ik no one has seen m.fs so this means nothing to anyone besides me But i think even beyond the big power imbalance and weird ages one of my biggest complaints about ta.lder is that so many people seem to ship it in a way that feels like it flattens so much of the arc for both characters. this complex dynamic of tal idolizing this person for years and then realizing how corrupt said person is and having to grapple with that and also what that person Symbolized and what that means about this future that was based around this idea that she now knows wasn't real and the line between idolization and adoration and feeling Special and Chosen by someone in power who you have looked up to for years and the sense of betrayal felt and trying to understand and people just flatten it to "they're in love <3 war criminal gf" like. it feels like it takes so much away from both of their arcs and they both deserve better

Dragon Age: The Veilguard art book pages, under a cut due to spoilers:
Tumblr media
Top left: Lace Harding in travel gear. Top right: Rogue Taash in a dragon-skin suit. Center: Imshael, a choice spirit in human form. Bottom right: An Antivan Crow Dreamer who is covered in tattoos that remind her of her identity when she returns from dreaming.
Tumblr media
Top left: In his earliest form, a potential Qunari companion was a saarebas (a mage). Top right: Trying to find the right balance between Warden and Dalish hunter in an early exploration of Davrin. Center right: Lucanis started as a Tevinter agent. Bottom left: Calpernia was to return from Inquisition, this time as a party member. Bottom right: A potential Qunari companion evolved from saarebas to dapper Qunari spy, offering a deeper look into Qunari culture.
Tumblr media
Top: Long ago, the Kal Sharok were cut off from the rest of the dwarves by a Blight. They survived by hunting darkpawn, becoming like Grey Wardens. We explored what scrappier dwarves with an even closer relationship to the Stone would look like. Bottom: Tevinter found the last tatters of the ancient elven empire and copied what they could. We wanted Tevinter designs to look like simplistic copies of elven designs.
Tumblr media
Top: The red rope of the Qunari represents their ideology, the Qun. Each member is simply one section of the continuous thread that will one day wrap around all Thedas. Bottom: Early exploration of the Crows. These weren't luxurious enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top left: Nevarra is largely a desert nation, so we came up with a design language that was light and flowing. Top right: Nevarran dragon hunters might wear ceremonial dragon-skin cloaks with large crested helmets. Center: For the Mourn Watch, we explored dermestid beetle and fly motifs. We also researched the embalming process and how undead bodies might decay with neglect.
Tumblr media
Top: A tal-vashoth from Rivain. Center: Some of the first costumes designed for Joplin were mercenary outfits. The idea was to come up with a cheap, standardized uniform that would be easy to mass-produce. It would be the common gear for mercenaries and bandits alike.
Tumblr media
Top: A normal day in Tevinter. Center: Tevinter was built on the corpse of the elven empire. Thematically, we explored costumes for Tevinter citizens that resembled scavengers (such as a vulture, a fly, a maggot). Center right: We also tried to see if access to water would make for a good class distinction (the more wet someone looked, the wealthier they were).
Tumblr media
Top: We designed the Tevinter clothing style based on Dorian and the Venatori soldiers from Inquisition. Bottom center: While Tevinter is full of powerful mages and shady characters, there are still people living their lives there. We wanted to design the full spectrum of Tevinter society. Bottom right: We tried taking the serpent motif to its logical conclusion. Oftentimes you don't know where the line is until you cross it.
Tumblr media
Top: Academic robes for the mages' college. Bottom: Exploring the various categories of Tevinter slaves.
Tumblr media
Top: The party explores an ancient elven ruin, but it's protected by a magical security system. Center left: A draconic motif for the Antaam. Center right: A Tevinter gladiator enhanced with magical irons.
Tumblr media
Made You Look There can be a tendency to race through environments. To help teach players to pay more attention, we explored creatures that would be deadly to the unobservant. The wizard scissor chair was a favorite. Enter a fancy dining room or the luxurious hall of a magister's tower, and you'd never know when one of these was ready to snap. Center: Certain barrels might have extra webs on them, and maybe they occasionally shudder.
Tumblr media
Top left: The sewer slug. Center left: We tried to develop some hybrid creatures, things that Ghilan'nain might have experimented on. Like this cyclops-dragon-centaur. Center right: The spider man was meant to read like a normal crowd character until you got within grabbing distance. [drawing is annotated "Surprise!"] Bottom: Some creatures are designed to solve a problem. In this case, keeping players away from the ocean. This was meant to be Ghilan'nain's version of a mermaid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The turtle was another creature that would force players to pay attention to their environment. It would be passive, unless you got too close. Later on we would explore what was possible with domesticated versions of this animal.
Tumblr media
Top left: Messenger dolls. When you light the candle, it comes to life. You hand it a scroll and tell it the name of the recipient. Not many messages actually make it to their final destination, so it's best not to use a messenger doll for any critical information. Top right: Hourglass construct. As long as the sand is flowing, the creature can fight. It's particularly weak when it's flipping itself over. Center left: The practice of blood magic in Tevinter has created a black market for blood. Sometimes there simply aren't enough volunteers. Bottom right: More of Ghilan'nain's hybrid creatures, this time a vulture-bear and a giant. Drawing annotations: Perfectly innocent scroll-carrying hooks, Inactive when unlit, Used to deliver non-critical messages, Attacking, Tired, Vulnerable
Tumblr media
We explored this idea for public transportation in Minrathous: domesticated giants that act as a taxi service.
Tumblr media
Top: Every wizard needs a wizard tower, and we thought it would be fun if Tevinter had an entire suburb of them. Center: Early diagrams like this help to flesh out the visual language of a location. Starting with the Tevinter tile sets and props we made in Inquisition, we expanded on the sharp, angled, proud shape language. Bottom: Minrathous has a specific location on the map of Thedas, with the Nocen Sea to its east, and the Valarian Fields and the High Reaches to its west. It was exciting to try to bring this location to life. Drawing annotations: Pagan ritual site, capped with Chantry chapel
Tumblr media
Minrathous Non literal maps and diagrams like this help to keep track of complicated locations. Tevinter has been referenced since the first Dragon Age game. There are many locations and landmarks that have been mentioned in dialogue and journal entries. As we began to build Tevinter for real, we tried to organize these elements into a cohesive whole. Drawing annotations: Chantry, Colosseum, Forum, Archon's Palace, Dwarven Embassy, Slave Quarter, Market Street, Upper Class, Lower Class, Guardians, Front Gate, Imperial Highway, The High Reaches, Valarian Fields, Nocen Sea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part Three The Veilguard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A symbolic map of Thedas. Rather than providing specific cartographical information, it expresses the character of each region.
Tumblr media
Art Style Dragon Age has never exactly been photorealistic. Dragon Age: Origins was loosely based on fantasy paintings, filtered through the limitations of the technology of the time. In Dragon Age II and continuing in Inquisition, we wanted to push our characters' designs to support their strong personalities. For Veilguard, we wanted to take a confident step away from the uncanny valley and toward even stronger characterization. The goal was to make personality and emotion read more clearly, in the same way theatrical makeup exaggerates an actor's features. Center right: We briefly discussed doing extensive focus tests, but the core leadership believed in this direction, and we knew we'd use any data we received from focus testing to just do exactly what we wanted anyway. That easily saved us half a year. Bottom: We set up a design hierarchy with shape at the top. Silhouette was the primary concern. Personality needed to come through loud and clear at this stage. Each subsequent design element supported what came before it. Value helped to strengthen and clarify silhouette, color supported value, and texture tied it all together. Drawing annotations: Inquisition, Veilguard, Inquisition, original shape, exaggerated confident shape, removed details, repeated shape, removed details, value, lighter background contrast from snow, original, adjusted, color, overall, color, adjustment
Tumblr media
The box: We were pushing personality in characters and environments, but the real test of our principles was this box. Various drawing annotations: Inquisition, Veilguard. Inquisition, Veilguard, surface response Notes - foreshadow that: there's a huge horrible green hole in the sky. Use atmosphere haze with one purpose: strengthen silhouettes. Lil: holy killer, mercurial, evasive, dancer, bard Cass: sharp, lithe, hard shell, soft heart Exaggerated: shape, color Realistic: surface response Photo 90° angle Rich color value contrast warm/cool contrast Breaking straight lines Silhouette Exaggerated details Reference Veilguard Believable personality: push the shapes to tell the story. Value, color, texture support shapes Example: dominant shape, exaggerate unique features, more variety in stone size, decadence + entropy = faded painting Tevinter description: 1. Dominance: iconography, aggressive, pride, surveillance 2. Entropy: decay, neglect, dust, forgotten 3. Decadence: seductive, indulgent, luxurious
Tumblr media
Elgar'nan The elven god of tyranny, vengeance, fatherhood, and the sun. All-Father of the elven pantheon. In previous games, we've seen powerful human mages that obeyed evil gods, broke into the Black City, and were corrupted. This time we were going to see the evil gods themselves. We wanted to make previous characters like Corypheus and the Architect look like crude copies next to Elgar's controlled visage. Top left: With Solas, we established that hair loss would be the only outward indication of an ancient elf's age. Elgar wears a wig attached to his crown. Center left: The shards of lyrium around his collar were each taken from a slain Titan during the war between the first elves and the Titans. They have become corrupted by their time in the Black City. Center right: Elgar uses an eclipse shape language, a reference to being the god of fire and shadow. Center: His costume was meant to reflect the general or dictator archetype: he proudly brandishes the medals of his previous conquests as a symbol of his authority. The badges on his coat are more modest at the bottom but become more and more ostentatious as his victories (and his pride) increase. He also wears around his neck a vial of dust, taken from the same spot where his spirit self-formed his body from the dust. Drawing annotations: "Body imagery", "'Spirit' nerve wings", "Show growth", "General", "King", "God-Emperor", "'God'", "Black City", "Blight Dreams", "Tormented Elgar"
Tumblr media
One direction we explored had him badly desiccated, with only magical living armor keeping him alive.
Tumblr media
Ghilan'nain Goddess of monsters. Mother of the Halla. Ghilan'nain was once an elf chosen by Andruil, the goddess of the hunt, to become a god as reward for her devotion to the world's animals. She then became part of the elven pantheon. Top: She is the goddess of monsters, creating countless twisted creatures. She has modified herself so much over the years that whatever her face may have been, it's long forgotten. Center left: Her mask tells the story of how she was made the youngest of the gods. On the first day, she struck down the monsters of the air. On the second day, she drowned the giants of the sea. On the third day, she killed the beasts of the land. Center right: Ghilan'nain is our sinister mad-scientist god, using her blighted magic to create horrors out of Thedas' people and wildlife. She mutates the darkspawn into even more powerful and "efficient" forms, for example, and also warps the Antaam who foolishly come to her for power. Bottom left: Ghilan'nain's horns are meant to reflect a hunting bow in reference to Andruil.
Tumblr media
Top: Ghilan'nain wants to restore the old elven empire so she can continue her work. Analytical and curious, she sees everyone as potential stock for experiments (except for fellow god Elgar'nan, with whom she gets on well). Ghilan'nain is pitiless about her work - she'll happily slice open a hundred people for parts - but she's got a soft spot of pride in her monsters once they're complete. Center: Her Archdemon, Razikale, is an enchanted dragon that gets modified even further. Bottom: Razikale was inspired by the Jabberwocky from Terry Gilliam's film of the same name.

Alexia Putellas, “just let me in and accept I’m not going anywhere”, reader’s kitchen
a.putellas II cross the line
you grunted as you worked the dough, sleeves rolled up to your elbows and sweatshirt dotted with flour as you punched, rolled and kneaded it across the board.
with a sigh you grabbed your rolling pin, flattening it before repeating the actions all over again, oven chiming to alert you that it had finally pre heated.
repeating the routine twice over you picked it up and dropped it into a shallow pan, sprinkling the foccacia with oil and massaging it in, gently prodding in holes and finishing it off with some rosemary and seasalt.
you sighed with relief as you carefully closed the oven door, rolling your shoulders and neck which were heavy with tension, making a mental note to con your girlfriend into giving you a massage later not that it often took much to convince her to get her hands on you.
a hot shower helped to melt away a little of the tension, and a thorough washing of your hair helped you to feel like a human being again and not a bag of flour.
you left your skin care for before bed and got changed into a pair of your girlfriends national team shorts and a shirt so large the two of you could have fit into it.
you were happy with how the bread was progressing, your first timer going off as you set multiple other alarms, knowing this next block of time was the most crucial.
baking had always been an escape for you, something taught to you by your grandma and passed down, your sundays spent at her house learning all her tips and tricks while your mum worked her second job to keep a roof over your head.
you'd first met alexia when she was in london for a nike shoot, the photographer a close friend you were temping for while on break from university.
there was a miscommunication from her team which lead to a somewhat heated conversation you could see she felt uncomfortable about, hanging awkwardly to the side while her agent lead the charge.
you'd stepped in and asked if she'd liked a coffee, assuring you were doing a run anyway and that it was no bother to grab her one on the way. she'd accepted but bargained she had to come with you, a little reserved at first but eventually the two of you got to talking.
and as everyone says, the rest was history.
you heard alexia's keys jimmy with the lock, front door popping open as her footsteps sounded in the hall, a small grunt as she wrestled off her trainers and a gentle thump of her gym bag hitting the floor.
"hola mi amor." you greeted with a warm smile, meeting her halfway in a tight hug, laughing as she exhaled tiredly into your neck making you squirm and poke at her sides.
"are you baking?" she mumbled into your shoulder, hunched over as you hummed and slipped a hand down the collar of her top, scratching gently at the base of her neck.
"stop that!" you laughed as once more she exhaled, pushing her away and ignoring her whine of annoyance as you did so. "i have not seen you all day." your girlfriend complained with a slight pout, hands tugging at the back of your shirt.
"you've been gone for three hours!" you rolled your eyes playfully, spinning away from her grabby hands and back into the kitchen. "exactly! tal tortura." alexia huffed, lips still turned downward into an annoyed pout.
"pobre bebé." you mocked as her eyes narrowed but once again you dodged her reaching for you. "i'm baking." you warned with a coy smile, your girlfriend throwing her head back with a dramatic groan as if she'd just been shot.
"the bread does not need your attention princesa, i do." alexia tried to follow after you but grunted as your hand shot out stopping her in her tracks. "nice try putellas, you know the rules." you warned, booping her nose making her scowl.
"this line-" you trailed your finger from the counter to the stove. "-is not to be crossed." you wagged your finger at her. "esta es una regla estúpida!" the footballer argued, still hovering right on the line.
"it isn't a stupid rule when you cook and i am not allowed past it, is it?" you challenged, hands on hips and raised eyebrows. early on in your relationship you and alexia established you both adored the use of the kitchen, only there was just one small problem.
you both hated sharing that space with someone else, even one another.
so the line rule was implemented to save future arguments, and most of the time it worked a charm. however your girlfriend was a passionate woman and fiercely stubborn, and when she wanted something there wasn't much that could stand successfully in her way.
"ale please i spent so long working on this bread i really need it to be perfect!" you sighed as her hand shot out and grabbed your top pulling you over the line, nose tucking into your neck as gentle kisses were fanned across the skin.
"such a perfectionist." your girlfriend teased quietly, silencing your quip back as she pressed her lips properly against yours, the timer going off in the background.
"no no not yet, little more cariño por favor." alexia purred, strong toned arms wrapping around your hips as she held your body captive, back pressed to her front and lips peppering kisses across your neck.
"ale!" you sighed, eyes fluttering closed for a moment as she kissed a little less sweetly, teeth grazing your shoulder. "mm?" she hummed, large hands squeezing your hips as your eyes opened and you spotted the oven, brought back down to earth.
"no!" you groaned, pushing against her and catching her off guard as she stumbled and you darted back into the kitchen. you ignored her complaining about a lack of attention as you sprayed the top of your bread with a spray bottle of oil.
"vale you fussed over your bread, my turn." alexia stomped her foot not unlike a child throwing a tantrum making you smile in amusement. "later, the bread is almost done amor be patient." you winked, bending down to peer through the glass of your oven.
"so i cannot cross the line, sí?" alexia clarified as you hummed, not thinking much of it. though as you turned around, that all changed. "alexia!" you laughed in disbelief seeing her pulling herself up onto the counter.
you watched on as she spun her body and shuffled forward slightly, dropping to the ground with a wolfish grin. "did not cross the line." she took a deep bow as you rolled your eyes. "you are so-" you started to lecture as her grin grew.
"no no." her finger pushed against your lips silencing you as you raised an eyebrow. "just let me in and accept i'm not going anywhere princesa." your girlfriend smiled cockily, drawing your body closer into hers.
"that is because you are so stubb-" you started, words swallowed by the rosy pink lips which pressed against yours, breath hitching as her hands slid around your hips and cheekily squeezed at your ass, alexia using this to slip her tongue into your mouth.
you resisted the urge to moan as her hands pinched and squeezed, paying all of your body just as much attention as your mouth and sending your head into a spin.
but then, you smelled it and pushed away, spinning around and dropping to the oven.
"putellas if this bread is burnt you're sleeping outside for a week!"

Can anyone explain me what the ever-loving fuck is going on with the Qunari in Veilguard?
When I learned about Treviso occupation, I thought that was the result of Qunari officially being on the warpath. The Trespasser made it clear that the Qunari have been planning their invasion for quite a while - but chose to act covertly at first. Which makes perfect sense for Qunari, this is what they do. That would have also added some delicious moments for Taash and the Vashoth!Rook.
However, in the game we have not Qunari, but the Antaam (military). Which sounds stupid. The "it's not the nation, its it's soldiers doing it" excuse already sounds stupid if you ask me, but in the context of the Qunari lore it sounds even more stupid.
So, according to the accompanying media, Antaam...rebelled and acted without sanction. They have split into groups led by warlords who squabble between themselves and try to dig deep into the land they occupied. Which is bullshit.
The Antaam, meaning "body" in Qunlat, is the military of the Qunari led by the Arishok. Metaphorically, the Antaam are the eyes, ears, legs, arms and hands of the creature, everything that one needs to interact with the world, and so most Qunari encountered by Thedosians belong to the military
Antaam listen to the Arishok and Arishok alone. Qun is built on a system where everyone knows their place - and when they're out of place, they freak the fuck out, the massacre-the-family-because-my-tool-is-lost way. So, the probability of a large group of Qunari, an entire fucking army doing something without a command, and then digging a deeper hole for themselves by warlording is extremely low. Also, by all accounts, they're stop being seen by their kin as Qunari - they are Tal-Vashoth. Because they acted on their own volition, disobeyed the order, disobeyed the Arishok. This is not how the Qun works. No matter what they say, how they call themselves - they are Tal-Vashoth.
Like, there is a reason why Qunari are terrified of not fitting their mold - not only they have no idea of what to do when things don't go as planned, but also they are scared of losing their way and becoming permanently lost. The Iron Bull had that belief that he might lose his mind because he didn't know if he should trust himself without the guidance of Qun - him being a little more flexible due to his work as a spy as well as getting people he grew emotionally attached to helped with overcoming this barrier. But far from all Qunari are that lucky. Sten was so dejected after losing his sword that he let himself be caged - he didn't care about dying or anything anymore. He couldn't go home.
...Alright, where were we?
According to the wikipedia, Rasaan (the emissary of the Triumvirate)...took the control over Antaam? HOW? Qun is extremely rigid and allows no loopholes. For a change this massive there have to be some really, really good reasons - and I don't think the Antaam would have just accepted it. Without high enough approval, Sten only acknowledges Warden as the leader after they beat his ass in a duel.
Alright, let's say Rasaan gaslit the Antaam into believing she channels the way of the Qun and they ate it up. But why do we have warlords now?
Warlords with names, like Butcher? There are no names in the Qun. This is, once again, Tal-Vashoth behavior. But at the same time, they have access to qamek? What? How? Why? How does Par Vollen feel about their entire "body" fucking off? If they didn't sanction it, why aren't they stopping them???
It wouldn't be the first time for Bioware to twist their own lore and canon, but this one is legitimately migraine-inducing. Why not make a full-scale and sanctioned Qunari invasion, Qunari are like this! It's okay to make them the baddies, their ways are fucked up already and some positives don't make up for all the negatives! Don't just slap in a bunch of guys literally called "the army" and say "Nah, not all Qunari guys, these are just military acting on their own despite their lifestyle being all about following the system and doing your strictly established duties"

WEEKLY DORYM MOMOS N OTHER STUFF!!! (in no particular order)))
the chemistry between bells hells and the mighty nein is just so good. i had an absolute blast watching
the settle nod orym gives when jester says dorian is “really handsome” when shaking dorian’s hand
”mr. dorian” cad says when calling over to dorian, who looks a little startled at the professional nickname
dorian nodding in agreement to orym’s plan, as he normally does.
the way dorian tries to show off his abs next to beau after orym asks her what her routine is. the laughter afterwards when he gets embarrassed!!!!
jester winning over braius and getting more backstory than anyone else. so golden.
the jealousy of dorian when he sees how many people are in relationships and [not him] because he’s being a scaredy cat
caleb knocking sense into orym. CALEB KNOCKING SENSE INTO ORYM!!!
anybody else think dorian was trying to set up braius and veth really hard just to get him off of orym??
no thoughts just dorian and yasha bonding over music
the nervous glances robbie and liam share when they’re thinking about what to do with their characters …. especially after robbie tried to knock on orym’s door earlier in the episode but it was drowned out by shenanigans
the frantic inspiration dorian gives to braius when he’s painting orym
everyone getting so silent and so excited when dorian knocks on orym’s door. so is liam! his eyes light up immediately!
the whole confession scene was just so, so, so good. so beautifully well done. it made sense for both characters, and honestly so satisfying to see the moment happen after three years of consecutive pining/yearning. dorian giving orym the chance to make his own choices, and orym curling up in dorian’s embrace immediately just to be there,,, “not wanting to spoil the moment”. some of my favorite lines though, “let me comfort you for once,” from dorian; unaware that he WAS[is] in fact orym’s form of comfort but also implying that dorian finds immense comfort in orym, and orym’s “this is okay.” accepting the fact he is in love with dorian, finally, and truly. INTERLOCKING THEIR FINGERS. sound familiar??? something he couldn’t do with will in the vision???? but he instead does it now with dorian????? uuuuuhghhhhghhhhhh …. dorian fantasizing about them before falling asleep to the sound of orym’s breathing,,, orym staying awake longer to once again watch dorian sleep before passing out too.
also the fact the confession scene wasn’t too dramatic but still surprising and amazingly done just makes that feel so much more REAL. like how REAL LIFE confessions would be with highly traumatized people. not even mad they didn’t kiss yet because boy… just—- ugjjjjhh it was so beautiful, so raw. and it was robbie’s first time doing a romance roleplay too!!!
in the cooldown and [from introspection] robbie says dorian is very inexperienced with love and the feeling of it- since he was sheltered for so long; so orym is basically his first love(but dorian is just also super nervous and respectful towards will and orym’s relationship so that explains why he was so careful about expressing himself too.) and liam mentions orym was too shy to do anything himself so that’s why he had his other character go in there and just slap him on the ass because he wanted orym to talk to dorian somehow. which means that both robbie(dorian) and liam(orym) WANTED to have that exact moment between them, BOTH WANTED them to talk. and also the entire cast was fawning over them, matt getting teary eyed and the girls whispering and laughing to each other, sam getting excited himself and tal just smiling like a dork. everyone was just so proud of them!
DORYM NATION HOW ARE WE FEELING FOR NEXT EPISODES??? IM SO EXCITED TO SEE THE AWKWARD LAUGHTER, LOVESICK FLIRTATION AND EVEN MORE FROM OUR FAVORITE BOYS now time to start the cycle again of waiting years for them to kiss (i hope not please god)

Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?
On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.
However, 60 remain in captivity [as of 02/09/24] (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.
Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.
As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.
They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

Hello! I am visiting Finland in a few months, and I always love seeing you talk about it and the culture there. I'm definitely excited to experience Finnish sauna. Also, ice cream! I want to try as many flavors as I can before I leave! I was wondering if you had any advice for someone visiting for the first time? How to not be rude, or foods and such to definitely try? Or just anything that comes to mind.
(Also, I love Death-Head's Deal. Alrick is the best, and every update makes me so happy. The characters are all so interesting and make me want to know more about them. I think my favorite is Grimm, especially when he's with Pearl.)
I hope you'll have a wonderful trip in Finland! The country is very safe so you can be at ease in public places. If you lose something, Finns will try to deliver it back to you.
I always say that if you are familiar how to travel in Japan in a way that you are polite, the same rules apply to Finland. This country is often called the Japan of Nordics. The mentality and what is considered polite and what rude is very same between these two nations.
POLITE WAYS TO TRAVEL IN FINLAND
Leave people mind their own businesses. Don't be overly familiar. Finns are friendly but a bit reserved and need a lot of personal space around them.
If you need help, ask anyone, they will help and not be bothered.
In Helsinki, always stand on the escalator on the right hand side.
Don't be noisy in public places, including public transport.
Expressing emotions openly is considered rude, especially in public places.
Silence is polite and not a sign of boredom or someone wanting to get rid of you.
Be honest. When you ask from a Finn "How is it going?" they will honesty tell you how it is going and expect the same from you.
If you want to politely ask for something like in a cafe, use a word kiitos (thank you). We don¨t have a word for please. (Like "One coffee, kiitos" or "a ticket to airport, kiitos"). Kiitos is not necessary, Finns don't usually use it either but we just ask what's needed.
SHOES OFF INDOORS!!
In public transport and in public transport spots, leave space around other people when waiting for the transit and being in the transit. Sit next to someone only if there are no empty seats.
Tumblr media
(Finns waiting for a bus and giving personal space for each other)
In Helsinki, you can buy public transport tickets, including 1-13 day tickets, from R-kioski kiosks alongside the ticket machines. You'll find one from the airport, too. Note that some ticket machines do not accept cash - in that case, go to R-kioski kiosk. There's one near to every train station in Helsinki if you don't know where to look.
To get to central Helsinki from the airport, you will need an ABC ticket. If you have to go only to Tikkurila to change a train, you will need a BC ticket. Remember to validate it by showing it to the card reader in the train/bus. If you travel around a one zone, you will still need a two zone ticket because singular zone tickets don't exist. Like in the central zone A you will still need to buy a AB ticket, in the B zone you will need a AB or a BC ticket etc. More ticket information at hsl.fi
If you arrive to Helsinki but are going to go somewhere else in Finland, buy your train tickets in advance. Otherwise, the tickets can be 3 times more expensive. Buy your long train tickets from vr.fi For short distances like 1-2 hours, you might also want to try Onnibussi, which is really cheap, starting from 2€/journey. You can travel long distances with Onnibussi, too.
From the airport, both train tracks go to central Helsinki. From the central railway station, trains P and I both go to airport. If you want to use taxi, order Uber, Yango or Bolt as those are the cheapest ones to use. Note that they are still rather expensive.
If you have time and you are in Helsinki, consider popping at Estonia! There's a daily big ferry running between Helsinki and Tallinn with 20-25€. Buy your tickets to Tallinn from Eckerö Line or from Tallink Silja Line
If you are in Turku, you can make a day trip to Stockholm, Sweden! Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line operate between Turku and Stockholm.
Pretty much everyone speaks English so you'll be okay!
It's safe to drink tap water. If you want to buy water from the store, hiilihapoton is still water and hiilihapotettu is sparkling water.
In grocery stores, all allergens are listed on the price labels. L = lactose free with 0% lactose, VL = low in lactose (lactose content 1-4)%, M = dairy free, G = gluten free, V = vegan (can contain egg).
You can get anything you can imagine lactose free and there's a great selection of gluten free and vegan food, too, including in restaurants.
Here are some tips where to visit if you come to Helsinki! Mind you that central Burger King is closed.
Ask if you need/want to know something else :3

Hello fans of Re: Dracula who were introduced to fiction podcasts through the updates from our good friend Jonathan Harker! Now that the story's over (sob!), would you like some recommendations for some other audio dramas that you might enjoy, made by some of the folks who worked on the podcast?
Jonathan Sims, who played our local phonograph enthusiast, is the writer of the hugely popular horror podcast, The Magnus Archives. The Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute records statements made by members of the public, detailing strange encounters with the supernatural. What soon becomes clear is that these statements do not describe separate and unrelated events, and a bigger and horrific picture begins to emerge. Also appearing as recurring characters in this series are both Sasha Sienna and Alasdair Stuart.
Karim Kronfli is a prolific voice actor, and while he might be best known for his roles in both Re: Dracula and The Magnus Archives, he has voiced a wide range of characters in many different fiction podcasts. Out of all the ones he's appeared in, I would personally recommend urban fantasy anthology series, Unseen. The unseen world exists alongside ours, but only a few humans can see it. It's a world where magic and magical creatures exists, and Karim's character tells his story in episode 7, titled We Ourselves.
Beth Eyre and Felix Trench played twins Antigone and Rudyard Funn in Wooden Overcoats, a British sitcom set on the tiny fictional island of Piffling, in the English Channel. The twins run a funeral parlor together, the only one on the island, until a newcomer arrives. Eric Chapman (played by Tom Crowley) sets up a much more successful funeral parlor, and the story is narrated by the Funns' house mouse, Madeline.
Alan Burgon plays the Interviewer in The Amelia Project. The Amelia Project is a secret organisation, and clients come to them looking for their help in faking their deaths. The Interviewer listens to each client's story, before concocting unique and often elaborate ways in which they will stage their deaths, before being reborn into a new identity.
David Ault is also a very recognisable voice to anyone who spends a considerate amount of time listening to fiction podcasts, and The Kingmaker Histories feels like an appropriate choice here. A weird steampunk series set in the Valorian Socialist Republic in 1911 , this story involves found family, its own intriguing magic system, and being gay and doing crime.
Our favourite cowboy, Giancarlo Herrera, plays one of the protagonists in sci-fi action/thriller, Primordial Deep. Spinner is part of a team which is sent deep beneath the sea to investigate the resurgence of creatures thought to be long-extinct. There's plenty of horror to be had here, as something ancient is stirring in the depths of the ocean.
As for the crew? Tal Minear works on so many podcasts, and if you like fantasy stories, I would recommend the delightfully lighthearted Sidequesting, which follows new adventurer Rion, as they help people on their travels. If you would like some more horror, there's their spoiler-driven anthology series, Someone Dies in This Elevator.
Hannah Wright's Inn Between is a fantasy series based on D&D. Each episode follows a party as they meet in the Goblin's Inn, in between adventures, as the tavern follows them around wherever they go.
Stephen Indrisano's upcoming docu-horror Shelterwood promises to be a series which explores the horror of suburbia, as it follows one man's quest to find his missing sister. Until this is released, I would recommend Do You Copy, in which Stephen plays one of the protagonists. This found footage horror series follows the events which unfold after the closure of Red Tail National Park, and the people who were left inside the park, after its mysterious closure.
Ella Watts is regarded as a walking encyclopedia of all things audio fiction, and has worked on several high-profile projects, including directing both Doctor Who: Redacted and Marvel Move. Her upcoming Camlann is a post-apocalyptic series due to be released next year, inspired by Arthurian legends and British folklore. She is also the executive producer of Tin Can Audio's (who are also producing Camlann) beautiful experimental series, The Tower. The protagonist of this story, Kiri, leaves her life behind to climb an impossibly high tower, making phonecalls along the way.
Newt Schottelkotte's Where The Stars Fell is a supernatural fantasy set in the town of Jerusalem, Oregon. Cryptozoologist Dr Edison Tucker arrives in the town to carry out some research, and meets her roommate, author Lucille Kensington. There's so much more to this strange town than first meets the eye, with a huge revelation at the end of season one.
If you're new to fiction podcasts, welcome! I hope this short (ish!) and very much non-comprehensive list gave you some ideas of what to listen to next!
