   “Alright Nodoka, see you in a bit, we’ll be twenty minutes tops-” her Mother told her, standing in the threshold of the front door and then bumping into Asumi behind her, “oh good timing, Asumi, come inside, I’ll tell you as well.”

   Latte yipped excitedly.

   Asumi gave a small smile and was permitted to pass by both Hanadera parents. It was a tight fit in the front of the house with all of them, and Latte, clogging it up. Nodoka’s Mother started again.

   “I’m going to collect the Christmas cake I ordered, your dad is going to pick up the carpool, and then we’ll all have a great afternoon together. Some of our coworkers might start arriving before we get back, please introduce yourselves and welcome them. We shouldn’t be longer than twenty minutes.”

   “Understood, let’s all have fun tonight.” Nodoka beamed.

   Her Mother smiled exhaustedly and could only hope so.

   “See you when we get back, oh, and please don’t touch the afternoon tea until we get back.”

   “We get it, we get it, go and hurry up so you and Dad can put on the best work Christmas party ever!” Nodoka encouraged her parents.

   “Thanks, sweetheart, we’ll try.” her Father told her.

   He kissed her goodbye and then left with his wife. Asumi let go of her breath.

   “Wow, that was a lot. They seemed stressed.” she sighed, a touch worried.

   “They’ll be alright once they’re ready.” Nodoka replied and then giggled. “It was divine timing for you to take Latte on a walk to tire her out whilst we set up here. C’mon, I’ll show you those treats we’re not allowed until everyone’s here.”

   Asumi laughed.

   She was let into the house a bit further now and though she had only been gone with Latte an hour, the house had transformed some for this party. It was the end of the year and it was time to celebrate. As Hanadera Takeshi was an architect and the designer of his own house, his coworkers had suggested he use the opportunity of a work party to commend his work. 

   He didn’t disagree with the idea, though hiring out a venue in the city would have been much easier but the easy way out was the coward's way out. He was proud of his house now ten months on from being fully erected and wanted it to be known. So, he put himself and Yasuko up for the job of organising the annual Christmas party.

   And now, the house was lit gently with fairy lights and adorned with other festive decorations to welcome the guests to soon arrive. Red ribbons were hung up as streamers, wreaths were fixed to the walls and candles lit. The living room had been pushed aside and a table was wrapped in a festive cloth, now festooned with all of the Hanadera cooking - and some purchases, too. There was a charcuterie board, devilled eggs, and some sugar cookies, too. It looked delicious and the crowning achievement would be the Christmas cake that Nodoka’s mother had commissioned from the local bakery.

   But what really caught Asumi’s eye was a little lone flower hung above a doorway. The leaves reminded her of fir with how grey-green and bristled they were but she didn’t recognise the pearl-like flowers that it blossomed with.

   “What’s that?” she asked, pointing to it.

   “Mistletoe.” Nodoka giggled.

   Asumi shook her head, “Isn’t it poisonous?”

   “Eh, it’s harmless.” Nodoka shrugged but her expression was oddly giddy.

   Making it clear to Asumi that Nodoka knew something that she didn’t.

   Asumi glanced at it again. It did not look very alive and so long as no one ate it, it was obvious that it was purely ornamental. Its leaves hung over the doorway, it was unlikely someone would even touch it even if they were tall. She hummed in thought.

   “Do you want to know something special about mistletoe…?” Nodoka asked invitingly, looking at Asumi out of the corner of her eye, uncharacteristically cheeky.

   “I would love to, Nodoka.” Asumi replied.

   Nodoka smiled and her expression softened. That was more like her as she took her sweet time to reply, to gather her words. She licked her lips, there were stars all but in her eyes as she lovingly explained that something special she had alluded to.

   “There’s a tradition surrounding mistletoe. You know what the Healing Garden knows, correct? Then it makes sense you wouldn’t know this western tradition that when there’s mistletoe hung up… Those who stand under it, must kiss.” 

   “Oh.” Asumi swallowed thickly. Her heart skipped a beat.

   “Heh. Yeah.” Nodoka replied. “Mum put it up because a lot of the coworkers that Dad has are married, or bringing their partners. She thought it would be sweet to set up a photo opportunity, or just an excuse for PDA since it's the silly season and everything.”

   “I see.” Asumi replied as she mulled over the elaboration of Nodoka’s explanation of the tradition.

   So it was normal, to be expected somehow. That assuaged her, somehow, as she made the decision to look at the mistletoe once more.

   Asumi checked where they were. Exactly as she thought, as though lured into a trap. She and Nodoka were right under the mistletoe. Together. Not exactly shoulder to shoulder given the height difference between them but close enough for Asumi to feel more than just the thrum of the house’s central heating. Something else, just as warm, perhaps more loving.

   “Would you… would you like to?” Nodoka asked.

   Bold. So very bold, Asumi couldn’t help but falter as she met Nodoka’s eyes. They shouldn’t. They really shouldn’t.

   Latte barked, surprising them both but Asumi could hear the encouragement in Latte’s voice.

   “It’s tradition. It can’t be helped.” Asumi shrugged.

   “Exactly.” Nodoka replied but she was nervous.

   She fidgeted where she stood, shifting her weight from one foot to the other, stretching her hands behind her back, fingers intertwined. She felt the same as Asumi, that there was rightful hesitation and yet… Their feelings, unspoken as they were, were very much on the same understanding.

   They both knew that it wouldn’t last - and nor that it should. Yet they felt what they felt, nonetheless. 

   Nodoka’s companionship was something that was very precious to Asumi. She would be adrift in this world without Nodoka’s leadership. Asumi was an echo of someone else, no real experience or memory but she cherished what she had so far of this world with Nodoka by her side. 

   Yet it was tentative, too. Ephemeral. At some point, Asumi would return to where she had come: the magic of the Healing Garden. Nodoka would grow up and retire her identity as Cure Grace as the fight would be over and she could focus on being herself. A normal girl. She could enjoy the youth she had been thus far robbed of due to being host to the parasite which was Daruizen, now an emissary of the war she had been unfortunately destined to fight.

   “Let’s try, just this once. I’ve always been curious about kissing. It’ll both be our first.” Nodoka murmured.

   Asumi agreed with a hum.

   She turned slightly, more towards Nodoka. Nodoka got up on her tiptoes and Asumi held her hands for balance. They closed their eyes, their breaths intermingled as they drew closer and closer until… Their lips met with a kiss.

   The kiss they shared was petal soft. Nodoka’s lips were warm. Asumi was gentle, aware that her body and her movement had weight, that she was not merely the vessel for the winds but her own person. With likes, with dislikes, with the urge to kiss Nodoka harder and yet she resisted.

   As such, there wasn’t much to their kiss in the end. Neither knew what they were doing, just that it had to be brief, just enough to fulfil the tradition and stave off how they felt in the longer term. As such, a bittersweetness pervaded beyond the warmth of how they nudged against one another in a chaste kiss.

   “Thank you, Asumi…” Nodoka whispered.

   She opened her eyes and let go of Asumi’s hands. Asumi let her. She lowered herself onto the balls of her feet and turned bashful. Her smile was not overly kiss swollen due to the minimalistic nature of it and yet, Nodoka glowed with joy.

   “That was lovely, Nodoka.” Asumi replied.

   “It really was, Asumi,” Nodoka demurely agreed, “I hope we have a lovely time tonight at the Christmas party. You should, um, take Latte to my room, by the way. That way she won’t be overwhelmed by the strangers who might start arriving soon.”

   “Ah, good idea.” Asumi agreed.

   She nodded and felt her heart quake ever so slightly. It was best to break it off, before either of them got too excited. This would be their little secret, all would go back to normal soon and they would put on their best, most generous face of hospitality soon. With the decorations on display and the food that had been prepared, it would no doubt be an easy feat to carry on with their feelings in denial. 

   Their kiss would neither make nor break the party about to ensue, Asumi was sure as she excused herself to go upstairs.

   But the mistletoe would know, their skin would remember the sensation of lip brushing against lip.

   And they would be more than enough for them both.
