Summary: Miguel contemplates on the price he has to pay for his decision, and longs for a time free of complications.
Title and story inspired by this song.
**********
Miguel lay on the bed, willing for sleep to come to him. Yet his mind was still wired from his blistering conversation with the Manila police lieutenant and the Island detective. He had made it clear to them that he did not trust them for his own reasons.
He wished that he had a choice, one that did not involve stepping out of his hiding place and be killed before fulfilling what he had set himself to do.
He also wished that he was not stuck with a private detective who liked to appear as interesting as a piedra de China and a police lieutenant who hated his kind--and whose parentage he had suspected and tried to confirm since that fateful day in Cebu more than a decade ago.
Except he had been stuck between a rock and a hard place. He had to choose between two evils.
The silver lining in this ordeal, however, was that they had him sheltered in a room above a small restaurant. A migrant from Guangdong brought this quaint building once he had sufficient funds from hawking chicken mami in the streets. Despite the difference between their cultures--the owner from a Cantonese-speaking province and Miguel was mostly fluent in Hokkien--they had struck up a quick friendship. The owner had picked up on his distrust with authority and conversed with him after the Island detective and the police lieutenant had left earlier that night.
"You are not at ease, young man," the former teacher from Guangdong noted as they shared dinner. "You are suspicious of them." He meant both Jo Gar and Lieutenant Sadi Ratan.
Miguel nodded at him. "It is not that I am not grateful for their rescuing me from death. I am, but I suspect that my boss demanded them to find me and they would have me turned over to him. After my friend..." Miguel trailed, at loss for words as the pain of his friend's disappearance had stabbed him in the heart once more and how the police bungled up the investigation, causing his anger to flare in his heart once more. "My friend is lost, and I suspect it is because of my boss."
The owner had only nodded.
"Of course, you know of Lieutenant Ratan's reputation," Miguel pointed out. "He hates us. And I cannot trust Jo Gar despite his reputation."
"Oh dear, it is hard to decide what to do," the owner had only commented, his brows furrowing at the thought. "But what choice do you have, young man? If you want to find out who did it and keep your life with you, you have to deal with them regardless of what you feel, just as how they have to deal with you despite their opinions."
Miguel had nodded wearily. "It is never easy."
"Not easy, but who knows what the payback will be?"
"Goodness me, is this a quid pro quo?"
The owner shook his head. "Just being practical, young man."
The older of them had a point. It didn't matter what he or they felt with one another. And he had to do what needed to be done.
Yet it was not the only price he had to pay. He also had to pay the heavy price of leaving his family and friends behind.
Tears pricked behind his eyelids. It hurt his heart to stay away from his family and friends, but he had to. He could not risk them being caught in the whirling storm that the Thorntons were capable of. They could snap their fingers and--BAM! your life would be over. No, if any punishment would fall, it should fall on Miguel.
He sat up on the bed, let his tears fall. But he cried silently, not wanting anyone, not the owner, to see him crying. He did not want them to know the pain beating on him because he decided to do what was right.
He missed his home. He missed his family. He missed his friends. He missed the life he'd had before entering Thornton's real estate firm. He missed the life when Raul was still present in his life. Raul's absence had grown more pronounced as time went by, as opposed to what people blather about time healing all wounds.
(It was bullshit.)
And above all, he missed the carefree days when he could sleep knowing that he was secure, that he had nothing to worry about. That he was surrounded by his loving family and friends. And he missed his mother so much.
He thought about his mother, who would always sing him and his siblings to sleep. Her soft voice would waft within the room, a comfort when any of her children were upset or sick. She would sing songs in her native Cebuano, songs of love and assurances that everything would be alright, and some that would make them smile or laugh. Sometimes she would just hum the music of a song she'd known.
No wonder even his father would stop what he was doing and listen to her sing.
No wonder he fell in love with her back then and was still in love with her.
He wished that his mother would be by his side, let him cry on her shoulder to let out all the pain in his heart. She might not fully understand, but she would know when one of her own was suffering. He wanted to hear her sing her songs once more until he slept.
It's alright, anak, she would assure him if she were here with him, I am right here.
Tell us what is bothering you, anak. Let us help you.
I cannot, Ina. I cannot. But I will once it is all over.
He would have to face this alone. It was his price to pay, and it could cost his life.
But if he ever came out of the ordeal alive, he would make up to them for the rash decisions he had made, for the pain it had caused them. And maybe, just maybe, have a life that would let him be in peace in his waking hours, like how his mother's lullaby gave him peace in his sleep.

THE LAST PLATE TO CLEAN
I remember waking up to the clanking sound of spoon that is smacking Mamang's mug as she stirs her coffee. It was a rainy day so I put on some of the thickest socks I had and went downstairs. The papag can freeze my feet, and the winds sounded like it was ripping off the wooden panels attached to the roof. I went to have a look outside and planned if I can bathe after lunch, but Papang said it was not a good idea. With the onslaught of typhoon, I guessed going out would just be suicide.
Mamang shouted from the other side of the room as if we're back at warring eras when it was just time for lunch. Of course, I was the first to go and the last to eat. Perhaps the taste of balatong—mung beans soup with malunggay leaves, were just not to my liking because, I, was obviously a picky eater. I saw Manang Iya smirking at the sides while I was being castigated. Telling jokes like, "Nakaadado ti haan a mangmangan nga ubbing" and "nagasatka a ta adda paylang ti kanem" while I scoffed down several chops of bagnet from the soup.
Manong was not the type to pick up a fight, but one night Papang ran through the front door and started throwing hands outside when the lights can't reach them; the streets were equipped with old fluorescent lights. Some tanod responded and stopped the fight and it turns out, Manong had a fall out with one if his barkadas and Papang went to join in the fun—it was just to help Manong.
It was as if life flashed at me and suddenly some memories I have had as a kid resurfaced. I guess growing up as the inaudi would make anyone feel like their future secured or their money limitless but it wasn't the case for me. Papang died of aneurysm and cardiac arrest when I was in seventh grade. Manang Mich and Manong GG made their own families and Manang Iya went abroad. Mamang was stressed out and aged fast because of the loss and the constant pressure from chismosas and chaotic neighborhood. So I think the pressure of being the inaudi is as heavy as the inauna being breadwinners. I get to enjoy their company for a while and watch them leave to catch their dreams. Perhaps, that is the cause of my fear of abandonment. I feel like, I am just living for the sake of living.

you know you are legit old when your friend's concept of a road trip is to visit Manaoag for a pilgrimage and lunch at a friend's rest house in Pampanga.
not that I am complaining. i mean I will make time for Mama Mary. I do love her. and I try my best to say the rosary everyday. kalurks, sa dami ba naman ng kasalanan at pagkukulang ko, eto minamahal pa din ako ng Diyos? ano ba naman yung tiisin yung init ng Pangasinan for a pilgrimage diba?

then we had lunch sa pampanga. again, signs of aging, kumakain na din kami ng durian lol. my friend, Del short for Rodelio inherited his parent's house and the adjacent manggahan. we are of the same age but man, this guy is 4x hardworking than I am. like he would be out there looking for opportunities to earn. biruan nga namin, kung me pera lang sa basura, papasukin nya yan eh (teka me pera ba sa basura talaga?)
so the convo shifted on me, much to my dismay.
(bites off from the durian and calls on the boyfriend"
Del: Asawa ko, mahal mo ko diba? kiss mo ko dali! (Del and the boyfriend smooched infront of us bewildered friends)
Jay: Power!!! mayora levels! Sige sarhento hubaddd!
Leo: lol gobernadora kamo, yung hacindierang mahilig manira ng pamilya hahahahaha
Cris: teka My Day ko to ha? lol
Me: speechless.

Silence filled the kitchen
New blood stained the tiles floor
A haunting tune filled the hall
A tune distant and long
It stretched and rings longing and tone so far gone
His voice sings
It cried
His soul dances with each twang of guilt striking his heart cords
Eyes once bright now dim with barely any energy
Footsteps sluggish and slow
His heart beat ever so slower
"Sa aking pagtulog na labis ang himbing...Ang bantay ko'y tala, ang tanod ko'y bituin" his voice strains ever so slightly
(translation: In my sleep with so much sleep...My watchman is a note, my watchman is a star)
He stops eyes glancing at a calendar holding a picture of a tropical island.
His heart aches for the land he was born on
(translation: In the company of mother, heaven is alive... My heart is suffering, eager for the swing of the cradle)
Thoughts of the family he had beyond his reach had him grasping at straws
The only thing his mind holding now was their laughter and loving smiles
..Sa piling ni nanay, langit ay buhay-...Puso kong may dusa sabik sa ugoy ng duyan" he nearly gave out but choose to slid down the wall with his forehead touching the wall as he hung it low.
(translation: In my sleep with so much sleep, My watchman is a note, my watchman is a star.. ..In my mother's company, the sky is alive-...My heart has pain eager for the swing of the cradle)
He muffled out into his legs wishing for one last embrace
(translation: I want to sleep in my old cradle, mother...Oh! mother!!")

Gamu-gamo, peste
5/1/2024
They hung around our house and the heat;
the Philippine sun did not stop them.
BANG, goes the front gate and they run away.
I just wanted to spend the day
in an empty and quiet place.
Daytime and they gathered with their friends,
talking about whatnot.
Stupid, insignificant preteen and teen chatter:
family, jowa, who’s with who and making fun of the people
around the subdivision they’re bothering.
They are gamu-gamo, peste
and they have been pestering me since the time I guarded
and took care of the place.
A place that is not theirs, that is mine.
My parents are weak,
cannot have the backbone to tell the tanods
or the pulis that the kids are a menace.
I’m pretty sure Rizal loves this.
He’s so wrong about the “kabataan”.
They’re no one’s hope.
Filipino kids are just as spoiled and entitled like the West.
They’ve not experienced
any Chinese or Russian revolutions in their lifetime.
They cannot do proper academic research,
tries to get in relationships and sex from adults,
touts BBM and DDS apologist rhetoric
and only cares about social media presence and their TikToks.
Experiencing their unwarranted presence
around the neighborhood, especially during Labor Day,
although nothing to them, is a natural birth control to me.

Info for writer in Thai series fandom: Lullabies
Some well know song used for lullabies, games, ect.
Notes:
I notice that using lullabies or nursery rhymes in writing is a common occurrence, so in this chapter I will give you something in case you want some Thai songs for that. Oh, but if you are more comfortable using an English song, then I would like to assure you that many of them are well known in Thai. Don't worry.
I added all song links on AO3, but just some here due to the post limit.

This is the first one.

This is the third one.
Originally I knew only 2 versions of this song, but since I found 4 when I searched, I put all 4 here.
The version of this song that mentions Khun Thong actually has political implications. First, is that Khun Thong died fighting for our country and we should honor his action; and then, afterward, Khun Thong kind of became a symbol of the act of a revolutionary, as that name got used in literature about the uprising on October 14th, 1973, and the massacre on October 6th, 1976.

Chingcho
*Chingcho have many meaning such as
Pond Skaters
a type of crib mobile nursery décor.
Female soldiers in the reign of King Rama V
kangaroo
mythical creatures
a type of bird.
I grew up thinking the word Chingcho here meant the bird, but after doing some searching I found a more convincing explanation, which is that the word Chingcho in this song did not refer to anything above but the swaying movement that all things above have in common, and this song is about Chinese people who sailed to Thailand to trade and do the swaying movement in order to sail the ship. จิงเอย จิงโจ้ ching oei chingcho ching oei chingcho มาโล้สำเภา ma lo samphao making the junk sailing along the waves หมาไนไล่เห่า manai lai hao The dog barks จิงโจ้ตกน้ำ chingcho tok nam chingcho falls into water หมาไนไล่ซ้ำ manai lai sam dog repeatedly chasing จิงโจ้ดำหนี chingcho dam ni chingcho dives away, fleeing ได้กล้วยสองหวี dai kluai song wi get two hand of bananas ทำขวัญจิงโจ้ thamkhwan chingcho thamkhwan chingcho *Tham khwan refers to the practice of performing a ceremony to encourage or resurrect spirits after experiencing a loss of khwan.
It can also mean to pay damages or compensation, to give something for consolation (of the people of north Thailand), to perform rites of welcome or to compensate, or to recompense.

This one is a part of a type of poem used for sing while paddling a boat so it isn't excetly a lullaby but some people do used as one including my family. The content of this poem is to admire the beauty of the parade of royal ships. I decided that translating it would be too difficult for me. So I will just leave it at that.

"In My Work Immersion Era"
My work immersion era is probably one of those mixed emotion feelings because at first, you could really feel yourself growing up,and finally getting to experience to what once your parents did as well, and also giving you excitement for the reason of you are being prepared for what you want, and what you will become and how will it go and for me,this marks my chapter as me going "to embark in a journey through life"
I was tasked and stationed to be at Brgy, San Isidro, which is located inside the Fatima Village, wherein the first day,we are adequatly needed to be in a specific time and avoid beimg late.We were introduced in our first day by a program and was greeted with the staff of the establishment and also by the policemen which the Kapitana Baby Garcia Salen was told to be stationed here as well to provide more protection, and as the program ended,we responded and helped organize the chairs in order and as we are finished,Our work immersion teacher Ma'am Gina Catapang along with sir Canales to introduce us to the workplace and had a little orientation with the Kapitana Herself,we got stationed to different tasks, encoding blotter records, responding to tanods, and following orders were the tasks given to us.I was happy with doing the tasks assigned because as were doing it,the tanods and other staffs were very caring at us and provided us support, and when lunchtime came,we would all gather to eat together and just enjoy the delicious food at our forefront, and after a good lunch we would keep working until its time to go,which they would assist us in going home ensuring we are safe.
This current events happening is a very eye opening moment to me not only because of the workplace experience, but also the struggles, the joy,and all those emotions of working in a workplace. But also gain lessons because of some staffs there sharing there experience to us and encouraging us to study in accordance to achieve the goals we ourselves set,not only it motivates me,it also helps me prepare for the future me myself is gonna conquer to.

Remember when my mom died?
And then it was just me and my sister who saw through everything—of course with the help of some relatives who volunteered to do whatever they can during the wake to ease our stress. Technically, it was more of a team effort, the two of us just made the critical decisions.
Anyway, my sister and I stayed at the funeral home most of the time, going as far as sleeping there for the night, accompanied by a barangay tanod who kept his post outside the doors. We'd just go home the morning after when my relatives would come early to take our place in watching over.
At home, we'd take a bath, eat lunch along the way, sleep for a while, and do whatever's needed for the wake. When all that's done, we'd go back to the funeral home, wait until everyone's gone, and stay there again for the night. That was our routine.
For most of my life, it was just the three of us: my mom, my sister, and me. Dad works abroad. Sometimes, my maternal grandmother was also there—then she died too, three years before my mom did. Funny how in my mom's last days, whenever everyone's gone home after visiting her wake, it was still just her, my sister, and me.
My father came home, and was already present during the second night of my mom's wake. The moment he arrived, coming straight from the airport, he cried and then hugged me and my sister after viewing my mom's remains. And then the first thing he said to us was, "Magkano sahod niyo?"
I don't remember much about what he did for the funeral, but he was there every night, attending to the guests. In truth, he was more like a guest himself too, if you ask me. At my mom's last night, when we've already transferred her wake at the church we grew up with, my father made a fuss about how plain and ugly the night was—no celebrations, music, or anything. And he's blaming me and my sister for it, including our friends at the church. It came to a point that I raised my voice and spoke in english to reason out that I know this was what my mom would've wanted. In the end, he wanted speak to the microphone the next day on my mom's necrological mass.
In order to counter whatever speech he’s gonna make, I insisted that I tell the story of my mom's talambuhay, even though a church friend was actually assigned to do it. My smile never faltered when I delivered that speech, even though I’ve already made most attendees cry.
No one else from my family gave a speech.
Anyway.
One of my aunts died last Sunday night. She was my father's oldest sibling. And in the past two days, my dad has been spending 80% of his waking hours there at the same funeral home where my mom's wake was.
Just sharing.

“Walay arte, walay show, serbisyo dayon.”
✦ Usa Ka Panawagan Sa Tibuok Iligan ✦
Paglaum. Tinuod nga Serbisyo.
Si Roy Ga ang kandidato nga:
Dili mohadlok sa problema
Andam maminaw sa katawhan
Duna nay kasinatian sa serbisyo
Dili plastik ug dili trapo
May kasingkasing para sa masa
Numero 2 sa balota – pero Numero 1 sa Serbisyo!
✦ Roy Ga – Pagka-Mayor ✦

Bigla ko tuloy naalala, I think 10 years ago, basta matagal na.
Hanep yung reason.
Nakakatrauma talaga yung pangyayaring yun.

BALITANG REHIYONAL: Suspected Woman in Guihulngan on Mental Health facing charges for an attempted Mass Murder at the GNHS [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
(Written by Craig Ichabod Williams / Regional Correspondent of Cartoon Network News)
GUIHULNGAN, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- An unsettling incident occurred at Guihulngan National High School (GNHS)-Katawan campus in 'Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental'. At approximately Tuesday morning at 10am (March 18th, 2025 -- Guihulngan local time), a woman, reported having mental health issues, when she illegally entered the school premises wielding a large knife (known as 'Sundang' or short machete), causing alarm among students and faculty.
Eyewitnesses state that the woman attempted to force entry into a classroom, damaging the door in the process. Quick-thinking students secured the doors and windows, while teachers promptly alerted local barangay officials before everyone was completely mass murdered. Initial reports circulating on social media suggested that the woman was a revenged parent retaliating against the alleged bullying of her child, which is a recent violent video that was not independently verified by Cartoon Network News.
Investigations established that the woman had no family ties to the educational facility at GNHS, while her mental health issues resulted in her violent actions. Week 4 - Navigating Safely with Awareness & Technology
In our 4th week of interviewing, our team asked two customers about safety awareness and technology. One respondent said that they trust the Barangay Tanod and when the area is crowded with people, they go there.
Our other respondent also said about their experience in high school about a person staring at them, they couldn't do anything at that time. Even quoted "most pinoys just stare all the time.".
At times like this, a bustling city really needs CCTVs everywhere to record any crime activities. Some said that they walk really fast to avoid anyone trying to follow them. Some also said that they would prefer a city having a lot of security.
People had different opinions on crime data. Some liked crowdsourced reports because they’re updated in real-time, while official data can be slow or limited. Others felt that constantly seeing crime reports might make people more afraid and change how they navigate the city.
For navigation apps, most of them rely on Google Maps, but they did piqued their interest on an app that does the same thing but with real-time crime mapping and alert systems.
TAKEAWAYS:
A helping community is the key and are important in safety. Real-time alerts are a must need so that they don't live in fear.

WEEK 4: Safety Through Community & Awareness
In the 4th week of interviews, a different perspective emerged—one that emphasized trust in the community as a safety measure. Some people feel safer when they walk through crowded areas or rely on security personnel, such as local patrol officers or tanods. They believe that the presence of surveillance cameras in public places could further enhance safety by deterring crime and assisting in case of incidents.
One respondent recalled a disturbing experience in public transportation when a conductor asked a fellow passenger where they were getting off, only to realize that the "passenger" wasn't actually there—a moment that left them uneasy. This highlights the importance of awareness and vigilance, especially in unfamiliar places.
When it comes to crime data sources, opinions were mixed. Some preferred crowdsourced reports because of their real-time nature, arguing that official crime data is often delayed or restricted. Others acknowledged that too much exposure to crime reports might create fear, which could impact how people move around the city.
As for navigation apps, most people still rely on Google Maps, but they expressed interest in a tool that could help them avoid unsafe areas, especially when traveling somewhere new.
TAKEAWAY:
Trust and community are important in safety. People want real-time alerts but don’t want to live in fear—balance is key.
