Review: Tally Spear’s new single ‘Imposter’ is a dark electronic-pop, emo-rock fusion of sounds wrapped up in an anthemic narrative of feeling lost in life
London-based LGBTQ+ artist Tally Spear has been following her own musical path since only twelve, performing publicly and writing of mental health and coming of age narratives in each of her releases. Tally’s newest single ‘Imposter’ is a fiery introduction to her discography of hard-hitting tunes, as she’s without a doubt a firecracker to keep an eye on.
Without wasting a moment, ‘Imposter’ right away clashes into its heart-thumping soundscape from pressing play, a concoction of dark electronic pop, emo-rock and pop-punk stylings made to pulsate through your brain at full force. As the first verse dominates through an undertone of quickly strummed electric guitar and steadily pounding electronic beats, Tally sets the pacing for rising tensions to build, feeling like quite the calm before the storm. The pre-chorus only further moulds upon that foundation with the gritty electronic guitar coming more into view and the spiking beats look to get under your skin. It all finally kicks off in the choruses’ highly anticipated explosion though, with aggressively strummed guitar, volatile drum clashes and Tally’s angsty, in-your-face vocal performance that picks up from the verses’ more clean, soaring lines. The bridge absolutely peaks in an instrumentally melting high with electronic stutters, a shredding guitar solo and continually slamming drums that don’t for a second let you do anything other than head-bang furiously along. As the track ebbs and flows throughout from high to low, ‘Imposter’ will have you completely hooked on every single twist and turn, raising your adrenaline and getting your blood pumping to the max.
Mixed with her thunderous sound, ‘Imposter’ is just as lyrically ferocious with Tally dominantly opening up about some of her most personal struggles, working through her experiences with imposter syndrome just in life itself. Watching on the sidelines as everyone seems to have it all figured out, Tally sings ‘I don’t know what I’m doing, how long can I keep making it up?’ , seeking direction and answers while everyone around her continues making strides forward. Continuing with the line ‘don’t know which way to move in or how to help myself’, the track almost pleads for guidance as Tally feels she should know what she’s doing in adulthood, but instead feels just as lost as ever. Youthful in her mind, the lyrics reveal ‘I’m getting older but I never seem to grow up’ , weighed down by the responsibilities and expectations of getting older while being no closer to figuring out where she’s headed. With others progressing through their careers and relationships, Tally can’t help but believe she should be making the same progressions, caught up by the small snippets of what everyone chooses to share about their lives and wondering why she isn’t in the same place: ‘think I should know what I want by now.’ Through every deeply revealing line, ‘Imposter’ makes it clear that this is an anthem for everyone who’s still carving their own path and stumbling through life blindly, taking it at their own pacing regardless of how much of an outsider it leaves them feeling against the masses. But really, everyone is a little lost on their journey, and ‘Imposter’ is that reminder that even when you’re feeling alone there are others just as confused on their own directions too.
Check out ‘Imposter’ here to appreciate the bombastic soundscape and hard-hitting lyricism Tally has penned!

Yo London! If you've been planning to catch me & my Juha crew live, THIS is the event you wanna go to: https://www.facebook.com/events/191980001345059/ - It's a benefit for @friendanimalrescue at the awesome @karameln22, and the animals will thank you. And both we and the event organisers would adore if you BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE, cuz so we wanna get a sense of who might be-comin'. And IF YOU SHARE THIS and the event as well, we'll kiss your human feet. I haven't run the latter offer by my bandmates Jane and Fernando, but they can be convinced.
