This beta training sequence always has me questioning what Derek learned from Talia. I can definitely imagine her having Laura, Cora and Derek attack her to learn how to fight.

And it's a much more playful, positive thing, I think.

But then the way Derek is "I'm teaching you how to survive" makes me think about how often Derek has seen everyone he knows dies.

He's so out of his depth, but in his own way he's trying.

Talia Hale deserved more. More backstory, more flashback, more representation, more respect. The whole Hale lineage did.

I just recently rewatched the Witcher and WOLF WITCHER DEREK HALE and jaskier coded Stiles. I absolutely love the witcher and teen wolf and their ideas kinda overlap.

Geralt and Derek have to same character dynamic —Grumpy, I could kill you on sight, only soft for one person, enough gulit in their shoulders to kill atlas. But in the end a good person who wants to be good, (Derek wanting to be a good alpha, Geralt wanting to be a knight)

Stiles and jaskier have the same coded character, uses a mask to hide the real him in public, cunning and smart, sarcastic little shits, someone who has an infinite patience for a grumpy man.

I’m going to go a little off script because although derek and stiles fit the mold of the character archetypes they would have different backgrounds/motives

So for Derek I’m picturing:

maybe he was from a rich family that were killed by the Argents (Kate 🤢) and he goes to Kaer Morhen (the wolf school) and goes through the trails. Boys his age don’t really survive the trails so the fact that he did made him the strongest to survive so they put him through the trails again making him the “alpha”. The hale pack Erica, Boyd, and Issac were also from the wolf school. He later gets called “the butcher” after he finds Kate later on and kills he and a few knights.

Or

He was dropped off at the wolf school as a child and Talia takes him under her wing as he goes through the mutagen’s that turn him into a Witcher. Kate is one of the witches that are working on the boys, she manipulated him and uses him to sack Kaer Morhen leading to the death of most of the hale pack. Peter goes feral and he is forced to put him down leading to the nickname butcher.

For Stiles there are many different option one could go with because although he shares many traits with jaskier I cannot see him as a bard. Maybe he’s also a Witcher from the cat school who ends up traveling with Derek after it gets a little to dangerous to as a lone Witcher.

Maybe he’s a traveling healer/herbalist/apothecary who keeps running into Derek and healing him. He graduated from Oxford, and helped smuggle out elves into safer locations(spy stiles). Maybe Derek trusts him to save him because stiles smuggled him out of an argent jail cell, a move that could have cost Stiles his life. So as a thank you Derek swears to help protect him in times of need (overprotective bodyguard Derek, my beloved). Stiles allowing Derek to play out his knight fantasy by protecting him.

Or maybe Stiles is a spark, he studied at one of the main mage school like Aretuza, and joined the brotherhood. While there he finds a conspiracy to create new Witcher loyal to the crown and the mage schools. One of the trails, Scott. So he grabs Scott and betrays the brotherhood, leading him to seek out Derek to help. Together with the hale pack the take down the corrupt leader and the argents.

There are so many options but the potential is so amazing!! Derek who hates everyone but stiles. The soft intimacy of their interactions. Stiles healing Derek in soft candlelight, light touches on his skin as not to overwhelm him. Derek being surround by stiles scent, a safe place to rest.

Lurker now follower here, hi hi, I love your blog and all your insights and thoughts on Teen Wolf and Sterek!! I just finished a rewatch and then immediately started over from the beginning because I am Unwell 😂😂😂

I’m on episode one and I gotta say it’s pretty hilarious how Stiles immediately recognizes Derek. Like, I can only imagine how obsessed he was with the fire and the Hale family, and now Derek is back!!

I don’t really have more coherent thoughts on this, just my brain going BRRRRR so yea lol 😂😂

i know we all joke about how stiles immediately knows it's derek hale that he and scott run into because it is funny. like stiles baby. honey. the signs were there.

i've always gotten the impression the fire is something stiles remembers very, very well.

the hale fire changed beacon hills. the hales had been there since the town's foundation. they were a well off, prominent family. there was reason to suspect arson. multiple children died and the only known survivors were two barely adult children and a severely burned, comatose man.

laura and derek were high schoolers. cora was eleven years old and presumed dead.

we're told the only thing left recognizable of talia hale were her claws.

it's the definition of a tragedy.

not to think of the supernatural repercussions to the vacuum left behind.

stiles would've been about 10 when the fire occurred which is young but old enough to understand the severity of such an event. especially as the child of the sheriff.

he probably saw how it weighed on his father and had a healthy dose of morbid curiosity. he may have even have knew cora hale in that passive way you know other kids in your school even if you don't know them personally. one day there and the next dead. for someone like stiles who gets hyper-focused on things and has a lot of anxiety stemming from the death of his mother i can easily imagine how his mind didn't let it go.

meeting derek in person created a hyperfixation so intense and so unhinged it led to him recognizing teen derek hale at 50 paces or less in a mexican desert several years later.

as he got to know derek he unlocked the layered tragic backstory stiles really became derek's secret keeper.

and it is only stiles that gets these pieces of the puzzle that is derek hale. he's the one who goes through the hale fire files, he's the one who pieced together that kate argent preyed on a young derek and he knows about paige.

i find it interesting choice to have only stiles know these things about derek. scott never learns of these things that could possibly make him more empathetic towards derek. the writers don't use it that way.

especially because stiles learning these things never goes anywhere overt. it's all in the subtext of the relationship between derek and stiles.

like, stiles learns about paige and he does nothing with this information but we do see him with tears in his eyes over it. he doesn't ever learn that paige's death gave power to the nemeton either. jennifer only tells derek that.

he knows all of this about derek and never tells anyone. he only ever alludes to knowing about kate one time and it's in the overlooked when he gets in derek's face. i'm unsure derek's even aware stiles knows about paige. stiles carries all these secrets about derek and he never uses it against him. instead he continues to keep coming back again and again and again for derek.

more importantly he understands derek and what is love but the mortifying ordeal of being known.

that all said stiles is absolutely unhinged about derek and derek does nothing to curb this by the way. if it bothered him he'd stop it but they are freak4freak so derek probably finds it charming even if he puts up a few token protests just to bait stiles.

BIOGRAPHY

As a born Beta Werewolf in the centuries-old Hale Pack, Michael grew up knowing about the supernatural and embracing his lycanthropy. However, after the majority of his family was killed in a house fire set by Kate Argent and her co-conspirators when he was in his early teens, Michael, Derek, and their sister Laura fled to New York for several years before they were all lured back home in late 2010 or early 2011.

Shortly afterward, Laura was murdered in order for her killer to steal her Alpha powers, forcing Derek and Michael to track and battle against this mysterious and vengeful new Alpha, only to learn that it was actually their uncle Peter Hale, who sought to create a new pack with which to get revenge on those who orchestrated the Hale House Fire. Upon learning that Peter's killing of Laura was premeditated and not an accident like he claimed, Derek and Michael teamed up with Peter's first Beta, Scott McCall and his friends, along with Hunters Allison, Cooper and Chris Argent, to kill him.

finally rewatching the first season of teen wolf and highkey falling in platonic love with derek stinking hale

i liked him before

heck my best friend is obsessed with him 

but y’all this man 

this man is hurting so much this first season 

like it’s easy to make fun of him because he’s cryptic and weird and does that thing where he shows up randomly and just stands and stares 

but underneath that odd, tough persona he puts out is a man who has been forced to come back to the town where his family was murdered because of the loss of yet ANOTHER family member 

he has to bury his sister, the one he was at school with the rest of the Hales died 

he has to follow laura’s trail to beacon hills and then find her dead in the woods by another werewolf’s hand 

and despite the craziness that goes on he still takes the time to give her a proper burial on their family’s land 

he gives her a grave site surrounded by wolfsbane (a plant that would have affected him the moment he started touching it) so that her body would be protected from the alpha should he decide to come back for it and so that she could be buried as a wolf, as was her heritage and right as talia’s eldest child

and THEN 

he has to deal with help scott come to terms with his powers and the fact that the alpha is trying to kill him despite having literally no experience teaching another werewolf and having not been around other werewolves for literally six years 

AND THEN 

the argents pull up into town and the literal devil herself kate literally shoots to kill and nearly succeeds in taking him out, invades what’s left of his family’s home with her stupid cronies, toys with him, and then tries to kill him again 

not to MENTION the sheer number of bad memories her mere presence would have brought up 

OH AND ALSO 

he takes scott to visit peter and you can just see in his face how much he misses his family 

like that’s his uncle 

you know they were buddies when derek was growing up 

heck they’re not even that far apart in age they were probably best friends since derek doesn’t have any brothers 

and then derek’s girlfriend betrayed them and killed his family and put peter into a coma and you can see on his face that he believes it’s his fault 

and like 

this is just??? the first five episodes??? 

and this man STILL manages to be gentle and speak softly and care about other people and give up his alpha status for his sister and hang around to help scott figure things out after they kill peter and i just --

number two, what if brett and derek are related? brett said that satomi took in him and his sister after his family died, and satomi knew talia from before the fire. would it be that impossible if satomi took them in and maybe changed their last names? brett and derek never got to officially meet, and maybe satomi would have known but idk, is that insane?

Friday - Most self-indulgent fic you've ever written?

I have so many self-indulgent WIPs, but in terms of fics that I've actually posted, I think that my most self-indulgent and requested by absolutely nobody one is Prayer For the Dying. It's only 1.5k works but I was rewatching season 5 of The Vampire Diaries and found it funny when Bonnie was trying to set up Elena with Luke, but of course, Elena responded, "I think Damon's more his type" and Bonnie just paused, and said, "... They'd be cute, too" and I HAD to do something with that!! So, short Damon/Luke fic based on the episode of the same title because Angst. But also don't be kind to it, it will come back, because who asked for seven year old Elena freeing Enzo from her dad's basement? Absolutely no one except my brain.

Yes! On ao3, someone had commented and asked if I could write a specific fic idea - Long story short, it was a Teen Wolf AU where Stiles hadn't grown up in Beacon Hills, but moved there with his mom and dad when Claudia started getting sick, and he meets Scott the day after Peter bites him, and I'm pretty sure that the Hales are still alive and Talia ends up biting Claudia. I only did one chapter, unfortunately, but I plan on going back and rewriting/continuing it because I do love the concept!

A/N: TW: Mentions of sexual assault, abuse, rape. Soooo, I know Teen Wolf is like 6 years old (maybe less since season three came out later) but I just barely now came across a lot of .... tea... about Jeff Davis and the controversy he stirred up about Dennifer? So, yeah I’ve noticed he treated Derek like shit in the series. Actually a whole bunch of characters that deserved better. Plus there was a lot of queerbaiting and a lot of implied romantic relationships/feelings between adults and literal high schoolers and ugh let’s not mention the lowkey xxx scenes between a lot of the characters that were there just because. But one that really stuck to me  was the whole Jennifer Blake ‘psychologically and sexually abused’ Derek. So apparently (and also confirmed by Jeff Davis but I can’t seem to find the link to the article anywhere) Jennifer Blake used Darach magic on Derek to have him trust her and in the scene where they are intimate that was also her using magic because she was healing him and tricking him in to thinking love was making him heal faster. And then she completely 180ed on him when it was time for her to carry out her plan. I rewatched it and it’s hard for me to see it any other way especially since the WRITER confirmed it himself. So, if you were rooting for Dennifer in these next chapters, I’m sorry that’s not happening. I love all of the actors that were in the show, honestly, with all my heart but if I knew JD was such a trash bag and treated them horribly I never would’ve started watching Teen Wolf again. And yes I spent way too much time in the anti Jeff Davis tag.

Beacon Hills Preserve

The trap you set up for Erica worked perfectly. Thanks to Peter becoming the bait. He lead her to a small clearing in the woods just miles from the edge of the city.

Peter watched Erica, nervously. She hadn’t charged at him, yet, but she had her eyes trained on him. He was keeping still, careful not to give her a reason to attack him.

He quickly glanced up at the trees; he didn’t see you. He looked to the bushes; again he didn’t see you. He looked back at Erica nervously.

Erica lowered herself slightly, growling at Peter. Peter knew what that meant; she was getting ready to pounce.

Peter breathed quickly, adrenaline coursing through his body now. “Fuck it.” He muttered. “Come on!”

Erica snarled at him, and he braced himself for the impact as she ran at him. Peter caught her but was forced to the ground by the force. Erica raised her arms and he grabbed both her wrists before she could claw at him.

“Y/N!!!” He yelled. Erica snapped at him, getting closer to biting off a chunk of his face.

She suddenly stopped moving and went limp. Peter threw her off of him and stood up quickly. He looked down at her then at you.

You were holding a medium sized log and you were grinning at him. “Great work, Peter.” You teased him.

“Right.” He drawled. He started wiping off the leaves and dirt off of himself. “We caught one. Now what?”

“Now you—,” you paused, feeling a slight buzzing your head. “What is that?”

There was a faint, trilling sound echoing in the woods. It was far away, but with your hearing you could make out what it was.

“Is that—?” Peter didn’t finish his question.

“Argent.” You answered. “He’s actually helping.”

“Great, you don’t need me then.” He began walking off.

“No, I’m not done with you yet.” You grabbed the back of his coat and pulled him back. “Take Erica back to the loft. Chain her up if you have to but don’t let her out of your sight!”

Peter groaned and rolled his eyes like a child.

“I’m going to follow Argent’s emitters. Shouldn’t be too hard to catch the other two now.” You walked off in the direction the emitters were coming from.

“You can’t save them all!” Peter yelled to you. He lifted Erica up and tossed her on his shoulder. “You and Scott will soon come to learn that.”

Beacon Hills High School

You met Argent and Scott at the front of the school. You had gotten there before the betas, but you all knew they were coming. They filled you in on their plan. You were going to trap them in the boiler room at the high school until morning.

You were paired up with Derek. You were. It’s going to lead Cora and Boyd to the boiler room to lock them in.

You and Derek stood at opposite sides of the hallway, till facing each other. He was acting strange. He was too quiet.

“Are you ok?” You asked him, leaning off the lockers.

 “Peter doesn’t think we can catch them.” Derek suddenly spoke. “He said this is all part of Deucalion’s plan. If I don’t kill them— if this doesn’t work—.”

  “This is going to work. I mean, we caught Erica.” You approached him and grabbed his hands. You gave them a gentle squeeze but he refused to look at you. 

“Argent is helping us now. It’ll be easy.”

 “I don’t trust Argent.” He cut you off, pulling his hands from your grasp.

 “Do you trust me?” That made him look at you now.

He furrowed his brows in confusion like you had just asked him an impossible question he couldn’t answer. “What?”

 “Do you trust me?” You asked again. 

Silence.

You clicked your tongue. “I didn’t lie to you, Derek. I was just trying to protect you. I hope you know that.” You took a step back. You were now hurt that Derek didn’t trust you.

“I do.” He finally replied. “I do trust you. But I’m the alpha, I should be protecting you. And the others.”

“You will. You are.” You gave him a small smile in which he returned one of his own.

A small glowing ball of light crossing in front of you and Derek caught your eye.

 “What is it?” Derek asked.

You startled him by swiping at the air to catch it. 

“A firefly?” 

  “It can’t be. The species native to California aren’t bioluminescent.” You opened your palm to reveal the bug but instead a cloud of black smoke erupted from your palm. “And I don’t know of any fireflies that explode like that.”

  “We have a bigger problem.” He said, turning and taking a few steps towards the door. “They’re here.”

Boyd and Cora could be heard panting from a distance as they reached closer to the doors of the school.

They stopped at the open doors.They eyed you and Derek for a second and then jumped up on to the roof of the school.

Derek frowned. He looked up at the ceiling tracking the sounds of the footsteps above. “Dammit,” he muttered under his breath as the sound disappeared.

“What do we do now?”

“We ask Argent.” Derek rushed out of the school.

You followed after him, only stopping when you heard a classroom door close somewhere in the building.

You turned your head back slowly, blocking out all other sounds and focusing your hearing to confirm your suspicion.

Heels clicking across the tile echoed in the distance. There was definitely someone else in the building.

 “Oh, you’ve got to be shitting me.” You groaned.

You walked further inside the school building and followed the sound. Down the stairs. Further down. Leading you straight to the boiler room. 

“Why?” You whined to yourself.

You opened the door to the boiler room and entered. You walked further back in to the room. You couldn’t pick up a scent, there was a noise coming from what looked like the supply area.

They were certainly in here. You caught a flash of black long hair in the corner of the supply room. You walked inside closer; a female teacher was grabbing more supplies from the bottom shelves.

She stood up and turned, startled by your presence that she almost dropped the supplies in her hands.

You both turned your heads at the sudden creaking sound of the boiler room door opening. You held a finger up to your lips and slowly backed out away from her. As you exited, you closed the gate door. As a precaution you clicked the clock shut. 

 The loud slam echoed, followed by a loud metal sliding sound. There was a loud bang, as if someone punched the metal door and a loud growl.

The teacher dropped the supplies and ran to the gate frightened. “What is that?”

“Shhh.” You gestured with your hands to for her to keep her voice low. “There’s, uhm, animals in the building. My team is just outside but you have to stay hidden. Go back. Get out of the light.” You explained and gestured with your hands for her to move back.

You waited for her to hide, making sure from where you were standing she could t be seen at all. As you walked away from the supply area, you couldn’t see her anymore.

You just had to make sure the others wouldn’t go near that area. You were close to the front of the boiler room now, several feet away door. Boyd and Cora weren’t there anymore, but they had walked somewhere in the boiler room.

 “What are you hearing?” Derek’s voice, though you could barely hear him from the other side.

“Heartbeats.” Scott.

 “Both of them?” Derek again. 

Silence.

You rushed to the boiler room door. Unsure if it will work, you pressed your hands to the door. “Yes.” You whispered to it. You pressed your ear to it and waited.

  Scott’s heart skipped a beat on the other side.

“Yes.” You repeated against the door. You were getting nervous.

“Yeah.” You heard Scott finally say, but his tone was shaky. “Just two.”

A low growl came from behind, in the center of the dark boiler room. Followed by claws scratching against metal.

You stared, the betas glowing yellow eyes slowly glowing brighter as they emerged. You slowly pushed yourself away from the door.

“Cora, Boyd.” You began slowly walking towards them, “please. I don’t want to fight you.” You tried to reason with them.

They didn’t care. The moment Cora stepped forward, you were sprinting in their direction. You clawed at Boyd’s face first making him stumble back.

Cora’s snarled at you, and she flailed her arms crazily at you, desperate to claw at you. You grabbed Cora’s arms. From behind her, Boyd was angrily making his way towards you, the scratches on his face slowly healing.

You looked at Cora, “I’m so sorry.” You let go of on if her arms, using your free arm to dig your claws across her stomach. She roared out in pain and fell to her knees.

You kicked her in the chest, causing her to fall back and knock Boyd back again. Boyd moved Cora to the side and got up quickly.

“Woah,” you held your hands out as Boyd rushed at you. “Hold on.” You couldn’t move, your feet were planted to the ground.

You slid across the cold floor from the impact from Boyd. He had knocked the entire wind out of you and laid there gasping for air.

There was a sharp, heavy pressure in your abdomen. You opened your mouth to scream in pain, but only a mouth full of liquid sputtered out.

You moved your eyes to see what the cause was. Boyd had his entire hand inside your abdomen. He twisted his fist and pulled his hand out. He grabbed your shoulders and held you up.

Core revealed herself from the shadows as she joined you. “Co-.” Another mouthful of blood. She turned her claws as she plunged them in your thigh. You let out a silent scream.

Boyd dropped you and you fell to your knees. The betas atta med you, relentlessly now. You could no longer fight back.

This is it, you thought. It’s almost over.

You were bleeding all over and you were healing slowly. You were slowly losing consciousness. The only thing on your mind now, was Derek.

What would happen to him if you were gone?

Just the thought of possibilities was enough. You gathered enough strength to get on your feet. You screamed, fighting through your pain. You pierced Boyd in his sides, he screamed out in pain. With the little bit of strength left in you, you forced him towards Cora’s direction so he was in front of her.

You let out a scream of encouragement for yourself, and pushed them with all your might. Cora screamed when her back hit the boiler. She deshifted and pulled Boyd towards you and she fell to the floor, unconscious.

You then did the same to Boyd, until he was unconscious as well. You removed your claws from his side and stumbled back. You fell to the ground, and laid there.

There was a bright light shining in your face. You blinked slowly and then looked up. The light was coming from the window above you. The moon had gone down and the sun was making it’s way up in the sky.

You let out a weak laugh of relief. You blinked once, slowly. Again, this time slower. And again, but you didn’t open your eyes again.

Beacon Hills High School

Derek looked up at the morning sky, relieved. Surprisingly even sharing a quick handshake with Argent as a thank you. He looked over at Scott.

Scott didn’t look too relieved; he looked like he was going to be sick. He wanted to stay by the boiler room door, but Derek wouldn’t let him.

“Scott.” He calls his name.

“The suns up,” Scott said hastily, “we should let them out now.”

Derek stared at him suspiciously, “Not yet. The sun may be up but we don’t know if they’ve shifted back. We’ll wait a little longer.”

“How long is a little longer?”

“Is there something you need to tell me, Scott?”

“No.” He looked back at Stiles. Stiles shook his head, advising his friend against what he was about to do. “Maybe.” He changed his answer.

“What?”

“Oh thank goodness, it’s Erica!” Stiles shouted.

He was actually happy to see Erica but was more relieved that he just saved his best friend from being murdered.

Derek turned around. It was Erica. And she was her normal self again. And she was walking—

“With Peter? But..” he turned back to look at Scott. “You said you saw Y/N leave with Peter last night.”

“Huh?” Scott asked dumbfounded by the sudden attention again.

Peter looked at all five faces, realizing there was one missing. “Where’s Y/N?” Peter asked.

“Where is she, Scott?” Derek chided. “And don’t lie to me.”

A beat. “She’s in the boiler room.”

Derek was furious. He hesitated between grabbing Scott and wringing his neck or running to the boiler room. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

He began to run towards the school but stopped when he saw his sister and Boyd walking out.

His heart dropped. Boyd was carrying you. Cora was walking next to him, a crying mess. A stranger, a woman, ran out from the school building right behind them.

“Ms. Blake?” Stiles whispered to himself.

“I’ll take care of the civilian.” Argent awkwardly announced.

Derek didn’t say anything. He just started walking towards all of you. The closer he got, the worse you began to look.

Cora and Boyd were still healing, but they were considerably in better shape than you were.

“Will you tell her,” the teacher called out, waiting for Derek to look at her, “that I said thank you.”

Derek looked at her. She somehow was happy that she had gotten his attention, because she smiled. Argent broke the eye contact as gestured the teacher to follow him.

Derek continued to stare at her as she walked away.

“Derek.”

He looked down at Cora.

“I wanted to stop.” She tells him. “I couldn’t.”

He closed the gap and hugged Cora. “I’m just glad you’re alive.” She began sobbing into his chest. She let out all the tears that she had been holding in for years. All of those and then some.

“We should take her to Deaton.” Scott suggested.

“I’ll take her.” Derek told him. “You’ve done enough.” There was no hint of gratitude in his voice.

Stiles put his hand on his best friend’s shoulder. “Scotty.” Stiles shook his head at him. “Let’s just go home, man.”

I didn’t mean it as shady, but let me explain? Derek has a reason to be aggressive. But he at the very least has a pattern of assault. He breaks Scott’s wrist to make a point, he breaks into houses, he preys on vulnerable teens for his Betas. He smugly enjoyed beating Scott at the ice rink, even if Scott started that. Stiles wasn’t permenantly maimed by the steering wheel or being slammed into walls, but then again, Isaac seemed fine after Scott threw him around. Still assault. 1

It isn’t less damaging, coercive, or violent because the person gets better or shakes it off, whether it’s Scott or Derek getting physical. I like Derek’s character. He’s a violent shitheel in the first seasons. It’s not surprising. It makes sense, he has deep seated reasons to be. But he happily used intimidation and physical force against Scott, Jackson, Stiles, and his Betas to try and get them to comply. It happens repeatedly on screen. I’d argue that is a pattern. Stiles even says it is 2

Now, I might be harsh on Talia. But I wouldn’t call her reign a success based on what we do see. The Alphas have a massacre. Gerard does too. Derek and Peter killed a girl, right under her nose. The Argents still hunted. She put Malia at risk, and her adoptive family. Wiping Peter and Derek’s minds ended up putting more at risk later and saved no one. And then the Hales died, which wasn’t her fault. Canon says she’s awesome, but I can’t think of one thing she effectively fixed.

But true, we don’t know much about Laura. Maybe she was a great older sister to Derek and would have been a great Alpha. What I meant was, we have no evidence she ran a pack, so Derek probably didn’t get a first person look at her showing him how t should be done. I don’t hate Talia or Laura. I pity Talia for the piss poor exploration of her character. But the idea Derek should be a skilled experienced werewolf adult, with what happened around him? Doesn’t seem credible.

And yes, maybe his methods of training have Werewolf roots. That doesn’t change the damage it does to Scott, who doesn’t want to be a werewolf, and new scared isolated Betas, anymore than Malia’s clingy scratchy growly unpleasantness is more ok for Stiles just because canon says it’s coyote tradition. It’s still damaging to the person it harms. Look, I like Derek’s growth. But he groped Erica in a hospital. He broke Isaac’s wrist for asking a question. He has a pattern of violence against teens.

DW: I mean, everything you’re saying about Derek, to me, is disregarding the fact that he’s a werewolf, you know? This is what wolves do: 

That’s how they keep order. I actually like that Derek has that undertone of barely repressed violence to him, because that’s what a wolf is. Breaking Scott’s wrist, to me, is just the werewolf equivalent of the above gif. What you call a “violent shitheel” I call “being a wolf”. What you see as a pattern of abusive behaviour, I see as “the sort of behaviour you see all the time on the Discovery Channel.” 

And no, Derek did not “prey” on vulnerable teenagers. We know from Scott’s talk with Boyd that Derek told them about the bite, and how it could be dangerous, and how it could open up a dangerous world for them. And they all agreed to the bite still. 

And you need to rewatch that scene with Erica in this hospital if you think that’s what “being groped” is. That scene was specifically framed to make Derek appear predatory and threatening–spoiler alert, they’re setting Derek up to be the antagonist to Scott’s protagonist–but nobody groped anyone, and you need to contrast it with the next scene of Erica, where she is clearly fucking owning her new identity as a werewolf and has absolutely zero regrets at that point. 

I mean, I agree that Derek was a terrible alpha all things considered, but I don’t agree at all that he’s a “violent shitheel.” I think he’s an inexperienced alpha wolf who doesn’t know what he’s doing, and does a lot of wrong things. 

As for Talia, we have no idea what an alpha is supposed to be, or to do. Is she some sort of supernatural governor of her territory, or is she just mom, who is also the head of the family? Again, fanon is getting in the way of canon, because we don’t know. You use the word “reign” which implies she’s got authority beyond the walls of her house, and possibly even her territory, but that’s supposition. We also don’t know if she knew the Argents were breaking code, right up until they betrayed Deucalion–hell, since we know nothing about Deucalion’s history we can’t even be sure that the hunters were breaking code when they attacked him. For all we know Deucalion had left a path of dead innocents all the way from wherever he came from. All we actually know is that Talia agreed everyone could meet on her neutral territory, and it went horribly wrong. 

As for Malia–we don’t know why she made those decisions, because canon is a clusterfuck of plotholes and inconsistencies. But where in canon does it say Talia’s awesome? Canon says very little about her–fanon has by and large assumed she’s awesome, but canon doesn’t say much about her at all. 

And canon, I think we can both agree, fucked itself over twelve ways since breakfast.

I'm not sure if you've talked about this before, my apologies if you have, I'm a little confused. The transfer of werewolf power through families. I see a lot of people say Laura inherited Talia's spark after her death. I'm not saying it's not possible, but how did that theory come to be? I know it's not really touched on, but I thought you could only become an alpha by killing one or the true alpha thing. Was it mentioned and I missed something? Thanks :)

no need to apologize anon. i've got a few posts that address the topic of power transfer within the universe of teen wolf. it is a confusing topic.

it's confusing for a few reasons one being that in the show we often have unreliable narrators so what is said and what is shown do not always align. another reason is that the show doesn't really do very much exposition on it.

it's also confusing because of the fanon that developed over the years trying to fill in the gaps of canon because that's what fanon is for.

this is my analysis of canon that has come from rewatching the show over the years.

here's the rules as i understand them:

sparks are inherent to everyone and they are a source of power. taking someone else's spark enhances another's power and can be used to fuel rites, sacrifices, rituals and so on.

disregard what peter says in visionary about blue eyes meaning one has killed an innocent. innocence is a made up, arbitrary human moral concept. the same for guilt. what i think is far more likely is that there's a stigma attached to having blue eyes in the supernatural community due to it representing power hungry werewolves who kill people to increase their own power (ie: someone like duecalion).

duecalion straight up tells us how stealing power works in the beast of beacon hills when he explains to to theo:

“that’s the secret to taking power. pain. take their pain, take their life, take their power. It’s all or nothing. you take until there’s nothing more to give. that’s where you find the spark of power. and then, you take that as well. pain, life, power. in that order and only that order.”

4. scott becomes a true alpha due to his own willpower transforming his spark which is why true alphas are so rare. they do not steal power from others but create it. their sparks cannot be stolen by killing them because it's specific and unique to them. it can only be transferred/inherited by another werewolf who was created by using that spark ie: liam or hayden.

5. there are 3 ways to obtain alpha status in teen wolf.

killing an alpha for their alpha spark. this is by far the most common way we see alphas rise to power. violence begets violence.

becoming a true alpha by force of will which is rare.

inheriting the alpha spark which is what happened with laura.

laura inheriting talia's spark isn't really a theory. it's what happened. what's unclear is the hows and whys of how it works exactly but i have an idea on that.

i believe the answer lies with the knowledge that scott's true alpha spark is only being able to be taken/inherited by a beta created by it and malia halving corrine's power by virtue of being born.

my theory is that that laura inherited talia's alpha spark upon her death because talia's children share a piece of her own spark and therefore a little bit of her power. this is how born werewolves happen. laura being the oldest, more experienced and powerful of the three is the one the spark went to when talia died.

Fictional character I relate to the most:

Probably Velanna from Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. She has a lot of pent up anger which sometimes blinds her, and very focused on what she thinks is right or wrong, insistent to a point that’s sometimes an issue, and definitely blinded by her strong emotions. On the other hand, she’s idealistic and it makes her preserve, her culture and her people’s future are very important to her (hi, I’m Jewish and mad a lot), and she would do absolutely everything for those she loves, even though that’s just a very small number of people. (Plus, she’s very much coded as autistic, has problems understanding sarcasm and relating to other people, especially when she was younger, and as autistic person with very low empathy, that’s a mood.)

Book you can read over and over without getting tired of it:

Terry Pratchett’s Thud! definitely, or, well, any other Terry Pratchett novel. My favourite book series are The Edge Chronicles, by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. They’re children’s fantasy books, but they’re essentially to me what Harry Potter was to a lot of other people growing up. I periodically re-read The Winter Knights, which is my favourite of the series (except that my favourite character is from the Rook trilogy, but Oh Well).

What’s your favourite comfort show/movie:

Leverage, definitely. Whenever I feel bad, I just queue up random episodes and watch them until I feel better, and so far, it has worked every single time. (On occasion, I rewatch random s1 and s2 episodes of Supernatural - it’s more a nostalgia thing, but it depends on why I need comfort.) Also Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, provided I skip certain episodes.

Which fictional character are you most defensive over:

Sam, as should be evident, and pretty much... every female character in anything ever. Some people are Wrong About Talia Winters from Babylon 5 and her s2 arc, so I gotta fight them, and I feel also rather defensive of Loghain in Dragon Age, Xanth from the Edge Chronicles, and Ash Tyler from Star Trek: Discovery.

Uh, Teen Wolf, probably? I was on a field trip when s3 was airing, missed several episodes, found out my fave died during those, and then I just stopped caring. 

Show you’re most excited for:

The new season of Shadowhunters is going to start airing on the 20th, and I really need my boy Simon to be okay! That’s all I want. (Also, Anna Hopkins is going to play Lilith, and I’m extremely into her.) Other than that, I’m slowly making my way through season 2 of Jessica Jones, which I’m enjoying a lot, and I’m excited for the new seasons of Grace and Frankie and Star Trek: Discovery.

I’m gay and trans, so I just really love graphic shirts and flannel with cargo pants and a leather jacket. Favourite fanfic tropes:

Enemies to Friends to Lovers is just... so good. It’s so good. (They don’t have to be enemies, but just people that are pretty antagonistic towards each other at the beginning and then grow to know each other and like each other and then fall in love. FUCK YES.) Related to that, the mutual, seemingly unrequited pining? YES.

On the other hand, I also love the very slow change from best friends to lovers. People that already know each other, have been through a lot together, whose feelings change gradually, slowly, and their relationship just changes into something different. Love it.

And all of these can be perfectly tied together by pretending to be dating/married for a case/a family gathering/insert other flimsy excuse. Especially when it’s a Mistaken For A Couple and they just go along with it and it grows and they’re in way over their head?? Yes.

(Specific to Supernatural, though, I love powers!Sam and Boy King!Sam both a whole lot. Fuck me up. Also, is asphyxiation a trope or does that just fall under Kinks We Wish Nate Would Stop Bringing Up?)
