A-T-3 080 James Ingram - Yah Mo B There (John "Jellybean" Benitez 12'' Remix)
Picking up from where I left my short history of reissue labels in the age of Record Shop Day (which are all reissues in some form or other) and back catalogues (legacy records) making up 75% of all US album sales
In 1990 CBS brought back it’s Legacy label, CBS was acquired by Sony the following year and Legacy serves as the reissue label for Sony and all its labels
1991 Beechwood music launched it’s highly successful Mastercuts series, their promise “Mastercuts will cover all areas of music and endeavour to provide a higher standard of track listings, quality music and packaging. Conceived and compiled with love by Ian Dewhirst.” The first three in the Mastercuts series were:
Classic Mix Mastercuts volume 1
Classic Jazz-Funk Mastercuts volume 1
Classic Mellow Mastercuts volume 1
They were all compiled by northern soul dj Ian Dewhirst but as the catalogue grew other djs were brought in, Greg Wilson did Classic Electro, Dave Lee Classic Disco, Paul "Trouble" Anderson Classic House Volume 2, Dez Parkes Classic Rare Groove Volume 2, and on and on. The selections crossed over with Street Sounds, especially the Street Sounds Anthems series but the sleeve notes were a little better and they were spread over 2xLP, this was reflected in the price. I remember Mastercuts being more expensive compilations. With the success of Mastercuts, Beechwood would reissue Street Sounds Anthems series in the mid 1990s. Beechwood acted as distributed for BBE and Ian Dewhirst would become a record exec working for reissue labels S12, Suss’d, and Harmless
Blue Note’s Blue Break Beat series began in 1992, the quality of the package had improved with extensive sleeve notes thanks to being compiled by Dean Rudland and Eddie Piller of Acid Jazz Records and coming from mind of Giles Peterson (BGP, Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud) The popularity of the compilations led to reissues of the Blue Note street funk albums by Donald Byrd, Grant Green, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jimmy McGriff et al
Polydor parent PolyGram (Polydor and Phonogram) launch its Chronicles series in 1992 to issue anthologies and expanded reissues like Yes We Can ...And Then Some by Lee Dorsey. Funk Essentials was an offshoot of Chronicles, the Parliament, Kool And The Gang, Barry White, Gap Band anthologies are all excellent as they often included rarer, funkier tracks and extended and instrumental mixes. Chronicles would become a label in its own right handling reissues for all labels under the Universal Music umbrella, like Motown Deluxe Editions
1992 also saw the record shop Sounds Of The Universe reissue 1974 soul-jazz album Fresh Out by Eddie Russ on their new label Soul Jazz. Soul Jazz would go above and beyond when it came to sleeve notes, sometimes this would extend to a book and film, they set the standard
The following year Blood & Fire would launch their reissue and anthology label. Blood & Fire was loved for it’s high quality releases, great packaging, great sleeve notes, and great selections. Each Blood & Fire released was a premium product
James Ingram - Yah Mo B There (John "Jellybean" Benitez 12'' Remix) is track 1 on the first Mastercuts compilation, Classic Mix. This classic mix is by John "Jellybean" Benitez (A-T-2 123 A-T-2 283 A-T-3 039) and Yah Mo B There was written by Rod Temperton, Quincy Jones, Michael McDonald, and James Ingram, with Quincy Jones producing

Blustery
The girls and I were able to get out for a wonderful visit with my older brother today. We had a fantastic time, and we got a tour of their yard, including the hundreds of new trees they planted!
Gotta love having a big enough yard to be able to do something like that. 😀

“Bob Dylan Dream”, Craft foam and colored burlap mosaic, 2017
Continuing on in my mosaic theme of late…
I had purchased more craft foam and some sheets of colored burlap from the dollar store. I had a canvas covered in black gesso all ready to go. I had a new jar of Modge Podge. All I needed was an idea.
And nothing. Nada. Zip. Nothing came to me. Nothing for about two or three weeks.
It’s like that sometimes for me. Maybe it’s that way for you, too – whatever your form of expression may be.  I’ll wait for that elusive muse. Often the wait drives me crazy. But I know better than to force something. When I do, my heart’s not in it.
This time around, as I was waiting, all it took was a glance at the Bob Dylan book of lyrics setting next to my favorite chair in the living room. I had been paging through it, using it as a reference for last Sunday’s God Quote (Day 141). I put it down and looked at the iconic photo of the 1965/66 Dylan from the Highway 61-era.
Boom! There it was. I had my inspiration. I was hoping to create a painting per month in 2017 in honor of the artists who have inspired me. We’re five months in and I’ve only done two. Sigh… But here was my chance to do up some artwork in honor of one of my favorite musicians all time. Not a painting, however, but what the hell? Art is about breaking your own rules too.
I wanted it to be more than a portrait; something that reflected the artist and his art. Dylan has always been an enigma. I can’t remember who said it but my favorite quote about him goes something like, “Dylan has so many sides to him, he’s round.” It should be something that reflects his status as the most frustratingly impossible-to-pin-down singer-songwriter in rock history. I also wanted to include some words because, well, Dylan without words is like Ansel Adams without film for his camera.
But what words? The man has written thousands and thousands of words. I didn’t want it to be the cliche Dylan lyric. Nothing from “Blowin’ in the Wind” or “Like a Rolling Stone” or “Tangled Up in Blue”. So I started paging through that book of lyrics to find inspiration.
It didn’t take me long to come across a line that seemed to work well with what I knew was going to be a trippy portrait. It comes at the end of one of his “talking blues” songs from early on in his career, from his 1962 album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. The song is “Talkin’ World War III Blues” and it is freakin’ hilarious. Here is the section of lyrics from that song where I found my quote for the mosaic:
Well, now time passed and now it seems/ Everybody’s having them dreams/Everybody sees themselves/Walkin’ around with no one else/Half of the people can be part right all of the time/Some of the people can be all right part of the time/But all of the people can’t be all right all of the time/I think Abraham Lincoln said that/”I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours”/I said that
So I had it all now. The materials, the inspiration, the image, the words. Below are a few photos of the process. At the end, I had a wildly colorful, puzzle-like portrait befitting the complicated man simply known as Bob.
A Year of Creating Dangerously, Day 143: Bob Dylan Dream Continuing on in my mosaic theme of late... I had purchased more craft foam and some sheets of colored burlap from the dollar store.

It was a rather cold day today, but peaceful.  At least for us.  From what I’ve heard, two more homes were lost in yesterday’s fire to the North of us.  At this point, I know nothing more.  The province’s website that is supposed to have an up-to-date interactive map of current fires has not been much help.  If didn’t have either of the local fires on there at all.  I’ve seen others comment on the site’s lack of updating, as they’ve had to turn to social media to keep on top of the fire situation.
We never got the predicted showers, but at least with the reduced wind and colder temperatures, the fire risk has dropped a bit.
It was another day of the birds, outside.  I think it might be a while before the deer start coming back.
Oh, my.  As I was inserting the above photos, I heard another thump at the dining room window.  I went outside and found a little junco on the ground.  My younger daughter came out to hold on to it, to keep it safe from the cats, until it was ready to fly away on its own.  I’m hearing her come back inside right now, so it must be gone.
This is the second junco we’ve tended to after it hit the dining room window, just today.  The earlier one took quite a bit longer to recover.
Tumblr media
Here is the female, dark eyed junco from earlier today, in my daughter’s hands.  It was very calm about being held, too.
Tumblr media
It started to stand itself up and look around after a minute or so.  Note its bent under foot.  The other foot was like that, too.  No damage, it turned out.  It seems that it just wasn’t aware of it, quite yet.
Tumblr media
When it finally did start to flutter away, it just moved over to my daughter’s arm.  And immediately pooped on her! 😀
It seemed fully aware at this point, looking around and watching us closely, but content to stay on her arm for several minutes more.
Tumblr media
After a while, it flew off to the bench seat on the platform to our old clothes line.  There was a cat about, though, so I came over to encourage it away.  It moved to this bush and stayed there for another minute or so before finally flying away, none the worse for the experience.
While it’s unfortunate so many birds are hitting our window hard enough to stun themselves, it is so amazing to be able to hold them and watch over them until they can fly away on their own.  They seem to like the warmth of our hands as they recover, too.
Pretty awesome!

Blue for You
Alas, no pictures of deer today.  I did see one cautiously making its way towards the house, just a few minutes ago, but it saw me move in the window and dashed right off.
Sadness.
I did, however, manage to get a photo of a blue jay today.  For the past few weeks, even if I’ve been at the window, watching them for a while, the moment I get behind the camera, they all fly off!
Tumblr media
This morning, I…
