Guru Padma Sambhava popularly known as Guru Rinpoche, the precious teacher, was a powerful Tantric Buddhist Master. He was invited to Tibet in the eighth century to propagate Buddhism. Padmasambhava taught many disciples who also became perfect masters of Tantric Buddhism. He is said to have had twenty five great disciples who were instrumental in preserving the sacred teachings of Lord Buddha to the present day. This beautiful sculpture is hand crafted by the very talented artists of the beautiful Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal!

Isn’t Buddhism atheistic?

Popular Misconception: Buddhism was originally an atheistic religion and some theistic branches (i.e. Vajrayana) developed later. Atheistic Buddhism is closest to what Siddhartha Gautama, the historical buddha, believed.

Reality: Buddhism is fundamentally a nontheistic religion and was nontheistic from the beginning, which makes it compatible with atheism or certain forms of theism. Siddhartha Gautama believed that devas do exist and also taught the dharma to them.

Pilgrimage hike to Paro Taktsang, Tiger’s Nest. I have lost count of the times I have paid homage to this spiritual wonder of Bhutan. The sanctity of this iconic spiritual wonder starts with the 8th century visit to this place by Guru RInpoche. The greats of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism have paid homage to Tiger’s Nest by offering prayers and practice. Many masters have also discovered invaluable treasures at Taktsang. May we be able to preserve the beauty and the blessings of this spiritual heritage for all times to come.

My tips:

Start early

Carry water. I carry coffee and chaai. Apply sun screen liberally. Dress for the season. In winter, I layer myself. In the summer, an umbrella is a must. If you have hiking/trekking boots, wear them. You’ll appreciate them especially when you are descending. The guards won’t let you in T shirts. Cameras and phones are not allowed inside the monastery.
