat. After successfully learning how to shape-shift, Eleanor came back home, finding a stranger in her room. In the meantime where the splitsoul was gone, Katsuro moved in. Nowadays they share the room, together with the ilugsantiias Ben.
Eleanor loves to sew, crochet, knit and write stories. However, she is not very confident in her writing, so she invented an own language, to encipher her stories. The dolls she makes she sells on the internet in her little web store. Faye helps her with the process and keeping the store up-to-date. They share the income.

The ideology of royal gardens in ancient Near East and the ancient Greek Classical authors
"The garden and the Greeks The Greeks were not indifferent to the ideology of royal gardens, which, as explained above, symbolize unbreakable divine favour and evoke the “sacred marriage” between the king and the goddess.179 Their appreciation of ANE palace gardens and their symbolic meanings is evident already in Herodotus’ description of a beautiful palace at Celaenae in Phrygia (7.26–9), which Xenophon, a fervent admirer of the Persian court, had also visited (Anab.1.2.7–9). Furthermore, in his very popular Cyropaedia (1.3.14)180 Xenophon describes how Astyages the Mede offered his grandson Cyrus the privilege of hunting in his paradise as a gesture of recognizing his legitimacy – the boy was destined to become the next king.181 Xenophon is actually very appreciative of the relationship between kingship and agriculture, as exemplified in the tale of Cyrus the Younger and his paradise at Sardis, which is related in the Oeconomicus (4.8–5.20); there, we read that, when Lysander was shown around this magnificent royal garden, he was surprised to realize that the king himself toiled regularly in the garden and was responsible for the impeccable alignment of its rows;182 the king, as Critobulus, another of Socrates’ interlocutors in the treatise, points out, “pays as much attention to husbandry as to warfare” (Oec.4.12: οὐκοῦν εἰ μὲν δὴ ταῦτα ποιεῖ βασιλεύς, ὦ Σώκρατες, οὐδὲν ἔμοιγε δοκεῖ ἧττον τῶν γεωργικῶν ἔργων ἐπιμελεῖσθαι ἢ τῶν πολεμικῶν), to which Socrates responds (Oec.4.13) that
In all the districts he [= the king] resides in and visits he takes care that there are “paradises,” as they call them, full of all the good and beautiful things that the soil will produce, and in this he himself spends most of his time, except when the season precludes it.
Cyrus (Oec.4.24)183 swears by the Sun-god – the kings’ typical patron – that he engages daily in some task of war or agriculture (further equating the two activities as royal duties). In response, Lysander concedes that Cyrus deserves his happiness on account of his virtues.184 At Oec.5.2, Socrates explains that the earth – typically identified with the fertility goddess, as we saw, in the sacred marriage context – yields to the cultivators “luxuries to enjoy” (καὶ ἀφ᾽ ὧν τοίνυν ἡδυπαθοῦσι, προσεπιφέρει). Yet at the same time, the earth “stimulates armed protection of the country on the part of the husbandmen, by nourishing her crops in the open for the strongest to take” (Oec.5.7: παρορμᾷ δέ τι καὶ εἰς τὸ ἀρήγειν σὺν ὅπλοις τῇ χώρᾳ καὶ ἡ γῆ τοὺς γεωργοὺς ἐν τῷ μέσῳ τοὺς καρποὺς τρέφουσα τῷ κρατοῦντι λαμβάνειν). Moreover, she “willingly teaches righteousness to those who can learn; for the better she is served, the more good things she gives in return” (Oec.5.12: ἔτι δὲ ἡ γῆ θεὸς οὖσα τοὺς δυναμένους καταμανθάνειν καὶ δικαιοσύνην διδάσκει: τοὺς γὰρ ἄριστα θεραπεύοντας αὐτὴν πλεῖστα ἀγαθὰ ἀντιποιεῖ). Xenophon’s observations, ingeniously put in the mouth of Socrates, accurately explain the ideology of the sacred marriage which, as we saw, were often allegorized in ANE myths about good and bad farmers and/or gardeners who please or displease the fertility goddess with their labour. In similar spirit, at Oec.5.19–20, Socrates admits to Critobulus that the operations of husbandry no less than those of war are in the hands of the gods.
I thought you knew, Critobulus, that the operations of husbandry no less than those of war are in the hands of the gods. And you observe, I suppose, that men engaged in war try to propitiate the gods before taking action; and with sacrifices and omens seek to know what they ought to do and what they ought not to do; and for the business of husbandry do you think it less necessary to ask the blessing of the gods? Know of a surety that right-minded men offer prayer for fruits and crops and cattle and horses and sheep, aye and for all that they possess.
What more appropriate way of propitiating the goddess than “pleasing her sexually” so she would continue to yield crops for the people and vouch for their safety in enjoying them? And who more appropriate to undertake the task than the king, the dedicated gardener of the goddess? The image of the king as gardener was certainly appreciated by Seleucus I, who, following divine advice, dedicated his famous garden at Daphne, just outside Antioch,185 to Apollo and Artemis.186 The grove, famous for its abundance of shady laurel trees, tall cypresses and perennial fountains [see cover image], was closely associated with the foundation of the Seleucid dynasty and Apollo, their divine patron; its importance in the political propaganda of the Seleucids was further enhanced under Antiochus III the Great and Antiochus IV.187"

The F-35 fighter, the most expensive weapons program in the world, has just become more expensive
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/04/22023 - 08:11am Military
The most expensive weapons program in the world - the U.S. F-35 fighter - has become even more expensive, according to a recent Pentagon report.
The program to develop and acquire the plane will cost a total of US$ 438 billion, an increase of US$ 26 billion over the last estimate a year ago, according to the new F-35 Selected Acquisition Report (RAE) released on Monday.
The 6.5% increase is actually relatively modest given the program's standards, which originally was $233 billion when Lockheed Martin Corp. won the contract in 2001.
"The cost data in question were determined after accounting for inflation" and the readjustment of the production plans of the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, which extend from 2044 to 2049, the program office said in a statement. The new estimate does not change the total number of planned aircraft, which includes 14 jets in development and 2,456 production models for the US, he said.
The so-called "unit cost of program acquisition" per jet, which includes development and production dollars when calculated in what budget analysts call inflation-adjusted "year" dollars, increased to US$ 179 million per jet, from US$ 166 million last year, according to the RAE.
Tumblr media
The $26 billion increase is equivalent to what Congress allocated under Ukraine's Security Assistance Initiative to support Kiev's fight against Russia's invasion. It is also approximately equivalent to this year's budget request for NASA, the space agency.
Separately, the Pentagon said that the F-35, which faced several delays, surpassed an important milestone last month when it completed testing in an advanced Pentagon simulator, spokesman Russell Goemaere said in a statement. The simulations were designed to determine whether the plane is up to the task of fighting the main Russian and Chinese air defenses and fighters, and their results counted on 42% of the evaluation required for an approval grade.
The test is part of the legally required evaluation before Lockheed, based in Bethesda, Maryland, can proceed with full production. Of a potential fleet of 3,000 or more F-35s to the U.S. and international customers, at least 965 were delivered. Many of them may need to be adapted based on the test results.
The F-35 was supposed to carry out the exercise of 64 missions in 2017, but was postponed for years due to unresolved technical problems in the installation of tests of the "Joint Simulation Environment", aggravated by the COVID pandemic. The Pentagon testing office plans to deliver its test report no later than 90 days after completion, but does not plan to publish an unclassified summary, it said.

On February 21st 1842 Scotland’s first inter-city railway, the Edinburgh-Glasgow mainline, opened to regular traffic.
The building of a railway between the two cities was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1838 following several years of public discussion.
Construction work on the 46-mile line took almost four years. It was no easy task. To ensure a level route, numerous cuttings were dug, four viaducts were built and three tunnels were driven through hills and solid rock. Members of the public were invited to walk through the Queen Street tunnel on New Year’s Day 1842 to satisfy growing interest in the project. The line opened to regular services on 21st February that year, following a ceremonial opening of the station three days earlier, as I posted on Sunday.
The railway put an end to the slow and cumbersome stagecoaches that had linked Glasgow and Edinburgh for more than a century, and would eventually drive business away from the canal network as well.
The project’s engineers had wanted to build a bridge over the Forth and Clyde canal – but the canal’s owners refused. A tunnel under the waterway had to be constructed instead.
The Scotsman reported in February 1842 that “it rarely happens that a railway can be brought into the centre of a great city”, as it announced the opening of Queen Street station in Glasgow. But the original Edinburgh terminus at Haymarket was greeted with rather less enthusiasm. It was hoped that eventually the train line would stretch further into Edinburgh.
An extension to North Bridge was duly completed in 1846, and work on building the present Waverley station began in 1868.
The line was popular with passengers from the beginning. Initially, four services travelled in each direction from Monday to Saturday. Controversially, two services also ran on Sundays – provoking strong opposition from Sabbatarians. The number of trains throughout the week quickly increased.
Passengers could choose to alight at many more intermediate stations than today – with stops at Gogar, Ratho, Winchburgh, Linlithgow, Polmont, Falkirk, Castlecary, Croy, Kirkintilloch (later Lenzie) and Bishopbriggs. The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway Company which built the line was absorbed by the North British Railway (NBR) in 1865. The NBR would in turn be absorbed by the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923.
There have been several high-profile train crashes on the route over the years. The most recent occurred on 30th July, 1984, when a rush hour commuter service out of Waverley struck a cow that had wandered on to the tracks near Polmont from a nearby field. The collision caused all six carriages to derail, killing 13 people and injuring 61 others.
The worst accident, in terms of loss of life, took place on 10th December, 1937, at Castlecary. During a snowstorm, the 5.30pm Waverley to Queen Street express collided with a late running local train from Dundee to Glasgow. The locomotive hit the rear of the standing local service at the now-closed Castlecary station at an estimated 70mph. Four carriages were completely destroyed by the collision, killing 35 passengers and injuring 179 more.
The £742m Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) is the biggest project on the route since it was built 174 years ago. It will eventually see all-electric trains operating on the line, with faster journey times and more seats for passengers. The average journey time by train between Glasgow and Edinburgh (Waverley) is now 1  hour and 14 minutes, with around 191 trains per day.
A new passenger hall at Haymarket station opened in 2014, while Queen Street was recently comprehensively rebuilt.
