file : interesting creatures (#3): tameryraptor markgrafi
lowercase intended
the tameryraptor markgrafi is a predatory dinosaur species that was discovered in early April of 1914, but was utterly, entirely misclassified as a previously discovered member of the carcharodontisauridae family, discovered in 1756, for just shy of 111 years. (discovered in 1756, the carcha family was originally named the megalosaurus saharicus, and the name was changed in 1831 by a man named ernst stromer.)
what was thought to be the carcharodontosaur specimen was discovered in 1914, in the bahariya formation from a locality found in the northern section of egypt's bahariya oasis. the specimen took many years to arrive in germany, where it was placed on display in a museum. due to political tension during world war ii between the german empire and egypt, which was then owned by britain, the specimen was destroyed.
on january 14th, 2025, it was released that this specimen had actually come from the tameryraptor markgrafi, essentially a different family of dinosaurs. before the specimen was destroyed it contained skull fragments, three cervical and one caudal vertebrae, a manual ungual, the left fibula, both of the dinosaur's femora, teeth, and pieces of ischium and pubis bones. an endocast of the braincase, which reportedly survived can also be located in berlin.
images taken of the fossils before they were destroyed showed that there was a significant difference between what we recently found to be the tameryraptor and more recent carcharodontosaurus specimens found in morocco, for example. this means that stromer's classification was incorrect, and has now been reclassified as a predatory raptor species, although this may change as studies continue. dr. oliver rauhut, senior author of the study, stated that the tameryraptor markgrafi was close to 33 feet long, had a prominent nasal horn similar to the ceratosaurus, and had nearly perfectly symmetrical teeth, unlike most carcharodontosauridae discovered. the tameryraptor has been foted to north african and south americasian group of dinosaurs called the metriocanthosaurs.
the dinosaur family's generic name, tameryraptor, combines an informal name meaning "beloved land" that the ancient egyptians gave their country (ta-mery), and the latin word "raptor," which means thief. the specific name, markgrafi, is simply an instance of humankind so commonly naming shit after themselves. the tameryraptor markgrafi is currently classified as a smaller, more recently discovered member of the carcharodontosaurid family.

file : interesting creatures (#4): 12 dinosaur fun facts !
heavily randomly listed; lowercase intended.
#1: the stegosaurus stenops (stegosaurus) and the tyrannosaurus rex (t. rex) lived in completely different time periods. the stegosaurus stenops lived in the late jurassic period... the tyrannosaurus rex didn't exist until the late cretaceous period. they were segregated by tens of millions of years, and never at any point in time did they coexist.
#2: all living birds are something called maniraptoran dinosaurs. the name "maniraptora" means "hand grabbers." maniraptora are a clade of coelurosaurian dinosaurs including birds and non-avian dinosaurs not closely related to or not at all related to ornithomimids. the clade includes avialae, dromaeosauridae (raptors), troodontidae, oviraptorosauria, and therizinosauria (therizinosaurs).
#3: dinosaurs have currently only been extinct for 26% of the total time that they were the dominant fauna on the planet. they appeared about 252 million years ago and have only been extinct for almost 66 million years.
#4: the smallest dinosaur egg ever discovered was 2.9 centimeters long; it was the smallest egg in a nest that belongs to an egg classification called minioolithus ganzhouensis. the eggs were discovered in 2022 in ganzhou, china; i couldn't find out what dinosaur laid the eggs.
#5: the largest dinosaur egg ever discovered was over 24 centimeters long; it belonged to a caenagnathid oviraptorosaur called the beibeilong sinensis, a species of giant oviraptors.
#6: troodon have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any dinosaur ever discovered, and have pretty much been confirmed to have had steroscopic vision, which is the ability to perceive depth and three-dimensional information by combining slightly different images received from each eye. this is the type of vision human beings have, which suggests that troodon may have been nearly as intelligent as humans.
#7: there's a dinosaur whose name has 3 less letters than are in the english alphabet- the alphabet has 26; the dinosaur stands at 23. the dinosaur who takes this blue ribbon is the micropachycephalosaurus.
#8: there is a quite substantial theory that the uk holds the key to the discovery of the chronological origin of dinosaurs. the oldest dinosaur specimen ever discovered is a saltopus elginensis specimen dating back 245 million years.
#9: there are pterosaurs that may have been larger than the quetzalcouatlus northropi. two of these include the arambourgiania, which lived 72.1 million years ago in the late cretaceous period, and the hatzegopteryx thambema.
#10: yes, there is a fucking difference between pliosaurs and plesiousaurs. the largest known plesiosaur is the elasmosaurus platyurus, and the largest known pliosaur is the kronosaurus queenslandicus.
#11: the megalosaurus was the first dinosaur to be named "saurus." by reverend william buckland in 1824.
#12: the first dinosaur ever discovered in america was made 30 years later in 1854, by ferdinand vandiveer hayden. it was a collection of teeth that were identified 2 years later as troodon, trachodon and deinodon specimens.
