What’s the deal with Lauren and Tanner’s relationship? How do Leon and April feel about it?
It'ssss a lil complicated...
Lauren's had her eyes on Tanner from nearly the moment she met him post-partum. Even with the added fact that it was in the universe's best interest that he be resurrected, she only ended up bothering to do it so soon because she fancied him.
And as Ape and Leon continue to grieve the loss of their friends as well as the residents of Lystrike, Tanner had to watch as his girlfriend and his best friend found solace in each other to cope. Only when they thought Tanner and Frigus weren't watching though, so that was a huge ouch factor for him.
Tanner has never been the most comfortable around Lauren, but she's the primary factor in his revival so he just put up with her, and tried his best to befriend her despite his initial feelings. So when it came time for him to finally be resurrected and his emotions were all out of wack as a result, he wasn't as repulsed as he thought he would be when she came onto him.
Tanner sees it as a stupid fling that means nothing. He's a bit shy admitting it to Ape, but with Leon in the mix of things with April, neither of them (for once) feel justified in an argument.
So April and Leon may have their opinions on Lauren, but what Tanner got up to is not a huge deal. They take the time to understand.
Lauren sees the fling as a bit of a trophy she won. It was not perhaps the most moral thing to do to someone in a vulnerable state like he was, but I would hardly describe Lauren as soneone with pristine morals >_>...
She remains, from time to time, somewhat flirtatious around Tanner, which frustrate Leon and April especially, but Tanner chooses to ignore it as best he can.

Sir Ebrenn’s Houseguest
Aefsheen shifted in his sleep, dream memories washing through his mind…
The teenaged half elf looked over at his human counterpart, the girl panting as heavily as he. They were in their usual hiding place, an abandoned and shuttered storefront in the mill quarter. The two urchins had been sneaking in here for years, and over time had furnished it with castoff items. There was a wobbly crate for a table, a couple of broken chairs they'd crudely repaired enough to use, and a couple of abandoned mattresses found on the street. They stank of the wood smoke they’d used to drive the bedbugs and fleas out, but they were better than lying on the bare earth floor of the old storefront’s storage room. They each now lay on one, bruised and bleeding and out of breath from their flight from the city watch. As he caught his breath, Aefsheen spoke.
"You know, Danniven, there are some things I understand and accept. If we pinch food from a butcher or grocer and get caught, I expect a couple of kicks and a head knocking. They're trying to survive just like us. Don't get me wrong - I'll take that food and dodge that beating every time I can, but I don't hold a grudge about it. I'd do the same thing in their place.
But what that watchman does. And it's not just us - he strides roughshod over the whole quarter. Bullies people that haven't done anything wrong. And just now? We were lucky to get away. I think this time he meant to kill us."
Danniven, wiping blood from where it still flowed freely down her chin from her nose, nodded.
"You're right, Aefsheen. Absolutely right. He needs to be taught a lesson, that one."
"Yeah, but what can we do, Danni? He nearly killed the two of us singlehandedly. He even managed to take our knives away.”
“Well, yours he took. Mine, I left in his leg. I guess I’ll have to break into another butcher shop and steal us some replacements. But I know, brother. He nearly killed the two of us. But could he take ten of us down? Fifteen? I don’t think he could.”
“Are we back to that, sister? We’ve talked and talked about it.”
“Yes we have, and it’s time to stop talking and act, Aefsheen. I know you’re not thrilled with the idea, and I honestly prefer going alone or with just you, but we’ve caught the Watch’s attention now, and they’ll be hunting us. We won’t survive on our own any longer. We have a few friends. Let’s talk to them and they can talk to their other friends. We’ll see how it plays out.”
Aefsheen turned it over in his mind and the more he thought about it, the more he realized she was right. The pair had targets on their backs now. If not the whole watch, then at least this tyrant and his friends would hunt them down now that they’d wounded him. Reluctantly, he agreed to organize a group of other youths from the neighborhood.
Tohlfehn meandered through the mill quarter. He was a large man, but lazy, and so had chosen to join the city watch rather than fell trees or labor in the lumberyard. When he’d finished his training, at first he’d resented being sent here to police the city’s laborers and drunks and urchins. But he soon came to realize that he could truly make use of his great size and strength and have some fun with the city’s poorer citizens. He’d always been a bully, and he soon turned the quarter into his playground, knowing the locals would never bother to complain to his superiors. He pushed around drunkards, beat children, and occasionally had his way with some of the fairer women unfortunate enough to catch his eye.
Movement in an alleyway caught his attention, and he hefted his mace and turned that direction. He limped into the shadowy space between the butcher’s and the tanner’s shops and paused to let his eyes adjust to the gloom. Then he saw her. One of the two little bastards from last week. He’d caught them stealing apples and tried to arrest them but they fought. He’d beaten them with his fists until they pulled knives. He’d managed to disarm the pointy ear boy, but the filthy girl had sunk her knife into his leg. They used the distraction to escape. Now she was standing at the other end of the alley, face still swollen, but she wasn’t running this time. She spoke as she approached him.
“Your days of abusing the people of this neighborhood are over, Tohlfehn. You’ve terrorized us for the last time. It ends today.”
The burly watchman, confident in his leather armor, iron headed mace, and sheer size, laughed loudly enough to echo through the alley and out into the street beyond. He reached out and grabbed the front of her tunic. She didn’t resist as he dragged her out into full view of the growing crowd.
“Little girl, what do you mean, threatening ME? I’ll give you the beating of your life right here in the street as a lesson to any others that feel brave. Ha! I’m a man of the city watch, and you’re nothing. You’re an insect! What threat is an insect?” He lifted her by her tunic and punched her in the face. Her head rocked back, then she lifted it back up and looked him in the eye. She grinned at him as the crowd closed in on them.
“You’re right, watchman.” She spoke the last word with all the disdain she could muster. “One insect is no threat. It stings, and you swat it and it dies. One insect is a nuisance. But a swarm? There’s your threat.” He felt the bite of a blade entering his back and she laughed at the look of shocked pain in his eyes.
He dropped her and spun around, swinging his mace inches over Aefsheen’s ducking head. Aefsheen reached out and left a bloody gash in the large man’s thigh as more than a dozen children and youths emerged from shop doors and alleys, running to attack Tohlfehn at once with knives, table legs, boards, and cobblestones pried from the street.
Danniven laughed as she drew her knife and joined in the attack. She leapt onto Tohlfehn’s back, wrapping her legs around his waist and one arm around his head. “Meet the Swarm” she murmured in his ear as she buried her blade in his neck.
He woke groggily from his dream of the Swarm’s first attack. He sat up and looked at the faded tattoo of a wasp on the web of skin between the thumb and forefinger on his right hand while his left hand rubbed his swollen jaw and he took in his surroundings. He appeared to be in a small stone cell with an iron grate for a door. The bed was a wooden platform jutting from the wall, almost padded by a thin mildewed blanket. There was another bed across the cell, a chamber pot in one corner of the cell and a pitcher near the door. The whole room was perhaps eight feet square with a low ceiling.
He took a look and a sniff at the pitcher. It appeared to be water. Maybe a bit stale, but likely not dangerous. If his captors had wanted him dead, they’d have killed him while he was unconscious instead of going to all the trouble of imprisoning him first. He drank the water and tried to think through the throbbing in his skull. How had he wound up here? As the water revived him, his memory slowly returned and he remembered the conflict. He’d gotten lost in a forest after seeking shelter from a storm. He was camped for the night when he found himself surrounded by soldiers including one mounted and dressed in full plate armor and helm, holding a lance and wearing a sword.
As it turned out, the mounted man was Winslir, Sir Ebrenn Markwell’s squire. Winslir informed Aefsheen that he was trespassing on Sir Ebrenn’s lands and accused him of poaching, although he was clearly eating dried meat and fruits inside his wagon, taking shelter from the rain still soaking everything around him.
This was bad. He’d heard stories of Sir Ebrenn. He was referred to as the Mad Yeoman, although presumably not to his face. He was crazy and, ironically for his station, reclusive. He was as likely to treat a guest with all the hospitality of a noble lord or with all the cruelty of a twisted inquisitor, apparently completely randomly. By all accounts, he was an old man, too old to ride into battle anymore. His squire was said to be up in years as well, and to have fought in many battles in his youth, but Ebrenn had always refused to grant him knighthood, and kept him away from any noble who could bestow the honor so that he could keep the poor man indentured to him for life. Most other men would have abandoned Ebrenn long ago and sought a new mentor, but Squire Winslir was afflicted with a deep sense of either loyalty, twisted honor, or his own brand of madness, and he’d remained in Ebrenn’s service all these decades. Ebrenn was rumored to have employed unscrupulous wizards and sorcerers in the past and was supposed to keep monsters as pets and to have inhuman hordes, either as henchmen or prisoners, depending on the story you heard. This was not a man whose prisoner Aefsheen wanted to be. For that matter, he’d prefer to not even be an invited dinner guest.
Aefsheen tried to explain that he’d merely gotten lost in the storm, and offered to leave immediately, but they told him they had standing orders: Anyone who entered Sir Ebrenn’s land without immediately announcing himself at the castle was assumed to be a poacher or an invader and was to be arrested on sight. He’d resisted, and at first fought off his attackers, but then the squire landed a solid sideways blow with his lance across Aefsheen’s jaw, and the world had gone black. The next thing he knew, he was waking up from his dream of the Swarm, feeling hungover without having had the night of revelry to make it worth the headache.
He got up and crept to the door of his cell. He saw a stone hallway leading to his left and right, lit by torches in sconces set just close enough to provide dim lighting in this dungeon. The other side of the hallway appeared to be solid stonework, unbroken by any other cells or doors. He could hear stirrings off to his left and assumed he wasn’t the only prisoner.
“Pssst. Anyone there? Are you awake?” He asked in the Common speech, hoping the sounds weren’t coming from a guard sleeping at his post. In reply, he heard a wordless baritone grumbling.
“Humph. I’m awake, alright. Now, at any rate. Second time in the last few hours I’ve been awakened on your account. How’s your head? They had to carry you in here last night” the deep voice answered in the accent of the dwarves of Worldcrown Mountains.
“It hurts, and my jaw’s fairly swollen, but I’ve had worse from drinking at the wrong tavern.” Aefsheen replied with a chuckle.
“Well, welcome to the dungeons of the Mad Yeoman. From all accounts, he could hold us for life, let us out today, or have us killed at any time. I’ve heard he’s even pitted prisoners against each other in gladiatorial combat. Who knows?”
“Well, that’s … unfortunate. How long have you been here?” Aefsheen asked as he began investigating the lock on his cell door. It was a purely academic act, done out of habit and to occupy himself, since his captors had taken his lock picks along with everything else but his clothes.
“I’ve been here a week or so, assuming I haven’t lost track of the days. They keep the water pitchers filled regularly, but the meal schedule is pretty irregular, as is the quality. Sometimes it’s stale bread and moldy cheese, sometimes it’s a feast of roast mutton and potatoes. At any rate, the mercurial timing makes it hard to gauge time. My name is Fehrehngarr Stonehew, skald of the Clanfolk. Who might you be?”
“I’m Aefsheen. Question, Fehrehngarr: Have you tried escaping yet?”
“Oh, aye, it’s crossed my mind, lad. But I’m not capable of bending steel bars nor of burrowing through stone with my bare hands. I’m no picker of locks either. So here I sit until an opportunity presents itself. So far they haven’t made it easy. They don’t open the door – they just pass the food through the slot down by the floor and have me pass the chamber pot and empty pitcher through the same way.”
“How many guards do you see at a time?” Aefsheen inquired.
“Usually two, sometimes just one” came the answer.
“I may have an answer then. Wait a moment.” Aefsheen took off his jacket, and began rubbing a spot along the bottom hem against the roughhewn stone of the cell’s wall, fraying the thread of the hem. He pulled at the thread and removed a gold coin concealed there and dropped the jacket onto the bed.
“What are you up to over there, elf?”
“Half-elf, actually, my new friend, but I applaud your ear for voices. And plotting our escape is what I’m doing. The soldiers took my weapons and pouch, and emptied my pockets, but I have a few tricks. For example, this piece of gold that was hidden in the seam of my jacket. If there’s one thing I’m sure of regarding soldiers, it’s that to a man, they consider themselves overworked and underpaid. Makes them easy to bribe.”
“Humph. I can’t argue with that logic, but tell me this – what will you do when the guards take your gold and then leave you sitting there anyway?”
“I’m two steps ahead of you. I’ll offer it, then retreat to the rear wall of the cell. When the guard comes in, the door will be open and I’ll have my window of opportunity.”
“I admire your ambition, but they’re armed and armored. You’re neither. What do you hope to accomplish?”
Aefsheen sighed. “Fehrehngarr, you have no faith, but that’s forgivable, since we’ve only just met. This won’t be my first time fighting this type. Soldiers, city watch, gaolers – they’re all the same at their core. Assuming this one fights like the ones who took me last night, I think I’ll be alright. After all, it took four infantrymen and a mounted squire to bring me down. And if we’re visited by a pair of them, I’ll bide my time until there’s only one to better my odds.”
The pair passed the time with casual conversation. Aefsheen discovered that Fehrehngarr was from the Rockfall Clan, a group of nomadic dwarves roaming the Worldcrown Mountains. He was a skald, recording and reciting history and heroic tales in the form of songs and epic poetry. He’d gone off into the world to seek out new tales to add to his repertoire, and to find opportunity to add his own deeds to his library of songs. To that end, he’d served an enlistment in the mercenary company Swordsong. He’d just finished a three year enlistment and was headed home to reunite with his kinsmen, although he’d caught the wanderlust and would probably venture back out into the world after a bit.  Aefsheen, true to his own nature, revealed just enough of himself to achieve a rapport with Fehrehngarr. He spoke vaguely of growing up in the north, and of his travels as a drover and courier, carrying goods by consignment throughout the five baronies. Fehrehngarr, thinking of Aefsheen’s earlier comment about having fought watchmen and gaolers before, came to his own conclusions about what sort of goods Aefsheen ferried.
After an hour or so, they heard booted footfalls descending a stairway nearby. When Aefsheen realized there were two sets of boots, he quickly slipped the coin back into his pocket. The guards refilled the water pitchers and slid plates of food through the slots in the cell gates. At the sight and smell of eggs, ham, and dark rye bread, Aefsheen realized just how hungry he was and his mouth watered. It didn’t even matter that the food was cold and looked already picked at, hinting that it was probably leftovers from the soldiers’ mess.
The two prisoners ate their meals quickly, and one guard left to take the bucket of water back upstairs while the other waited to take the empty plates back. Seeing an opportunity, Aefsheen spoke up as he placed his plate on the floor and pushed it through the slot.
“Quite the meal, my good man. Thank you – much better than the jerky I was accused of poaching last night. So good of your master to feed his falsely accused prisoners so well.” As the guard started to bristle at the insult to his employer, Aefsheen produced the coin from his pocket. “I’ll wager so petty a nobleman isn’t likely to pay his soldiers well, eh?” The gold coin twirled across Aefsheen’s knuckles as he spoke, gleaming in the torchlight. “Here’s an interesting proposition – I’ll trade this coin for that ring of keys on your belt. It’s probably as much as the old miser pays you in a fortnight. More than enough to let you get away from here and start anew elsewhere.”
The guard slid the plate across the floor and away from the door with his foot. He reached for the key tucked into his belt. “These keys for that gold coin, you say?” He asked, greed in his eyes.
“Yes. Surely it’s a more than fair trade. Gold is worth so much more than iron…”
“Aye, that it is, poacher. That it is. However, I don’t like my chances of getting away from here alive if I did that. For that matter, I wouldn’t place any wagers on your escape, neither, if I did let you out. So why don’t we remove the temptation, and I’ll just confiscate your contraband. I’ll do you a favor and not even mention it to the others. That way, you won’t get into even more trouble. You’d likely be executed for attempting to bribe me.” With the last words, he drew his shortsword and moved to put a key into the lock.
Aefsheen moved toward the back of his cell, forcing the guard to come after him. Once inside the cell, the guard hooked the keys back onto his belt, held his sword at the ready, and extended his other hand, palm up, demanding the coin.
“I suppose I should’ve expected treachery from the hired sword of a knight who imprisons travelers for the crime of getting lost.” Aefsheen said with a heavy sigh and held out the coin, which he fumbled and dropped, sending it rolling between the soldier’s feet. As the man looked down at the rolling coin, Aefsheen acted quickly, grabbing his jacket from the bunk and whipping it over the other man’s head, then giving him a hard shove, sending him sprawling on the floor. The guard fumbled his sword, and Aefsheen stepped on the blade, pinning it to the ground. As he knelt and reached for the hilt, the guard freed himself from Aefsheen’s jacket and flung it aside. He put both hands on the sword’s handle and the two struggled over it. The guard was the stronger of the two and was about to wrest the weapon away when Aefsheen leaned over and drove his forehead into the supine man’s face. The stone floor prevented his head from rocking back to absorb the impact, so his nose and mouth took the full force of the blow and, dazed, his fingers loosened their grip for just long enough that the half elf took the sword away and stood up.
Aefsheen pointed the sword tip at the guard’s throat while he retrieved his jacket from the floor.
“I’ll take the keys now, if you don’t mind. Nice and slow.” As the guard handed them over to him, Aefsheen nodded his thanks and walked out of the cell, closing the door with a clang. “It only seems fair that I let you keep the coin after all that trouble. I just hope your superiors don’t find it and think you took the bribe…”
Fehrehngarr shook his head and chuckled at that last bit while Aefsheen unlocked his cell.
“Now, do you have any idea where our things are? We won’t get far without weapons, no matter how stealthy we may be.” Aefsheen asked the dwarf. Fehrengarr looked up at Aefsheen through eyebrows as bushy and red as his long beard, and replied “I’ve only seen guards come and go from that one direction.” He replied. Indeed, looking the opposite way from the stairs the guards had used, they saw only a few more yards of corridor and a couple more cell doors. Looking toward the stairs, they saw the corridor went beyond them and took a turn underneath the stairwell.
The pair headed that direction, came to the turn, and after cautiously peeking around the edge of the corner, continued on. Soon they came to a heavy wooden door. Aefsheen put his ear to the roughhewn surface and listened. After a couple moments of silence, he started trying keys in the lock. On the third try, the lock clicked open. He slowly opened the door while Fehrehngarr stood by with clenched fists, ready to jump into battle should anyone be lying in wait on the other side.
The door opened into a dusty, little used room. They saw piles of crates and chests stacked here and there. There were old weapons and sets of armor, traveling sacks and backpacks, all covered in deep layers of dust. Some of the metal implements were showing rust through the grubby accumulation. But closer to the door, lying atop a rotting wooden chest and piled on a creaky table, were their own belongings. Some of them, anyway. Fehrehngarr’s gear was all present: chain mail shirt, dagger and short sword with the red wrapped hilt and silver plated pommel in the shape of a harp (displaying his standing as honorably discharged from Swordsong), and his great battle scarred ax, pack, and the bag holding his lute and bagpipes. The only thing of Aefsheen’s to be seen was his armor and the pouch he carried on his belt.
“You go unarmed, do you, Aefsheen? Seems dangerous for a courier traveling alone.” Fehrehngarr commented.
“They must have disarmed me when they knocked me out. They probably put my weapons in my wagon – I’d have been lighter and easier to carry. Damn. I’ll just have to make do with the guard’s sword, since these others don’t exactly seem fit to use.”
Fehrehngarr pulled on his hauberk, strapped on his sword belt and hefted his battleax, and Aefsheen donned his leather breastplate studded with steel rivets. They surveyed the room and saw two doors at the other end, and made their way there through the clutter. The first door wasn’t locked, and Aefsheen eased it open. They slipped through and found themselves in a larder. There were crates of various foods and sacks of flour and other ingredients on tables along the walls. There was a large icebox in one corner, and an open stairwell leading upward in the middle of the wall on their left. There was light coming down that stairway, and they could hear kitchen sounds. Likely the next meal was being prepared. As shadows grew on the stairwell, they beat a hasty but silent retreat back out of the pantry to the storage chamber and closed the door as quickly as they thought possible while remaining quiet. Their options were to go up the stairs the guards used to get to the cells, which seemed ill advised, or the other door leading out of this locker. After a brief discussion, they opted for the door in front of them. It had layers of dust and cobwebs built up on it, to the point of obscuring the seam between door and jamb. It had obviously not been used in many years.
Fearing a squeaky hinge would give away their presence, the pair searched the store room and found a discarded oilcan that still contained some thin, watery oil at the bottom and they applied it as well as they could to the hinges. The door was so encrusted, it took both of them pulling on the ring in the center of its face to open it. Even freshly oiled, the hinges squeaked and the wood, so long settled in place, creaked loudly enough for them to halt at one point, fearing the sound would be heard from the kitchen, even through a door and two rooms. They heard nothing from the kitchen, but they could hear sounds of alarm coming from the direction of the cells. It had only been a matter of time before the locked up soldier was missed and discovered, and that time had come. They’d run out of options. They yanked the door open another foot, which allowed them to get through. They plunged ahead through a curtain of cobwebs, pulling the spidery silk off their faces as they went.
They heard calls behind them as they ran blindly down the web filled space. “After them – they’re getting away!”
The space beyond was more tunnel than hallway, unfinished earthen walls, supported at irregular intervals by rotting wooden beams collapsed in places, allowing soil to landslide down, partially blocking their way and forcing them to climb over or run around small mounds of loose dirt.
The tunnel smelled of damp earth, rotting wood, and decay. They could hear other shouts now, from the door. Orders and refusals: “Go in after them!” “I’m not going in the tunnels – we all know what he keeps down there!” “You’ll follow orders or answer for it, coward!” “I’m no coward, but I won’t go down there with those unnatural *things*!” “Fools! The Harvestmen are rumor and myth. Stories told to scare children and keep them from trespassing on Sir Ebrenn’s estate. Now get in there!”
Sounds of scuffling reached their ears, above even the sound of their own labored breathing as they ran and wondered what had the soldiers so frightened. They rounded a bend in the tunnel and stopped to catch their breath. Fehrehngarr pulled remnants of spider web from his beard as Aefsheen nudged a small snake away from his foot. As a dwarf and a half-elf, they could see in the darkness of the tunnel, so had not bothered with any of the torches from their places on the dungeon wall, but they could see the light from torches carried by the soldiers begin to slowly creep in their direction. Apparently the sergeant had proven scarier than whatever bogeyman the men feared in the tunnels. They began their flight anew. Here and there, they began to see small tunnels branching off the main one. These obviously weren’t dug by men, because they weren’t even with the floor of the main passage. They were at seemingly random heights, even through the ceiling, and they had to watch their footing lest they step in one. The smaller passages didn’t always fork off at right angles. When the pair bothered to look, most of the smaller tunnels seemed to twist in odd turns and directions, and many looked to be lined with a white silky coating.
The tunnel they ran through gradually devolved from the structured, semi-finished passage it had started as to a simply dug, rounded hole through the earth and began to twist and turn like those side tunnels they'd passed.
They began to notice an upward incline to the tunnel, and they could just make out a hazy light up ahead, as if daylight were creeping around a doorsill. Just as they started to feel some hope of escape, they began to hear a new noise mixed in with that of their labored breathing and the clamor of the soldiers blundering through the tunnel in pursuit. From all around them, they heard an odd skittering noise, much like the sound a beetle might make as it crawls across a piece of parchment.
Then, in the semidarkness of the tunnel, they saw the first of the creatures. At first, neither believed his eyes, because the images were so surreal. Dozens of what appeared to be gigantic spiders crawled out of the twisted cross tunnels. Up through the floor and down from the ceiling, as well as from all sides, they climbed over each other in their haste, presenting a chaotic swirling tableau of oddly jointed legs like crooked stilts, all racing each other to get to the two adventurers. Each one seemed to be about a foot tall, with a body about the same size, and a leg span of at least five feet. But that was the most easily digestible part of what they saw. What took them valuable seconds to believe was the human face on the front of each of the creatures, and the fact that the first pair of limbs wasn’t spidery legs, but humanoid hands. As though that weren’t bad enough, several of the creatures held sticks or rocks in their hands, presumably as weapons. If the horrid screeching sounds issuing from those ghastly mouths was speech, it was no language either man had heard before.
As the beasts drew closer to the front, and the soldiers closed their distance from the rear, the two men felt real fear creeping at the sides of their minds, threatening to swarm panic over them. They gripped their weapons and looked at each other. “More inspiration for your tales, if we survive, eh, skald?” joked Aefsheen with gallows humor. Fehrehngarr adjusted his grip on his ax, gave it a flourish and replied “Don’t stand too close to me when it starts – an ax requires a wide berth in battle. Shall we?”
“Ready when you are.” Aefsheen readied his stolen sword. Fehrehngarr gave a great roar, lifted his ax, and charged into the cluster of monstrosities with a mighty swing. As he cleaved the head of one, Aefsheen thrust his blade into the face of another. They pulled their weapons free, and not caring to try to kill all the man-faced creatures, began to hew a path through the crowd.  They pushed and fought their way through the arachnid throng, making progress by ax stroke and sword thrust, spilling foul blue ichor from the unnatural beasts. For their part, the monsters, through sheer weight of numbers, took their toll on the pair trying to escape this nightmare dungeon. Aefsheen and Fehrehngarr both were covered in deep bruises and shallow cuts from their clubs and stones. The two could better see the light coming into the tunnel now. It looked as though the tunnel led outside and its opening had been loosely capped. They hacked their way towards it.
A great beast of a harvestman made a leap and landed on Fehrehngarr’s chest, wrapping its spider legs around his back and grabbing his beard with its humanlike hands. He could feel others pummeling his legs, and a well-placed blow to the back of his knee caused his legs to buckle. As the beast on his chest lowered its mouth toward his face, fangs dripping with venom, Fehrehngarr dropped his ax and began wrestling with the creature, trying to keep its teeth away from his flesh. A dollop of poison dropped onto his cheek and he felt his skin burn and smelled his whiskers singe. As other monsters crawled onto him, he began to lose his struggle and the fangs drew closer to his cheek. His arms shook with the effort of pushing it away, and just as he felt the tips of those murderous fangs make contact with his flesh, he saw the beast’s head flinch, and the point of a sword exited its forehead. As the blade retracted, he shoved the corpse off himself while Aefsheen set to work slashing at the others who’d crawled aboard the fallen dwarf.
As Fehrehngarr regained his feet, he could see Aefsheen being overrun himself. Not daring to swing the ax and risk cutting the half elf as well as the man-spiders, he drew his own sword and set to work skewering and prying the monsters to free his comrade.
As they were freeing themselves from the onslaught, they noticed a slight ebb in the arachnid tide. They could hear screams from the way they’d come, indicating that the troops had now encountered the swarm.
Aefsheen had a flashback to that first attack by the Swarm he’d helped to found. He saw the irony that he now faced almost certain death at the hands of another type of swarm. If he ever survived, this would make for the perfect tale to share with Danniven and the other remaining founding members back in Oakyard. But first, he had to survive.
Fehrehngarr spoke, “Aefsheen! Stay with me, friend. It’ll take both of us to make it out of here.” Aefsheen shook his head, clearing his mind of the flashback. Fehrehngarr picked up his ax and continued “If I use my ax properly, it takes both my hands, but here – borrow my sword. Do you ever fight with two weapons? It might make the difference.”
Aefsheen replied “It’s how I prefer to fight, actually. These blades are a bit shorter than I’m used to, but they’ll do.”
They resumed their push toward the light. As Aefsheen thrust and slashed to both sides with the pair of shortswords, and Fehrehngarr hacked and swept his way through the arachnid hybrids, they heard a renewed pursuit coming toward them. Just ahead, they saw a large, round stone blocking what looked to be their exit out of this hellhole. There were just a few yards of distance and only a couple of the creatures between them and daylight. They each dispatched a man-spider and then both broke into a run for the stone blocking the exit. Coordinating their timing, they both crashed into it with their shoulders, hoping against hope that their weight and momentum would open their escape route and let them get away from the horrific horde behind them.
Breaking free from the spider hole into the sunlight, they shoved the capstone aside and their momentum carried them to the ground. As they caught their breath, they took in their surroundings. They were in a small, lightly wooded, naturally bowl shaped hollow a few dozen yards across, whose sides sloped up to the crest about twenty feet higher than where they lay. There were fallen trees and boulders strewn around the depression, all covered in webs still beaded with moisture from last night’s rain. They also spotted too many web-obscured lumps that looked uncomfortably humanoid shaped. There was a light scattering of web strands across the rest of the ground as well, resembling a light frost, while the lower branches of trees might as well have been subjected to a blizzard for all the white clinging to and hanging from them.
As the pair stood up, they heard more battle sounds from the tunnel, but more ominously, as they looked toward it, they heard a loud rustling from the fallen leaves beneath the trees behind them. They turned to find another cadre of the spiderlike monsters approaching them from the leaves, while their second line dropped on webs from higher branches.
The fight began anew as the adventurers thrust sword and swung ax, and did their best to dodge and parry stones and sticks. They could hear the fight from the tunnel getting closer, and just when they were beginning to wonder if they’d run out of stamina before their enemy ran out of numbers, they saw the knight’s guards hack their way into the sunlight, having finally overcome the spiders in the tunnel. The guards emerged blinking at the sun’s brightness contrasting with the tunnel they’d just fought through. They seemed confused as to whether they should continue to pursue Aefsheen and Fehrehngarr, or to fight the creatures. The question was answered for them as a new pack of Huntsmen broke away from the main force and encircled them.
After what seemed an eternity of fighting, hearing the screams of men and the horrific screeching of man-spiders, enduring the bruises and cuts of wounds, and feeling the burn of cramping muscles in desperate need of rest, the two escapees found themselves backed up against a web-shrouded boulder alongside the last two soldiers left alive. The giant spiders seemed to be regrouping in a semicircle facing the four. Everyone on both sides seemed to be taking the moment to catch their breath. Hearing the guards ragged breath, seeing one looked like he was about to die, Aefsheen steeled himself to take his last stand. He spoke, “Fehrehngarr, this looks like the end. Shame, too – I feel we could have been friends under other circumstances.” For his part, the skald looked around at his impromptu battle mates and took a deep breath. When he spoke, his sonorous voice carried the authority of a historian and the inspiration of a poet. “Few against a throng Captain Asfandiar Cried out ‘Cut down the vile invaders!’
He raised Troll-Sunder Swung down the notched blade and Elf heroes laid waste to orc raiders”
Raising his ax blade as he spoke the last stanza, he then roared and charged the gathered spider throng. Aefsheen, inspired by recognizing the name in the poem, gave both blades a whirling flourish and leapt back into the fray with renewed vigor. The soldiers, encouraged by Fehrehngarr’s oration, began once more to swing their own swords.
There weren’t so many monsters left now, and by this time, the men had begun to figure out the weak spots to aim for, and soon turned the tide. There was a scream, and Aefsheen and Fehrehngarr, having each dispatched the last of the creatures facing them, turned to see only the sergeant left alive. He was disarmed, on his back, wrestling with one of the beasts, much like Fehrehngarr had been earlier. The dwarf strode steadily toward him, drew back his ax and swung. The blade bit right through the monster, cutting it in half, sending the two pieces scattering, and covering the soldier in blue blood, but sparing him the venom that had killed his companion beside him.
“You could have left me to die and made good your escape. Why did you help me?” the man at arms asked, and Fehrehngarr replied “No, I couldn’t. Have no doubt I’ll be leaving, but I couldn’t walk away from any man and leave him to die such an unnatural way. If you wish a clean death in battle, let’s take a moment to recover our energy and we’ll have a go at it. Otherwise, I’m walking away now.”
“Not at all. You’ve more than earned your release as far as I’m concerned. Looking at some of those shapes wrapped up in webs, I think I know what happened to some of our ‘deserters’, and what would have happened to me and the bodies of my men had you not intervened.” He looked over to Aefsheen, who was using the shirt of one of the fallen to clean the sword blades. “I’ll retrieve your wagon and deliver it to you on the road near where you were captured last night. Just wait until after nightfall when the knight and the squire have retired for the evening.”
Aefsheen nodded his thanks and replied “Just don’t wait too long. If I don’t have reins in hand by midnight, I’ll come back in for it myself. And I won’t be caught unaware this time.”
 ________________________________________________________________
Later that night, having regained his wagon, donned his own swordbelts, and returned Fehrehngarr’s blade, Aefsheen took shook the reins and set his team to a relaxed canter despite the rain having started again. There would be no stopping tonight – he wanted as much distance as possible between himself and whatever dark wizardry was responsible for what they’d just survived. He looked over to the dwarf seated next to him and asked “What was that bit of poetry you called out back there?” The dwarf shrugged and replied “Oh that was just the end of the Tale of Asfandiar Silverthorn. I’m surprised you’re not familiar – it’s a true tale that took place during the Orc War up in your part of the world.” “Oh, I know that much. We just didn’t hear a lot of poetry or singing in my quarter. Well, at least none that wasn’t lewd.” They shared a laugh that helped relieve some of the day’s tension. Then Aefsheen got serious. He was distrustful by nature, both from upbringing and profession, but this man knew things he wanted to hear. Plus, they’d just saved each other’s’ life. He decided to let himself trust the bard.
“Some time you’ll have to tell me the rest of the poem. To be honest, I’ve heard quite a few stories about Asfandiar. For example, did you know that Asfandiar took a human wife in the Treeguard Barony?”
“I’ve heard rumors about Asfandiar Silverthorn’s human woman, aye. But the historians are divided on how true it is.”
“Humph. The elves provided a proper funeral for him, but then abandoned his widow and child afterwards… Yes, any tales you’ve heard of Asfandiar, I’d love to hear them, my new friend. And in exchange, perhaps I can supply you with some you haven’t heard.” Fehrehngarr stole a glance at the man he’d just met, looked at the head and face that was shaped like an elf, but bore beard and mustache like a human and started to ponder.
“Aefsheen, are you saying –“
Aefsheen cut him off and said “I’m saying that in my mother’s house, in the mill quarter of the city of Oakyard, on the wall above her fireplace is an elfmade longsword, with a prominent notch in one edge, hanging below a scrap of banner from the Elderwood kingdom.
I didn’t tell you my surname, did I? It’s Silverthorn.”

Arc V Anniversary Day 30
Day 30. Post-Canon headcanons/thoughts:
I have a few headcanons for the characters after the events of the series. I already mentioned a few of them in a previous prompt, but Yuya and Yuzu start dating not too long after the finale. The other counterparts soon follow suit, although it takes awhile for Yuri and Serena to develop feelings for each other. Much like Yuya, Yuzu regains more of her memories as Ray. It's only a few pieces and feelings at first, but she is soon able to remember much of her previous life. It does take her awhile to process everything, especially when she was in kind of a limbo spirit state with the other girls after Zarc was defeated, but with the love and support of Yuya, Gongenzaka, Sora and Shuzo, she is able to accept that she is both Yuzu and Ray at the same time. She also takes the time to rework her deck from the ground up to represent all of the Bracelet Girls. It is challenging since their archetypes aren't designed to play together like the Dimensional Dragons are, but she is able to pull it off and eventually becomes a pro duelist as well.
Dennis sets up his own You Show Duel School in Heartland and he effectively becomes the head teacher. Kaito sometimes joins in to help him with lessons, but he's also busy helping to take care of his younger brother Haruto. He doesn't like being too far away from his family after the dimensional war. Ed also joins the school to learn more about Entertainment Dueling, but his main priority is to help rebuild Heartland. It does take a long time for Heartland to be restored and even afterwards, no one in the Xyz dimension feels comfortable seeing Fusion monsters or Polymerization. The scars of the dimensional war run deep, but they are able to enjoy dueling thanks to Yuya and Dennis. Dennis does enjoy meeting up with Yuya, but he is nervous to be around Yuzu at first. He still feels guilty over what he did, especially with Ruri. Both Yuzu and Ruri try to reassure him. Even though they are fused together, the counterparts feel at ease about it. They were originally the same person, so staying fused together with Yuya and Yuzu feels natural for them. It still takes awhile for Dennis to not feel a flood of guilt whenever he sees Yuzu. I don't think that Shun completely forgives Dennis for kidnapping his sister and starting the Heartland invasion, but knowing that both Yuto and Ruri are still alive still helps him to feel more at ease. They can't live together in one dimension like they used to, but they aren't gone forever either. Seeing Dennis' determination to help make the kids in Heartland smile and teach them the values of Entertainment Dueling does help Shun to be more comfortable around him and he agrees to some demonstration duels for Dennis' students from time to time.
It still takes awhile for the City to be completely rid of the Commons and Tops structure of their society, but it is a much better place now that Roger and the Council are long gone. Chojiro goes back to helping kids enjoy dueling and his presence really helps both sides as they struggle to rebuild their society. Crow of course also helps with entertaining the kids, but he always takes extra care of Frank, Amanda and Tanner. They want to become strong Entertainment Duelists as well. Jack also helps with rebuilding their society. He is the former King, but he is still admired and respected throughout the City. Chojiro eventually decides to make his own You Show Duel School with both Jack and Crow as teachers. They eventually become friends, but their relationship is different from how it was in 5D's. Yuya also comes by to duel both Jack and Crow and just hang out together. Jack does eventually meet with the Arc V version of Carly and they become a couple as well.
Leo effectively abolishes Academia. There are still students left there during the finale, but the school is still in ruins after the battle against Zarc and Leo is no longer focused on reviving Ray, so Academia no longer exists. He also decides to remain in Fusion instead of living with his family in Pendulum. After everything Leo did, he didn't think he deserved to be with them and he obviously didn't want to be in charge of another school again. He wanted to spend his time being a scientist again and learning more about the four dimensions. Reiji is perfectly okay with this. Even though Reiji is no longer carrying all of his anger and hatred towards his father, he also doesn't feel comfortable living together with Leo again. Reiji devotes himself almost entirely to raising Reira. He still runs LDS, but he also doesn't want Himika to raise Reira. Even though she felt guilty for how she treated Reira before, Reiji didn't want to risk Himika having a negative impact on her again, so his time is divided between raising Reira and his duties as the CEO of LDS. Yuya does help out as an honorary big brother to Reira and Reiji gives her a new teddy bear to comfort her as well. Asuka, along with all of the other Fusion You Show Duel School students, decided to take over Academia and rebuild it from the ground up. It takes quite some time for the Academia mindset to be completely erased from Fusion, but Asuka is able to show these former child soldiers that dueling can make people happy instead of causing destruction. Sora is happy to see Academia change from a prison to a fun school, but he prefers to live in Pendulum and go to the original You Show Duel School. That is where his first real friends live after all, so he decides to move there permanently and lives right with Yuya and his family.
Shuzo insists that Yusho becomes the head teacher at You Show again, but Yusho doesn't want to take over the position after his friend had done such a great job in his absence. They decide to run the school together, although sometimes Yusho goes to Fusion to check on Asuka. He doesn't leave for too long. Being apart from Yuya and Yoko for all those years was quite hard on him as well, but he also doesn't want to abandon all of his students in the Fusion dimension either. Gongenzaka is still focused on improving his Steadfast dueling, but he'll still frequently come over to You Show to help out. They have a lot more people interested in their school after Yuya defeated Reiji, so the school is often quite busy. Yuya enjoys traveling to different dimensions and meeting up with all of his friends, but nothing makes him happier than being right alongside Yuzu. They can be dueling, talking or walking quietly, but Yuya will still have such a bright smile whenever they're together. That is a big reason why it doesn't take long for them to officially become a couple. Yuya is busy with being a pro duelist, having matches against both Yusho and Jack from time to time and Yuzu has to work on her own efforts to become a pro duelist, but they always make time for each other. They never like being away from each other for too long though. They give each other hugs after they've been away for more than a day. Gongenzaka often joins in because he loves seeing his two best friends be so happy together. After they're older, Yuya and Yuzu eventually get married and become an Entertainment Dueling couple. Yuzu has to take time off when she becomes pregnant, but with so many loving friends and new grandparents to help them out, it isn't too long before she duels right alongside Yuya again. Their children grow up admiring both their mother and father, hoping to make people smile with their own dueling styles in the future.
I also want to thank @arcvanniversary for setting up this month's event. It's been so great to see so many people wanting to celebrate Arc V, especially with this being the fifth anniversary of the series as well. Seeing the different answers for the creative and discussion prompts have been so great. I love having the chance to talk about Arc V and even with all of these responses in mind, I'm not sure if I have been able to capture just how much I love Arc V or what it means to me. I do love seeing more positivity and celebration for the series and I hope that we'll be able to have another event next year.

What are some good skin care tips for women?
Tumblr media
We all vision of perfect, blushing skin but with new products continuously hitting the shelves and the apparently endless skincare advice out there on the social media and Internet websites, it's not every time easy to figure out the skincare routine that's going to effort best for you. You know the essentials drink ample of water, get plenty of sleep, and rinse your face, but what about all in between? Fortunately, there’s no requirement to shell out lots of cash on any magical processes or exclusive creams to achieve perfect skin.
Sunblock is the nearby thing we have to a fountain of youth. It actually can slow down skin old. It can as well as help stop skin cancer. Look for a sunblock that offers broad-spectrum defense. Though it's essential to protect infants' skin from the sun.
Smoking hurries up how fast your skin ages. If you smoke, your wounds will also take longer to settle. And study shows that smoking gets worse some skin diseases.
Anytime you tanned inside or outdoor, you early age your skin. You as well increase your risk of receiving skin cancer. A self-tanner can provide you the appearance you want without the risks. To save your skin well, you want to save it from the sun even when applying a self-tanner.
If you've been sweltering heavily or have a serious bad skin flare, it may look natural to scrub your skin. Don't! Cleansing annoys your skin, which can worsen any skin state, including acne. Wash when you wake removes the dirt and germs that settle on your face while napping. Earlier bed, you want to remove makeup and dirt, such as pollution, smoke, or dust, which may have landed on your skin.  Wet it with warm water. Then put on a minor cleanser, gently applying the cleanser in a round motion with your fingertips. Finish by completely rinsing off the cleaner and gently patting your face dry with a hygienic towel.
Finding well ways to achieve stress can assist your skin, too. Some skin diseases like psoriasis. Eczema often seems for the first phase when someone feels really stressed.
Understanding and receiving to identify your skin kind is the most main thing you can do for your skin. If you’re ignorant or mislead, you could compromise your skin’s natural balance and activate irritation, inflammation, breaks, and even early aging by using the incorrect products. The Revive ME (face) kit products are made for most mutual skin types that are oily, acne-prone, dehydrated, sensitive, and mature skin. It’s also important to remind that you can be additional than one type and it can change over time or through the periods, so at all times listen to your skin
Everybody’s skin is continuously changing and adjusting to its surrounding atmosphere. This is why it’s so significant to switch up your skincare, not only for the periods but also according to your age. As you age, the stages of collagen in your skin begin to weakening (bummer, we know), and your skin have a habit of to dry out. You can also develop skin conditions in your 20s like adult acne. This is why it’s great

101 Beauty Tips for Girls
Tumblr media
101 Beauty Tips for Girls There are about a million beauty tips floating around out there on the internet—but that definitely doesn’t mean we should be following every single one of them. A YouTube or Instagram account does not a beauty expert make, but when working makeup artists, hairstylists, skincare gurus and beauty editors are offering up advice, you better believe we’re listening! From secrets about how to style your hair without heat to brilliant ways to fix a broken compact case, the more beauty tips you have in your arsenal, the better you’ll be prepared to handle every situation thrown at you. Here are the things we think everyone should know. 101. “Always keep your summer makeup minimal. Minimal and sheer makeup is the way to go when it’s hot and muggy outside.” — Mary Greenwell, celebrity makeup artist 100. “The best thing to do when you go to a makeup counter is be armed with what it is you want to do.”— Raychel Wade, founder of Cheek to Chic and La Prairie’s colour ambassador 99. Use excess eye cream on cuticles. The more you hydrate your cuticles, the stronger your nails will be. 98. For smudge-proof eye makeup, take blotting tissue to remove any oil or any excess makeup from the eye area. Then, apply a small dab of cream concealer to hold things in place. 97. “A good perfume should consist of balanced blend of notes arranged in a way that creates harmonious accord.”— Alexis Bergman, P&G’s Global Flavor and Fragrance Trends 96. To prevent hair color from fading in the summer months, use a conditioning treatment weekly or bi-monthly. 95. Breakout before a big event? “Take oral cortisone a few days before the event to clear your skin.”— Ava Shamban, dermatologist and author of Heal Your Skin. 94. “In order to keep eyeliner from running and smearing, opt for liner formulas that offer stayproof wearability.”— Robin Schoen, Urban Decay Makeup Artist 93. Always allow about two fingers from your nose to where blush starts. 92. “Make sure you hydrate the skin and put on a primer.”— Jessie Powers, makeup artist and national educator for Make Up For Ever 91. “Balance out your shimmer. If you’re doing a shimmery eye, opt for a matte lipstick.”— Raychel Wade, founder of Cheek to Chic and La Prairie’s colour ambassador 90. Brush out your curls with your fingers to give your hair a more tousled look. 89. To make your manicure last, apply a thin layer of clear every two days. Pay particular attention to the free edge at the top of your nails, where chips usually happen, and apply extra clear polish there. 88. Wear white eyeliner in your water line to make eyes appear less red. 87. “Take a shimmery gloss to the center of your lips, top and bottom—this will attract light to your lips, making them look pouty.”— Katrina Barrion, makeup artist for Giella Custom Blend Cosmetics 86. For slicked back hair, use a hair serum. 85. For the perfect cat-eye, “select a thin liner brush that is tapered to the point” and use a gel eyeliner for extra saying power. — Pamela Taylor, makeup artist. 84. To make your cheek bones appear higher, use bronzer under the cheekbone and highlighter on the actual cheekbone, and remember to blend. Contouring at its finest! 83. Before you blow dry, start with a volumizing spray or light gel to give the roots some lift. Pull the brush up towards the ceiling to really boost volume. 82. For fuller lips, extend the lip line using a flesh tone lip liner. Be careful not to go overboard. 81. The #1 reason for flaky mascara is that the formula is too dry or old. Make sure to close mascara after use to help keep its moisture. To extend the life a bit, add 2-3 drops of saline solution into the tube and swirl the brush around. 80. To fake clear skin when you notice a pimple, “Apply tea tree oil as soon as you spot it”— Stephanie Flor, makeup artist. 79. “It’s easy to forget that feet can get sunburned. Be sure to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 50 when barefoot.”— Dr. Leslie Campbell, DPM. 78. For acne-free skin, look for a cleanser with salycilic acid or benzoyl peroxide. 77. When choosing a red lipstick, you just want to remember to get one that looks good with your undertone. If you have a warm undertone, then go for warmer reds, and if you have a cool undertone, then go cooler. 76. Sunscreens that claim to provide “all-day protection” and “water resistance” are not reliable; don’t be fooled by these claims and reapply all sunscreens at least every 2-3 hours. 75. When self-tanning, use a tanner with a guide color. “It will give you instant color before the effect and it will show you exactly where you put the color and where you may have missed.”— Sinead Norenius, founder of Beautisol. 74. “If you’re afraid of red lipstick, I love putting it on and then blotting it off to wear it as more of a stain”— Pat McGrath, makeup artist. Another way to make it less intense? Apply with your fingertip instead of straight from the tube. 73. For the summer months, you don’t want to be caked down in foundation, so try a tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead. 72. Use blotting papers to manage oil and shine in your T-Zone, “which are also great for cleaning up around the eyes”— Rebecca Restrepo, makeup artist. 71. The antihistamines in allergy medicine dry out the skin, so skip heavy foundation during allergy season. Instead, use a tinted moisturizer. 70. To make curls last, make sure hair is completely dry before you begin with the curling iron. Also, use a heat protectant spray with hold on damp hair to keep hair protected. 69. To make a zit go away faster, don’t pick at it. The bacteria on your fingers will create more redness, and any attempt at popping will make things worse. 68. Use an exfoliator to get rid of dead skin, but limit yourself to 2-3 times a week so you don’t dry out your skin. Use a gentler scrub on your face and a coarser scrub on the rest of your body. 67. Always wash your makeup off before bed. “That morning-after look has never been a good one, for anyone.”— Rachel Adler, beauty director 66. “Too much bronzer is a nightmare for pale skin”— Jason Ascher, resident beauty expert for Barneys New York 65. Pick a sulfate-free shampoo, as sulfates can be harsh and drying on the hair cuticle. 64. If you have greasy hair, avoid directly conditioning roots and condition from your ear down to ends. 63.”When you wear a red lip it’s important that it stays exactly where you put it. Using a long wearing lip pencil to create the perfect shape and a lip color are key to having a perfect red lip.”— Kristofer Buckle, celebrity makeup artist 62. To make volume last all day, avoid running your fingers through hair. “Oil from your hands can weigh down your roots leaving your hair flat at the end of the day”— Tatum Neill, Arrojo Studio 61. Try to avoid washing your hair everyday. Constant shampooing leaves hair dry and your scalp will create more oils to compensate for the loss of moisture. Instead, use a dry shampoo and style your hair into a braid or ponytail when it’s a bit more oily. 60. Always use a moisturizer with SPF in the morning. Even in the winter! 59.”Go for a trim every 6-8 weeks to ensure you have no damaged ends making your hair look unhealthy”— Nick Arrojo, Arrojo Studio (and the man who worked for seven years changing lives on What Not To Wear) 58. Remember, clean your makeup brushes to fight against potential bacteria and breakouts. At least once a week, swirl brushes around in a mixture of warm water and mild soap, then lay flat to dry. 57. Clean out your makeup bag at least once a year to get rid of old products that may be expired or you no longer use. 56. Winter can be especially harsh on your hair leaving it extra dry. Eugene Davis, celebrity hair stylist suggests using an Avocado Oil Hair Mask. 55. If you don’t have nail polish remover, apply clear nail polish over your nail, and then wipe off. It will remove old polish. 54. During the summer, wear lip balm or gloss with SPF. 53. To add volume to clean or unwashed hair, use a dry shampoo spray. 52.Change your beauty routine for spring and summer months. Your skin needs less coverage during the spring so you can swap the heavy, winter products for lighter ones. 51.”I always think that less is more. There’s a point where you look in the mirror and say ‘Is this too much?’ and if you even have that inclination then it usually is.”— Kim Catrall, “Sex and the City” 50. When applying bronzer, “first start by applying it around the perimeter of your face and follow with a light dusting on your forehead, nose and chin.”— Mally Roncal, Mally Beauty. 49. To get curls when you have straight hair, use, “a volumizer or volume thickening agent, a curl enhancing product, light holding finishing spray.”— Vicktor Stevenson, Hair Stylist. 48.”Foundation should never be heavy.”— Aura Schwartz, makeup artist. Apply liquid foundation with a damp makeup sponge for best results. 47.”The right red will light up your hair, eyes and skin immediately, the wrong one will not.”— Poppy King, Lipstick Queen 46. To clean up the flick of a cat eye, use a dampened, pointed Q-tip. 45.To revive curls mid-day, “Take a very small amount of pomade and put it in the palms of your hands. Rub them together. Next gently smooth the pomade over your curls and scrunch just a little bit.”— Eugene Davis, celebrity hair stylist 44.”You should always go to a hair-removal specialist, where waxing, laser etc. is their main business – don’t go to a nail salon for a wax”— Cindy Barshop, Completely Bare and Bravo’s “RHONYC” 43.”A little silvery-blue eyeliner on the lower lid is very flirty.”— Dimitri James, makeup artist, author and creator of Skinn Cosmetics 42.”Use your concealer as a base on your eyelids.”— Melissa Silver, Maybelline makeup artist. Concealer will help to absorb oil and your eyeshadow will stick to the product instead of your lids, making it stay longer. 41. If you’re not a fan of liquid liner, get the look of liquid eye liner by using a gel instead. 40. Exfoliate before applying self tanner to get rid of dead skin. Tanning products tend to cling to drier areas and rougher areas, like your knees and elbows, so make sure they’re moisturized first. 39. If you straighten your hair with a flat-iron, cause less heat damage by letting hair air dry. The less heat, the better! 38. To minimize pores, use a pore-minimizing facial wash followed by a toner. Make sure the toner is alchohol-free so it won’t dry out your skin. 37. The healthier you are, the healthier your hair! Take a daily multi-vitamin with Biotin to help hair grow faster. 36.To mask split ends, use an iron to straighten ends and then apply a hair repair cream. 35.There are always cheap, natural and effective homemade beauty recipes. 34.To fix brassy hair color, use a color-depositing shampoo with purple tones. For unwanted redness, use a color-depositer with a green tone. 33. To cover up roots in a hurry, use a dry shampoo spray for your hair color. If you don’t keep this product around, use eyeshadow (in a shade closest to your hair color) for a quick fix. 32. Get a “dewy glow” using a highlighter or illuminator above your cheekbones and on the brow bone, just underneath your eyebrows. 31. To contour cheeks, use a matte powder (a few shades darker than your skin tone) with an angled brush. Blend on temples and under cheek bone. 30.When using a cream product (blush or eyeshadow), lock it in by using a translucent powder over it. 29. Get quick volume by using a root lifter, then use hairspray to set hair. This will prevent it from falling flat during the day. 28. For makeup that lasts all day and night, use a makeup-sealing product like a setting spray. 27. To help you find the right shade of foundation, choose the product you think is closest to your color and try it on your jaw line in natural light. You will be able to easily compare it to your neck’s color to see if you need to go for a different undertone, lighter or darker. 26. Try out the funky hair color trends without dyeing your hair. Instead, dust bright blush in your ponytail for the same effect. (Refinery29) 25. “Foot perspiration is typical in the summer and can lead to fungal infection and unwanted odor. Wash feet daily, and let them dry thoroughly before putting shoes on.”— Dr. Leslie Campbell, DPM. 24. Splurge on items that are important to you.”If mascara is really your thing and you fall in love with a mascara that’s $40, buy the mascara.”— Raychel Wade, founder of Cheek to Chic and La Prairie’s colour ambassador 23.”Don’t be too serious: It’s only Makeup! “— Francois NARS insists you play around with new colors. 22. To reduce unwanted shine, use a moisturizer that mattifies your skin. That way you get the moisture your skin needs without looking greasy. 21. To create a lived-in look for your hair, use thickening or sea-salt mist before you blow-dry. Follow by running a volumizing or texture cream through hair. 20. When using an eyeshadow primer, only place the primer where you’ll be adding color. 19.”Cream rouge should be the first thing that touches your cheeks when you want to project an image of healthy and pinched cheeks.”— Pablo Manzoni, former creative director for Elizabeth Arden 18. If you choose to use false eyelashes, remember to use the dark glue as it will blend in with the lashes. 17. When buying “organic” beauty products, make sure to check if they are FDA certified organic. This will prevent you from getting scammed. 16. Use a facial exfoliater bi-weekly to get dead skin of dead skin. Makeup will look better on a clean, smooth canvas. 15. After using a hair conditioning mask, follow with “a cold water rinse to close the hair cuticles.”— Ursala Stephensen, celebrity stylist. 14. Following Black Ops III‘s DLC season and the unexpected release of Zombies Chronicles, hopes were high regarding Treyarch’s Black Ops 4. Apparently poised to be the ultimate experience for fans of Call of Duty’s longtime staple horde mode, Black Ops 4 zombies deviated drastically from the established formula to the disappointment of many dedicated fans.
RELATED: 10 Best Call Of Duty Campaigns In Franchise History, Ranked
One of the most controversial changes was the removal of the Jugger-Nog perk, which had been a mainstay of the mode since World At War. In fact, the perk system was considerably overhauled, and, while some new perks fell completely flat, others turned out to be surprisingly useful.
Updated on September 7th, 2021 by Tanner Fox: While Black Ops 4 attempted to take zombies in a bold new direction, many players found the new maps to be too big, the new systems to be too complicated, and the over-the-top Easter eggs to be needlessly complex. Cold War reversed this trend, making the mode much more approachable for new players.
That said, Black Ops 4 hasn’t been entirely forgotten by CoD fans, and, with perks from the fourth installment of Call of Duty’s Black Ops subseries recently appearing in Cold War, it may be worth brushing up on some of the 2018 game’s best additions.
15 Death Perception
Tumblr media
Added to Cold War midway through the game’s lifecycle, Death Perception was first made available after the 2018 launch of Black Ops 4. Discredited by many fans, it’s by no means a vital perk, but it can provide a small boost for newer players unfamiliar with Call of Duty‘s maps.
Death Perception allows players to see the outlines of zombies through walls and will provide HUD indicators of approaching enemies. It’s a helpful—if not somewhat superfluous—perk, but most Black Ops 4 players wouldn’t sacrifice one of their four perk slots for it.
14 Blaze Phase
Tumblr media
Released alongside Tag Der Toten, the final DLC offering developed for Black Ops 4, Blaze Phase is something of a combination between PhD Flopper and Trail Blazers from Infinite Warfare‘s zombies mode. After crouching for a period with the perk active, the player will be catapulted forward after standing up, knocking over anything in their way.
The modifier extends the distance covered when the perk is used, and, while it can be useful in desperate situations, in the eyes of many zombies fans, Blaze Phase just doesn’t cut it.
13 PhD Slider
Tumblr media
Touted as a return of sorts of the fan-favorite perk PhD Flopper perk which initially debuted in the original Black Ops, PhD Slider is a reworked perk meant to act similarly to the original while accommodating the game’s new style of movement.
Players with PhD Slider can build an explosive charge by sliding several times and then detonate it by sliding into a zombie. When in the modifier slot, the perk increases slide distance, explosive power, and provides immunity to traps while sliding. Though somewhat useful, the fact that it must be charged up before use makes it a relatively underwhelming take on the original.
12 Victorious Tortise
Tumblr media
At a glance, Black Ops 4‘s Victorious Tortise perk doesn’t seem all that useful; it causes a player’s shield to absorb all damage when wielded and to explode when broken. Though it can come in handy when cornered, it isn’t all that useful most of the time.
However, the modifier allows players to knock down boss zombies with the shield, and this can be indispensable in tough situations. Though it doesn’t happen all that often, and, of course, it requires a shield, Victorious Tortise’s modifier can allow players to escape from otherwise inescapable situations.
11 Blood Wolf Bite
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the most creative perks ever introduced to the zombies mode, when players do a significant amount of damage to a pack of zombies, a wolf familiar will spawn and attack enemies for a period of 45 seconds. It’s an interesting concept, and it certainly looks cool, but it’s not quite as practical as some of Black Ops 4’s other perk offerings.
When placed in the modifier slot, zombies killed by the player’s wolf will drop unique power-ups. Yet, those looking to make impromptu allies are better off applying the Brain Rot weapon modifier to a pack-a-punched gun.
10 Mule Kick
Tumblr media
First introduced on Moon, the original Black Ops‘ final all-new DLC map, Mule Kick was something of a controversial inclusion as, helpful though it could be, it asked players to risk quite a bit, allowing them to purchase and upgrade weapons they could potentially permanently lose. Plus, swapping through three separate guns could be a bit cumbersome.
RELATED: 10 Best Zombies Maps In The Call Of Duty Black Ops Series, Ranked
However, while it still isn’t perfect, Mule Kick’s modifier in Black Ops 4 makes it much more useful, as downed players with this perk in their modifier slot receive their lost weapon when they re-buy the perk. That said, it’s far from Black Ops 4‘s most conventional perk offering.
9 Electric Burst
Tumblr media
Essentially a modified version of Electric Cherry which was introduced in Black Ops II’s fan-favorite Mob of the Dead DLC map, Electric burst sends out a shockwave when players reload, stunning zombies and inflecting varying levels of damage based on how empty the weapon’s magazine was.
The modifier applies this effect to the player’s melee weapon; energy is stored with each reload and can be unleashed with a melee attack which can chain to other zombies. Though a nice passive effect, Electric Burst isn’t quite as beloved as the perk on which it was based.
8 Ethereal Razor
Tumblr media
Introduced after the game’s launch, Ethereal Razor is another situational perk. It allows players to use melee attacks to gain health, though this is a fairly risky prospect. However, this perk is doubly useful when used in the modifier slot, as it causes all melee attacks to be lethal to standard zombies, and it increases the damage of melee attacks against larger targets.
For savvy players, Ethereal Razor can be a get-out-of-jail-free card, but, without the modifier applied, it isn’t nearly as useful as most of the game’s other perks.
7 Timeslip
Tumblr media
One of the many all-new perks introduced to Black Ops 4, Timeslip reduced the cooldown rate of equipment and made the box and pack-a-punch machines operate more quickly. When paired with Wraithfire, Black Ops 4‘s most prominent piece of extraneous weaponry, timeslip can be undoubtedly effective.
Plus, when used in the modifier slot, Timeslip increases the rate at which special weapons charge, which can, in some scenarios, be lifesaving. Of course, useful as it can be, more traditional zombie players who dislike relying on things like special weapons and overpowered equipment may not be inclined to add it to their perk repertoire.
6 Stone Cold Stronghold
Tumblr media
A camper’s dream, this would have been an amazing perk for those who cut their teeth huddled at the end of Der Riese’s infamous catwalk in the World at War days. While most Black Ops 4 zombies maps aren’t as conducive to that playstyle, Stone Cold Stronghold is still undeniably useful.
When standing still, players with this perk active generate a small circle around them and will receive a damage boost for as long as they remain inside of it. A group of four players using this perk together could be nigh on unstoppable save for the issues presented by ever-depleting ammunition reserves.
5 Quick Revive
Tumblr media
One of the four core zombies perks first introduced in Zombie Verruckt, the first-ever zombies DLC map in Call of Duty: World At War, Quick Revive initially hastened the process of reviving a downed teammate and was completely useless while playing solo.
The perk was buffed considerably for Black Ops 4, shortening the time it took to revive downed players, but also shortening the time it took to regenerate health after losing it. When the perk’s modifier is applied, reviving a downed player grants both players full health and increased movement speed for a short time, which is often vital in near-death situations.
4 Winter’s Wail
Tumblr media
A re-work of Widow’s Wine from Black Ops III, Winter’s Wail causes players to unleash a defensive frost aura when hit, freezing and slowing nearby zombies for a short amount of time. When used in the modifier slot, players can carry an additional charge—up to three total—and will be able to discharge frost for several seconds, often providing an easy escape from potentially sticky situations.
Winter’s Wail may not be as revered as the perk on which it was based, but it’s still an incredibly useful buff, particularly on close-quarters maps like Alpha Omega or Voyage of Despair.
3 Bandolier Bandit
Tumblr media
According to the Call of Duty Wiki, Bandolier Bandit is actually a version of Amm-o-Matic, a cut perk that was originally slated to debut in World At War‘s Der Riese map. On its own, Bandolier Bandit simply increases the amount of ammo players can carry in each weapon. However, when used in the modifier slot, players can actually slowly regenerate ammo in weapons that aren’t currently in use.
RELATED: Every 7th Generation Call Of Duty Game, Ranked According To Metacritic
Though the effects of this perk aren’t immediately obvious, it can be incredibly useful for players opting to use weapons that don’t offer much ammunition in reserve, and it can make some unconventional loadouts much more viable.
2 Stamin-Up
Tumblr media
When Stamin-Up first debuted in Ascension, the first DLC zombies map attached to the original Black Ops, it was a bit underrated; though an increased movement speed and a longer sprint duration helped, it wasn’t quite as helpful as all-time favorites like Juggernog, Speed Cola, or PhD Flopper. However, as Call of Duty zombies maps grew to be larger, Stamin-Up’s usefulness became more apparent.
In Black Ops 4, Stamin-Up is almost essential on some of the title’s sprawling maps, and the perk modifier, which allows players to sprint indefinitely, is invaluable when making a quick escape from some of the mode’s many boss zombies.
1 Dying Wish
Tumblr media
The defacto replacement for the essential Jugger-Nog perk in Call of Duty Black Ops 4, Dying Wish allows players to survive a fatal hit and enter a berserk mode for a few seconds, allowing them an opportunity to escape an otherwise deadly situation. When placed in the modifier slot, players will recover all of their health after leaving the berserk state, an added boon to an already essential perk.
Dying Wish is beyond helpful and affords the player a safety net that was once provided by the mode’s flagship perk. That said, it takes quite a bit of time to recharge after use, which drastically handicaps its usefulness.

FRIDAY NIGHT BITES   :   stefan joins the football team   ,   &   kennedy learns damon is now dating caroline.   although not upset at the news   ,   kennedy is disappointed at this development after all her unusual encounters with him.   caroline forces elena   &   kennedy to try out for the cheer team   ,   even though kennedy insists that even if she makes the team she won’t be cheering because she’s too busy with her other curriculars.   meanwhile   ,   bonnie has a premonition about the numbers 8   ,   14   ,   22.
FAMILY TIES   :   the founder’s party is on the way   ,   &   kennedy is overcome with a strong sense of déjà vu   (   especially when her   &    damon dance   )   ,   as well as the strangest sense of foreboding.   this is due to the fact that every incarnation before her has died on september 25 when they were eighteen   ,   although she is unaware of this of course.   while kennedy   &   damon dance   ,   stefan poisons caroline’s drink with vervain   ,   later allowing to chain damon up.
YOU’RE UNDEAD TO ME   :   stefan has damon locked in the cellar.   kennedy is no longer stuck with a sense of foreboding   ,   but replacing it is a crazy nightmare.   she thinks it nothing more than an odd vivid dream.   the school’s athletic department is having a car wash   ,   &   kennedy has to help.   damon tricks caroline into freeing him   ,   &   then kills zach.   bonnie experiments with her powers   ,   &   elena figures out stefan is a vampire.
LOST GIRLS   :   kennedy dreams get vivider   &   darker   ,   leaving her freaked out   &   on the edge throughout the day.   she begins to notice similarities between certain characters in her dreams to people in her life   ———   elena / katherine   ,   damon   ,   stefan   ,   etc.   she chalks iup up to them being dreams   &   her mind using her experiences   &   memories to create them.   stefan explains his past to elena.   damon keeps vicki at the boarding house with him.   vicki becomes a vampire   &   kills logan fell.  kennedy begins to think about her dreams   &   the town events   &   begins to investigate at the library late at night.
HAUNTED   :   kennedy’s dreams become stronger   &   more prominent   ,   even violent   &   creepy.   during the day   ,   she keeps seeing bits of them.   bonnie gets slightly worried but doesn't know who to tell.   vicki adjusts to being a vampire   &   avoids oliver.   the high school’s halloween party is underway.   kennedy skips out   &   decides to go to the library instead.   stefan is forced to kill vicki   ,   &   damon compels jeremy’s pain away.   caroline gives bonnie the crystal.   when kennedy goes to bed that night   ,   she wakes up screaming   (   having dreamt of eliza’s death   ).
162 CANDLES   :   stefan’s old friend lexi arrives in town   ,   &   caroline decides to throw a party at the grill.   kennedy continues to have odd dreams   &   begins investigating the numerous amount of animal attacks near mystic falls during her free time.   along with her weird dreams   ,   kennedy’s drawings begin showing signs of premonitions   &   past memories   (   some of the things she draws include damon’s crow   ,   the meadow   ,   &   lexi’s face   ).   she bumps into damon at the party   ,   &   also briefly ends up talking to lexi.   but when she  brushes against lexi’s shoulder   ,   she again has this awful sense of foreboding    ,   but when the police show up   &   guard the front door   ,   kennedy grows more suspicious of the events in town.
HISTORY REPEATING   :   kennedy   &   the new history teacher bump heads as she tries to maintain her student aid position.   the girls have a sleepover at elena’s   &   hold a séance   ,   where bonnie gets   “   possessed   ”   by emily bennett.   while caroline doesn’t buy into it   ,   kennedy is freaked out by hearing the ghost haunting bonnie is named emily   ,   someone who has appeared in her dreams.   elena insists there’s nothing wrong   &   runs off to find bonnie   ,   leaving kennedy to go home worried.
THE TURNING POINT   :   logan fell returns to town in time for the career fair at the high school.   kennedy   ,   who still hasn’t figured out her odd dreams but is pretty convinced the salvatores are vampires from her research   (   but not convinced enough to confront them with this information   )   ,   only stays for about 30 minutes before changing into her track gear from her locker   &   going on a late night jog in the woods.   logan attacks her on his way to meet damon.   some other vampire   (   later discovered to be katherine   )   saves her before the two of them run off.   ric kills logan   ,   &   damon finds kennedy bleeding in the forest before getting a call from the sheriff that logan is dead.   damon heals her   ,   learns she has already figured out the whole vampire nonsense going on in town   ,   &   decides to take her on his roadtrip to gerogia.   on their way out of town   ,   the two find elena’s car crashed on the road.
BLOODLINES   :   the chapter begins with kennedy    &   damon finding elena’s car crashed on the road    &   a man in a hooded jacket running away from it.   damon helps her out of the car   ,   &   the three being their journey to atlanta   ,   with elena passed out in the backseat.   kennedy plays twenty questions with damon about vampires and the supernatural before elena wakes up   ,   confused   &   curious about how kennedy got involved in this.   they end up at a bar   ,    meeting a witch named bree.   bree eyes kennedy curiously but doesn’t say anything to her.   kennedy hangs with damon at the bar but doesn’t drink because she doesn’t trust him yet.   she helps elena plead for his life   ,   however   ,    from lexi’s boyfriend.   on the way back   ,   kennedy asks damon if it’s possible to remember a life you’ve never had   ,   &   damon answers maybe.
UNPLEASANTVILLE   :   kennedy begins keeping secrets from her parents about where she is   &   who she’s hanging out with as she begins to spend more time with the salvatores.   damon enlists her help with finding his father’s journal   ,   &   elena gives her a vervain filled bracelet for safety.   kennedy goes to the dance with dressed as sandy from the end of grease   &   dances with damon.   she makes small talk with ric at the dance   &   tells damon that ric seems like a regular guy.   damon scoffs   &   remarks   “   so does every other vampire   ”.
CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED   :   the search / race for johnathan gilbert’s journal begins   ,   &   while stefan   &   elena are pretending to help find the journal for damon   ,   they decide to leave kennedy out of the scheme because of her new   “   friendship   ”   with damon.   kennedy looks in the library because of the small collection of founder’s journals they have.   there   ,   she stumbles upon her own face in eliza gilbert’s journal   &   goes to find answers from sheila bennett.   sheila explains about reincarnation   &   her friendship with evelyn warren   (   the previous incarnation   ).   she gives kennedy evelyn’s ring.   meanwhile   ,   damon catches elena   &   stefan in their lie   &   takes the journal but not before asking if kennedy knew what the duo had been up to.   anna kidnaps elena   &   bonnie.
FOOL ME ONCE   :   elena   &   bonnie have been kidnapped by anna   &   ben.   kennedy   ,   who has been hanging out   &   studying as much as she can about evelyn   &   eliza   (   &   avoiding damon   )   from grams   ,   &   grams agree to help stefan find elena   &   bonnie.   bonnie   &   grams open the tomb.   while stefan goes to get his arsonist tools   ,   damon uses kennedy as leverage to get in the tomb.   ben threatens to harm jeremy   ,   &   anna uses it as her opportunity to get her mother   ,   taking elena into the tomb with her.   bonnie asks why grams didn’t stop them   ,   &   she answers that no vampire is getting out.   stefan comes back   &   hears that elena   &   kennedy are in there   &   rushes to save them   ,   but sheila stops him.   pearl bites elena   ,   &   elena runs off.   damon learns katherine is no longer in the tomb.   stefan   &   kennedy convince him to get out   ,   &   everyone   (   elena   ,   kennedy   ,   damon   ,   stefan   ,   pearl   ,   &   anna   )   make it out of the tomb.   grams passes away.   a vampire from the tomb escapes.
A FEW GOOD MEN   :   the group deals with the aftermath of opening the tomb.    the vampire who escaped the tomb   ,   later revealed to be harper   ,   attacks a hiker   &   steals his clothes.   elena leanrs more information about her birth mother   ,   &   jenna confronts alaric about the possible connection between elena’s isobel    &    his wife isobel.   meanwhile   ,   damon deals with katherine’s betrayal by partying at the boarding house.   kennedy is concerned about his behavior   &   takes a break from researching reincarnation to check on him.   sheriff forbes asks damon to participate in the bachelor auction   ,   &   damon asks her about alaric.   damon reveals he knew isobel during the auction.   kennedy stops by at the boarding house again that night to talk to damon about his actions in the bar   ,   but alaric comes over   &   confronts damon.   damon kills alaric   ,   but he is magically revived somehow   ,   leaving damon   &   kennedy confused.   elena receives a warning from isobel   ———   stay away.
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORDHOOD   :   when anna   &   pearl visit damon at the the boarding house   ,   he learns that all of the tomb vampires have been released.   meanwhile   ,   kennedy   &   alaric debrief his altercation with damon   &   his knowledge of the supernatural over history work   &   cheeseburgers at the grill.   also at the grill   ,   elena   ,   stefan   ,   caroline   ,   &   matt stumble through an awkward double date   ,   during which frederick   ,   a vampire from the tomb   ,   mistakes elena for katherine.   the four return to the boarding house   &   continue their date.    back at the grill   ,   damon   ,   kelly   ,   &   jenna enjoy drinks   ,   but jenna leaves for home when things heat up between damon   &   kelly.   kennedy watches with mild disgust   &   texts damon a reminder that kelly is matt’s mom to which he responds with a shrug in her direction.   jenna returns home in time to interrupt anna feeding from jeremy’s hand   ,    proving to the youngest gilbert that the girl is a vampire.   damon   &   kelly end up at the boarding house   ,   but kelly leaves after seeing her son there.   matt leaves as well   ,   &   elena drives caroline home.   frederick   &   bethanne attack the salvatore brothers   ,   &   bethanne is killed.   alaric drops kennedy back off at her house.   as kennedy checks the mail   ,   frederick is seen walking past her house   &   does a double-take upon seeing her.    kennedy goes inside when bryan calls her from the front porch.   frederick returns to miss gibbons house.
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN   :   ***   more to be added.

MISS MYSTIC FALLS   :   ***   more to be added.
BLOOD BROTHERS   :   ***   more to be added.
ISOBEL   :   ***   more to be added.
FOUNDER’S DAY   :   ***   more to be added.
SEASON ONE SPECIFIC HEADCANONS.
damon was going to honor eliza’s death   (   1 x 04   ,   the day after the founder’s ball   )   by planting flowers in the meadow where they used to stargaze or escape giuseppe   &   johnathan   &   then go sit by the lake    &   just talk about his life to the air   ,   but he doesn’t get the chance to because stefan put vervain in caroline’s drink   ,   effectively poisoning damon so stefan can lock him up in the salvatore cellar.
kennedy   &   damon play   “   20 questions   ”   about vampires   &   the supernatural on their way to georgia.   on the way back to virginia   ,   kennedy asks about whther it’s possible to remember something she’s never lived   ,   &   it gets awkwardly quiet after damon answers   “   maybe   ”.
kennedy is captured by the tomb vampires with stefan because of her resemblance to eliza gilbert.   there she has her first encounter with her own magic but dismisses it because of her blood loss.
from episodes 4-10   ,   kennedy begins to feel left out  &   even isolated as her dreams continue to bug her   &   her friends get absorbed in their own problems.
kenendy’s senior year is very busy.   kennedy is the track team captain.   she is tanner’s student assistant / student aid   (   &   later alaric’s as well after heavy convincing   ).   she works at the library   ,   tutoring elementary   &   middle school students   &   working on the online catalogue.   she helps out at church.   she shadows her dad at the hospital.   caroline even forces her to try out for the cheer team   ,   even though kennedy insists she won’t join.   basically   ,   despite kennedy noticing a lot of the oddities happening in town   ,   she doesn’t piece them all together immediately because she’s so busy   &   preoccupied.
kennedy meets damon on her way to work in 1 x 01   &   from then on has continuous mysterious encounters with him throughout the season   (   namely episodes 1-4   ,   episode 7-10   ).   he’s familiar yet allusive   &   friendly.   kennedy’s unsure whether to turst him.   some of the counters include damon looking for the vampire chronicles by anne rice in the library   ,   kennedy   &   damon dacnig together at the founder’s ball   (   1 x 04   )   ,   etc   ...
kennedy begins to have strange dreams about her past lives   ,   as well as dreams involving premonitions.   at first   ,   she dismisses the dreams as nightmares   &   trying to make sense of all the new things that have happened this school year   ,   but she begins to believe there might be something more to it.
(   1 x 10   )   kennedy gets attacked by logan fell   &   unbeknownst to her   ,   she is saved by katherine pierce.   damon finds kennedy stumbling in the woods   ,   bleeding   &   heals her.
kennedy helps the gang with research on   (   1   )   getting katherine out of the tomb   ,   (   2   )   isobel   ,   (   3   )   her own reincarnation mess   (   with bonnie   &   sheila   )   ,   (   4   )   johnathan gilbert   ,   among other things as the seasons go on.
kennedy hides what she knows from her dad   &   begins to see alaric as an uncle / elder brother figure by the end of the season.
kennedy doesn’t have a car   &   often walks or rides with elena   &   bonnie.   when it’s raining   ,   she normally either takes the car   &   picks up oliver   ,   or carpools with her mother earlier in the morning.
the first time kennedy dreams of dying   ,   she wakes up screaming for the first time in years.
kennedy is damon’s leverage into the tomb.   kennedy agrees less reluctantly than one would imagine since she has started seeing damon as more of a friend than foe   ,   especially since reading eliza’s journals   &   knowing who he was to eliza.   she left out some of eliza’s feelings towards damon   ,   &   just told him eliza considered him her best friend.   sheila   &   bonnie are not okay with this   &   neither is elena or stefan   ,   but at this point   ,   stefan believes kennedy won’t be hurt by damon’s hands.
kennedy’s curfew is earlier than the rest of the gang   &   getting home in time seems to be very important to her dad.   this becomes an increasing problem as kennedy becomes aware of the supernatrual world around her   &   remains unaware of her own family’s supernatural secrets   (   i.e.   bryan being a witch   ).
some of kennedy’s premonitions   &   memory recollections appear in her sketches.   she’s seen drawing damon’s crow at one point   ,   only with fangs.   she’s also seen drawing the meadow eliza frequented.
(   1 x 12   )   kennedy dances with damon at the 50s decades dance.   she is dressed up as sandy from grease   ,   resembling a look evelyn wore while dancing j.d.
bree had seen photos of evelyn from her mother / bree’s mother knew evelyn   &   her aunt.   “   you’re more cookie-cutter than i imagined.   ”   ...   “   excuse me   ?   ”
at the founder’s day parade   ,   kennedy is helping run the library’s booth   ,   promoting it’s collection of founder’s archives   &   civil war era novels.   damon pesters her as stefan tries to talk to him about elena.   elena arrives in costume   &   the brother do a take-back at her resemblance to katherine.   kennedy notices their staring   &   asks damon a moment later if that’s what katherine looked like back in 1864.   he nods before shrugging   ,   saying the dress reminded him more of eliza’s style   ,   but yes.
at the end of 1 x 22   ,   damon walks kennedy back to her house   ,   where she tells him she’s glad he’s okay   &   not dead.   he makes a quip back that technically he is dead   &   has been for 145 years.   kennedy just rolls her eyes   &   kisses his cheek.   she tells him goodnight before walking inside damon is left standing   there   ,   momentarily stunned before he leaves to elena’s house where he has the talk with jeremy   &   encounter with katherine.
kennedy’s personality outside of school is full of bad puns   ,   enjoying parties   ,   etc.   she is both innocent while being sneaky troublemaker.   she sneaks out on occasion   &   goes out with oliver   &   vicki to college parties   ,   but as far as her parents are aware   ,   she always follows the rules.
stefan   &   kennedy’s interactions are very awkward in early season one because he keeps seeing eliza   ,   who was only a few months his elder back in the day   ,   when they talk.   her mannerisms tend to mock eliza’s a lot.
sheila bennet is constantly eluding to evelyn during her season one appearance   ,   &   when kennedy finds out about her history with reincarnation   ,   she wonders how long sheila’s known she was evelyn.
stefan tries to stop damon   &   kennedy fromm hanigng out because he’s not sure what damon’s intentions are.
again   ,   kennedy’s very on edge before being attacked by logan.   she feels like she is going to die very often because of her dreams.   it’s almost as if her body realizes she’s past her original due date   ,   having survived longer than any other incarnation after living past 1 x 04.

SEC to Grill Kik Head of Operations Next Week
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will continue its investigation of the Kik startup, inviting the company’s head of operations and technical adviser, Tanner Philips, to sit for a deposition on January 29. SEC Requires More Data on Kik Business Prior to 2018 After the initial exploratory stages of the SEC lawsuit against Kik, the US agency says that a new deposition are needed to reveal more details of the company’s business prior to 2018. The deposition was approved by Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein despite the objection of Kik for this late-stage request. The hearings are expected this January 29, to satisfy the SEC’s demand for more fact-finding on the company’s business, intentions and achievements. The SEC also wants to shed light on a new Kik-affiliated company, Code Inc. Livingston has been known for vehemently claiming the SEC does not have jurisdiction over the KIN digital coin. “We hope this case will make it clear that the securities laws should not be applied to a currency used by millions of people in dozens of apps,” Livingston said on June 4, in response to the SEC lawsuit. The asset, pronounced dead after no real interest, saw its value drop almost to zero after Kik announced it would close its flagship app. Now, KIN is in a limbo, thinly traded on CoinTiger and Fatbtc. The coin’s rock-bottom price of $0.000006 does, however, allow for some short-term speculation. The current prices are more than 20 times lower in comparison to the 2017 price at the ICO. Kik performed one of the biggest token sales during one of the hottest times of the bull market in 2017. The asset promised a lot, and managed to raise above $70 million from around 10,000 investors worldwide. The token sale however, caught the eye of the SEC, and it wasn’t long before the regulator accused the project of running an unregistered security offering. Kik to Explain New Owner, Future Plans to Revive KIN Token The chief claims against Kik was that its chat app had fallen on hard times. The ICO was a pivot to boost the failing business model. But adding KIN did not manage to boost the ecosystem. Despite the claims of Kik to have found a new coding team and a new future, the lawsuit was not dismissed. We have a new owner! We wrote a blog post all about it here: https://t.co/F1sQYxJyQn https://t.co/Co3dN4TOay — Kik (@Kik) October 18, 2019 For now, Kik has been silent, with no new developments. The token still somehow manages 1.4 million transactions per day, which cannot be explained by organic demand. After Medialab took over the building of the Kik chat app, the company has offered to buy back remaining KIN tokens on the open market, and find a new use case for them. KIN has also moved to a new blockchain, and is no longer an Ethereum-based token. What do you think about Kik’s legal troubles? Share your thoughts in the comments section below! Mark Ruffalo Stands Up for Acting
Schooled by Stella Adler in his profession’s highest ideals, he’ll get another chance to live up to them in Arthur Miller’s ‘The Price.’
BY
ROB WEINERT-KENDT
Actor Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right, Spotlight, The Avengers) hasn’t been onstage since 2006’sAwake and Sing on Broadway, but he got his start in small L.A. theatres and had his breakthrough in 1996 with Kenneth Lonergan’s Off-Broadway classic This Is Our Youth. He’ll return to Broadway in March for a revival of Arthur Miller’s The Price at Roundabout Theatre Company.
I spoke to him by phone on the morning of President Trump’s inauguration. The night before he had appeared in another of his prominent roles, as an activist, at a protest rally in front of Trump Tower.
I somehow missed Awake and Sing, which means the last time I saw you onstage was in Justin Tanner’s Still Life With Vacuum Salesman back in 1994, at the Cast Theatre in Hollywood. Did I miss any other stage work since Awake and Sing? No, I haven’t really done any. I’ve done some readings and things like that, but not really back onstage. It’s been a long time.
And there wasn’t a lot before Awake and Sing, was there? I sort of had the surprise of having a film career, which I wasn’t really expecting, you know? But before Awake and Sing, The Moment When was the last thing I’d done—a James Lapine play at Playwrights Horizons.
I think I once heard you tell this story, and I’ve retold it many times, so I want to reconfirm it. When you were in This Is Our Youth in New York, you had L.A. casting directors coming to see you and saying, “You’re amazing, where have you been?” And you’re like, “I’ve been acting down the street from you. I’ve been trying to get you to see my shows!” That’s exactly what happened. They were like, “Where did you come from?” I was like, “What are you talking about? I’ve been right under your nose for the past 10 years doing exactly the same thing here in L.A.” But no one goes to the theatre in L.A. I realized that if you had a long list of L.A. theatre credits on your résumé, they immediately thought you were a loser. I started taking theatre credits off of my résumé. But I have to say, I’ve seen a lot of New York theatre and I’ve seen a lot of L.A. theatre. And L.A. theatre is just as vibrant and, in a lot of ways, more beautiful because it isn’t so corporatized. It’s more independent and there’s a lot more freedom.
I don’t know if you’ve followed the whole L.A. 99-Seat controversy that’s been going on in the past few years, about whether Equity actors should be allowed to work without a contract under a certain level. I don’t want to get too deep into that controversy with you, but I did see your early work on the old 99-seat plan. I mean, actors should be paid, but, you know… I mean, I’m doing this play here; I’m taking a major pay cut to do this, you know. So it’s all relative. And there’s probably an argument to be made that, you know, yes, we could do better, but I also want to do this. And maybe theatre is like a civil act—a generous social act.
Tumblr media
(The cast of “Avenue A” 1992 - Photo by Ed Krieger)
There was an early version of This Is Our Youth at the Met in Los Angeles, if I remember correctly. Is that how you got involved with that play? Yeah, there was the one-act version at the Met called Betrayed by Everyone. I wasn’t even cast. I was only doing a reading for it. They were looking for a star, and I was asked to do a reading of it with a casting associate—we were just reading it for him to hear it out loud. They made it very clear that there was no way we would possibly get a part in it, that it was just a reading. But we did it so well that he cast us.
I think Oliver Platt used to be a reader in auditions, and that was how he got his break too. Oh really? That’s cool. That’s one of the backdoor ways to get a part.
So tell me about the part you’re playing in The Price, Victor. Victor Franz is a cop who’s turning 50, and he’s made all these decisions about his life and beyond and now, you know, he’s taking a look at whether he’s made the best decisions. And he’s having a reunion with his brother; they’re about to tear their old family home down, and they’ve got all the family furniture in there that they’ve got to get rid of. And they haven’t spoken in 16 years.
The only time I’ve seen the play was at A Noise Within in L.A., a really good production, about a dozen years ago. At the time I think I called it “Chekhovian.” It’s got some of the usual Arthur Miller themes, fathers and sons and all, but it’s a very slow burn. Yeah. It’s very mature. It’s much more nuanced than some of his other plays. It’s really political, but the politics are buried so deeply in the people. Sometimes, you know, Arthur’s ideas are so big politically that they–you know, wow. This doesn’t do that.
Characters like this bring a lot of backstory into the room. As an actor what do you do to prepare for that? It’s a lot of imagination work, a lot of daydreaming, really. Stella Adler had a beautiful saying. She said, “Once something passes through your imagination, it’s real.” That can be a really intense, hard thing. There’s some writing that goes on, and I do some other kinds of quirky things. But a lot of it, honestly, is daydreaming about the life of the character based on the play.
It’s not about excavating your own relationship with your father or family, or anything like that? Well, that’s not the end-all. You know, we understand the nature of certain things because of our experience, and I think you’d be foolish to somehow divorce yourself from yourself. But then also you have to be careful not to pull the play down into your life, but lift yourself up into the greatness of the play. That was another thing Stella taught us. Yeah, you’re reflecting on your own experience; that really informs it. But at the end of the day, that’s small, and won’t sustain you throughout the run. So there’s a fine line to walk there.
I want to just ask you about politics and activism. Is that kind of like doing theatre—do you have to set aside time for that from your film career— You mean my day job?
Or does it kind of grow out of it naturally? That’s another thing we were taught—to be really socially active and involved, and politically astute. Stella came out of the Yiddish theatre, and that was the Jewish intellectual movement that led to the Group Theatre, and the whole workers movement was kicked off by Waiting for Lefty. That was part of my teaching, so it’s sort of seamless, even if a lot of them did it their work. The activism has been more direct for me, and the work has, sadly, taken a bit of a backseat. But this is a shift for me to get back to it—to get back to my theatre roots, and theatre that has a political aspect to it. This hits all those boxes for me. The political, the social, and the artistic working together is really powerful, but I think is hard to do these days.
So I think people would want me to ask Mark Ruffalo, celebrity protester at Trump Tower, about politics more specifically. Like: What are we going to do? My wife said I should ask you, “Where’s the bunker?” The bunker’s in the streets. When you’re afraid, hit the streets. It’s not an accident that enshrined in our First Amendment is the right to assembly and to address grievances and freedom of speech—they’re all there. That’s the First Amendment. That might be all that’s left to us at this point, but there’s so much power there.
At the rally last night, there were 25,000 people. That’s how we know we’re not alone. I think the more cynical forces in the world want us to believe we’re alone, want us to believe somehow that our votes didn’t matter, that the progress that we made in this country in the last 50, 60 years, was all for naught—that our decency as Americans and the values that we hold dear to us from the beginning of our Constitution are somehow no longer valid. So the way we fight against that is to come together and remind each other that, yes, we do have values. America isn’t just about money, it isn’t just about businesses—it’s about people. And we’re not a fearful country, we’re actually a courageous country. We don’t give up our principles based on fear or making each other the bogeyman, and we never have. When we have in the past, we’ve always righted it.
You’ve got three kids, right? Are they into the arts or performing? Is that something you encourage or are you like, “No, stay away?” I’m more neutral. I’m waiting for them to find their own way. They’ve been around it and they’ve been exposed to it; they dabble in it. But I’m also not pushing introducing them to it. But certainly, if they wanted to do it, they have a nice headstart for it.
I know the cliché that even actors who are successful are worried about their kids going into the business. It’s not an easy life, there are no guarantees. No, but when I look at it, and I look at my friends, it’s been a good life. I’ve learned to really work hard. I’ve learned really beautiful lessons. I’ve been invited in places that no one would ever be invited to with so much openness and love.
I tell you, I have parents come to me, “My son or daughter wants to be an actress. What am I going to do?” You know, they can end up a lot worse. There’s a lot worse places these days they could end up that do harm in ways that you would never imagine. Ours is a much maligned industry, but when you look at it, it’s probably one of the most decent, upright industries in the world. We’re not screwing anybody, harming people, and nepotism doesn’t really play. It is really a meritocracy in the way it works. No one’s doing anyone any favors.
Wait, are you talking about film or theatre here? I’m talking about both. I mean, even in film there’s only so long you can get away with not being good. You have to bring something to the table. And, you know, we’re not killing people. I’m always amazed by how maligned we are. But if you want to add up our scumbags against the scumbags in other industries, I have a feeling we have a much lower percentage.
Tumblr media
Do you worry that you get typecast in angry roles? I’m not just talking about the Hulk. Anger has been a signature of some of your best roles, and Victor in The Price has a big tell-off speech. Is that a slot you fit naturally into? It’s seasonal. You do something well, and then there’s a slew of those kinds of parts. You’re always sort of trying to stay ahead of the curve a little bit, you know, while at the same time exploring other things. Righteousness and justice—those are things that I’m interested in these days, and so I’m riding that wave a little bit. It will jump to something else when I feel like it.
But, you know, for a long time I did romantic comedy. I did the ne’er-do-well slacker. And then I’d get like 10 offers for, “He’s a brother, he’s kind of like a lumberjack, a slacker.” And now it’s like: “He’s living a double life, and part of him has all this rage and the other part is good.”
Actually, in the first thing I saw you in, Still Life With Vacuum Salesman, you were doing sort of a riff on Stanley Kowalski. I remember there being a lot of “young Brando” talk when you started. Do you still hear that? Not really, no; somewhere I went off the tracks. The jig is up. They saw through my ruse.
So maybe the anger thing is typecasting. But what do you do to blow off steam in real life? What’s your guilty pleasure? I started taking the kids to a ceramics class on the weekend. They eventually just stopped going and I’m the only one going now. I sort of beg them to come with me so I don’t feel like I’m in a ceramics class. I tell people, “Oh, you know, I had to take the kids to the ceramic class.” But it’s just me. So I guess I like doing ceramics.
So we’re talking a potter’s wheel and everything? There’s a potter’s wheel, and then there’s like hand-building stuff and sculpture. It’s just a way to check out in an active way. You have to be really present, especially on the wheel. Just trying to center the goddamn thing is an act of Zen fortitude.
You like to make stuff with your hands, Mark? Is that what you like to do? I like to make stuff with my hands, bruh. I’ve always been handy, and I have a nice little wood shop; I have a welder. I like to make furniture or fix things. We were on a farm for many years, and there’s a lot of stuff that needs to be repaired on a farm. So I like to garden, and I guess I’m into ceramics a little bit now. And, if I can, I like to surf. I’ve always been a surfer.
Can you think of what your first theatrical memory—the first time you were like, “This is it for me”? I always wanted to act, from every early on. And it was something that me and my brother and sisters and my cousins would do, put on little shows and do these broad characters. So I secretly wanted to be this actor, but then I was like, that’s foolish, I’m a jock, I’m a surfer—they don’t do that kind of thing. I’m not a musical theatre-type person, but I remember I used to see them; I’d see the school play and I was really envious. Like, “God, I wish I could do that.” I was a wrestler. But in my junior year, I did a drama class. I was saying it was just for an easy A, but I was really just thrilled to be in there. And I loved it so much that I didn’t go out for wrestling, and all the people that I knew, all my team members and my coaches, were like, “What are you doing?”
I did one play, the school play. What happened was the kid broke his arm and they needed somebody, so they put me in the part. And I loved it so much, after the first night, I was like, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Do you remember the play and the part? I think it was called The Runaways. It was this straight play of all these foster kids living in this home, and I was a cop, a detective. It was my first cop role of what would end up being many cop roles in a career.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Grand Tour of Europe was an immersive journey across the continent undertaken by Britain's elites. It was seen as an opportunity to extend one's education by absorbing the best of Europe's art, culture and fine food, and it could entail a two- or three-year commitment to exploring the wonders of Italy, France, Austria and Germany. Whatever the duration, it was also about living the good life, taking your time and, in-between, meeting local nobility, sketching the sights and enjoying sumptuous feasts.
The tradition has vanished in its lavish original form, but Traveller is going to revive it, albeit with some tweaks. Few of us, after all, have the option to take a year or two out like the Grand Tourists of the past but then again, modern transportation allows us cover much more ground in much less time.
Our proposed Grand Tour for the modern age is designed to last about a month: long enough to feel indulgent, but short enough to ensureyou still have a life to return to back home. Our itinerary is also quite different. The Grand Tour of centuries past was designed to showcase eye-opening destinations rich in culture and history. It included places such as Paris, Venice and Rome, which these days are among the most-visited places on the planet. We have chosen a new route through Europe that takes us to dramatically different destinations, from one of Spain's most splendid Moorish cities through Russia's grandest metropolis and deep into Eastern Europe. And, instead of travelling by carriage, our tour relies on flights (although some stretches, such as Helsinki to St Petersburg, can be done by train).
Some of these cities, such as Prague, are popular destinations; others, such as Sofia, remain under-the-radar. Each one embodies a different aspect of European history and culture, and each one has plenty of wonders to admire. Most of these cities, it should be noted, deserve a longer stay than the few days we have allotted. Taken together as an itinerary, however, we hope they offer a new perspective on Europe's many glories.
DAYS 1 TO 3
VALLETTA, MALTA
Europe is crammed with cities founded by kings and queens. Cities founded by warrior monks? Not so much. In fact, Valletta is the only one we can think of. The Knights of St John, like their more famous brethren, the Knights Templar, were originally formed in the 11th century to fight in the Crusades; more than 400 years later they were still going strong. Chased from their base in Rhodes in 1530 by the Ottomans, the Knights moved to Malta and promptly built a grand city to prove their glory was undiminished.
WHAT TO DO
Valletta's steeply-sloping streets, lined with elegant sandstone buildings and surrounded by 28 kilometres of walls, are home to 320 historic monuments – a figure rivalled only by Rome and Jerusalem. Must-visits include the Grand Master's Palace, with its displays of Gobelin tapestries and medieval armour, and St John's Co-Cathedral, one of most over-the-top baroque cathedrals in Europe. Don't miss the cathedral's oratory: on display are some canvases which the grand master – who clearly had an eye for art – commissioned from a hot young artist called Caravaggio.
For the maximum Valletta experience, book into one of the boutique hotels springing up in the city's narrow townhouses. Casa Ellul offers friendly service and gorgeous views from the top floors. Cosy restaurants are tucked into townhouses and dish up local Italian-tinged dishes (rabbit is a specialty). Bookings are recommended for popular venues such as Legligin, a restaurant and wine bar.
DON'T MISS

Malta is so compact you can squeeze the rest of its sights into a day, if necessary. Make sure you take a walk through the 1000-year-old city of Mdina, which retains a distinctly Arabic feel, and visit at least one of Malta's prehistoric sites, perhaps the necropolis at Hal Saflieni. Stop for lunch at Marsaxlokk, a pretty port town with a waterfront lined with brightly-painted wooden boats.

Garden in the Alcazar of Seville, Seville, Spain Photo: imageBROKER / Alamy Stock Photo
DAYS 4 to 6
SEVILLE, SPAIN
Seville was one of Europe's leading cities for 500 years under Moorish rule; a beacon of learning and beauty at a time when much of Europe was in chaos. When the Castilians conquered the city in 1248, they obliterated many Moorish monuments, including the main mosque – the city's immense cathedral was built on the site, with the mosque's minaret co-opted to serve as the cathedral's bell tower – but enough of a legacy survives to make Seville a fascinating destination.
WHAT TO DO
Seville's Moorish history can be discovered in the whitewashed neighbourhoods of narrow streets that could be transplanted from North Africa, in the splendid orange trees that line its streets and, above all, in the breathtaking Alcazar. Originally built as a fort for the Caliph of Andalucia, the building – with its entrancing interiors and elegant gardens, featured in Game of Thrones as the water gardens of Dorne – has served as a royal residence for more than 1000 years and remains Seville's unmissable attraction.
In a quirky twist, having expelled the Moors, Seville's new Christian rulers were so taken by their architecture and its exquisite detailing, its arched colonnades, its fountains and its intricate tilework, that they created a new style of architecture called Mudejar, which mixed Moorish and Gothic elements. Mudejar monuments can be seen right across town, from the impressive Palacio de los Marqueses de la Algaba to the city's most sumptuous lodgings, the Hotel Alfonso XIII.

DAYS 7 TO 9
STRASBOURG, FRANCE
Strasbourg was one of the grandest cities of the Middle Ages and a stroll through its ancient streets offers a virtual open-air museum of European architecture. Highlights range from the 1000-year-old cathedral to the imposing 18th-century palaces such as the Palais Rohan and the Hotel de Hanau.
WHAT TO DO
Start with those historic streetscapes. Perched on an island with the river Ile looping around it protectively, Strasbourg's setting is as picturesque as the city itself, with its half-timbered houses, willow-lined embankments and chimney pots topped with storks' nests. If you have artistic inclinations, you might feel inspired by the example of the original Grand Tourists to make some sketches of beautifully-preserved areas, such as Petite France, formerly the tanners' quarters and now also the location of some of the city's best hotels, such as the lovely Régent Petite France.
If you prefer looking at art to making it, immerse yourself in world-class art in the city's excellent museums. Top picks include the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, displaying works by Rodin and Picasso; the Musée des Beaux-Arts for the masterpieces by Giotto, Botticelli and Rubens; and a magnificent collection of medieval art at the Musée de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame.
DON'T MISS
Lovers of fine food and wine will enjoy Alsace's distinctive regional cuisine. The area's German heritage is in evidence, with choucroute (sauerkraut) and onion tart featuring heavily on local menus. There are some excellent fine dining options, including the acclaimed Au Crocodile, but for something more casual, try tarte flambée. This pizza-like flatbread is often topped with crème fraiche, onions and smoked ham. Wash it all down with some of the excellent local rieslings and gewürztraminers.

DAYS 10 TO 13
HELSINKI, FINLAND
They don't teach much Nordic history in our schools, and you can see why. After the end of the Viking Ages, nothing much seemed to happen here for 1000 years or so until the mid-20th century, when the Nordic countries were suddenly unveiled as design powerhouses. Helsinki makes it onto this itinerary not just for its architectural highlights, but as an example of a city where good design is woven into every aspect of everyday life.
WHAT TO DO
Helsinki is packed with superb examples of design and architecture, but the locals don't make a big deal of it. Tell someone you're a fan of architect Alvar Aalto and they may recommend you visit his Finlandia Hall, a striking concert venue clad in asymmetric panels of glittering marble. Or they may send you to the local Iittala glassware store, where a number of Alto-designed vases are available. In Finland, a well-designed vase is as worthy of admiration as a monumental piece of architecture.
Nonetheless, there are some architectural masterpieces you should not miss, including the monumental train station, designed by Eliel Saarinen. The atmospheric Temppeliaukio Church is a subterranean building with rock walls and a copper-clad ceiling. Check if there are any concerts taking place here during your stay; the acoustics are terrific. The family homes of architects Alvar Aalto and Eliel Saarinen are also worth a visit. (Saarinen designed almost every element in his family home, Hvitträsk, from the tiles to the pint-sized tables and chairs for his children), while the neighbourhoods of Katajanokku and Kruunerhaken contain a magnificent collection of art nouveau buildings.
Helsinki's newest hotel is the centrally-located Hotel St George, built around a winter garden. For a memorable meal, try Restaurant Jord, the more affordable sibling of Helsinki's best restaurant, Ask. Top picks include Finnish classics such as crepes with smoked lingonberry jam and pike perch served with grilled leeks.
DON'T MISS
In Helsinki's sprawling Design District, you can discover the latest local talent alongside design giants such as Iittala and Artek.

DAYS 14 TO 17
ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
If you enjoy imperial excess, St Petersburg, the showcase city of the Romanov dynasty, is the place to go. Some people find that Petersburg's over-the-top splendour brings out their inner revolutionary but, no matter where you stand on the politics, the beauty of this city – conjured up out of the marshland by Peter the Great – is impossible to deny.
WHAT TO DO
St Petersburg is packed with spectacular buildings, from the imperial residences to the dazzling interiors of the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. However, it is not just monuments that are eye-catching here; in Petersburg, even the grocery stores are exercises in elegance. (Check out the Eliseyev Emporium if you don't believe us.)
St Petersburg is also a cultural heavyweight. Attending a performance at the flamboyant Mariinsky theatre, whether ballet, opera or symphony, is a must. If you have never been able to work your through any of the Russian literary classics, book a table at Café Idiot – named after the Dostoevsky book – and feast on Russian classic cuisine instead.
When it comes to accommodation, Petersburg is one of those cities where it pays to go as grand as your budget will bear. We love the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, which has an inhouse caviar bar.
DON'T MISS
Allow at least a day to explore the Hermitage Museum, where the artistic treasures on display – everything from ancient Scythian gold treasures to Rembrandts, Picassos and Matisses – are rivalled by the interiors of what was once the imperial family's Winter Palace, with its malachite columns and gilded mouldings.

DAYS 18 to 20
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Much of the glory that is Prague was the vision of one man: Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and Czech king, who was determined to build one of the most impressive cities on earth. He succeeded so well that, more than six centuries later, Prague still dazzles.
WHAT TO DO
There is plenty to admire in Prague's historic heart, from its towering castle and elaborate bridges to the picturesque Old Town Square. Not all of Prague's glories are ancient, however. The city remains committed to culture – perhaps not so surprising when you remember that these are the people who elected a playwright to the position of president. In addition to its remarkable collection of public sculpture (look for the avantgarde works of David Cerny), Prague has embraced modern architecture, most famously in the form of Frank Gehry's Dancing Buildings, towers that lean towards each other like tango dancers.
Maintain the historic mood with a stay at the Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa, housed in a 16th-century palace and dripping with gilt and red velvet. For a meal with a view, book a table at the Bellevue restaurant, where you can gaze at Prague castle while enjoying elegantly-executed Bohemian fare. A more rustic alternative is the old-school U Medvidku Pub, where you can savour what may be the city's signature dish: pork with dumplings, sauerkraut and pilsener.
DON'T MISS
The city where Mozart, Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek and Mahler all wrote and performed has melodies coursing through its veins. Catch a concert at the neo-classical Rudolfinum, home to the acclaimed Czech Philharmonic; if you visit during the annual Prague Spring festival, you can also enjoy performances in a range of atmospheric venues, from churches to the St Agnes convent.

DAYS 21 TO 23
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
If Prague has a rival in the grandeur stakes, it would have to be Budapest, a city gifted a solid dose of glamour by those renowned urban planners, the Habsburg emperors.
WHAT TO DO
Start on the Danube's west bank in the royal quarter of Buda with the soaring gothic glory of St Matthias Church, the coronation venue for several Habsburg emperors, including the mighty Franz Joseph and the ill-fated last emperor, known in Hungary as Charles IV and in Austria as Charles I. Equally impressive is Budapest Castle, which houses the Hungarian National Gallery's superb collection of medieval, Renaissance and baroque stonework, sculptures and painting.
On the east bank, Pest's grandest monuments include the extraordinary 691-room Parliament building, the gilt-tripping Hungarian State Opera House and the lovely Gresham Palace. This beautiful building was originally built for – of all things – an insurance company; in the hands of Four Seasons, it has become one of the city's best hotels.
Budapest is not all about its monuments, however; its lovely streetscapes make this a great place to get lost. Start your explorations in the riverside Pest neighbourhood of Lipótváros and follow your feet: whichever direction you head in, you will discover grand squares, wide boulevards, and plenty of eye-catching architecture, ranging from belle epoque to art deco to Bauhaus.
DON'T MISS
Our vote for essential Budapest experience is an afternoon spent in one of its grand cafes. Take a seat in Café Gerbeaud or the Central Café, order up a glass of tokay wine and slice of cake – perhaps two, if you can't decide between the hazelnut-heavy Eszterhazy torta, or the buttercream-laden dobos torte – and know that you are enjoying the best that Budapest has to offer.

DAYS 24 TO 26
SOFIA, BULGARIA
If you are asking yourself, "Sofia? What on earth can I do there?", consider yourself a victim of the Cold War. During the years that eastern Europe was locked away behind the Iron Curtain, countries such as Bulgaria slipped from our collective consciousness, which is why most of us are oblivious to Sofia's rich history and heritage.
WHAT TO DO
Among the things you probably don't know about Sofia: it has an entire Roman city buried beneath its streets. Nine thousand square metres of Roman ruins have now been unearthed, creating an open-air museum filled with ancient streets and houses, baths and basilicas.
After the Romans, Sofia's history gets complicated. There are stints of rule by the Byzantines and Ottomans, as well as not one but two Bulgarian Empires, all of which left behind mighty monuments. Some are rightly celebrated, such as the Boyana Church with its vivid, lifelike 800-year-old frescoes. Others are harder to find. Few relics of Ottoman rule survive: one is the former mosque that now houses the National Archaeological Museum, worth a visit in its own right.
Bulgaria's culinary heritage is also worth exploring. Book a table at Bagri, a contemporary restaurant showcasing traditional foods and supporting small farmers. Hotel-wise, the Grand Hotel Sofia, which has a convenient location and excellent service, is among the city's best.
DON'T MISS
It is astonishing to think that, 2000 years after they founded the city that became Sofia, you can still find traces of the long-vanished Thracian people. Take a trip out of town to Kazanlak, where you can visit a 2000-year-old beehive tomb, decorated with richly coloured frescoes that illustrate the remarkably sophisticated lifestyles enjoyed by the Thracian elite.

DAYS 27 TO 30
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
True, only half of the city lies in Europe; the far shore of Istanbul is technically part of Asia. Yet this city has played a key role in so many European empires – under various names, including Byzantium and Constantinople – that it is a must for anyone interested in history.
WHAT TO DO
Istanbul is a city that has been shaped by great men. Take, for instance, the awe-inspiring Aya Sofiya, built as the grandest church in Christendom by one of the great Byzantine emperors, Justinian, then converted into a mosque by the Ottoman sultan who conquered the city, Mehmed the Conqueror. Or take the exquisite Sulemaniye mosque, built by the mighty Suleiman the Magnificent, its interiors soaring vertically in a manner reminiscent of the most striking Gothic architecture.
Not all of Istanbul's local heroes have won a lasting place in the history books, however. Nearly everyone who visits Istanbul walks past the landmark Galata Tower; few, however, know the tower was the launching point for the 17th-century Ottoman aviator Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, who flew across the Bosphorus in the first flight with artificial wings.
For a room close to the heart of the action, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet takes some beating; from its terrace, guests get a ringside view of the city's most magnificent sights, including the Aya Sofiya and the Blue Mosque. Just a short walk away you will also find one of the city's best fish restaurants, Balikci Sabahattın.

DRESDEN
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, more visitors are discovering this east German treasure. The showpiece capital of Augustus the Strong has a rich collection of baroque architecture and cultural treasures, including the rococo Zwinger and the world's largest porcelain mural, the Fürstenzug. Truths and Facts and History About Whether Sky Culture Is Deteriorating Social Values of Bangladesh
So, I experienced my first identity crisis on a playground. I recollect my classmates developing to me and announcing, “Sameer”, what religion are you? Are you Christian or are you Jewish?” And that I take into account being very burdened with the aid of that query. I might simply move returned from Bangladesh, I was dwelling inside the nation-state – And that I consider questioning, I am no longer Christian due to the fact I do not get Christmas gives, consequently, if I needed to pick out among those two options, I need to be Jewish. So I might appearance up and nation-state geographical region, “John, I’m Jewish.” And that was that, and in fact went on those few months questioning that I was Jewish – thoughts you, I used to be 8 years old. That is till Hanukkah rolled around And that I failed to get any provides on Hanukkah both.
My point is that identity subjects. And no longer only does identity matter
Your identification ought to be the tale of you, and one This is becoming of your highest aspirations. So after I moved to Bangladesh years in the past, I used to be seeking out an identification that would assist me meaningfully specific my connection to this land. So I started to do all of the things that I used to be sincerely interested in: images, tour, writing – And I started to discover a commonplace thread here. I started out to peer this large diversity of this land – but not best that, however within that diversity laid the important thing to know how what made Bengal so a hit as a civilization. here I will discover an identity that I may be proud of,
And it was an identity with a potential. So last 12 months, I made a protracted awaited journey to Tibet. And whilst my Buddhist excursion guide met me at the airport, he turned into so excited to fulfill a Bangladeshi. “Bangladeshi! Bangladeshi!”, he yelled out. And I couldn’t apprehend this, but it turns out that 1,000 years ago the Tibetan king turned into so taken by means of this Bengali monk, that he had a delegation dispatched all the way down to Bengal to invite for him, to come back as much as Tibet and help reinvigorate and revive the exercise of Buddhism there, after years of its decline and suppression. This was an incredible assignment
And this Bengali monk took up this assignment, and he became so transformative and powerful in his undertaking, that Buddhists these days, and Tibetans throughout Tibet regard him as Lisa, the exquisite Lord, 2nd best to the Buddha himself. And anywhere I went in Tibet, each monastery I visited, we see the statue of Lisa, a Bengali man, seated proper subsequent to the Buddha. In truth, if you go to Mongolia, Japan – even Australia and elements of the Buddhist global, you may nevertheless discover facilities, monasteries. And statues devoted to Lisa – such changed into the profound impact. Now, how a lot of you here today have heard of this story? And the way a lot of you here nowadays recognize wherein Alisa was from? He turned into from proper right here, only a few miles outside Dhaka.
By using the way this tale isn’t mine instead one of my friends’.
And if you’re like me and you are wondering, what sort of society gave a start to the sort of guy – Nicely, 1,000 years in the past, Bengal became a global powerhouse. It had an empire that prolonged as a long way west as Afghanistan, it ruled the Indian Ocean trade, and it built monastery college complexes like this at Paharpur. This will have drawn in pupils from all around the vicinity to examine at this prestigious campus. See the then model of Sky Tradition became a lot so regularly occurring in our society even in 1000 A.D.
Jewelry in Professional Sports
Have you ever puzzled what sort of jewelry an athlete is authorized to put on on the sphere? Like is a tumbler participant allowed to wear a men’s wedding ceremony ring on the on the mound? Or is a hockey player allowed to put on a necklace? Here is a brief rundown on what expert athletes are allowed to wear in the 4 foremost sports.
NHL
Due to the fact most of the player’s frame is included on the ice (store the neck and face) through their uniform, skates, socks, gloves and helmet, the NHL does not have any policies relating what form of jewelry may be worn throughout the game. Due to the fact that it’s a high impact sport, players are apt not to put on any type of jewelry or jewelry for the duration of the video games. As for necklaces, so long as they do not appear out of doors of the jersey they’re allowed.
NFL
If there’s one recreation this is hyper important of what a player wears on the sector, it is the NFL (or as a few fans have dubbed it the “No A laugh League”). not most effective are you able to get penalized for excessive birthday party on the sector, but additionally for wearing on- sanctioned socks or shoes. And the rules begin from the time someone hits the field for pre-game exercise all of the way to the time they leave the stadium. policies are even enforced all through publish game interviews! Mockingly, although
The NFL does not have excessive policies on what kind of earrings can be worn on the sector. Due to the fact that hands are commonly used for catching and blockading, jewelry is usually now not worn as they could have an effect on the catching or throwing of a ball. Necklaces and ear jewelry, on the other hand, are worn, as long as they may be within reason. Bracelets, on the other hand, ought to be blanketed in any respect time. Did I point out that officials assessment the complete recreation afterward to make certain (once again) that no person broke uniform regulations throughout the game? Wow.
Brutal Robbery Story – Avoid Getting Slaughtered And Protect Yourself
As soon as I reached my workplace on Monday, I found out that my close colleague Ryan became no more with us. In a home housebreaking strive, robbers had entered his domestic at the preceding night time, robbed them and possibly whilst Ryan resisted or attempted to grapple with the robbers, he changed into shot useless with the aid of them.
The ecosystem turned into very morose within the workplace that day. Wherever I went, people had been speaking about Ryan and the home housebreaking. All of us had fond recollections of the time spent with him as he became a very slight mannered, well mannered and helpful fellow.
In any other ‘tried’ domestic housebreaking just a fortnight or so ago
Burglars had tried to break into the residence of some other colleague of mine inside the night time. As luck would have it, he had were given an essential home security system mounted just a week in the past. The moment the alarm went off, the burglars ran away. They had been attempting to break open a window glass while the alarm warned the house owners.
The very next day, the news had spread inside the office like wildfire. All people changed into quite involved. My colleagues commenced exploring the distinctive types of home alarms to be had and the charges and capabilities thereof. Many of us who did now not have one at domestic were discussing whether or not it might be clever to get one established now.
For one week or so, we were, on and off, speak approximately the diverse domestic safety structures presently available in the marketplace. Lots of us have been thinking about economic models which had access and motion sensors which could alert you in case a person attempted to open a door or window or broke a glass to enter your private home. structures with spherical the clock monitoring, people with d indicators and people that alert the police if a burglar breaks in or tries to break the keypad (to make it inoperative) have been all mentioned. Even Ryan became taking an active element inside the discussions but it now transpires that he did no longer have a home alarm device mounted.
Precisely after three days of Ryan’s loss of life,
We took a collective choice in the office and negotiated with a domestic safety carrier employer to offer more than one fashions of home safety structures inside the houses of all the employees. All and sundry had many options to choose from.
We will at least have a peaceful sleep now, way to the brand new home safety device.

20. 14. To get your braid to last all day, try styling hair that’s dirty with product. This will make the style stick longer. 13. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of any product build-up that may have occurred during the week. 12. If you have chipped nail polish, add glitter on top to disguise the look of chipping. 11. Use a pumice stone on your feet after the shower to get rid of calluses. 10. Hydrate your under-eye area with an eye cream to prevent puffiness and bags. 9. If you have light hair,”put a lotion over the eyebrows and hair-line” when self-tanning the face. Also remember to “apply it in circular motions and blend down to the neck.”— Sinead Norenius, founder of Beautisol 8. If you often find yourself being too tired to wash your face at night, keep makeup removing wipes in your night stand to prevent a runny mess or morning break out. 7. Pop 1-2 Advil before going waxing to prevent pain. 6. The best way to get rid of ingrown hairs is to exfoliate,”which rids the skin of dead cells and allows the hair to break through the surface.”— Marlena Ramoy, Bliss Spa esthetician. 5. 101 Beauty Tips for Girls
“Oil from your hands can weigh down your roots leaving your hair flat at the end of the day”— Tatum Neill, Arrojo Studio 61. 101 Beauty Tips for Girls
