i wanna add something not very relevant to the point of this post, but the rockstar couples listed out at the end reminded me of something. upon finishing writing this post, i realized it's more relevant to an ask lia got months ago regarding the question of mary and the author's intent (specifically the one where an anon likened mary to dutch and micah in terms of story function, basically)
if mary acts like an “obstacle” to arthur and constantly “nags” him, she isn't actually supposed to be written as a threat to his happiness as many want to interpret, rather she is meant to be seen as the person who cares deeply enough to give him shit so that hopefully he can wise up and live a better life. in other words, she's designated by the writers to be “the right one” for him.
take franklin and tanisha as an example, an even more underdeveloped relationship than arthur and mary (albeit with a similar background): tanisha shows up exactly once in the story (and once outside of the story in a quick random encounter that you can go for the entire game without seeing) and it's almost at the end of the game. in that very cutscene, she appears at his doorsteps just to throw a bunch of criticisms about his life choices at him, gave him the news that she was soon marrying another man, and urged him to go save their friend lamar. after their heated exchange, she just stormed out of his house, never to be seen again in the story. the game doesn't once show her saying one nice word to him. however, fast forward to 8 years later, rockstar released a dlc (that also takes place 8 years later in the game's universe) that informs us tanisha and franklin in fact have been married and had kids, and they seem to be a perfectly happy family.
franklin gets his happy ending with a woman who has been portrayed to be nothing but “antagonistic” toward him, or at least she seems that way with a cursory glance, but the dlc implied that she must have abandoned her relationship with her ex-fiancé and married franklin at some point after the main story. if that can happen, it's because she genuinely loved him, and all the perceived “hostility” toward him in the story wasn't actual malice, it was persuasion to drive him into becoming better. this is deliberate on rockstar's part.
michael and amanda also have the similar arc (but rather than implied, it's a central plot point, so i won't get into it here) and relationship dynamic. john and abigail also briefly go through this in the rdr2 epilogue.
all of this is to say, if the author intent that “mary isn't supposed to be the Bad Woman of arthur's life, but rather his star crossed lover who is actually just trying to look out for him” wasn't clear enough in the story, we can refer to the same team of writers’ other similar works to find confirmation to that claim. basically, if you perfunctorily look at this dynamic and the woman seems like an obstacle to the man, that's not the proof she is wrong or condemnable, if anything that's more like rockstar's way of telling you she is the one for him, the one who he should be with (and– had arthur not died— will be with). obviously it's okay to criticize this writing choice, but i just wanna point out that's the “language” that they've consistently deployed when writing romantic relationships. i'm surprised people still question the validity of the claim "she's not evil to him actually" when there's already a pattern.
isnt mary repeatedly using arthur meant to be a thing in the game?? is that just a thing they didn't think of when writing that all out?? we're meant feel sympathy for her character- which makes sense but is her going back again and again to get arthur to help her meant to be notable...?
Sorry, I just saw this. I hope this doesn't come out of nowhere for you anon lol! It's been a while...
Yeah it's meant to be notable in that they're still in love but his inability to leave the outlaw life prevents them from acting on that love, but they're human and can't help finding each other no matter what. That's the author's intent there, lol.
Being ungenerous and reading this as her 'using' him really, really grinds my gears because this implies that their relationship is purely transactional? Like, she got him to do something, but she didn't make it worth his while, so she clearly just used him. People can ask for help from others they trust without being manipulative, you know? You might not be implying all that, but I don't see why else yall are insistent on this reading of 'using' him. There's a reason why Rockstar seems hellbent on writing troubled relationships for their protagonists, e.g. see Michael and Amanda; Franklin and Tanisha; John and Abigail.

You know GTA 5’s political commentary is extra shallow because if the writers really had the big bold ideological cojones they seem to want the audience to think they have than they’d definitely go out of their way to flesh out the Mike/Trevor/Brad/Amanda & Franklin/Lamar/Tonya/Tanisha parallel, delving into the similarities and differences between these two lower class, criminally aligned social circles across both different decades and different racial backgrounds.

Could we get some random Franklin Clinton hcs?
HEADCANONS: Franklin Clinton!
He had to teach himself to iron clothes as his aunt held no responsibility over his laundry or chores. He had this independence from an early beginning.
Kept all his high-school yearbooks and would reminisce by looking at the pictures.
Used to be active on social media but grew inactive after meeting Michael. The habit of “lying low” took a toll.
Is really uncomfortable about Chop sitting in the car. Franklin ensures he’s fully wiped off so his paws wouldn’t stain the seats or fabrics.
Prefers texting over calling.
Even after “choice C”, he finds Trevor uncomfortable to be around. He still remembers the words that Michael descried him as before he met Trevor, and it stuck with him.
Talks about Tanisha a lot to Michael and Trevor. Michael tries to warn him about settling down too early but Trevor provides decent comfort. He wants to make sure Franklin has “good loyalty” before fully committing himself to Tanisha.
Avoids communication with neighbours since he doesn’t want to seem suspicious about magically owning his big house.

How do some people hate Tanisha??? Just because she doesn't want to be with murderer bank robber criminal Franklin Clinton? Look I love him too but she's absolutely making the right decision for herself, and I sincerely hope you would do the same.

idk if this is an unpopular opinion or if this post will receive any engagement (not sure how active the gta v fandom is on this site) but i don’t like the idea franklin and tanisha end up together in gta online.
not because i don’t like tanisha, on the contrary i really like her character. she wanted a way out of the hood so she settled with a doctor, mad respect she did what she had to do.
i just don’t understand how she and franklin got to that stage? maybe if i did i would support the idea but in the main campaign she makes it abundantly clear nothing will ever happen between her and franklin again. i didn’t sense any left over feelings on tanisha’s side, it all felt like one side pining from franklin. i thought she had politely made it known that she wasn’t interested in him like that anymore and if anything franklin was overstepping.
also it doesn’t make sense because part of why they broke up was because of his involvement in crime? i know in the online campaign (something i have never played to be fair) franklin and the player are business partners so not gangbangers, however there’s still some aspect of crime involved in their business? does she know and simply not care?? does she not know at all and is their relationship based on deceit in the way michael and amanda’s was before their reunion?? tanisha and franklin both deserve better than a relationship like that, so do their kids.
i’ve seen some people say because tanisha isn’t actually seen maybe it’s somebody else called tanisha he marries but i feel like rockstar games know the implication the name tanisha brings and if they didn’t want to imply tanisha and franklin got back together they would’ve given his wife a different name yknow??

I was going to make a point about how it’s weird that Tanisha doesn’t get to wear her natural hair, Tonya doesn’t either (and on top of that gets shafted with the Ashley Butler red-40 dye job,) and the only female character with a black hairstyle is Denise - who is both plot irrelevant and basically an antagonist, which renders the detail less meaningful.
But it all made sense when I remembered that Tanisha’s main goal is to bag a guy with a legal, high paying job. Like duh. She knows what she’s doing.

Fictober - Day 26
Love/Heartbreak + 'You keep me warm' -
××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
It's a dark, cold night, as always.
Franklin was downstairs, while Lamar is upstairs in there.
Lamar is feeding Chop, giving their dog some food and playing with him.
Franklin was in their room (like usual), on the bed. He's lying on his back, staring at the ceiling. He is thinking, deep in his thoughts again.
He thought about many things, mostly about the past and present, slightly of the future too. He thinks about the heartbreak with Tanisha, his ex girlfriend. It's been almost a year. But everything was alright now, they are good and close friends with each other. Like before.
Then, he thought of Lamar, his love for him.
It made him blush, although he also gets a slight smile when thinking about the other dark-skinned male.
Franklin snapped out of it as he heard a door had opened. He looked, sat upwards. He saw that it was Lamar coming in. He has another smile and kept it while Lamar goes to him.
Lamar walked over to Frank, smiling slightly himself. He already closed the door before he headed to him. He got on that bed. He lays down, next to Franklin and leans against him.
After that, he puts his head on Franklin's shoulder and wrapped his arms around him, tightly.
Franklin didn't mind it, he smiles more. He wraps his arms around Lamar as well. His stare was on him.
There was a silence between them that was nice.
Until Lamar talked quietly.
Lamar smiled and hummed softly. "You keep me warm." He really loved it.
Franklin was blushing at that. "That's good."
Lamar realized what he said, even if he meant it, he still blushed deeply. He nodded at that, slowly.
Franklin thought that Lamar was adorable just now. He reached out and grabbed Lamar's chin with his fingers. He lifted the other male's head.
He kissed him, gently and affectionately, even lovingly. He gazed into Lamar's eyes.
Lamar kept his darkened blush, being slightly flustered. Although, he stayed there. He also stared at him, silently. Into Franklin's eyes.
They are kissing and staring at each other, for awhile, but they didn't deepen it. Both guys were blushing a reddish shade on their dark skin.
Both of them pull apart, as they panted in a quiet way. Their eyes softened, heat from each other, their breathing mixed. They're taking in their scents as well, them being sweet of cocoa butter and cinnamon, strangely enough.
Franklin holds him close again, loving it.
Lamar felt the same way. He still leaned on him a bit. In this warmth. He had a smile again, slightly shyly. He does like the closeness though. He feels sleepy, closing his eyes now, for only a second.
Franklin noticed that, smiling again.
That moonlight shined down on them and Illuminated their dark skinned bodies. Like last time. It was a nice sight to stare at. They are still gazing at each other, noticing it.
They stay like this for the rest of that night, eventually falling asleep together, peacefully.

GTA Online: Franklin, Trevor, Michael - Where they are now.
Franklin: Owns a "Celebrity Solutions" agency, still best friends with Lamar, has a wife (Tanisha) and (at least) two kids.
Michael: Is a producer in the film industry, still alive.
Trevor: Still alive..........read below lol
“That bastard Tre... uh, my best friend... he's supposed to protect me forever... then he goes all Vinewood on me... he's too important for Ron now... he's a guru... he's a life style coach... I don't know what he is... I bet he's got abs...” — Ron Jakowski in the cutscene after purchasing the Hangar.
As mentioned by Ron Jakowski at the cutscene after purchasing the Hangar in the GTA Online: Smuggler's Run DLC, Trevor has "gone Vinewood" and became a "guru" and a "lifestyle coach" in 2017, confirming that Something Sensible is not the canonical ending in Grand Theft Auto V.
In the GTA Online: The Diamond Casino & Resort DLC mission "Casino - Loose Cheng", Tao Cheng is kidnapped by some biker gang when he was going to purchase crystal meth from a dealer contact he had previously met in Sandy Shores, as mentioned by Agatha Baker and the Translator. This implies that Trevor is still a meth dealer as of 2019. Later in the mission "Casino - Strong Arm Tactics", when driving Tao and his translator to the Pacific Bluffs Country Club to meet up with Agatha Baker, Tao says "I almost got killed at this country club once already. Never again", referencing the events of The Third Way mission in Grand Theft Auto V, and confirming it as the canonical ending in GTA V.
While not directly mentioned or present, Trevor makes another appearance in GTA Online: The Cayo Perico Heist update via a salacious picture included in the Madrazo Files, during the finale cutscene of The Cayo Perico Heist, alongside Patricia Madrazo, confirming that they did have an affair together after the events of Derailed.
Although Trevor is not seen during the events of the Los Santos Tuners update, KDJ states during The Lost Contract that Chef works with "a real psycho crew", possibly referring to Trevor Philips Enterprises, meaning that the crew is still active as of 2021.
Trevor is once again mentioned in the The Contract by the F. Clinton and Partner's security guard, stating that a "crazy dude" dressed like a "hobo" barged into Franklin's office and claimed that he and Franklin used to work together. After the security guard says that Franklin isn't available, he tries to defecate on the office desk. He is also mentioned by Franklin Clinton himself, after Imani tracks down the GTA Online Protagonist's background and informed Franklin that they used to work with Trevor in 2013.

Lamar shows Franklin his own planet themed shirt, but it says "I love Uranus." Lamar grins slyly.
Franklin shakes his head. "That don't surprise me, L. Not at all."

GTA V Characters Playing The Sims
Inspired by the post that talked about Tracey playing The Sims while Michael and Amanda argued downstairs.
Michael: Plays with a premade family, and tries to juggle their lives. Attempts to steal other Sims' possessions. Doesn't understand that a Sim's cooking level is based on their experience, so kitchen fires happen a lot and one or more of his Sims dies by fire. Will have to sell a window to be able to afford pizza because that's all his Sims eat and he splurged his Simoleons on something expensive, but useless.
Franklin: LOVES the pet expansion packs and tries to make Chop into a Dog Sim. His Sims reach the top level of their career choices, and spends time making his houses look sleek but lived in. Is disappointed that cars don't exist in The Sims 4, so he prefers The Sims 3. Doesn't play with cheats because he wants to earn money by climbing the ladder. Makes a female Sim that resembles Tanisha and makes his Sim have a romantic and loving relationship with her.
Trevor: Uses the Extreme Violence and Drugs mods for TS4. Tries to kill every Sim that he can and collect gravestones. (Think CallMeKevin from YouTube.) Takes pictures of his slain Sims and puts the photos on his walls as ~art~. He makes Sims look exactly like real life people he knows and lives vicariously through them because he wants his Sims to have good relationships with others. (Is a total reflection of his actual desire to be close to people.) Definitely uses cheats.
Lamar: Bought the base game and all of the packs on Origin for full price unironically. He downloads Chop to play with on TS4 Gallery. His favorite pack is the Get Together one so he can make Sim versions of the Chamberlain Hill, Ballas, and Vagos gangs to fight each other. (Has the Extreme Violence and Drugs mods to enhance the gang activities.) He simps for the female Sims he creates and has his Sim WooHoo with them. Uses cheats for Simoleons really. Makes his Sim super popular and attractive.
Lester: Owns the entirety of The Sims franchise, even the original CD's of the game. Definitely uses mods and is a modder himself with the newer Sims games. Knows the Sims lore pretty extensively and is bit of an elitist about it. Enjoys the challenges where you leave your Sims alone for a period of time to see what happens. He loves the fact that he is in complete control over their lives.
If you have any more GTA V characters headcanons about them playing The Sims franchise, I'd love to read what you're thinking! These five guys were the easiest to flesh out.

Franklin Clinton HCs for fun and profit
He has the fewest observable sleep issues between the core three. Franklin can sleep anywhere, on floors or couches or chairs, even outside in the grass. He would never admit to this publicly, but he actually feels a lot safer sleeping next to someone else: he would crawl into bed with his grandparents a lot as a kid, and eventually Lamar. Fuck you don’t laugh.
He’s good at math and statistics, but his english and history retention are terrible, and it didn’t help that he was a very single-minded, defiant child. He got called stupid a lot growing up. His distrust for institutional authority stems from this.
This one’s more or less canon, but w/e: he has an odd relationship with social ethics. Born pre-911 to an economically unstable family, he’s not at all precious about screwing over strangers: he doesn’t pay taxes, vote or volunteer. But he’s also very conscious of the crabbucket effect in disadvantaged communities, and actively resists the idea that there are subclasses of people who it’s okay to abuse indiscriminately, no matter where it may pop up. He would not have approved of By The Book, and was left out by the others for this reason.
Lamar buys all his cologne - or rather Lamar buys himself cologne and Franklin steals it, and they’re so entrenched in this habit that it’s more or less an agreed upon gift. He gets it from all over the place, and gatekeeps the hell out of his sources: corner stores and car trunks and shady foreign websites. Left to his own devices, Franklin is a “five-in-one shampoo deodorant and toothpaste” kinda guy, so he feels more confident using Lamar’s products when he wants to feel good.
He can’t cook anything but basic frozen food. As an adult, he eats out most of the time, and before that his grandparents cooked for him. When he was a little kid living with his mom, she usually wasn’t around to make his meals, and he ate the way you’d expect an unattended child to, in that situation: chips, bagged cheese, plain bread, etc. He actually still has old scars on his hands and arms from trying to use the stove, oven and kitchen knives when he was still too young to read or write.
His taste in alcohol is light as hell, schnapps and fruit beer and sangria and such. Since it tastes like juice anyways, he can get really, really plastered without realizing it. The hangovers are legendary.
His Aunt Denise actually has a masters in physiology, and was pursuing a career in physical therapy when Franklin’s mother became embroiled in an abusive relationship and, subsequently, cocaine addiction and unplanned pregnancy before eventually dying from an overdose. Despite how devoted Denise was to her personal ambitions, the emotional fallout her sister’s slow decline inflicted on the broader family prevented her from ever leaving Forum Drive or starting a family of her own. She resents Franklin’s very existence for this reason, and projects quite a bit onto the girls in his life, commenting bitterly about how Tanisha “has more sense than to hang out with his sorry ass” and all that.
