During the Early Greek Period, Sirens were imagined as humans with bird heads, but by the Classical Period they were sometimes drawn with human heads and torsos, but a fish tale. By medieval times, Sirens had become conflated with mermaids, lending to our modern Western conception of them. . . . #mermaid #classicalmythology #mythandlore #greekmyth #medievalhistory #mermaidtail #mermaidartwork #mermaidmagic #mermaidcore #mermaidcoreaesthetic #mercore #oceanlore #talesofthesea #sirensong #sirens #greekmythology #sirensofthesea (at The Deep Blue Sea) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpv6YOxN8w6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pearl from the Depths
Two divers, equipped with all the necessary gear for deep-sea diving, ventured into the hidden corners of the sea in search of pearls. These waters were unclaimed, yet held countless dangers. Sometimes divers returned with distorted memories, or didn't return at all. Yet, rumors of an incredible pearl, shining brighter than any star, compelled them to search.
One day, after morning preparations, they set out in pursuit of this pearl. The dive was long. The surrounding silence was only broken by the faint sounds of water and the bubbling of oxygen tanks. The water grew colder, the light dimmer, and the pressure increasingly intense. They swam side by side, communicating through hand gestures, their primary means of expression in this silent world.
Delving deeper, a crevice revealed itself, within which lay a majestic shell, reminiscent of a precious gem on a throne.
Drawing closer, they were met with a sight of sheer magic. The pearl inside the shell glowed in a manner indescribable by words. Its luminance seemed to tell tales of thousands of years spent at the ocean floor.
One of them gestured, "Are you sure it's safe?". The other responded with a silent yet confident sign, as if to say, "All will be well."
But, as the first reached out for the pearl, everything changed. The crevice began to close, and they realized they were facing a living creature, its trap now sprung.
The water's force pushed the second diver away. He tried to rescue his companion, but the latter, seemingly under a spell, resisted, preventing his extraction from the monster's jaws. The struggle depleted the second diver's oxygen supply.
He reached the surface but changed. His gaze was distant, his memory warped, becoming one of those unfortunate souls who fell prey to the sea's depths and returned no longer the same.

What's the largest item you've found on a beach? I found this large thing last year but it was getting dark, I had been out for hours and didn't have the car with me so I left it where it was. #beachcomber #beachcombing #beachstories #talesofthesea #seaglass #oflochandsea #etsygifts #etsyjewellery #etsyfinds #smallbusiness #independentbusiness #april1 #localbusiness #lockdown #covid_19 #supportsmallbusinesses https://www.instagram.com/p/B-bsL9aFXO1/?igshid=e6ribwvesoax

13th July 1772, British Royal Navy Captain, explorer, navigator, and cartographer James Cook embarks on his second voyage aboard HMS Resolution to search for ‘Terra Australis’, the fabled Southern continent. The continent was first proposed in the ancient world by the theory that continents in the north should be balanced by a continent in the south. Despite the name, ‘Terra Australis’, did not refer to the continent of Australia, but to the continent later confirmed to exist, and named Antarctica in the 1890’s. By the following January, the crew of the Resolution became the first navigator’s known to history to cross the Antarctic Circle. The ship however got no further as Cook had believed that due to the insurmountable ice he had found, a possible continent beyond was impossible to reach. This was however proved incorrect on the 27th January 1820, when the Russian Antarctic expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev reached Antarctica. The expedition had sailed from Russia on the 16th July 1819, three days and forty seven years after James Cook. Three days later, on the 30th January 1820, a British expedition captained by Edward Bransfield sighted Trinity Peninsula in Antarctica, but the discovery of Antarctica was ultimately credited to Bellingshausen and Lazarev. The nautical race to map what was believed to be the last geographic areas of the globe, had in the early years of the 19th century caused a political rift between Britain and Russia. In 1817 fears were expressed that Russia would be the first country to explore the North West Passage. #captainjamescook #sailinghistory #maritimehistory #royalnavyhistory #hmsresolution #terraaustralia #terraaustralis #antartica #18thcentury #18thcenturyhistory #tallships #sailingships #antarticcircle #arcticcircle #19thcentury #19thcenturyhistory #russianhistory #bellingshausen #northwestpassage #exploration #discoveryglobe #historicalstories #historystory #talesofthesea #historicaldiscovery #icebound #historicalmaps https://www.instagram.com/p/CRZNx3elzV7/?utm_medium=tumblr

Old Norse Pile…..Upon leaving Sweden for the umpteenth time, the older Norsemen bragged of their previous adventures. One young lad, a brand new, fresh faced crew member listened, wide eyed in silence. To him their tales sounded very much like stealing, but he knew far better than to question them. They hurriedly neared the shadowy darkened hulk of Old Norse Pile. They should have approached with caution, especially as the wind was rapidly blowing up. However, there were quite a few new faces on board the various longships that night and the elders liked nothing more than to show off. They rounded the rock as quickly as they could, foolishly believing that no debris would lie beyond. Nothing could have prepared them for what they were heading into. The longboats however broad bottomed and stable, were not made to ground out onto rocks. Hundreds of tiny unforgiving rocks that didn’t show themselves in advance, but just waited until the carnage crashed about all over them. The debris was somewhat reminiscent of a a twig in a bubbling brook. The Norsemen of that particular raiding party, met their demise that night. The water was far too cold and they didn’t stand a chance. All but one Norseman! Perhaps it was his youthful fitness that saved him. When the locals had found him washed up ashore, he was barely alive. They welcomed him into their homes as if he was one of theirs. Passing of time and an awful lot of patience saw him grow strong again. Eventually there was no longer a language barrier, kindness and love overcame all. Today, the tale is still told of how Old Norse Pile got its name and why it is now home to a lighthouse. It refers to the kindly Norseman that lived for many a year. He wasn’t like all the rest, all of those that had come before. It speaks of his goodness, his knowledge of right from wrong. That night, it saved his life. They remember him with great fondness. The lighthouse was built to save many more lives in his memory. #norsemen #driftwood #driftwoodart #sea #vikings #shipwreck #talesofthesea #uniquegift

Krakus
The moon hung in the sky, a day yet from its full-state and already tired in its orbit. The sickly yellow luminosity seeped through a blanket of mottled, undulating cloud with an oily halo, proclaiming the body to be the lone sentinel of the heavens. No stars could be seen through the uneven backdrop; none would dare be bold enough to try. No breeze stirred and the air was heavy. Were it not for the muted glittering of the waves below, looking upon this scene would be akin to staring at a backlit painting, slowly feeling imprisoned in its absolute stillness where even breathing feels like giving away one's position. The shoreline a distant memory, fates coalesced and now was the time. Such was the apprehensive tranquillity of the night that the gradual breaking of the waves was almost unnoticeable to the eye, unless one were already trained upon that spot. Groping tentacles first slid flatly onto the surface, themselves wetly reflecting the pallid glare from above. Silently, more appeared around them. And more. Too many to be a single creature surely, but too intertwined to count and impossible to tell apart. The activity spread outward like an ink blot on black paper until all that could be seen to each horizon was a writhing mass of uncanny, sub-aquatic intelligence. As thick tendrils began to reach upward, almost in supplication to their lunar sovereign, eyes began to open between them. A great many eyes; malevolent, turquoise orbs bulging in the wan light and roving wildly as their owners bobbed upon the sea. They appeared to blink as their vision was blocked momentarily by the swaying, outstretched feelers of others. Slowly, they gained their bearing as if coming to unspoken agreement, and focused on the reason they had been called from their slimy bed. The ocean itself seemed to sag when, as one, they swarmed into the ship...
