Prompt: someone finally celebrates Bonnie's bday and that someone is Kai Parker

So this is a little dumb and very short but it is over 100 words. I really loved this prompt, Bonnie deserves someone who actually wants to celebrate her.

“What’s going on?” Bonnie asked, walking into her kitchen to see Kai standing in the middle of a disaster.

“No!” Kai shouted, pouting, “I wanted to bring you breakfast in bed.” 

Bleary eyes focused more until Bonnie saw the disaster for what it was: breakfast, flowers, a card. “You don’t need to make a big deal about my birthday, you know.”

Kai nodded, winding up to a very simple counterpoint, “When was the last time you or any of your so-called friends celebrated your birthday? When you were there, I mean.” He had a point and he knew it. “Exactly, now march your butt back to bed so I can do this right.”

“You’d better not have anything else planned,” Bonnie called back as she humored his instructions.

“Aww,” Kai shouted after her, “It’s cute when you say things you know are wrong.” Bonnie was going to be pampered on her birthday and he was not accepting any arguments on the subject.

"I feel like italian," Bonnie said to her roommate walking out her of her apartment.

She scoured the many food trucks outside, she lived in the perfect part of town if you liked food, not so great if you're on a diet, and found the one she was looking for. When she got up to order she was shocked at who was behind the window.

"What happened to the taco truck?"

"Nothing, that's just for Tuesday's."

"And the burger joint?"

"Friday and Saturday's."

"How many food trucks do you own?" she asked incredulously.

"Enough to cater to your every craving."

This response tho! The most level-headed one yet.

I love Kai, obviously - I'm a bonkai blog. And yes, Kai was victimized, isolated, and stigmatized over something he had no control over and created an inward narrative of "if they think I'm bad anyway, I might as well be" - which, as sympathetic as it is, was still a conscious choice Kai made.

Kai *chose* to kill his siblings. Being sociopathic (or manic-depressive, even if that's literally just Julie Plec retconning and presents totally differently from anti-social personality disorders, but whatever), does not negate that he was perfectly capable of knowing right from wrong and chose to do the wrong thing. And honestly, clustering different mental disorders and pushing a narrative that being mentally disordered is an excuse for being a murderer is harmful towards people who are neuro-atypical. Many, many neuro-atypical or mentally disordered people know how to act right. I've never had a manic episode and thought harming another person was justifiable.

22 is an adult. I'm 25. My friends range in ages from 20 to 30. 22 year-olds are adults, capable of making adult decisions and Kai did the angry white man thing and mass murdered people because he didn't get what he wanted. That was his choice. It's perfectly fine to like him as a character and guess what? You don't have to *justify* why you like him. Just like him.

Kai Parker suffered. He had a rough life, and recognizing and sympathizing with that is great. But don't use it as some excuse to baby him.

"Forgive me father for I have sinned, forgive me father for I have sinned, forgive me father for I have sinned," she mutter repeatedly while she sobbed. It wasn't supposed to happen, it was an accident. Not that many people died on the compound, but enough to call for her head.

She pleaded for her mom to help but what the Supreme Joshua said was sacred and meant to be followed at all costs, even her. She was thrown in the cellar with his son Malachai. No one knew why he was down there just that he was an abomination and apparently now so was she.

"You know that's not going to help, right?"

"You don't know that!"

"Yeah, because in the seven years I've been down here I never thought of that."

"Seven years?"

"Yeah."

"That means I have time! I can make it right. I can-"

"Stop! I can't with this desperate follower thing. You think you're the only one who's been down here? You'll be dead with in a week and I'll be left here alone, again."

"Why don't you help them?"

"If I had the ability to do that I wouldn't be down here."

If he could sleep all day he would. It was the only piece of happiness he got because the moment he closed his eyes she was there wearing a forest green lingerie set waiting for him to come to bed.

"How was your day, baby?"

"Oh you know same old, same old. Sun comes up eclipse, sun goes down, lather, rinse, repeat. You don't want to hear about it." He shed himself of his shirt and was working on the pants but fumbling.

"Let me help you, baby."

"No! I can take off my own clothes, thank you very much."

"But I can do it so much better."

"I bet you could, but I don't want it to end just yet." He crawled toward. "Can I touch you a little before it's over?"

"You know it doesn't work like that."

"Come on. Let me be useful before you kill me. It'll be well worth your while."

"It already is." She moved quickly. She pinned him down between her thighs squeezing with a force greater than her tiny 5'2" body suggested.

This is it, he thought, I get to die a happy man.

“I don’t understand,” Alaric said. He stared at the couple standing in the doorway, their positions aligned, complementing each other. If they had been strangers, if he hadn’t known Bonnie Bennett for most of her life, and known Kai Parker better than he’d like — he’d have known that they were married, just by watching them watching each other.  

So maybe he didn’t know them as well as he thought after all.  

“When did Kai … how did Kai… “ He stumbled over the words, his thoughts unable to settle on any one question. 

Bonnie’s face was impassive, if slightly impatient, and Kai’s smirk widened. 

Anger took precedence over confusion.“You little sh-” Alaric snapped, taking a step towards —

— a solid wall of invisibility, that smacked him so hard in the face that he was sure his nose was broken.  

“What the f-!”

“We just want to be left in peace,” Bonnie said, her voice regretful but firm.  

“Left in … Bonnie, he murdered his coven! My wife!”

“Um… technically, the ceremony wasn’t quite complete-”

“Kai,” Bonnie snapped.

“Sorry,” Kai said quickly, chagrined and the whole exchange was so domestic that Alaric felt nauseated.

“What did he do to you?” he whispered. Because that was the only explanation. There was absolutely no way that the girl he knew could have gone behind his back, freed his worst enemy and… married him.

Bonnie and Kai exchanged knowing glances but Alaric didn’t notice.  

Kai must have done some kind of spell on Bonnie… got ahold of her somehow… and all Alaric had to do was figure out how. He’d come back with help. Caroline. Dorian. His older students. He’d even recruit Damon and Elena, they had to know that the maniac was out. They’d come back in force, stage an intervention for Bonnie, and then kill Kai for real. No Prison World this time. No loopholes, just a quick, clean, stake to-

He blinked slowly, the light burning through his lids and hurting his head. Dorian’s face formed in his view. The look of concern on it was rapidly morphing to rage.

“What…?”

“Next time you want to go on a bender, can you at least have the decency to leave a forwarding address?”

Alaric raised his head and tried to turn his neck. It was hard because everything was slow, clumsy and his head! And what was that smell? He sniffed his shirt and realized it was him.

“Where am I?” he muttered, even as he recognized the signs of the bar around him. What the hell?

“Why did you do this Alaric?” Caroline would ask later, her eyes full of disappointment and disgust.

He shook his head. He didn’t know. He barely remembered getting to the bar. All he remembered was waking up on his wedding anniversary and being torn between going on a bender, or tracking Bonnie down to get the Ascendant and pay his brother-in-law a visit. A visit with a vervain gun and some stakes.  

Apparently, he had gone for Option A.

“If Bonnie hadn’t recognized you and called Dorian, you’d probably be sleeping off in a cell. Maybe we should have let you,” Caroline snapped. Apparently, she’d been talking for some time. “The girls have been asking what’s wrong. You’re not the only one who’s lost someone, you know? Put your shit together, Ric.”

She flounced out.  

Alaric blinked a little. Bonnie…? Something about her niggled in his subconscious. Then flckered away. With a sigh, he got up to have a shower and coffee.

“Maybe we should have dumped him in a cell,” Kai murmured after Bonnie got off the phone from Caroline. “Made it more convincing.”

Bonnie side-eyed him and he raised his hands up apologetically. “Insensitive, I know! I should feel for the guy some more.” It was not that he didn’t feel guilty about Jo. He would carry that for the rest of his life. But he couldn’t bring himself to give a damn about her baby-daddy.

He glanced over at Bonnie as she flitted around the house, gathering her things for her class later that morning, and his heart tightened. He didn’t need his sister to sympathize with Alaric. If anything ever happened to her… So many things had happened to her.  

“Stop it,” she said without looking up from packing her bag.

“Stop what?” He asked, guiltily.

“Stop worrying about me,” she said. “I can feel your concern boring holes through my back.”

“Oh that’s not what I want to bore through you,” he drawled.

She rolled her eyes. “Be serious. I know you, remember? I’m your wife.”

He felt his heart tighten to burst at the reminder and before he knew it, he was by her side, holding her close.

She wrapped her small hands around his back, and he knew he could feel how hard his heart was pounding. Not for the first time, he wondered how this was real. How this was his life. How he got to be free, and human, and Bonnie Bennett’s fricking husband. He knew damn well that he didn’t deserve this happy ending.

“No one deserves a happy ending Kai,” she murmured. “But those of us that get lucky have to remember to be grateful.”

His throat was too tight to speak, so he just tipped her chin up and kissed his wife on the mouth.

Kai won't be Kai unless Bonnie comes with him and given Kat's stance on coming back that ain't gonna happen, so Plec, stay away from Kai Parker we don't want the "redeemed by a white girl" treatment that's ruined so many other characters.

A/N: Kind of a sad one. This is set in the very far future, and it’s from of an alternate timeline that splits off somewhere after 6x17. In this timeline, Kai didn’t become Heretic. Jo is alive. He returned from the 1903 prison world and got to rule the coven as best as he could, albeit with a lot of opposition/distrust. He and Bonnie saw past their differences and eventually got married. This story takes place in the “twilight” of their life together.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”  

Jo managed a strained smile, but Bonnie couldn’t bring herself to fake one. She left the door open for Jo to follow. 

“So how is…,” Jo began but Bonnie had already walked through the foyer and into the kitchen. With a sigh, Jo followed.

“Bonnie-”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“He’s my brother, too.”

“When it’s convenient for you,” Bonnie snapped. “When you need him to get between you and the Council, he is.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Life’s not fair.” There was a heavy, tense pause. Bonnie turned to the pot she was stirring. “Look, this is important. If you just came here to offer fake sympathy then you should-”

“We need to talk about the Merge.”

Bonnie dropped the spoon. She looked up, staring unseeingly through the window. “Of course, we do.”

“Bonnie-”

“Lizzie and Josie’s 22nd is next month.”

“You can’t be serious!” Jo shouted.  

Bonnie turned slowly, raised one eyebrow. “Can’t I?” she whispered coldly.  

“Bonnie…”

“Last I checked, every pair of twins with Parker blood were Merge candidates.”

“Not when the Praetor has his own twins that are almost of age! This shouldn’t even be up for debate.”

“Your girls are older.”

“My girls aren’t the children of the leader of the Gemini coven! It’s your children’s responsibility to-”

Bonnie barked out a laugh that cut Jo off mid-sentence. “You want to talk about Gemini responsibility? About the merge? You?”

Jo’s cheeks darkened but her eyes kept glaring. “I would have merged with Kai.”

“Twenty years after the fact, after you’d got to live your life and he rotted in a solitary confinement. What about when you were 22 and it was your duty. Were you willing to merge with Kai then?”

Jo looked away. After a while, Bonnie walked out of the kitchen. Jo had no choice but to follow.

“My twins are Parkers, but they’re also Bennetts and it protects them from your coven’s pact.” At Jo’s sharp glance, shock on her face, Bonnie smiled. “Yes. The spirits did me a solid. For once. My children aren’t going to be your ritual sacrifice to perpetuate your coven. So you and the rest of the Gemini better figure your shit out before…” Her voice trailed off, and for the first time, her pain bled through. “Before the end.”

“You’re going to let us all die?” Jo whispered.

“Let me put it this way, sister,” Bonnie snapped. “In a few weeks or a few months… if I’m really lucky in a year, I’ll be a widow.” Her voice broke off. Jo took a step towards her but Bonnie held up her hand sternly. “I’m not going to bury my husband and my child. He’s going to die knowing that his children didn’t have to kill themselves for a coven that treated him like shit despite everything he did for you.”

Tears were standing in Jo’s eyes now. Whether they were because of grief for her dying brother, guilt for her own sad role in his life, or fear for her own children, Bonnie didn’t know. Or care.

This seems to be a universal issue in this fandom, woobifying the villain, and I get it to a degree due to how the writers frame things, but people need to learn to take a look at the individual actions instead in comparison of.

Like take the age old Stefan vs Damon argument. Stefan always takes the cake as better and his stans will shout through the roof how great he is, but that's because they're looking at it through the lens of Damon being the standard, he standard for how actions should be treated in the series, and that screws with people's interpretations of characters tremendously because if you take a step back you'll realize, yes, Stefan is better than Damon, but he's not better in general.

He still contributes to the racist, misogynistic, and homophobic narrative the writers built. He's still a murderer with or without the ripper excuse, and even with it, that means fuck all, because it's mainly used to give sympathy for Stefan the murderer instead of his many many victims. He's still hurt Elena, just not worse than Damon.

And that's the issue with Kai, that the fandom over villainizes him in comparison to Damon. We in the BK community don't think he's a poor misunderstood boy that needs to be coddled we just think you should question a narrative that says he's the worse when there a main characters, heros, who have done worse.

Look at him as an individual, he did a lot of fucked up stuff that he deserved to be punished for. It's why I don't blame Bonnie for leaving him in 1903. If Kai had been in character and truly on the redemption path he should have understood too, tit for tat, but we all know how that ended. Bonnie just ends up blamed for hia misdeeds and he's once again woobifyed by the fandom.
