THE PAST

There was no place better than her bed. Except the rink. 

While Takemichi went off to take Hinata on some bowling date, Takara took the chance to go to a skating rink. 

It was a bit busy, but Takara rented skates and for the first time felt like she could breathe again. She hates the decision she’s come to. She hates the fact that every strategy she can think of involves stringing Hanma along so she can have access to Kisaki. 

“Ugh.” 

She tries to shut her mind off and it works as she focuses on her turns, speeding along as she glides against the ice. She’s mildly aware of how people are starting to move out of the way as she does a simple axel jump. When she twists into a spin, all she can focus on are her movements and the way things feel. 

She eventually skids to a stop, feeling more like herself. Her mother had forced her into ice skating in return for playing hockey. She never thought it would work like this. The repeated motions work better than any therapy.

He grins at that. “How long you been skating?”

“Forever.” She says it because it’s the truth…and not just because she can’t actually recall when she started. She forces that thought of her head. “What are you doing here?”

“Should be asking you that question,” the blond in the back says. He’s not glaring at her but he’s watching her carefully. 

She frowns, confused at what he means.

The one with the braids explains. “You’re in our territory, Toman.”

“Ah. I’m not part of Toman,” she says quickly. “I was just looking for a good rink.”

“No? You tried to save one of them.” He leans a little closer as his gaze wanders down. It doesn’t feel creepy, not like the last time she had been corned by a bunch of unnamed wannabe gangsters. She thinks of her aunt and the points of a body that were softest and would hurt the most.

“Yeah. I’m not a fan of stupid choices and you boys tend to make a lot of them,” she nods towards them. The one with the braids laughs. “I’m Hanagaki Takara,” she introduces herself. 

“Haitani Ran,” the braids says back. “That’s my brother, Rindou. We run Roppongi.” 

“Impressive.” Or it would be if she had any real clue what that meant. She knows that it’s the kind of reaction they’re looking for. “You here to skate?”

“Just to see you, beautiful,” Ran says. He’s older than her. They both are. But she remembers the warning Draken gave about the bet about her. 

“If you’re here to win a bet by sleeping with me, I’m not interested.” 

The blond in the back, Rindou, laughs at that. He looks at her with a little more interest, not sexually, just in the sense that she’s more than a pretty face with a stupid brother. 

Ran grins at her. “Heard about that already?”

“I’m a girl. We like gossip.” She shrugs, playing into the common misconception. 

“That all you like?” He asks, eyeing her carefully. 

“Who knows? I’m full of surprises.” 

“I bet. Let us take you out. Show you Roppongi. Properly.” 

“I’m busy,” she says, skating back slightly. She doesn’t go far, keeping her eyes on them. Ran leans forward and rests his arms on the sideboards, watching her. “Besides, I already told you, I’m not interested.”

“We’re not here for the bet,” Ran calls out to her. “Heard you were in our area and wanted to meet you. Actually get your name, darling.” 

She rolls her eyes. “Well, you got that.”

“We did, didn’t we?” He looks back at his brother and grins. “Maybe we just wanted to know what kinda girl shows up at a gang fight for her brother.” 

“The kind who knows her brother is an idiot,” she retorts back. “Besides, you left before the cops showed up.”

“You warned us,” Rindou says. 

“Sure,” she shrugs. “You let me sit with you. Least I could do since I was breaking things up.” She skids to a stop and looks at them. “Did you tell anyone I was the one who called the cops?”

“Now why would we do that?” Ran asks. He looks unbothered by it, eyes half-lidded as he watches her. “No one on our end said shit. Not if they want to keep using their limbs.” 

That seems like an extreme reaction. “Alright,” she nods. “Good.” The last thing she needs is someone being pissed she ended that fight. Especially Kisaki. 

“Come on,” Ran says. “Get changed and let us take care of you.”

Takara hesitates. She doesn’t know these boys and the fact they’re in a gang that isn’t the same one her brother runs with is a slight against them. 

“Just let us show our appreciation…for the warning.”

“You’re persistent, I’ll give you that.”

“Ran gets what he wants,” Rindou adds. “Just say yes so he stops pestering.”

Ran looks back. “I’m not pestering, I’m flirting.”

“Ugh,” Rindou gives a disgusted look at that and Takara can’t help but laugh. The interaction feels so familiar, like she’s used to seeing brothers interact and tease like this. She can’t remember when though. Or why it’s so comforting. 

“Give me ten minutes.”

Walking with the two brothers was strange. 

She wasn’t used to people actively moving out of her way unless she looked like she was going to run them down in her skates, but they did for the Haitanis. Her skates are tucked away in their bag, slung over her shoulder and she’s been shoved in the middle between them. Ran talks, pointing out the best parts of the area that they pass while Rindou walks in silence. 

“Why aren’t you asking me about Toman?” she asks once they’re sitting down in a cafe. She’s ordered a sandwich and tea while Rindou complained about being the third wheel. Ran ignores him so she does too. 

“Don’t care about Toman,” Ran says with a shrug. He leans forward, resting his elbow on the table and putting his chin in his hand as he stares at her. “Just you.”

She snorts at that. “I doubt that.” 

“I’m not interested in their territory. If we wanted it, we’d already have it.”

“That’s awfully confident of you,” Takara points out. She pauses to thank the waitress who drops off the food. “How’d you manage to control this area? You said it’s just the two of you?”

“That’s right,” Ran says. “We have men under us, but we control it all.” 

“And is that the long-term goal?” she asks, taking a bite of the sandwich. She’s starving after the time she spent skating. “Like, is being a gang leader what you want to do?” Takara is honestly curious and it’s not like she has anything better to do right now. 

They look at her in surprise. 

“I…wanna do music,” Rindou admits first. 

“Really? That’s cool. What type of music?”

He looks surprised that she turns her attention to him and is waiting as she takes another bite. He glances at his brother before he answers. It almost seems as if he’s not used to the attention. “Uh…dance. Like electronic. What you hear in the clubs.”

“I’ll take your word for it. I’ve never been to a club. Parties? Yes but actual clubs, no. Do you have your own equipment? Are you looking into getting some?”

“You see awfully interested in Rindou’s hobbies,” Ran cuts in. 

Takara shrugs. “Everyone should have a hobby. Something they like to do that actually brings them joy, whether or not others see value in it. For me, it’s hockey and skating. For your brother it’s music. And you?”

“I prefer to spend my free time in my bed.”

“That’s fair. Bed is the best,” Takara agrees. She sighs, thinking of her own bed. When she’s not running around and filling her time with sports, she too prefers to be sleeping. 

“Yeah? I’d love to introduce you to mine.” 

Takara feels herself flush which is a surprise in itself. She’s not usually flustered by boys, too used to dealing with them. Ran’s grin sharpens as he watches her hand raise to cover her face, wishing she could stop herself from reacting. 

“No thanks, I’ll stick to my own.”

“Then can I come try it myself? See what all the fuss is about,” Ran teases.

“Sure, you can meet my parents too. I’m sure they’d love you,” Takara says dryly. She watches as Ran nearly recoils at the thought and it’s enough to make both her and Rindou laugh. 

He recovers quickly, playing it up as if it was intended to be a joke. The atmosphere eases, turning into something more playful and Takara watches as the brothers tease each other and her. She gives as good as she gets and she thinks it helps keep them on even footing. It’s no longer completely an interrogation over her and her motives or an attempt for Ran to get into her pants. They feel like old friends and for once it’s soothing to have this feeling without the overwhelming reminder that people only interact with her because of who her brother is. This is only just because of her and who she is.

When they leave, Takara is back stuck between them and finds herself comfortable with the way Rindou repeatedly nudges into her and Ran takes her skates to carry for her. He tries once to weave their fingers together and hold her hand and when she pulls away, he doesn’t try again. She likes that. 

They lead her to a train station, slowing before they get close as if they can delay the inevitable. She’s already been gone longer than she planned, but no one’s looking for her. Her phone is silent so she knows the future is still secure. 

“Give me your phone,” Ran demands. She pulls it out and hands it over without a second thought. It’s not like he can do much more than break it and even if that happens, she’s confident enough that she could slip away if she felt like she was in danger. She doesn’t though. He calls not only his phone but Rindou’s as well to ensure they have her number. He grins at her. “Now we can set up that date.”

“What date?” she asks, looking at him amused. 

“The one we’ll have when you decide it’s what you want.” He says it with all confidence, as if it’s set in stone and he hasn’t placed the choice in her hands again. 

“We’ll see,” Takara says, trying not to smile. She’s not actually used to interest like this. Rindou rolls his eyes, but before either of them can continue, the moment is broken by the sound of a motorcycle racing towards them. It stops on the street next to them and Takara’s mood drops instantly the moment she sees who’s driving. Both the Haitanis have stepped forward, blocking her from their view. 

“What the fuck is Toman doing here?” Ran asks, tone far more polite than his words. She can practically feel the tension under their skin. 

“Just picking up something that belongs to me,” Hanma replies. He sounds too cheery and she bristles at the presumed ownership. 

“Fuck off,” she snaps. Regardless of whether or not she’ll give him what he wants in order to take care of her brother, she’s not allowing anyone to treat her like property. 

“You heard her,” Ran says, drawing a baton and expanding it. “Fuck off.” 

“Just tryin’ to take care of you, princess,” Hanma says, ignoring Ran. “Let me give you a lift home.”

“How’d you even know I was here?” she asks, stepping out behind the brothers. “I didn’t tell anyone where I was going.” 

He grins at her. “You think I wouldn’t keep an eye on my girl?”

“Not yours,” she says. His eyes darken, unimpressed, but before he can respond, she turns to the brothers and continues. “Thank you. I had a good time. Text me.” She looks back at Hanma who’s still seated on the ugliest design of a motorcycle she’s seen yet. She gives him the finger and walks into the station, ignoring the boys and their standoff.

When she gets home, she catches Takemichi cleaning the mark on his face in the mirror. 

“What happened now?”

He jolts in surprise as she leans against the doorframe. When he looks at her, she straightens, catching the look in his eyes. 

“Takara!” He drops the cloth, moving forward to hug her. “You’re okay!” 

She hugs back automatically, relaxing slightly in his hold. This is her brother. Hers. “You’re back?”

“Yeah. The future…you won’t believe what happened.”

“Tell me. And what happened to your face? I thought you went bowling. Are you that bad at it?”

“What? No!” 

“Then what?” Takara picks up the cloth and takes over cleaning the blood off of him before grabbing some ice. He follows her into the kitchen. 

“Just a fight coming back. Ran into a new gang.”

“A new one?”

“One I’ve never met before,” he admits. “But they were there in the future. Part of…Toman. Or whatever Toman it was. I…I nearly died.”

Takara sits across from him. “Again?” She inhales sharply, her mind drawing her back to Baji’s funeral. “What the fuck happened in the future, Take?”

Kisaki and the pursuit of love to fill the lack of it

Manga spoilers

When Takemichi finally gets to confront Kisaki ; he gets his answer as to why Kisaki did all of what he did. And like Takemichi, we get angry and confused. Is this selfish childish reason really why he did all of that ? And the answer is yes, obviously. But it’s not that shallow, nor is it Wakui being lazy.

He wanted Hinata’s love.

Did he ? From what we learn from his and Hinata’s flashbacks, Kisaki was considered ‘creepy’ and ‘heartless’ by other children. Hinata was the only one to talk to him (and willingly!) and saw him as a good kid – even after they stopped seeing each others. She wholeheartedly believes Kisaki is a good person and that he and Takemichi would get along and is shocked when Takemichi tells her Kisaki’s part of a gang, saying “No way ! It doesn’t suit him !”. Which is the direct opposite of how Takemichi, and we the readers, react. “Kisaki, a good guy… ? There’s no way. He’s the inhuman bastard that killed Hina. “

Kisaki’s “Hinata would definitely liked a prodigy like me” isn’t that much an implausible way of thinking (for a child lacking love). Why would Hinata interact with him if she didn’t love him ? It couldn’t be just because she was a nice person, nobody else interacted with him. It didn’t seem like it was out of pity either. They even walked home together and were neighbourgs. It’s a very simple-minded thought – but Kisaki didn’t know better, and never got to. After all, he’s antagonized since the start by most characters, including the protagonist whom we readers follow, and the narrative. For good reasons, yes. But instead of trying to stop everything he planned, it would’ve been a lot more effective to learn about him, to get close to him, and not as to gain informations to use later to win, but in a way to actually form a deep, meaningful, true friendship with him. Because Kisaki doesn’t have friends. Mikey’s a pawn. Hanma’s a pawn. Izana’s a pawn. And they all know it – they accepted Kisaki’s scheems because they had something to gain for it. They’re all relationship built on a deal : I gain something I want and you gain something you wish in return. Mikey wants darkness to consume him, and wants Kisaki to be that part of him (his moon – which btw, good nod to the Pierrot/Kisaki comparaison) whereas Kisaki wants to be Japan #1 delinquent and he needs Mikey’s charisma to do so; Hanma wants his world to stop being so dull and Kisaki gives him that, he makes Hanma’s life as colorful as a circus (once again, the Pierrot/Kisaki comparaison never stops, Wakui really wants you to know his vilain is a clown) and Kisaki needs a pawn who would do everything he asks – and a pawn he can put the blame on ; Izana needs Kisaki to ‘satisfy his heart with his malice’ and to gift him a depressed/grieving Mikey he can ‘tame’ whereas Kisaki needs Izana to get to Mikey even after the Christmas incident and Emma’s murder. So yeah, not friends. Acquaintances ; business partners at best. Hinata then remains the only person who willingly went to talk to him out of kindness and nothing else, she didn’t have any motives.

So Kisaki clings on her. The idea of her. Somebody being nice to him. When nobody else does, nobody else ever did. Does he do anything to deserve kindness ? Why would he need to deserve kindness ? Since when is kindness deserved ? He plans a lot of messed up things, but until Baji’s death, none of them succeeds. Then again, would’ve being kind to him prevented all of what he plotted ? And again, he started being a delinquent solely because Takemichi was one.

Stalking Takemichi already wasn’t a good sign, but that didn’t necessarily mean Kisaki would one day become a merciless murderer. But then Takemichi said he’d be the top delinquent in Japan which prompted Kisaki to research about them and what it meant to be one. Because if Hinata loves Takemichi and Takemichi plans on becoming Japan #1 delinquent, then Kisaki becoming Japan #1 delinquent will make Hinata loves him. She has to. He believes in it so hard, he doesn’t even try to reconnect with her even as a childhood acquaintance during the years it takes him to reach to the top. No, he reaches the top and straight away go ask Hinata in marriage. And the moment she rejects him – even though he’s Japan #1, even though he did everything to undoubtedly gain her love, even though Takemichi isn’t there anymore – he has her killed. Because the only person in his life who has been kind to him, wasn’t anymore and he, after a decade of doing everything he thoughts he has to do to gain her love, couldn’t deal with it. That’s how Takemichi ‘betrayed’ him – Takemichi became his model, a hero, and yet he took the only thing good in his life away (without even being aware of it).

Kisaki doesn’t see himself as a victim – he’s very aware of everything he does. He manipulates, he kills, he doesn’t have an ounce of remorse about it… Yet, he still calls himself a Pierrot. And Pierrot is defined by his unrequited love for Columbine who herself loves Harlequin (who loves Columbine back) which makes him a sad clown. Pierrot is also naive, light-hearted and trustworthy. Which is definitely not Kisaki as a delinquent, but may have been Kisaki in his childhood.

Takemichi only starts to think of him as a human being and not an ‘inhuman bastard’ after his death. Takemichi wants to face him again, because he actually wants to get to know Kisaki. Even if he hates him with everything he has. The talk they had was too short.

At the end of the day, does that change the fact it was incredibly selfish and childish ? No. But Tokyo Revengers is based upon relationships and the impact people have in other people’s life so for it to have its main antagonist have no meaningful relationship at all, and it being the reason why he turned out that way, makes perfect sense. (it’s also the same with Izana who didn’t think he had anyone until the end where he realizes he did, he does, Taiju who thought he only had his siblings to realize he actually technically didn’t have anyone, Hanma whom we don’t see close to anyone but Kisaki (and that means something), Kazutora who found himself with only Baji at some point, and even Sanzu who obsesses over Mikey because in his mind he can’t rely on anyone else anymore – but all of them at least had someone in some way)

Edit: In the Final Timeline, this lack of meaningful relationship that Kisaki has ceases to exist. He becomes friend with Takemichi, Mikey, Toman.. And so he has no reason to obsess over Hinata

His vision of Hinata and their relationship most likely came from his idea of how reality works - a very stereotypical one. They're both childhood friends and then they'll fall in love and he'll go to work and she'll be a housewife and he'll be like everyone else, he'll achieve what everybody else has and/or he will copy his parents/what japanese society (and not only it) deemed a 'normal family'. They'll have one or two kids and it'll be the way it has always been.

Kisaki doesn't know much about interpersonal relationships, so he has a very stereotypical vision of them

𐙚⋆.˚ CHAPTER FIVE.

your dad always told you to stand your ground. 

a few weeks passed, and you were finally being released from the hospital. you felt good. the sun was bright, and the birds chirped, and you haven't felt any more alive. you dressed in the clothes your mom brought you during one of her visits, and she took home the flowers for you too! you pulled your shirt down, smoothing out the slight wrinkles, and stared at yourself. your bruises faded, and the mark from the bud healed slowly. your head no longer hurt, and your ears didn't ring. not to say that you were completely in the clear, but you felt amazing. 

so you gathered the last few things of yours. your phone, and charger, and grabbed the stuffed animal that was given to you by mikey and draken. holding it in your arms, you left the room and smiled at the nurses who waved at you, " have a good day. " you spoke to them first, " and thank you for taking care of me. " you waved to them as they said ' it's not a problem! take it easy '. you stopped at the elevator, and pressed the down arrow. there, you waited, with a thankful smile on your face. you stepped inside the second it opened, and you pressed the button for the lobby. 

as you entered the lobby and walked through the glass doors, you stopped in place, once more, as you were greeted. " welcome back, (y/n)! " your friends. hinata, takemichi, mikey, draken ... and another boy that went by the name shouji. shouji was a good friend of yours. he was a total idiot, but he was your favorite kind of idiot. he did stupid things to make you smile and laugh. he would purposely arrive at school with his tie around his neck because he ' didn't know how to tie it '.he always met you in homeroom, with that dorky smile, and a finger pointed at his tie, " i need help again~ " and you always helped him. 

shouji was a normal guy. he lived with his grandparents, and he had the cutest gap between his teeth. he had light brown hair that curled slightly, and eyes that reminded you of chocolate. they sparkled all the time, and he had a small birthmark on the bridge of his nose. he wasn't all that tall, but taller than you, and a bit taller than takemichi. he was average, a person that people would bypass and overlook. and yet you saw him every time. 

" you guys ... " you smiled at them, bear dangling in your arms as they laughed at your struck reaction. hinata held a small strawberry shortcake, and shouji held onto a few balloons. draken and mikey stood there cooly, with a grin on their faces. and still, you approached them with the largest grin, " you didn't have too ... " you admitted, " we know, we know. " hinata replied, " but we wanted to! we're glad that you're okay! " hinata hummed. and she was right. maybe you shouldn't be so distant when they want to just be there for you. a friend. there was a hand on your shoulder and you looked to the side, and shouji smiled. 

" here. it's from grandpa and nana ... " he offered a small yellow envelope and you took it. " they were really worried. " he added, " they insisted. " the support. they supported you so much. you admired the yellow envelope that read ' (y/n) ' and you felt yourself grow emotional. and yet you swallowed your tears and nodded, " tell them i said thank you so much... " and he gave a proud thumbs-up, " of course! " your eyes looked over at mikey and draken, and you gave them a pleasing smile. " alright, " you spoke up loudly, " let's cut this cake! there's a cafe nearby, let's enjoy it there? " because there's no way you'll eat all of that cake by yourself. 

the cake may have been small, but it would have served everyone there! and a slice for your mom and step-dad too. you knew she'd be here if she wasn't working herself so hard, and him too. they agreed, and the group of kids walked down the street. cars passed, and people rode their bikes. the group held a loud and busy conversation, and the sun seemed to shine even brighter. you were happy, and you wouldn't trade this moment for the world. you all entered and found a perfect window seat that sat the large group, and the cake sat in the middle of the table.

" oh! candles! the candles ! " hinata gasped, looking beside her to takemichi who quickly got them. " woah, woah, we can't use them in here 'ya know .. " draken seemed to be the most sensible one there, " relax ken-chin. let's live a little .. " mikey teased, patting the other on his shoulder. but it's true, you can't randomly light candles in the shop! and yet hinata looked so happy to stick four blue candles on the cake. and you didn't want to ruin her parade. draken seemed annoyed, and a bit stressed, and you wanted to agree with him, but everyone was so for it. " wait matches! we don't have any! " takemichi sighed as he looked in the bag, " they should have put some in there! " hinata frowned, and you felt a bit of relief. 

until there was a lighter flick, and the candles quickly began to burn. you looked over, and shouji grinned at his actions. " good job sho! " takemichi grinned, " okay quick! make a wish! " hinata smiled. your features lit up from the color of the flame, and you stared at the cake. " a wish ? it ... isn't my birthday, though ... " you replied with a modest smile. 

" wishes aren't just for birthdays! " hinata scolded you, " a wish is a wish. you can make one anytime during the year! " she was always so scary when she was persistent. " i wish every day for the safety of my friends. and it's not my birthday every day, now is it? " she tilted her head, and you shook your head timidly. " wishes eventually come true. so wish for something. anything. and i promise that it'll happen someday. " she was so comforting, and you smiled at her, then admired the necklace on her neck. hinata wouldn't lie. not to you, and not to anyone else. 

so you took a deep breath and thought for a moment. i wish ....

and you blew the candles out. the table cheered and clapped their hands as draken quickly fanned the smoke away. the candles were removed, and you were offered the knife to cut it. " here's to hoho's safe recovery! " mikey cheered, as you cut and dished out the fluffy cake. and the rest clapped. you felt so light. your chest was so empty, yet filled with love, and you couldn't hide the thankfulness on your face. you had to admit, you recovered this great because of them and their support. and you shared the afternoon enjoying the cake, and talking with one another.

and so once you returned to school, you were welcomed with open arms. a lot of your friends were glad that you were back and okay. word spread around the school that you fell and hit your head. so that was the cover-up? and yet ... for as long you were out, kiyomasa was nowhere to be found. you didn't care, honestly, but you couldn't help but be curious. after all, mikey did say that he'd handle the situation. did he kill him? no, no mikey ... didn't seem like that kind of guy. sure, he didn't bullshit, but ... would he really kill someone? he was kind to you. even that day when you went up against kiyomasa, he smiled at you and thus on.

but there was one aspect that you never seemed to ground yourself with. it was something you knew but didn't quite know. you never thought twice about mikey, nor draken. that day they kicked kiyomasa's ass ... the quick mannerism change for your boyfriend. mikey; someone he hated so much. and you didn't know how anyone could hate mikey. and then you managed to put two and two together. mikey must be the leader of toman, right? you didn't know much of the tokyo manji gang. you never cared for gangs, but your boyfriend was a part of it, and he always spoke shit about mikey. he never liked when people mentioned his name. 

and kiyomasa would never try to act properly with anyone unless they were superior to him. and he didn't like it when he was inferior to others. 

that complex of his will get him killed.

it was simple enough to grasp. despite your poor knowledge of gangs, you knew it wouldn't change your mind how you view them. but mikey and draken were kind. perhaps not all gangs were terrible, or maybe you didn't see their ugly side. either way, you still were grateful for them. you were still happy to call them your friends. gang or not. this was final. 

" ah, osamu darling, " your mother called from the kitchen, " can you go to the grocery store for me? " she placed a hand on her plump belly, and your step-father smiled, " of course i can. " he stood himself up from the chair he was sitting at, and you emerged from the corner, " i can go . " you smiled, " i'll get what's needed. " you offered, and your mother's smile softened. " are you sure, (y.n)? " osamu questioned, and you nodded. " of course! can you write a list for me to go by? " you asked, already dressed as your mother nodded, " thank you, hoho! "

you were fine with going since it was such a nice day out. besides, you didn't want your step-dad to overwork himself. " i owe you one ... " he was a bit on the loud side, and there was  ... something off about it. your eyes wandered for a second, and then stared at the text on his left sleeve that read ' eighth generation president '. 

" 'ya like what you see? " he asked cockily and you adverted your eyes, " no . " and he seemed offended, but played it off really. you took a step to the side, and began to walk away. as you did so, you took the second glance that you needed to look at the back of his uniform,

a name you didn't know about. but from his entire attitude, he must have been linked with some gang. and once he turned around he spoke again, " c'mon, don't play hard to get! let me take 'ya to lunch or somethin'! " he tried to catcall you, and you denied, " thank you but no. " and you headed off. was that the best idea? to turn your back to someone like him? you weren't sure, but you walked down the aisle and found the last item you needed. placing it in the bag, you then headed to the cash register to check out your items. 

the kind worker scanned your ingredients and smiled at you as she spoke the total. you grabbed the money pouch, and opened it " i'll be payin' for 'em . " the same voice from before spoke, and you squinted. you never wanted to punch someone dead in the face before. but he paid before you could say or do anything. " now join' me for lunch. " he repeated himself, " it ain't an option now . 'ya can't just ... let someone pay for your shit and not give somethin' in return. "

but he was persistent and potentially violent. so what did some gang leader want with a nobody like yourself?

SPOILERS THROUGH TR278!

I've been trying to digest the fact that in the final timeline Kisaki is supposedly not obsessive and violent anymore, so I came up with a theory that attempts to understand it.

I want to preface this with the obvious fact that having friends (particularly Takemichi) at a young age certainly benefited him, but it didn't feel like a complete explanation for how we went from a main antagonist to a silly little guy who's just a bit blunt sometimes. If he wasn't going to be obsessive and violent about Hina and Takemichi I would have guessed he'd become obsessive and violent about something/someone else.

We don't really know much about the final timeline, which is a bit frustrating, but what we do know is that in addition to Takemichi befriending Kisaki, Shinichiro lives.

So here's my theory: Kisaki was affected by Shinichiro's curse in the main timeline of the series. Since the curse and dark impulses weren't explained too precisely I can only speculate, but it seems that people near Shinichiro close to his time of death were affected. First, we have Mikey, who Shinichiro saved in exchange for the curse. Then, we have Kazutora, who was controlled by the dark impulses to karmically kill Shinichiro soon after he transferred his power to Takemichi.

Now, obviously we know Kisaki isn't someone who's even remotely impulsive (except for maybe when he has Hina and Takemichi killed, but even that would be a big stretch to call it impulsive), but maybe the darkness of the curse, not the impulsivity, manifested in Kisaki somehow, since his and Shinichiro's paths crossed on the day he met Takemichi. As Mikey says, the curse "affected everyone around him".

I think that Kisaki, already vulnerable to darkness due to his loneliness, became further corrupted by Shinichiro's curse. And on some level, I think he knew this, as there are a few hints.

Kisaki refers to himself as being a "supposed dark hero" in the Tenjiku battle. This always intrigued me because it's the only time he uses this term. He only ever refers to Takemichi as "hero", and in the Picaresque chapter, he says "I will never be the main hero". I can't say if he knew of any curse, but he realized that there was a darkness in himself that prevented him from being a "good" hero.

Additionally, we can recall that he called himself "the shadow that Toman casts". He says this because he's been given permission to "guide Mikey's darkness", but he also speaks quite similarly to Osanai before he even meets Mikey, when he says "the moon can't shine on its own". When he says this, he is referring to the fact that the shining moon must cast a shadow, a darkness, and that he is willing to be that darkness for Osanai. He uses the exact same metaphor for himself and Mikey later on.

This is important because it demonstrates that he didn't need Mikey to ask him to guide his darkness. Kisaki already embraced the role of the dark shadow by then.

When Mikey fires Kisaki, Kisaki doesn't only speak of his darkness just to appeal to Mikey, it's part of his character as a whole, and it's a running theme for him, just as it was for Mikey.

The metaphor and choice of the word "darkness" are reminiscent of the way Mikey describes a darkness in himself, and Kisaki speaking in this way prior to meeting Mikey is indicative of the fact that he already had a similar darkness inside of him. I think this was a deliberate choice made by the author, and not only for the sake of general character comparison.

I don't know if Kisaki would have known about a curse, especially because we don't even know how he knew about time leaping, but that's secondary to the fact that he knew he had a darkness regardless of how that came to be. And with the curse avoided and Takemichi befriending Kisaki, the sources of his loneliness and darkness were gone.

Of course, if Kisaki was affected by the curse, it begs the question why other characters were not (ie, Baji, Hinata), and honestly, I don't have a clue why that would be, so this weakens my theory a lot.

Nevertheless, in the new timeline where Shinichiro is alive, Mikey and Kazutora don't act with the same dark impulsivity as in the other timelines, and Kisaki isn't obsessive and violent. I found it hard to accept that Kisaki was so changed because we don't know the full story, and I wish I knew more, but I think this theory does an okay job at beginning to explain how he operates as a character. If the curse really did affect him, then you could say that he really was the shadow cast by Mikey, since the curse was born from saving him.

When you and Chifuyu walk out of the office, you reconvene with Mitsuya and Atsushi.

“Where the hell have you been? I thought you four went missing, too!” Naoto pipes up appearing from nowhere.

“Too?” you hum. “What do you mean?”

“Hina and Takemichi went out hunting this afternoon just a little while after you left. They still haven’t returned,” he explains.

“Well, what should we do? We can go out and look for them,” you suggest.

“Hey! Naoto! Y/N! Help!” Hinata’s voice suddenly interrupts. Your head whips over toward the airport entrance so fast your neck cracks. And when you see her, you notice Takemichi with blood pouring out of his side.

“Shit!” Naoto gasps as he rushes to their side. “Clear some space. Atsushi, find Takuya and grab my First Aid kit. Quick!”

“On it,” he nods before racing off.

Once the two of them return, Naoto is able to bandage Takemichi up. However, not before Takemichi falls unconscious.

“None of us are doctors,” Takuya shrugs. “I don’t know what else we can do.”

“Jesus, are there even any doctors anymore?” Chifuyu scoffs.

You and Hinata look at each other, both having the same idea.

“No,” you shake your head in her direction. “That’s not a good idea.”

“Y/N, he’s our only chance to help Takemichi. Please go with me.”

“Hina…”

“You promised Draken and Baji that you’d go back!” she continues to press.

“Who’re you talking about?” Chifuyu asks.

“Y/N and I know a nurse. He helped me once. He can definitely help Takemichi,” she blabs to the group.

“Goddammit,” you grumble to yourself. Now nobody’s going to take your side.

“I’ve got a car,” Mitsuya pipes up. “We can load him up and drive him over if you show me the way.”

“Woah, why the hell would we want you to go with us?! You just fucking kidnapped me!”

“It’s dark outside, almost midnight. You really think you’re going to find someone else out there willing to help you?” he rolls his eyes.

“I’ve got a car, too,” Akkun adds. “We can split up and all take a ride over. It might be smart to stick together since Y/N seems so apprehensive about the whole thing.”

“Are they hostile?” Naoto asks you. “Should we bring all our amm-“

“No,” you interrupt quickly. “No, you don’t have to hurt or threaten them. I’ll show you the way if that’s what Hina wants so badly. Just remember he’s a nurse, not a miracle worker.”

“Deal,” Hinata nods.

“And since we’re taking two cars we should probably set a ground rule,” Akkun interrupts.

“Like what?” Hinata shrugs.

“Like if something happens in one of the cars, the other group keeps going,” Akkun continues.

“Agreed,” you nod. “No sense in all of us dying.”

“But couldn’t we-“ Chifuyu starts.

“I’m in, too,” Hinata nods.

“Chifuyu, you’re in charge of the people you’re in the same car with. Not everyone, okay?” you then whisper to him.

“Yeah, got it,” he sighs.

About fifteen minutes later you, Mitsuya, Naoto, Chifuyu, and Peke J pile into Mitsuya’s car. Despite not wanting to be near Mitsuya, that’s exactly why you decided to stay close to him. Keep your enemies close, right?

Once you drive off, your car leaves the area first. Mitsuya starts to drive, following your direction, until he hears the sound of a car speeding up behind you. He checks the rearview mirror and sees a foreign car approaching.

“Get down!” he shouts just before gunshots ring out in the air. Mitsuya drives off as quickly as he can, but one of his tires pops.

Mitsuya starts swerving, unable to get out of range from those guns, until the car finally comes to a halt.

The other car stops, too, and two men step out. At about the same time, you notice Atsushi’s car race by. At least he’s staying true to the plan. What’s important is getting Takemichi to Mikey.

When you’re brought back to reality you hear the sounds of guns aiming for the front of the car- the engine.

“Out! Everybody out! Get as far away as you can!” Mitsuya shouts as he grabs onto you and yanks you out of the car. You end up cutting yourself on the door as he pulls you out, but that’s the least of your worries as you scramble to get away from the car.

You’re not sure when it happened, but Mitsuya had let go of you at some point. You end up running into a building, out the back, and down a side street with Peke J following closely behind. But just as you think you’re in the clear, you bump into someone. Immediately, you pick up your gun and aim it straight ahead, but your whole body relaxes when you see it’s just Naoto.

“Woah, woah, it’s just me. Calm down. Are you okay?” he asks.

“No,” you scoff as you bend your knees and take a moment to catch your breath. “We’re fucked, Naoto.”

“Akkun’s still here,” he then tells you. “I saw him pick up Chifuyu and Mitsuya.”

“What?! They were supposed to keep going!” you gasp.

“I know,” he nods. “They’re going to drop Takemichi off now and then come back for us so we need to hold out until then.”

“Where? Where are they going to pick us up?” you ask him.

“Outside the subway station,” he nods. “Think you can keep going?”

“Beats sittin’ around here,” you nod. “Let’s go.”

You then start to run, heading where Naoto told you Akkun would pick you up. However, when you arrive at the station and stop running, Naoto isn’t behind you. Yet as you look down, Chifuyu’s cat is still with you.

A moment later, you see two figures walking straight toward you down the street- two men you don’t recognize with machine guns in their hands.

“Shit,” you gasp as you look at your surroundings. The closest place to go is into the subway, so that’s where you run. Picking up Peke J, you bolt down the stairs as quickly as you can.

In the station, much to your luck, there is a broken-down train with one of the doors still open. You quickly squeeze through and enter one of the cars.

In the corner of the car is an old homeless man who looks at you with bright white eyes that scares the shit out of you. And suddenly, the doors close. The train starts to move and Peke J falls out of your hands.

The old man stands up with the help of the seating nearby. He almost looks like he’s never walked before. Like that scene in Bambi when he stands up for the first time.

The old man wobbles his way toward you, getting too close for comfort. And all you can do is stare back at him, stunned by his glowing white eyes.

However, just as he’s about to reach out to you, Peke J bites him hard in the leg. The train then stops short and you fall and hit your head.

When you come back to consciousness, two men- two similar-looking men- are hovering over you. You must’ve hallucinated the whole thing. Hit your head, got a concussion, and now you’re laying on the ground with your shotgun nowhere in sight. Just Peke J who sits on your stomach and hisses at the two men.

Hi, I just wanted to come on here and share some of my favorite fics, these fics aren’t dedicated to one fandom in particular it’s just fics in general so yeah.

This is a wolfstar/Jegulus fic basically, it takes place after Sirius gets sent to grimmauld place and he finds a loop whole in Order to leave. So Sirius,Remus and Harry got to Harry’s dad parents place and Harry finds an old muggle video camera that contains old videos of regulus and James.

Ok this is another Jegulus fic, And basically Sirius finds Regulus’s old diary from when he was in Hogwarts this is a trans regulus fic and it’s really good(also this took me over an hour to find so you welcome) 

Ok this is a MikeyTake fic and it’s like an alternate universe, where there are still gangs and they are in high school but Mikey is running(it was either kanto or bonten I can’t remember lol) instead of Toman. And basically to sum it up Hinata left Takemichi for kisaki(🤢) because takemichi didn’t want to have sex with her, and takemichi wants her back, and he ends up befriending Mikey, and Mikey has the idea that they should fake date(and obviously they fall in love duh🙄 lmao also Mikey is dark impulse but it’s more manila Mikey then then Kanto Mikey/Bonten Mikey. He’s only evil when he’s with the gang)

I personally haven’t finished this fic(thought it is a finished fic I just haven’t gotten around to it yet lol) and this fic is not for the faint of heart ok so be prepared. In this fic there are no gangs. Rindou and Ran grew up in a really rich family and they are taking over part of the family business. Sanzu is this rich psycho yandere douche wad, who has an arranged marriage set for him and Rindou and he like abuses him and stuff and he’s really crazy but it like gets better and then worse and I haven’t finished it but I’m pretty sure it will end on a good note hopefully fingers crossed 🤞

Ok this is a Drarry fic and it’s and 8th year au, basically Draco went to Azkaban for 3 months after the war and then him an a few of the past 7th years attended Hogwarts again for 8th year to continue there education, but since there was so little students and significantly less administration the eight years were given in the staff dormitory and your own common room as a way to promote house unity and Draco and Harry are assigned roommates it’s pretty good I read it recently.

It’s all coming together

So, it seems almost confirmed Shin time leaped only once. He got his future where Mikey was alive.

But this confirms that OG!timeline Shin, this one we’re following in the story, doesn’t know Izana, Inupi nor Draken. Now Draken probably admired Shin “by proxy” thanks to Mikey, but it’s sad that the Shin that cared and helped Izana and Inupi just disappeared, the one that arrived didn’t even know them and then died like 2 weeks later...

This confirms that when Mikey, under the influence of dark impulses, scarred Haru, he still didn’t have the 2 sets of memories. 

This poor kid not only remembers the past, when he was in juvie, Shin was there to welcoming him back and in general, he seems to be present and a good influence inn Haru’s life, only to see him die, suicide, in front of him and also this time line, where Shin will die anyway. Poor kid

Does it mean that when Mikey ordered him to laugh he just did it because he was that traumatized?? Yeah, it’s possible. This anyway reinforce my idea that, from the beginning, before Shin’s death, Haru knew Mikey was fated to die and since he avoided that fate, a price equally high had to be payed. Probably it was first Shin’s life and later dark impulses getting. stronger. Probably he just accepted his friend was like that and if this was the price to pay, so that it would be

I’d still like to know why Haru was not one of the founders and seems detached from Mikey in some moments of Mikey’s life. Idk if Wakui will explain it, I hope it does because, I mean, I know the story is not over yet and we will probably know more, but still... in the next chapters maybe we will see when Shin died and maybe we will finally learn why Baji seemed to not know that was Shin’s shop because, to this day, this is still the biggest plot hole of the story. But anyway, we will see

The popular theories that wanted Shin and Takemichi to be connected somehow were right!

It’s still weird that Shin decided to give the power to a child, and a complete stranger! I get that in his mind Shin was trying to “bless” Takemichi with that power, in the end he managed to save his little brother and have his dream job, so he thought, why not? Maybe this kid one day will need this power that saved my family as well? I’ll give it to him so he doesn’t have to kill tho?

Like “I should have just asked” YES??? MAYBE??? SO YOU WOULDN’T HAVE TO KILL A STRANGER?? Shin, you’ll always be famous

Ngl, this was a great image, we are back to the start, with Takemichi, Hinata, Kisaki (best antagonist of the story, hands down) and now we know they were all connected to Shin

It seems both Hina and Kisaki heard Shin talking to Takemichi about some “power” to use

It is so weird that Takemichi doesn’t remember anything about that day, he didn’t remember it when Hina in ch.89 told him she knew Kisaki, nor now. In Hina’s flash back, Shin doesn’t appear, so I guess she just doesn’t conside him important but I mean... I understant she probably was more impressed by a kid her age facing multiple bullies then an adult telling them to leave, but still...

Quite convenient, what can I say lol? I’m not even mad, the story is entertaining me a lot and it makes sense Takemichi got his powers like that, just, idk the flashbacks don’t really mach this chapter either.

Maybe Takemichi not remembering is a side effect of receiving the time leaping “gift” without knowing?

Idk, but it seems things are moving fast and I’m really interested even if I haave to admit sometimes the writing is not the most logical, but the story is still in progress, so I will waait

also, i expected some big emotional conversation between Shin and Waka but lol, apparently I won’t get it. So I guess I’ll wait

OK, well, little rant because the behavior of certain people is starting to really piss me off.

I guess like most of you have seen the leak of Tokyo Revengers chapter 277, and the reactions, not going to lie, excessive?

When Mikey was at the end of his life, we were all there to beg the author to change that.

When finally everyone is saved, some people keep insulting the author, I mean, OK it's a rushed ending but you really think the author had a choice with the few chapters he had left ?

Honestly, just be happy with this happy ending, instead of crying for a yes or a no, the ending remains the author's, and you didn't have to threaten the author to change the ending.

Also, I love this ending, everyone was expecting Mikey becoming a time traveler (after learning that it was possible to give his power away.)

When Takemichi died, there were only two solutions, either Mikey committed suicide or he became a time traveler.

Mikey to travel far enough in time to help Takemichi save everyone.

Here's the most important thing now, Takemichi never went back to the future again (in my opinion), with Mikey's help he saved everyone, but the most intriguing thing about it is that Mikey and Takemichi are the only ones who know it, all the people who died, the time traveler principle, "Karma", even in the future (2017) no one knows that Takemichi was a time traveler.

However in my opinion, there will be a bad end too.

Firstly, Takemichi's group, Akkun etc have never seen him.

He and the others (Toman etc) never had such a good relationship (Much admired Takemichi) Chifuyu and he wouldn't have the same relationship for example.

And Hinata don't like Takemichi, Hinata fell in love with Takemichi when they were 12-13 years old (in chapter 277 they are 9-10 years old), you know the reason.

If Takemichi never returned to the future, Hinata never fell in love with him.

What I'm trying to say is that the happy ending is everyone's life saved.

The bad ending, is everything Takemichi has endured, will give up everyone's survival.

Or maybe I'm wrong. but hey what I'm trying to say is not to spit on this manga and on the author, I manga stays good, and the author gave the ending he wanted (even if I think that he was influenced )

Or else the author is an asshole, is in the last chapter which will be released next week, will learn that it is a dream of Mikey 😭

I'm not saying you can't think what you want of the work, just don't do it like SNK's commu (I'm not generalizing about this commu, I'm specifying)

My Review of Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown

First season review here.

Okay, it only took less than two years to get a continuation. Not bad! Let’s see how this season fairs out.

HISTORY: Takemichi Hanagaki lives his life of being yelled at by people and just taking shit every day. His neighbors bitch at him, his boss berates him, little punk-ass kids frame him. His life is shit. The only time he felt on top of the world was when Takemichi was in middle school. He was in a gang, he had respect, and he had a girlfriend. But once he finished middle school, he left that life behind and went down a boring, mediocre life. While watching the news one day, he noticed a familiar name mentioned in a grizzly murder. It was his one-time girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana. Takemichi reflects about losing his ex-girlfriend from middle school just as he’s pushed off a train platform. Before Takemichi ends up as another fatality to a moving train, he ends up in a different year. The shittiest year on record, 2005!

Yes, I will still go on record to say that 2005 was the worst fucking year, don’t at me!

As it turns out, Takemichi was thrown back to that time where he thought he was on top of the world. As it turns out, this was when everything in his life started going to shit. While in the past, Takemichi meets Hinata’s little brother, Naoto and gives him the stark warning to protect his sister because she will die in April 2017. That amazingly stayed with Naoto because Takemichi changed the future somewhat. He wasn’t able to save Hinata, but he was able to help Naoto a bit. That’s why her brother wants Takemichi to save his sister. The key to traveling to and from the past is a handshake with Naoto. And the main objective of these time travels is to prevent the heads of the Tokyo Manji gang to fall in disrepair.

SECOND SEASON: Yes, Kisaki is behind everything.

Okay, that’s too broad. Let’s see what I can decipher from the first episode since once again a lot went down. In the first season finale, Takemichi returned to 2017 to find that he could be living his best life as he’s now high up in the Tokyo Manji gang even now with old comrades and new alliances like this Black Dragon gang. The only thing is that Draken is on Death Row and Mikey is missing. But things fall apart when Kisaki drugs Takemichi and Chifuyu is shot in the head by Kisaki.

Before Kisaki could shoot Takemichi, Kazutora saved his bacon…beat the shit out of him and then helped him out. Kazutora is out of prison and tells Takemichi what really happened. Kazutora doesn’t like the route that Tokyo Manji was going down as it took on some very bad habits like drugs and women-beating. Mikey wants to end it so he’s going to kill everyone from the inside, old and new. Except Chifuyu, he’s been on this resistance of Kisaki and this change. And as for Hinata, the one Takemichi keeps returning to the past to help save dies the same death despite everything Takemichi has done to prevent it. Akkun slams the car killing her and him. Except in this timeline, Takemichi is somewhat responsible for Hina’s death.

Takemichi finally meets up with Naoto again, but things are more dire as the police are about to take Takemichi to prison for all the crimes of the Tokyo Manji. Naoto is still the key for time-jumping and is happy he finally got to him despite things still at a stalemate. Okay Takemichi, go back to 2005 and figure this mystery out.

In this season, Tokyo Manji goes up against the gang Black Dragon. This gang was never a threat, but now that they have a leader that’s really fucking frightening and is related to one of Tokyo Manji’s men, things do get rather ugly.

LICENSING: Last season, Tokyo Revengers was all over Crunchyroll. The whole series and several dubs. So, you would think that it would be given the same treatment for season two, right? Oh, so wrong! Prior to airing, Disney+ (yes, you heard right) reserved the rights to exclusively stream the second season of Tokyo Revengers. That just means in America, it’s just going to be on Hulu. I do find it a bit insulting that Hulu is calling Tokyo Revengers a “Hulu Original”. I would prefer it say, “Greedy-fucks” at the bottom. What’s even stupider is that Hulu only has this season and not season one (which is still only on Crunchyroll). The one good thing is that there weren’t any changes to the English dub with this platform change. I actually like the dub to this.

A LITTLE CHANGE WE ALL KNEW WAS COMING: In my first season review, I brought up the talks of a casting change. You all knew this was going to happen. This cast change involves legendary voice actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki (the voice of Draken) due to his temporary hiatus. No need to talk about what happened here. I think he’s sort of back voice acting after the unpleasant moments in this drama. Some of his roles have been recast including here. For how long, I do not know. Not sure about season three. Here’s who voices Draken now.

NEW CHARACTERS AND IMPORTANT CHARACTERS: This season, we are introduced to the gang Black Dragon. There was kind of an introduction at the end of season one with Hakkai being shown in 2017. Now, we’re going to deal with some Hakkai family drama as there’s a big connection between him, Tokyo Manji, and some of its members.

First, I’m going to bring up Chifuyu. You might recall that he was Baji’s right-hand man last season and the one to get betrayed by Kisaki in the season finale. In the second season, Takemichi confided in Chifuyu about his deep secret about being from the future. Chifuyu now knows about the supernatural crap Takemichi is going through.

Hakkai is a vice captain in one of Tokyo Manji’s divisions. In the future, Hakkai does end up killing off the leader of the Black Dragons. Unfortunately, that means committing fratricide as he does off his brother. In 2005, he’s a lot meeker and has a purpose of protecting ones he cares about. While the reason he gives is a lie and drags his comrades into a daunting fight, he does want to do what’s right.

Yuzuha is the younger sister of Hakkai. You might be wondering why the anime gave her top-billing in the ending theme (this song is totally lit BTW). She’s who Hakkai swears to protect and a driving factor in the brewing war about to go down between Tokyo Manji and the Black Dragons. Now, I watched this entire season subbed. But the second I read that Sarah “Ash-fucking-Ketchum” Natochenny, my birthday-twin voice actor was voicing her…oh, this I gotta hear!

Taiju is the leader of the Black Dragons and elder brother to Hakkai and Yuzuha. Before Taiju took over the Black Dragons, the group suffered a big defeat by Tokyo Manji. But Taiju took over and steered it in a different and stronger direction. Taiju is an unforgiving beast who takes glee in beating the shit out of anyone, including his younger siblings. Also, it only took me three seconds to recognize Tomokazu Sugita’s voice here.

SHIPPING PART II: After watching the first season, it was clear that Takemichi loved Hina and vice-versa. It’s just that something happened to cause Takemichi to dump Hina and Hina was never able to let it go. We get the details in the fifth episode about how they met, how they first became boyfriend/girlfriend, and the break-up. Hina fell in love with Takemichi when he saved her from some bullies. She revealed her feelings to Takemichi in their second year of middle school. What the hell could have happened between the two?

Hina and Naoto’s father was never really there for his kids and would mostly work. When he met with Takemichi, he told him that their mother spoke highly of Takemichi and that Naoto’s determination of becoming a cop has him happy. But then dropped the bomb and told Takemichi he should break up with Hina for the fact that he’s in a gang and doesn’t want her to get caught up or get hurt. I kinda figured that Takemichi broke up with Hina to protect her from harm. I just didn’t add her father talking to Takemichi to this equation. I do not see many adults in Takemichi’s time of 2005 so I figured the father was non-existent. With that said, Takemichi broke up with Hina on Christmas Eve, coming up with a bullshit lie, and getting the shit knocked out of him by Hina.

Love hurts.

Spoiler alert: They do get back together despite what the papa says.

ENDING: The massacre on Christmas ended a lot sooner than I thought. Then again, how long could a massacre on Christmas night be in terms of episodes? Then again, the August slaughter-fest was several episodes long. Who am I to judge? Taiju was never going to go down. Mitsuya, Chifuyu, and Hakkai are no match. Yuzuha tried stabbing him and he’s still at it only angrier. And as for Takemichi, don’t hold your breath. But he does take a punch like Homer did in The Simpson’s episode “The Homer They Fall”. So, who can defeat the human equivalent of Cocaine Bear? Mikey enters and ends everything with one kick to the head. And as for the army of men Taiju has from Black Dragon, all taken out by Draken.

Okay, either that’s fucking lame or Takemichi and the boys are some weak-o’s.

Taiju got knocked the fuck out. It happened so fast that you needed some instant replay to see it.

So, we get some satisfying conclusion. Taiju left home so Hakkai and Yuzuha won’t have to endure their older brother’s wrath. Takemichi and Hina get back together despite what her father says. At the Tokyo Manji meeting, Mikey and Draken make some big changes. Taiju’s right-hand men for Black Dragon have decided to join and it was decided by Mikey and Draken that they will be under Takemichi along with any other Black Dragon member. Hakkai is forgiven by his brothers without a second thought. And finally, Kisaki is kicked out of Tokyo Manji. Kisaki did not take this news sitting down and tried to bear fangs at Mikey. Mikey was not amused by Kisaki’s method of adding more members to Tokyo Manji and cut him loose.

We should probably worry about some kind of revenge plot considering Kisaki is the same guy that ruins every timeline we’ve seen up to this point. But Takemichi ends up getting rewarded by Mikey with a motorcycle of his very own. Kinda touching how Mikey is reminded of his older brother when he sees Takemichi. What’s even better is that the crew celebrated the new year and it is officially 2006. We could just end this season here with a happy note. But this is Tokyo Revengers. It’s time to see if the future changed for the better. Takemichi goes back to his time in the year of 2018. What’s going on in 2018?

I hate remembering that this was a thing.

Takemichi ends up in a timeline where he’s not incarcerated. However, he winds up at a funeral. Turns out, it was his comrade during the Christmas massacre and Hakkai’s mentor, Mitsuya. Apparently, this is the worst timeline yet. Everyone seems to be dead. Hina still dies the same way she has been since the series began. All of the captains to Tokyo Manji are dead and died pretty gruesome ways at that. Naoto came to the conclusion that Mikey is the culprit behind all the murders. And what do you know? Takemichi gets a letter from Mikey asking for him to come all the way to the Philippines to meet up.

You might be wondering, why the hell all the way out there? Well, that pile of junk we kept seeing at the end of the ending theme (great song BTW) was a special place for Mikey. This is the place where Mikey’s older brother came across the parts that would one day become Takemichi’s motorcycle. Once there, Takemichi finally meets with Mikey in the future. This is big for him because in every later timeline, Takemichi never sees Mikey. And what do you know? Mikey totally murdered his former bros. He killed Mitsuya, shot Chifuyu, set Hakkai on fire, and he even killed his second in command Draken. Something must have happened between 2006 and 2018 to cause Takemichi to leave Tokyo Manji. All we know is that Mikey was never the same after Takemichi left. And now, Mikey asks Takemichi to shoot him or he’ll shoot Takemichi. Takemichi goes crybaby and doesn’t pull the trigger. That however doesn’t stop Naoto from pulling his trigger (who was also with Takemichi). Too bad he realizes moments later that Mikey had the safety on his gun and had no intention of killing Takemichi, it was just a threat. But he truly wanted to die.

Takemichi ends up going back to 2006 and swears he isn’t going back to his present time until he settles things so no one has to die in the future. Trouble arises again as a gang ambushes Takemichi’s friends. This gang has over 300 members and they are on the move. They totally crushed Akkun and the rest. Chifuyu is in danger as well. They are the Tejiku gang, headed up by a guy named Izana Kurokawa. And worst of all, Kisaki is their newest member and is ready to kick some crybaby ass.

Before I go onto my thoughts on this season, can I just say this? Takemichi, just kill Kisaki and Akkun. It’s obvious those two are the reason for many stupid things happening in the future. And I highly recommend the latter. In literally every timeline, Akkun kills Hina. Just end him. I know he’s your bro and everything but…dude, just off him.

Okay…so I kinda had a back and forth with this season of either loving the hell out of it and thinking it was just okay and that it could be better. I think the reason behind that sentiment is that I think I was expecting more when it came to Tokyo Manji versus Black Dragon. I think I was set up for high anticipation with Tokyo Manji in a Christmas showdown. For corn’s sake, it’s the name of the stinkin’ season! In the end it was just some big fucker beating the second-tier gang members until Mikey and Draken came in. But this is a beef I have with the story itself and not the anime. The anime did well with the source and you know what, I’m kinda glad this didn’t end up becoming a movie with the retelling.

This next installation that’s coming, the show started hyping us for what’s to come even before the end credits hit on episode 13. A new gang just kicked prime members of Tokyo Manji’s ass. They outnumber them. Kisaki’s there! This new gang’s leader seems to have a fascination with Mikey and Takemichi. And we will see this season in��October. Hmm…nope, I’m not waiting to post this. I’ve been doing that a lot lately and then it just stays on my computer forever.

I know this anime gets some weird hate sometimes. I don’t know. I thought this was a fine anime. Then again, I’m always giving glowing recommendations to a lot of animes that many people don’t like. What the hell do I know? If you’re into gangs and time-travel, this is totally up your alley as it has both. I’m sorry that the two seasons Tokyo Revengers are split between two streaming services. That’s bullshit and no one likes it. Season one is still on Crunchyroll. Season two is on Hulu/Disney+. Let’s just hope for the best when it comes to season thr…It’s going to be on Hulu again.

Final note: This season’s ED theme is a banger. I know this is like the third time in this review I said something about the song. I like it!

tokyo revengers really should've been split into two parts: part one abt saving hinata, and wakui ending it with takemichi finally marrying her. then a second part, dedicated to saving mikey and getting more in-depth with the truth behind the time leaping ability, more major characters' past, etc.

it would make it feel less rushed as well as given him a different perspective on developing bonten & kanto. also not having the final arc be kinda shitty to most 💀.

i just wish he went about it differently because there is no logical way i can see a series like this, ending satisfyingly in only a couple of more chapters (with said chapters being barely twenty pages long).

Mikey needs help (and therapy but like who doesn’t) pt.1

I said in my review of Tokyo Manji Revengers I would talk about why the new arc was inevitable.

WARNING!!! SUPER SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Right, so first of all Mikey (real name: Sano Manjirou) is one of my favourite characters. Don’t ask me why, I don’t pick who I fall for. Anyway I found a lot of people were pissed and upset at the new arc, which arrives right after we think the madness has ended: everyone is healthy and happy, Hinata and Takemichi are about to get married, and Toman has been disbanded. Naoto and Takemichi can’t do the handshake time leap thing anymore either.

And then boom, we find out Mikey is decidedly not happy and healthy, and actually part of a different sus gang since Toman no longer exists. Our boy Takemichi tries to ignore it (”this is the path Mikey chose”), remembers how he promised to act in place of Mikey’s deceased older brother and knock some sense into him when he goes astray. 

So naturally our “I want to save everyone including Mikey even if I hafta ditch my wedding” protagonist goes after Mikey, gets shot like three times by Mikey, and just barely prevents Mikey’s suicide attempt. He announces he will do whatever it takes to help Mikey so he gets his happy ending with the rest of them, and then we get this heartwarming scene:

And this scene shows just how much Takemichi cares, compared even to us, the readers, but let me build up to that.

Let’s start from the beginning. Mikey is the leader of the Tokyo Manji Group (Toman), as well as one of the founding members. We learn about him pretty early on, when Naoto informs Takemichi that he must “prevent Sano Manjirou and Kisaki Tetta from meeting at all costs”. Initially you assume because these two are the ones who formed the gang, but that isn’t true as shortly into the manga we learn Toman already exists as quite a righteous group... at least as righteous as a gang run by middle and high school delinquents can be.  

Of course we piece together the actual underlying story to all of this drama right beside (or sometimes way before) Takemichi, one of the main factors being how Kisaki is responsible for turning Toman corrupt, into a gang that dabbles in underworld stuff like drugs, human trafficking, and all around terrorizing. We follow Takemichi as he thwarts all of Kisaki’s plans while on his ‘missions’ into the past. But what is often implied in everyone of his missions: a lot of the time, the future of Toman is based around Mikey.

I mean, duh, Mikey is the leader of Toman. But Mikey has always been an rather signifcant character from the very beginning of the manga, and not just becaue he’s the first one to notice and recruit Takemichi into the gang. See, from the very first ‘mission’, it’s always been about Mikey: save Draken because when he dies, Mikey turns dark. Mikey turns dark, Kisaki takes advantage (?), Toman turns corrupt, Hinata dies to Truck-kun.

All the missions are in some way all centered around how they affect Mikey, what happens to Mikey, how does this change Mikey, and thus how does this affect Toman, and then subsequently the future lives of everyone Takemichi cares about, which extends beyond just Hinata and Naoto as the story progresses. However we, and Takemichi too, assume the bad future is fixed after Kisaki’s turn with Truck-kun ensures he is no longer a threat and scheming to turn Mikey dark so he can be his ‘shadow leader’ or whatever the heck he thought would make him bae material for Hinata (idk Kisaki has been and will always be strange to me for some reason, but ig that’s why I found him a villain I was actually wary of).

Anyway we all assume everything is done and done because with Kisaki gone, there’s no one to turn Mikey dark, and since Mikey disbands Toman, there’s no gang to turn corrupt, right? Well let’s go back to what gave us the ‘bad ends’ in the first place.

Mikey has dark impulses. It’s stated explicitly. But we can see this in the way he gets violent, his completely dead and dark eyes, and the way it always feels like eggshells around him, his past, the people around him (Draken, Baji, Kazutora, Ema, Shinichiro, Takemichi). Most notably, the way that once he turns dark, he turns dark, going on killing sprees. Frequently he becomes a murderer in various bad futures, becoming someone who has fallen to those dark impulses. One memorable ‘bad end’ had Mikey murdering everyone from Toman in various an painful ways, nearly about to off Takemichi too. 

The most important thing to note is that in this future, Kisaki was already dead. So even without Kisaki, Mikey’s dark side can and will run wild. Thus, from the very beginning, Mikey was always a character prone to becoming dark. Thus, it should come as no surprise that even without Toman and without Kisaki, he still managed to go dark in the final ‘good future’.

Part 2 will go over why a ‘Save Mikey’ arc is in-line with the story, even after literally everyone else was happy in a good future.
