it’s the way jiang cheng could not accept yanli and wei wuxian’s sacrifices, the way he could not fathom their selflessness because each of their actions were viewed by him through a very self-centric lens–in that, how does wei wuxian taking a stand for the remaining wens affect him, affect jiang cheng? how does yanli giving up her life for wei wuxian affect him, affect jiang cheng? it’s always about him, his feelings, his anger, his grief, his sense of abandonment. the problem here is that yeah, he loved his sister and yes, he did care for wei wuxian but what are these words worth when he could not allow them to make their own choices and respect those choices? what does it mean that he’d rather try to slash wen ning’s corpse and throw the wens under the bus because he doesn’t want wei wuxian to remain in the burial mounds and see what comes after? what does it mean that jiang cheng could not digest yanli’s sacrifice and never bothered to tell jin ling about the truth of his mother’s death, letting her son continue to hate the man she gave up her life for, out of love at that?
jiang cheng never respected what was most important to wei wuxian and clung to his idea of what he thought would be best for wei wuxian. thing is, if wei wuxian had backed out, had left the wens, in some impossible hypothetical universe––he would never be able to live with himself again. saving and supporting the wens was extremely important to wei wuxian. similarly, if yanli ever got a do-over, she would still save wei wuxian and give up her life because that is what she believed in, that is what her love for him compelled her to do. and in both instances, jiang cheng could not let go of his own reactionary emotions to their decisions to respect what these decisions represented.
he spit on both their sacrifices: let the lies about yanli’s death breed hatred for wei wuxian and led the siege to the burial mounds to kill the very people wei wuxian risked his life to protect. and for both these instances, the fandom has spoken ad nauseam about how it’s understandable for jiang cheng to feel abandoned, that he is always “left behind”. but did he ever have the courage to truly stick by them? stick by them, even in memory, even in their ideals, even in their last living and dying wishes?

I'm sure this has been beat to death by now, but my favourite aspect of Sam as a character is the fact that he truly does encapsulate one of the most pervasive themes in the game, the theme of being humane. Sorry for the really long ramble but I just wanted to get this off my chest and just genuinely commend the game for what it does with its protagonist. Be warned for spoilers for the whole game and some endings.
From the begining, Sam is shown to be an empathetic character, despite being a pseudo-silent protagonist. As different as every route can be, Sam always feels some form of very human remorse. He feels remorse over killing cursed individuals when he reflects in the mirror. He feels remorse for fucking up the ritual and damning the astronomers. He feels guilty over taking the resources of people who have become cursed, even though he knows that they won't be using them anymore. At least once per playthrough, he experiences some form of remorse towards another party.
As far as a reach as it is for me to say this, I personally saw the dialogue options that players can pick as Sam's own thoughts and the specific thoughts that you choose to pick are the thoughts that become fully realised and are added to his overall character for that playthrough. There are often a lot of dialogue options that are negative or reactionary. Yet every single time, there's at least one positive one, one where he feels empathy, one where he believes there is hope for an individual despite how bleak the situation may seem. Or at the very least he chooses to be civil and non-discriminatory towards a cursed person.
As grotesque as the game is and as twisted as the Cursed become, they're still human, they're still people even if not physically apparent. And 9 times out of 10, they still behave like people. My favourite aspect about the game is that there are some characters that seem like they're too far gone, that they only wish to hurt people and yet if kindness is extended towards them, they can still be saved. We see this with the hidden-away garage. The fish and chips shop. The Cursed are still willing to trade and salvage the situation as best as they can. They're making the most out of a shitty situation despite struggling interally with their sanity and adjusting to newly formed bodies.
Choosing to be humane at the end of the world is one of the best things about Sam's character. Nobody would hold it against him if he were to kill cursed individuals indiscriminately. There are several characters that he can befriend who have done the same like Hellen. But being given the option to negotiate, the option to talk and to extend an olive branch, he takes it. He talks to cursed individuals who are lucid, he even befriends a few like Joel. Even in the ending where he becomes a swarming mass of arms and feels overwhelmed by his new ever expanding form, even though he is so scared, he took a moment to calm himself down, pick himself up and get to work helping people. Even as a borderline Lovecraftian being, he actively chose to be the driving force for good. Even though the prior examples I listed are choices that can be made by the player, this ending proves that Sam is a genuinely good and humane person. In the 104 Gods ending, the gods still destroyed parts of humanity and even divided it further. In the Screaming Sky ending where the astronomers ascend into a unified god like entity as the Exhaulted Four, they were actively destroying the planet and killed random people in an unpredictable bloody purge. Every other instance of people being presented with this awesome change, they were destructive, unintentionally so due to insanity, but ultimately destructive. The sole exception to these realities is Sam. When he's aware of what he's become, he helps, he becomes the Saviour of Humanity. He could've been like any of the 104 Gods, start his own cult/ community, be the supreme ruler of Earth because like with the gods, who could stop him. But he didn't, and that's what truly does differentiate him. The Gods could've been lucid and with how they actively do rule over the earth in their respective zones, it appears as though they are. And yet we have Sam, a god in his own right, but is a good person (well except for the Perfect Ritual ending where he overwhelms the earth Xin Amon style but I attribute that to losing himself completely as opposed to his character's intention).
As corny as it may sound, Sam truly does choose to be kind as opposed to choosing the 'right' option of caving into fear and attacking enemies/ isolating himself. To Sam, being a kind person is not dependent on appearance, it isn't dependent on what you can personally get out of helping another person but it's about being a helper of your fellow man, regardless of everything that is happening. No matter the route, no matter the player's input, that humanity is always there and I admire that about him.

to speedily clarify because I am so inclined:
interacting with old art is completely normal and there's nothing wrong with doing that (if I had a problem with it why would it still be online). not to be specific, but art that I made 4 years ago is hardly even old… I have been on this website for nearly 10 years
'likespamming' is completely fine and normal. I don't see the reason anyone would have a problem with it
anyway there's no need to ever feel like interacting is bad somehow or that artists will strike you with lightning if they see you. especially when all you're doing is using the website in its intended way

do you think buddie is gonna happen and they did this for our closure?
No. Genuinely I don’t. If Buddie was happening the scene with Maddie would have been more explicit about it. People can playfully say it’s Buck in denial all they want but Buck said quickly and decisively that not only is he not in love with Eddie, the idea that he is pisses him off. The Final Cut would have had more hesitation to Buck’s answer of Buddie was really in the works or Buck saying he could be. Instead what he firmly said was “Its just not like that. I miss him but he’s my best friend. And then he specifically spells out that he wants to call Tommy, not Eddie. Buck’s arc is leaning so far into the direction of Tommy that people have to say he, Eddie, Ryan, Oliver, Aisha, and Tim are all lying just to make it work and I’m tired of entertaining that. Sometimes the cigar is just a cigar and sometimes the straight best friend is actually straight.
Buddie isn’t on the horizon but we can still enjoy it as a fandom if we just accept that canon isn’t a realistic expectation, otherwise the show will keep having to get more and more explicit about it and Buck was practically banging on the fourth wall in that Maddie scene.

I really want Mane to come back in uu maybe its just cause I’m a Mane enjoyer and I’m sure hes busy irl or smthn but I really, really want him to come back as a villain for honestly anyone
originally I thought Wemmbu would be the coolest to have Mane as a villain, because it would be good to see how Wemmbu has grown since the Mane training arc and have Mane either praise or ridicule Wemmbus progress. it would also seriously fuck Wemmbu up, having someone that he looked up to so much and has been more or less friends with since the prince Zam empire arc not only try to kill him but actively hate him. this could either be because Wemmbu didnt trust Mane and left him, or because someone else intervened and gave Mane a reason to kill Wemmbu (yes another hired assassin arc ik), or maybe there was something Wemmbu did on accident or offhandedly that was a personal slight to Mane. maybe Mane has bigger plans and needs Wemmbu out of the way for them, similar to Ashs view on Parrot(note! I havent finished parrots pov that might be a shit take on ash as a villain for parrot). maybe Mane wants Wemmbus mace, since i dont think he has one and its directly referenced as part of Manes fighting style and is already shown to be important to him, being the initial reason Mane decides to train Wemmbu. whatever his reason, I would love to see Mane and Wemmbus semi rocky but overall very good (for wemmbu) relationship go seriously sour. Wemmbu would be hesitant to fight him and they would both be a little too familiar with each others combat style and the insults or jabs they would exchange would be cutting.
on the other hand, Mane could also be a really good enemy for Flame. its established from Wemmbus videos that they had a relationship either before or during princezam empire, and theyve had SOME kind of problem since Mane betrayed. so Mane pretty much already has a motivation and Mane would actually get Flames attention, even without the insane levels of annoyance the toxic players had to reach before Flame considered them an issue. also it would be a really really cool way to explore Flames past, considering he was such an important antagonist for multiple s1 protags and has clearly been a major player on the server in general, even though we only get to see him in a ver specific light. but seeing Flames past relationships, obviously I’m thinking about with Mane but even with Zam or Sorrin, and seeing what they think of him now- god that could be cool. and similar to the idea with Wemmbu, Mane could be a serious threat because he knows Flame, or at least he did. Mane could reasonably be someone who would know Flame well enough to pose a serious threat, maybe Mane couldnt take him in a straight fight but if Mane got a mace or if hes playing mind games with Flame, he could use his knowledge of how Flames brain works to always stay one step ahead. this could also work with the foreshadowing of Lomedys friend and ego being Flames downfall, since Flame would assume Mane is less of a threat because he knows hes better at pvp than Mane, which Mane would use to probably lure him into a trap. Mane has been trying to i think kill Flame for a while now, so ofc hed continue with that maybe with some new weapon hes been busy getting for the past few months. maybe hes had to travel trillions of blocks to find an undestroyed trial chamber for a mace.
but also also, playing off of the idea I had while watching Wemmbus new tournament video, what if we did both? what if Mane came back to fight Flame, but because of Flame and Wemmbus friendly rivalry, he keeps running into Wemmbu too. even better, maybe the first time or first few times Wemmbu and Mane are almost avoiding each other- theyre both fighting Flame, they used to be friends, so they should work together, but it feels wrong. their opinions on him and feelings about Flame are so different and they best they can bring themselves to do is to not get in each others way. ofc, that wouldnt work for long, and at some point Mane would start trying to kill Wemmbu too, which could lead to Wemmbu deciding to put the fight with Flame on hold to deal with the much bigger and more genuine threat of Mane. the banter would be crazy, Wemmbu and Flame would be constantly arguing and butting heads, maybe to the point that one of them leaves at some point(maybe wemmbu to work with mane again). and since all three of them know each other so well, any and all comments and tactics would be incredibly personal and emotional.
I also wouldnt mind Mane being a villain for Parrot or Spoke for a completely unrelated reason, like hes trying to kill one of them and they accidentally run into Wemmbu or Flame and Mane is just like are you serious not this guy again. Maybe Spoke invades his base too, or Wifies hires Mane as a guard for Parrot(I personally dont think he will be hiring any guards or anything because he wont trust them with parrot but yk). it would be really cool for a character with history to show up somewhere that ISNT their history, like Minute showing up in Wemmbus video. if Mane showed up in Spoke or Parrots pov and either his past isnt mentioned or its only talked about indirectly(looking at minutes ‘you dont want to become the villain of your own story’ that was NOT about our purple bug </3), I would still go feral.
this ideas are combinable, I also really like the idea that Mane or anyone honestly causes problems for every protag, similar to Ash, and forces the gang together. but also what if each problem was like personal, where each of the protagonists genuinely fucking hates Mane for their own reason. in s1 Wemmbu specifically didnt really have a reason for hating Ash, he just happened to dislike someone working with Ash and it was pretty much just convenient for him to team up with Parrot and Spoke. he didnt have a lot of emotional stakes in it, it was more like Ash was causing problems for everyone and Wemmbu was coincidentally an everyone. but Mane could have personal beef with each protagonist- using the ideas I have already, Mane comes back to try to kill Flame and as a side hustle to get him rich and shit he works for the Director to keep Parrot trapped somewhere (maybe Parrot manages to get away from Wifies and Mane gets hired to track him down). While doing this, Spoke starts fucking with his base(probably after loot Wifies gave him) and Wemmbu is also trying to fight Flame at the same time. Its a lot of layers and moving pieces, but i really like it when everyone has multiple things going on at the same time and theyre all overwhelmed n shit. Parrot would be mainly dealing with Wifies and Mane would just be someone Wifies hired, Spoke would just be being spoke, Wemmbu could be trying to balance his morals and pick between two people he hates, and Flame kind of gets the short end of it all with Mane and Wemmbu giving him grief.
I just want a serious villain with emotional baggage guys I love uu but I’m so sick of faceless underdeveloped unimportant villains

everyone can have their own headcanons that are fun to them etc. etc. and the gomens tv show characters are not the same as their book counterparts, and it is entirely reasonable to extrapolate from the canon given in the show etc. etc.
HOWEVER, since gos2 did NOT in fact give crowley a snack, I do feel the need to tap the sign:
Tumblr media

BOOK!SNAKE THINKS EATING A HEAVY MEAL AND HAVING A NAP ABOUT IT IS ONE OF THE PLEASURES OF THE WORLD
If this must be reconciled with him eating nothing in the tv show, might I suggest snakeish preference of large and infrequent meals and little to nothing in between, or any other interpretation of your choosing
I just think this is important to keep in mind, thank you for your time

So do you like bugs or nah?
I LOVE BUGS!! a lot!! i just went on a big long rambling post yesterday about all my favorite characterizations i like about him and that he’s tied for being in my top 5 favorite LT characters ever. believe it or not one of my driving forces of getting into LT was for him specifically
but i just don’t have very much to say about him! yet! he sneaks up on me, my Bugs Thoughts And Analyses come to me when i’m actually reviewing his shorts. he’s coy
the thing about me is that Daffy and Porky are an exception in my enjoyment of LT. i don’t really care AS MUCH for most of the characters. i’m so much more into the shorts for the people behind it and the production behind it rather than the characters, and this is probably why i’m so picky or disenfranchised with a lot of modern LT stuff. i care more about how, say, Friz Freleng portrays Bugs or Bob McKimson portrays Bugs than Bugs himself. i care more about what McKimson’s Sylvester represents about his cartoons and directorial voice, compared to Freleng’s Sylvester and what that says, than Sylvester himself as a character. so much of my interest in LT is completely dominated by its place in animation history and what it means about the medium of animation, what it says about the directors, etc, etc. the characters are just incidental to that. Daffy and Porky have won out as the single exceptions, and they also have the benefit of having been rotated around all the directors, so it hits all my LT niches in one
just because i don’t post as much about Bugs doesn’t mean i don’t like him!! rather, i’d rather let the Bugs People do their thing and claim him than me tread on their turf! he’s already so popular and has a bunch of people who will post art and analyses of him, i’m sure… i’ll focus my energies on characters like Porky who get very little love or characters like Daffy who are obnoxiously misunderstood (Porky too.) i’ll get there! trust me i love Bugs and while he’s lower in my top 5 of characters, he’s probably the character i have the most investment in besides Daffy and Porky. this isn’t the first time i’ve been asked this and it makes me sad like noooo 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

god I love the existence of dolorianism in disco elysium and I love love LOVE when fic writers use it as a way to hit all the characters with the religious guilt beam. just the idea that on top of all their other problems, every single mental and physical and existential crisis you could possibly have, they've ALSO all got fucking. catholic guilt. it's just so fucking funny to me

*laughing and thinking about your top ten and X au* but no it’d be really funny if later on like Lin Ling comes along (maybe Nice is still alive but taking a hero break instead since he had civilian X to focus on instead of depression idk) and immediately clocks onto the fact that X and civilian X are the same person and thinks the others are joking at first as like a massive inside joke then when he realizes as a once former wage slave himself he helps out X instead in both capacities
oooh i have a post in my drafts about this somewhere hold on
