you and tanjiro were staying at a nearby village, since the rain was slowly increasing. you wanted to accompany him on a mission and it took a lot of begging and pleading, but he finally gave up.

it was during the night that something approached the small hut you two were spending the night in. you moved in your sleep, tanjiro’s hand not holding yours anymore. when you opened your eyes you noticed tanjiro sitting on his futon and reaching his hand to grab his nichirin blade from beside him on the floor.

“baby?” you whispered, a bit nervous. “i smell a demon coming closer,” he informed and then turned to you. “i’ll be back very soon, but don’t come out. stay there hidden until i come back and try not to make a noise, hmm?” he cupped your cheek and kissed your forehead. “i won’t let it get inside.”

tanjiro exited without second thinking and you tried to stay as still as possible, not making a sound. you trusted him and knew he would be quick, he always was.

“ hold still, tanj’! ”

the fifteen year old grimaced upon the tug to his sensitive head. he had gotten severely injured on a mission once more and was bed ridden for weeks. due to this, he was covered in grind that hadn't been removed from his hair nor body. since you had taken on the roll of being both his and nezuko’s somewhat guardian, it was your decision to bathe him once he had awaken.

of course, no personal parts were exposed to you; nor were yours to him. you let him dip into the hot spring on his own accords when the time rolled around, even though it was a bit difficult on his end, before following in after him with the second skin of a swimming tunic. tanjiro was quite nervous since he saw the scene to be a little inappropriate, but you assured him there was nothing to worry about. you were no weirdo and on the accord, he was in no shape to wash himself.

you decided to start with his hair, which is what was happening at the very moment. your hands were rough, to say the least. digging into his soft tresses to wash away the built up grime and sweat was your best option - was what you had thought to yourself. that is why your knuckles made work at doughing into his scalp; roughly massaging, as well as rubbing away at his hair.

“ ‘m sorry for using such brutal force. ” you huffed, blowing steam to the side. “ but you're dirty, ya’ know. you were stinking up the hospital room, I have to clean you, kid. ”

‘ did she have to put it like that? ’ he sweat dropped at your blunt wording. although, tanjiro knew he was in need of a cleansing, so he didn't peep a complaint.

you were finished within ten minutes of non stop scrubbing and combing through his hair with your fingers. once finished, you smiled down at the smaller male, eyes beaming.

“ okay, close your eyes! ” you were rather cheerful about the whole ordeal because you enjoyed taking care of others. tanjiro was your little brother, too — he reminded you of your biological younger siblings, who have long passed... it was part of the reason this moment was seen as a great bonding experience. and, perhaps, something for healing your inner wounds.

“ okay, y/n-san.. ” the burgundy haired male mumbled, letting his eyes fall shut, lips forming a loose o shape in relaxation. with a hum, you cupped the back of his neck and guided him backwards, just until the crown of his head peeked into the water. that's when you scooped up some water into your conjoined palms, and started pouring it over his head little by little.

tanjiro sighed, blissfully. a content smile taking over his face. “ this feels quite nice. ”

“ I'm glad you're enjoying it.. ” your voice was quiet as you said this. you were usually talkative... so tanjiro grew slightly concerned. he nearly opened an eye to spare you a glance, before immediately remembering that soap could get into it if he did so.

“ is something on your mind, nee-san? ” the male casually asked, using the horrific family-bound noun as if it were nothing. he's used it before with you, though only one time.

It made you stop your movements, actually, but only because warmth filled your chest and caught you by surprise. with a soft smile, you resumed pouring the last of water over his hair, before combing your fingers through it to rid the strands of any knots and extra suds. “ I'm fine, tanj’. I... have some things on my mind, but I'll be okay. ”

he was quiet for a moment. by the slight twitch of his nose, you could only guess he was smelling the air to see if what you said had been true. It indeed was.. well- maybe the slightest of lies was in there, but the boy didn't seem to question it.

“ I see.. ” he finally spoke, voice gentle. “ I hope you know I am always here for you. ” tanjiro opened his eyes finally, meeting yours which were peering down at him curiously. his prune colored orbs glistened with truthfulness as he continued to speak. “ you're my family, nee-san. we must always stick together through thick and thin. ” a smile graced his lips. “ remember, no matter what heaviness weighs on your mind, I'm always here to take it away. ”

the male winced, as he lifted an injured hand out of the water. his sprained, bruise tinted pinky stretched out to you. “ I promise to always stick by you, y/n. ”

you nearly cried from how sweet tanjiro was... but you knew better. he'd worry that he had said something wrong, because that's just how silly tanjiro was. so you chose to hold in your tears, and settle with a small sniffle, before hooking your pinky to his.

“ I too, promise to always stick by you, little brother. ”

you groan, trying to move your body, but you are just too sore. the battle with the spider demons really did a number on you. but you're a stubborn mf.

your fingers twitch, and then your arms. it's working! you brace your arms on either side of your body, trying to lift yourself up. nope...

your ribs are just too sore. you fall back on the bed, holding your middle. so you focus on your breathing, hoping that will speed the healing process a bit while you pout. the breathing part is a little hard, as whatever medicine you were given is making you a little loopy. it's very hard to focus.

it's been a couple of minutes before you hear your door creak slightly, and you think it's shinobu coming to check on you.

"y/n?"

oh! it's, "tanjiro? what are you doing here?" he walks over, and sits gently on your bed, careful not to touch you.

"i was checking on you. you were asleep for so long."

"what about you? you were worse off then me."

"i'm feeling great, thanks for asking." you don't know why, but something about him makes you want to touch his precious face. the damn medicine.

and before you know it, you are touching him. your fingers caress his face, his scar, his lips.

his hand comes up to meet yours and he lowers your hand onto his lap. is his face red? you can't really tell because your eyelids are becoming quite heavy (his face is red). you whisper his name before closing your eyes. you think you feel soft lips on your forehead before falling asleep.

when you wake, your body feels much better, and you can tell your body has gotten used to total concentration breathing again. and you can sit up!

you walk around the butterfly mansion, searching for one of your friends. that's when you stumble upon zenitsu, sitting outside looking gloomily at the woods.

"oh hi! how have you been?" you take a seat next to him, hoping for a nice civil conversation.

but when he realizes it's you, he immediately starts sobbing, throwing himself into your lap.

"i've been horrible, y/n-chan! you wouldn't even believe it! i almost turned into a spider. and look! my arms shrunk! it's horrible!"

it was a little awkward, having your close friend in such a compromising position on your lap. but you didn't need to endure it for long, because as soon as your starting expressing your pity for zenitsu, an arm reached around you and lifted him up.

"quit being a pervert, zenitsu." you look up to see tanjiro towering over you. you give him a little smile and lean against his leg.

"my hero," you fake swoon. it still causes him to blush, dropping zenitsu on his stomach.

you both ignore the whiny "heyyyy" that follows, because tanjiro takes a seat next to you.

"how are you feeling?"

"much better! it seems you're doing great too. you've been training a lot, haven't you?"

"is it that obvious?"

you cover your hand with the sleeve of your hospital gown and gently wipe your hand across his brow, which was slick with sweat.

"just a bit," you say with a cheeky grin, with your hand resting on cheek. he leans into it a bit with a smile.

you don't know how long the two of you would've stayed like that because inosuke tackles him off the porch.

"tanjiro!" you lean over to make sure he's ok, but he's already being dragged off to train some more.

"you know, he visited you everyday."

"hm?" to be honest, you forgot zenitsu was still there.

"he did. i've only ever seen him that worried over nezuko before. you must be special."

now it was your turn to be embarrassed.

you couldn't sleep. nightmares kept plaguing you to the point where you were a bit scared to sleep. so you decided to take a walk. you don't know why, but your legs started taking you towards tanjiro's room. but you only got halfway before seeing him in the hall.

"hey you."

"couldn't sleep?"

"no."

"me neither." there was an awkward pause, so you started tracing the wood patterns on the floor with your feet.

"do you wanna..." tanjiro trailed off, so you looked up at him, and he kinda blushed.

"want to what?"

"hang out in my room for the night?" you blinked at him, totally not expecting that. not that you weren't ecstatic for the invitation. you took a little long with your response, because tanjiro immediately turns red and starts waving his hands.

"not to do anything of course! just to talk! or sleep. you know, just to get out of the hallway. because i would NEVER,"

"TANJIRO! it's fine! i would love to."

"oh." he gently grabs your hand and pulls you to his room. he was setting up his futon on the ground when you asked, "where's nezuko?"

you didn't notice her box in the room.

"oh! she has a seperate room this time! aoi thought it would be best, so we could both have some alone time."

"i'm so sorry to intrude on that alone time," you say with a teasing smile.

"of course you aren't." he sits on the ground next to the futon and pats the blanket. "you can sleep here tonight. i'll sleep on the ground."

"the ground? it's your room! i'll sleep on the ground."

"i'm not letting you sleep on the ground. you're still healing."

"so are you!"

"i'm sleeping on the ground."

"let's just share it."

"...is that ok?"

"i wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't, silly."

"right." he causiously sits next to you. "are you sure this is ok?"

"yes."

"ok."

there's some more silence before you turn to him. "you know, right before you ran into battle with that spider thingy, you told me to stay alive. remember?"

"i remember."

"because you had something you wanted to confess to me."

"...yeah."

"well, confess." he turns his head from you, hiding his face in his hands.

"this is so not why i brought you into my room."

you scoot closer to him, intrigued. "tanjiro, it's fine! what did you want to tell me?"

"well,"

"are you secretly training to be a hashira?"

"what, no! i wanted to say,"

"you mastered hinokami kagura?"

"no!"

"you're going to," you can't finish interrupting him because he slaps his hand over your mouth.

"will you let me finish?"

"sorry."

"i wanted to tell you..."

"yes?"

"i w-wanted to tell you that i love you." you were not expecting that (dumbass fr). "you don't have to say anything, i just needed to let you know."

you didn't know what else to say. you loved him so much. you never thought this day would come, because you didn't think he returned your affections.

"oh tanjiro." you just leap into his arms, causing you both to fall to the floor. "i love you so much."

"really?" you lean back up into your sitting position, pulling him with you. placing your hand on his neck, you slowly lean forward, silently asking if this was alright. he just closed the gap between the two of you, lifting you onto his lap like you weighed nothing.

the kiss started out very slow and sweet, until you grabbed his hair to ground yourself. that enticed a guttural whine from the man under you, who pulls you even closer to his body, and presses his lips harder against yours.

you pull apart, which illictes another whine from him, until you start pressing wet kisses to the side of his neck. you do that until he pulls you back off to press his lips onto yours again. you grind down on him, and he pulls off of you to say something, staring at you with his beautiful eyes, before you hear,

"I CAN HEAR YOU, YOU KNOW."

you both look at each other and start laughing. zenitsu, you lil cockblock.

1600 Followers Event!

Hello everyone! While it wasn’t that long ago that we celebrated 1500, here we are at 1600! Thank you all so much for supporting my silly little blog with my silly little writing! Here’s to hopefully many more!

Anyway! Onto the event! I’m doing a thing where I’ll write a little reader-insert thing (ranging from drabbles to full-on one-shots) based on a character and a prompt that you send me! I have a list of 20 angsty dialogue prompts for you to choose from!

Fandom Field Trip to Ittouseki: The travel narrative version

As this is going to get more nerdy and ramblesome, I've made a separate, more reblogable post with just a basic blurb and a few photos of Ittouseki, the unofficial Kimetsu hotspot that everyone says looks like this scene:

While the original legend of the split rock described in that post does bare a significant resemblance to the Kimetsu legend, I would not posit it as a canon location both due to the geographical distance from Tanjiro's home on Mt. Kumotori, and due to its significantly lower elevation. Tanjiro notes how the air on Mt. Sagiri is much thinner than what he was used to, after all. Proximity-wise I find another split rock, Ryuu no Wariishi, in Nagano Prefecture a better candidate due to its proximity. However, it’s also at a much lower altitude than Mt. Kumotori. Still, it’s very possible that Tanjiro lived at a lower elevation than Mt. Kumotori’s summit, and that Urokodaki conducted most of the training at the higher elevation mountains nearby.

But, despite the fandom's best theories, there is no canon location of Mt. Sagiri, but I'll update if anything is revealed in the new fanbook coming out next month (that fanbook is like a canon trigger I’m waiting to pull on fanfic I mean to write. Do it, Gotouge. Make me pull this trigger, I dare you).

That being said, Kimetsu fans of all ages love this place and the locals in the very sparsely populated Yagyu Village love the hype. 

Believe it or not I was just as much there as a Yagyu clan samurai fangirl as a Kimetsu fangirl (but I'll spare you that half), and everywhere I went the old people were smiling at my Tanjiro muffler and asking if I had been to the rock yet.

Speaking of this series of coffee cans, I got this one while on my Zenitsu field trip a week in advance. While both spots aren't that hard to access from downtown Nara City, trying to get to both rural spots in a single day on public transportation would have been difficult.

Anyway, part of my luck in Yagyu was hitting it off with a member of the very small tourism bureau, who describes what a hotspot this whole village has been for cosplayers for traditional Japan and rural settings; the locals do generally smile on it, so I didn't feel that strange carrying around a katana umbrella. Little did I know I wouldn't even need it as a prop, for swords are readily available. What's more, my host prepped my guest room with cosplay props and showed me on the way where the bookshelf where all the Kimetsu manga was (I had already noticed it like there was a magnet in my eyes, but thanks).

Speaking of welcoming nerds, one of only a couple little places to get lunch serves Kimetsu Udon. It's a sword splitting a rock. Get it?

Furthermore, on my way to the rock, I came across the old dudes making charcoal, and that night I made dinner using a traditional hearth. The dudes gave me charcoal too! It happened to be my birthday, and I was thrilled. Charcoal is so cool, when you get down to it. It's said to have evil-warding properties and it's displayed by my front door now. It'd in two pieces down because I accidently broke it, though. Whoops.

Since the pic limit has prompted me to move that real-life Kamado aesthetic to a different post, that brings this post, and this journey to a close.

Demon Slayer - Name Games

So ive been kinda getting into kimetsu no yaiba lately and on the one hand it hasn’t really hooked me or anything story-wise just yet, but boy oh boy am i loving the aesthetic and general design sensibilities.  The biggest motifs at work, at least from where I’ve read so far, that I really love are the use of some traditional Japanese fabric patterns and the use of hanafuda card motifs.

I don’t think I’ll get as into this all as I have with Bleach but I wanted to put some of these rambling thoughts somewhere, so here we go...

the most obvious hanafuda reference is in tanjiro’s earrings which are explicitly referenced as looking like hanafuda card.  ironically of all the hanafuda references though, his are actually the only modified ones.  His earrings are based on the Moon card in the suit of Silvergrass/August, and not the sun and crane card from the pine/janurary suit.  In Hanafuda, each of 12 suits has a core plant(usually flowering), an affiliated month, and within each suit 1 ribbon and 1 “animal” card. (although not all the animal cards are actual animals).

The whole Kamado family has an ichimatsu:”checker" pattern motif, although Nezuko also has an asanoha:”hemp leaf” pattern as well.  The checker pattern doesnt really have any overt meaning, as it’s a pretty universal pattern, but it does have associations with heroes and lead actors via kabuki theatre costuming.  The hemp leaf is a symbol of growth and good health, and is often used in baby clothes.

Also as usual i’m a sucker for name games.  Kamado[竈門]: "Hearth Gate" and  Tanjiro[炭治郎]: "Charcoal Regulate Son."  It's an irregular construction, as the name Tanjiro is a real name but the “charcoal” kanji isn’t how you’d normally write the Tan- part. (More conventional writings would probably be [丹治郎], which reads as [丹] "red-earth"/"rust-colored.") Both names play up his family trade as charcoal makers/sellers, if that wasn’t clear, which in turn plays into his overall sun and fire themes.

Nezuko[禰豆子]: "Ancestral-shrine bean child" is a neat name and also a homonym with Nezuko[鼠子]: "Rat child."  I assume the “rat” pun is there to evoke gnawing, as in her demon fang gag.  The bean, as a seed and as food are probably meant to evoke good health and growth, like the asanoha pattern.  

Zenitsu’s associated card is the Thunder card from the Willow/November suit.  The same suit’s animal card has a Sparrow on it.

His fabric pattern is an uroko:”scale,” pattern probably most recognized as the hojo family crest, which in turn is most recognized as being the same as the triforce in legend of zelda.  They are a stylized geometric pattern made to resemble fish or snake or even dragon scales.  They can have some implication of protection or warding, but are also commonly used in theatre costume where it evokes treachery and ambush by association with snakes waiting to strike.  probably meant as a play on his whole hidden sword skill gimmick.

His name reads, Agatsuma[我妻] "My Wife" and Zenitsu[善逸] "Good Evasion."  The latter is obvious but i dont know what to make of that surname.  Maybe a joke about him wanting to take a wife so he won’t die alone.

Inosuke’s associated card is the Boar card from the Bushclover/July suit.  His “fabric” is jokingly a non-fabric, as it’s just animal pelts, rather than anything manmade.

Name wise... Hashibira[嘴平] "Flat beak", Inosuke[伊之助] "That, This Assistant."  A pun on the "ino" of inoshishi[猪] meaning "boar," so his name sounds like it would be Inosuke[猪助] "Boar Assistant."  I don’t know what to make of the surname though....

Kanao and the Kocho sisters take their motif from the Butterfly card in the Peony/June suit.  The capes mimicking butterfly wings is pretty obvious but also not really a traditional pattern.  I haven’t gotten too far into their deal yet.

Tsuyuri[栗花落] "chestnut flower drop," Kanao [カナヲ].  I’m not super sure on this one, but chestnuts are probably more iconic for the nut than the flower, and the nut of course falls in its spiny shell.  They are also broadly associated with autumn as seasonal symbols.  I don’t think it was the intention but the use of “chestnut” and “fall/drop” together makes me think of scattering caltrops on the ground to slow pursuers, like a ninja. 

Kocho[胡蝶] is written “Foreign Butterfly” where the character for “foreign” is used in compounds circling around a core idea of “False” or ”Suspicious.”  But historically it can also read as “Barbarian” in reference to a particular time and place in China, but it’s the reason it also means “foreign.”  Either way it means her name can read “Barbarian Butterfly” which is just the coolest mashup of imagery.  Shinobu [しのぶ] is just written phonetically, as was Kanao.

But also Muzan has his motif of western style floral lace in stark juxtaposition to the recognizably japanese styles of most of the hunters.

I do really like the fact that the villain group is numbered according to an old timekeeping method that Japan doesn’t use anymore.  It’s a derivative of the borrowed Chinese time keeping system (which is mirrored by their zodiac cycle) and divides each day into 12 “hours”: 6 of day and 6 of night --a top six and a bottom six, just like Muzan’s 12 demons.

What’s really cool is that these units of time were actually relative to the season and the literal daylight.  So the 6 “hours” were always equal to one another, but the day hours and night hours shifted length inversely to one another during the summer and winter.  When western clocks were introduced via trade with Holland, it didnt take long for the Japanese to develop a unique clock mechanism of their own that let them turn a dial to shift the clock face around according to the season

And speaking of demons.... the fixation on Wisteria also ties back to the April suit in hanafuda, which has a wisteria motif.  There’s a family crest coopted into a design that shows up briefly modified from the Fujiwara family crest.

Anyway, like I said, I’m not super super into the series just yet, but these were just a bunch of little things that jumped out at me as I was going, and that I told myself I’d post about at some point, if i ever managed to hammer out any substantially sized blurbs about it all.  There’s a lot more going on too, even in just the handful of volumes i’ve picked through so far, but not all of it as consistent or reaching across multiple characters as a these were.
