A Block (part 1) + intro | A Block (part 2) + faction guide | B Block (part 1) + Any Other Guys | B Block (part 2) + miscellaneous info
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 3 has landed! If you missed parts 1 and 2, check them out here and here! We're tackling the first half of B Block today, which is a real rogues' gallery.
I've also tacked on a bonus guide to some of my favourites who didn't make it into the G1 because there is no justice in this world and Gedo is a cruel monster. You might see them if you decide to watch the undercard tag matches though, so it's not entirely frivolous self-indulgence!
Come back tomorrow for the 4th and final installment, where we'll round out the field with the back half of B Block! [edit: it's out! Check it out here] And then after that it's G1 time! Only 2 more sleeps to go! (or about 4 if I count naps)

My Commentary: This A.M.V. showcases mostly Koushiro's Adoptee storyline, while also including brief scenes from 2020 eps that focused on Koushiro's inclusion or highlights. (There are a few tiny semi-spoilery segments from final battle of Digimon 2020 Episodes 66~67, but mainly show Koushiro.) There are no Tri, Kizuna, or The Beginning spoilers here. However, a finalized version may add in other moments later!

Extended Commentary: An A.M.V. I made in just under 2 hours, or, about an hour and 50 minutes total of editing, plus saving and review checks; as I aimed to finish just in time for: "Kou&Ten Day" a.k.a a "Koushiro & Tentomon Day" {Focus} (5/10, May 10) in the J.P.N fan base, the name comes from the "Kou" of Koushiro's J.P.N name, {Kou = Go = "Five" (5)} as pronounced in J.P.N + "Ten", a nickname for "Tentomon" partially given by Mrs. Izumi during "02" ("Tento-san") Koushiro fans often share Koushiro works on this day, including platonic works.
This particular work, specifically for Koushiro x Taichi, includes a Queer focus lens as the original song did. (Please be respectful if interacting on this work!)
This {s o n g} means a LOT to me on a personal level, so please, please if you can support and consider purchasing the original by A r c h u l e t a, at any official links it may be out on, including I T U N E S!
As Mother's Day 2k24 is also 5/12 this year, it's also just in time for combo Kou&Ten Day+Mother's Day!

NJPW Wrestle Grand Slam 9/5/2021
Skipping the first two matches, because I just don’t have time.
Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo (c) vs. El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship -- This was fun. The focus of Desperado and Kanemaru is Phantasmo’s leg in an attempt to take away his base for Sudden Death. This plan succeeds, as Phantasmo ultimately cannot stand to hit the kick, instead taking the boot off and attempting to hit Desperado with it. Desperado avoids and gets hold of the boot, sticking it on his hand and landing a huge knock out blow to Phantasmo, followed by Pinche Loco for the three count. New champs!!! Winners: El Desperado and Kanemaru
Desperado sells pain in his hand from using the boot for that strike to Phantasmo. Backstage, he shows his hand to the camera, and there is a significant bruise.
Dangerous Tekkers (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito and Sanada vs. Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship -- This starts off with a little bit of nonsense, but they quickly get down to business. Zack goes nuts as soon as he tags in. Uppercuts and neck cranks galore!! Zack catches Goto out of a spinning heel kick attempt into an STF! That Naito and Sanada double team offense is what I live for. Elbow to Zack in the corner by Sanada! Sanada throws Zack into an elbow from Naito! Sanada dropkicks Zack in the back! Naito catches Zack with an inverted atomic drop! Sanada with a back drop suplex! Naito with that bEaUtIfuL jacknife roll up! Taichi sneaks a tag on Sanada's foot while Sanada goes to the top rope to land a moonsault on Yoshi-Hashi!!! Back suplex/chokeslam combo on Sanada by Zack and Taichi! Goto is in the ring to try to save, but Taichi takes him out with a huge forearm!! Naito is in the ring, but Zack grabs him in a Cobra Twist, while Taichi lands a superkick followed by Black Mephisto on Yoshi-Hashi!! 1, 2, 3!!! Winners: Dangerous Tekkers
Robbie Eagles (c) vs. Hiromu Takahashi for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship -- Pumped for this!!! Overhead belly-to-belly in the corner by Hiromu. Hiromu drives Eagles into the other corner with a Death Valley Driver. Eagles ducks Hiromu's forearms. Low 619 to the leg, dropkick to the leg, then Ron Miller Special by Eagles! Hiromu hits a sunset flip powerbomb over the ropes and onto the floor!! Huge lariat and nasty reverse DDT by Hiromu!! Eagles hits a strong thrust kick and goes for the top rope, but Hiromu quickly scrambles across the canvas to grab Eagles' leg and prevent his climb. But Eagles puts him down with another thrust kick. 450 from the top to the leg by Eagles! Ron Miller Special by Eagles. Hiromu gets close to the ropes, but Eagles pulls him back into the center and locks it in even tighter. Hiromu taps! I didn't expect this, but I am not mad at it. Let Eagles have a good reign. Let Hiromu win the title back at Wrestle Kingdom or something. Winner: Robbie Eagles
After the match, Desperado challenges Eagles to a rematch for the Junior Heavyweight title, and offers Eagles and a partner of his choice a shot at the Junior Heavyweight tag titles in exchange.
Backstage, Hiromu is on the floor, devastated at his loss and saying that he sucks. Poor guy. He then repeatedly tells himself that he is awesome and that he will show everyone what junior heavyweight wrestling is all about.
Shingo Takagi (c) vs. Evil for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship -- This is everything you would expect it to be. A lot of nonsense with some good shit from Shingo mixed in. The first 15 minutes are purely Bullet Club nonsense. Evil shoves Shingo into the guard rail in front of the timekeeper's table twice, knocking the table and Abe over twice. Shingo eventually gets revenge, sitting Evil and Togo at the timekeeper's table and shoving Sho and Yujiro into the guard rail and into the table, laying all four of them out. Red Shoes eventually threatens to call for a DQ to get Bullet Club to leave ringside. After this, there is finally some wrestling. Noshigami and a huge wheelbarrow suplex from Shingo!!! Shingo counters Everything is Evil into Made in Japan and goes for the pin, but Togo returns and pulls Red Shoes out of the ring. Togo chokes Shingo with a wire. Yujiro hits his shitty DDT on Shingo. Shingo kicks out!!!! But Evil lands on Red Shoes. Togo goes back to choking Shingo with the wire. Bushi runs out for the save!! Sho lands a chair shot to Shingo's head and a Shock Arrow. Naito and Sanada come to Shingo’s aid now! Evil threatens to hit Shingo with the belt, but Shingo wrestles it away from him. Beautiful strikes and a Pumping Bomber put Evil down before Shingo hits Last of the Dragon for the win!! Nice moment with LIJ all together in the ring for Shingo’s post-match comments, one guy in each corner of the ring surrounding the champ. Good stuff. Winner: Shingo Takagi
Backstage, Shingo references Ospreay parading around the US, making claims of being the real champ. Can't wait to see Shingo kick his ass.

This was your typically fun, brisk NEW YEAR DASH!! show, that was as always was more about the angles and story progressions into the year ahead (or indeed, lack there of) as opposed to great matches or anything. Debuting in the Sumida Ward Gym, the show was a mystery card, with the matches only becoming apparent once the participants entered. Things kicked off with Tanahashi defending the World TV Title against Ryusuke Taguchi, in an inoffensive, but totally superfluous opener. It only went 5:40, and was pretty much all your typical Taguchi comedy bout, which Tana obviously won with a cradle. The post match was eventful as a video aired of none other than Matt Riddle challenging Tanahashi, so that's certainly an interesting development. Tana claimed to have no idea who Riddle was. Next up, NOAH Ace Kiyomiya and NJ Young Lion Oiwa put in a losing effort against former tag champs Bishamon. This was a nice little match which saw Goto pin Oiwa after the Shoto in 7:40.
The next outing was Young Lion's Nakashima and Leube's official last match before their excursion. They took on the new Tag Champs, ELP and Hikuleo in a standard tag match. Phantasmo pinned Yuto at the 8 minute mark with Thunder Kiss 86. After bidding the Young Lions farewell, Chase Owens attacked the champions, and announced himself and KENTA as their next challengers. Fab. It was 12 man tag action next as the entire House of Torture took on the New Japan Babyface All-Stars. This was pretty bad, and devolved into the usual HoT nonsense. Umino pinned Togo in 8 minutes after a Death Rider, then the heels beat everyone down in the post match. Narita focussed on Shota, so their feud continues, Kanemaru laid out Despy with a whiskey bottle, so there's his next Jr. Title challenger, and EVIL laid out Tama, cut his hair, and posed with the NEVER Title, which he then stole. I can't possibly pretend that any of these pairings interest me in the slightest, but if there's one positive, it's that at least EVIL isn't anywhere near the main event scene.
United Empire battled the Bullet Club War Dogs next in a 10 man. This was all excellent. The match itself only went 5:10, but it was all-action and super intense; they brawled around the building, Akira hit a balcony dive, Connors Speared and beatdown the referee, Gabe Kidd juiced a gusher after hitting the exposed buckles, the War Dogs all threw chairs and guardrails from the crowd into the ring, and the match was thrown out, ruled a No Contest. There was a crazy post-match beatdown, which included the heels trying to gouge Akira's eye out with a metal object, and he juiced too. Just when it looked like they were done, the UE fought back and cleared house, only for Gedo to blindside Ospreay with a lowblow. They were about to take him out when TJP made the save by Misting Finlay, and Ospreay hit Gedo with a running Powerbomb through an upright table in the corner. Ospreay then said his last night in New Japan is New Beginning in Osaka on February 11th, and challenged all 5 guys to 10 man war fare, and he'd let Finlay choose the stipulation. The new Global Champion chose a Cage Match, so that should be outstanding stuff. This was the highlight of the show by far.
LIJ and Just Five Guys faced off next in a total House Show affair. It wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't good, and the post match didn't fill me with much excitement. TAKA scored his first win in maybe 15 years when he pinned BUSHI with a Michinoku Driver II at 8:47. The post match saw SANADA challenge Naito to a rematch (meh). I'd much rather someone else challenge for the World Heavyweight belt at this point, maybe even Taichi, but this was the inevitable issue with putting the belt back on Naito. There just aren't many/any fresh matches for him. The 2024 KOPW Champion was decided in the next match, which was a pinfalls only 10 minute sprint. This sucked, the crowd was dead, the action uninspired and even though it only went 10 minutes, it felt 30. After O-Khan pinned everyone, Ishimori snuck in, stole a pin, then ran away to beat the clock and win the Championship. Whatever. I think this belt is way past its Use By date now.
And then it was main event time, as the Dream Team of Okada, Ishii, Mox and Danielson took on the TMDK guys. This was lots of fun, everyone looked great and all the individual stories made for a compelling watch. Ishii tore the house down every time he got in there, and Danielson and ZSJ's exchanges were the best wrestling on the show. Obviously. The finish saw Haste and Nicholls put Ishii away with the Tank Buster whilst Sabre had Danielson tied up in a Manjigatame at the 13:50 mark. The post match saw Zack challenge Danielson (now THAT'S a rematch I can get behind!), with both guys promising to tap each other out (despite all the talk of submissions, their last match ended in a pinfall), then Fujita said he, Nicholls and Haste were next for the NEVER 6 Man Titles. Okada was very annoyed at this, saying Fujita was in no way ready to face him, then they stared down Tanahashi on commentary to end and eventful show.

Power Struggle preview
Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Shingo Takagi - Sabre is defending the IWGP world heavyweight title. Shingo is the NEVER champion, but his title is not at stake. This is presumably the final world title bout of the year, so whoever leaves with the belt tonight will likely go on to defend it in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 19 on January 4.
Right after Sabre won the title on October 14, Takagi, SANADA, and Shota Umino all challenged him for the gold. Sanada got the first title shot on October 20. New Japan also booked this match and Sanada vs. Umino for this show, with the idea that we wouldn't know which would be a title bout and which would be a consolation match until after the 20th.
In singles matches, the champion is 3-2 against the challenger. Takagi's most recent win over Sabre was in their block match in this year's G1 Climax, but Zack got his win back in the block final. Shingo's argument is that we need a rubber match, and I'm not complaining. But I find it interesting that Sabre's only unavenged loss in the G1 was against Shota Umino, and they've gone out of their way to avoid running it back.
I like Shingo and I think he didn't get enough out of his world title run. But let's face it, this match is a formality. Sabre is clearly headed to the Tokyo Dome, and it's just a question of who will be waiting for him when he gets there. I'm hoping that question is answered tonight. If it's a big surprise from out of left field, that'll be super cool and fun. If Umino steps up to challenge Zack, well...uh...
David Finlay vs. Taichi - Finlay's IWGP global title is at stake.
Coming out of the G1, Finlay was challenged by YOSHI-HASHI (age 42), and I figured that was okay as a placeholder until a more substantial contender emerged. Then they immediately went to Finlay vs. Hirooki Goto (45) and made the whole story about how he's an aging never-was. As soon as the match ended I was like "okay, let's get someone under 40 out here, please." So naturally Finlay calls out Yuya Uemura (29, sidelined with a torn triceps) to troll us, and then here comes Taichi (44) to remind me that New Japan has an endless supply of middle-aged men who don't stand a chance against Finlay. I mean, who's next, Tomoaki Honma?
I don't mean to be hard on Taichi. OK, I was pretty hard on Taichi for a long time, but I warmed up to him over the past few years. In 2022 I might have said he's a step up from fighting Yoshi and Goto. In 2024, though, he's hardly been around, except to fail to qualify for the G1. He's ice cold, and the idea that he's making a big challenge to prove he can hang with the top guys would work better if they hadn't just done the exact same thing with Yoshi and Goto. That might work if he could win the title, but that's just not gonna happen. Finlay retains, and I suppose he'll pick a fight with Tiger Mask.
DOUKI vs. Master Wato - Wato returned from a knee injury on October 14 and challenged Douki for the IWGP junior heavyweight title. When Wato returned from excursion in 2020, Douki was positioned as a major rival for him, mainly because at the time Douki was a total jobber and Wato struggled to get a win over anyone else. Now Douki is on top of the division, and Wato has a 3-1 singles record over the champion.
In the US a guy returning from injury almost always wins his first big singles match, but in New Japan they often do a loss, to make ring rust feel like a serious factor. I don't expect a title change, but I'll be happy if Wato doesn't look like an undercard geek.
Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita vs. TJP & Francesco Akira - This is the final match of the Super Jr. Tag League tournament. The team that wins the tournament typically issues a challenge to the IWGP junior tag team champions for Wrestle Kingdom.
Eagles and Fujita, the Ichiban Sweet Boys, won A Block with four wins and one loss. Catch 2/2 (TJP & Akira) finished 3-3 in B Block, breaking a three-way tie for first place with wins over Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X and the junior tag champions, Kevin Knight & KUSHIDA.
I could see either team going to the Tokyo Dome, so this is tough to pick. But I guess I'll give the nod to Eagles and Fujita, since they haven't spent near as much time in the junior tag title picture, and I'd like to see a fresh team chase the gold.
Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls vs. Great-O-Khan & HENARE - Haste & Nicholls are defending the IWGP heavyweight tag team title. The STRONG tag title is not at stake, since Haste and Nicholls are defending that on November 8. Henare is coming off of losing the NEVER singles title. The big story with O-Khan is that he'll be defending the KOPW belt in an intergender match against Suzu Suzuki on November 17.
Whoever wins this match will probably hold the IWGP tag belts going into the World Tag League tournament (Nov. 19-Dec. 8), which will decide the next challengers. My preference would be for Haste and Nicholls to hold the gold all the way to January 4, at least. But Khan and Henare aren't really going anywhere as singles, so giving them a run as a strong tag team wouldn't be a bad thing. Of course, I don't expect it to happen, so I pick the champs to retain.
SANADA vs. Shota Umino - If Sanada had won the world title on October 20, this match would have been his first defense. As it is, though, it's a consolation match between the two guys on the short end of last month's four-way situation. Of those four, Umino has singles wins over both Zack Sabre and Shingo Takagi, but he's 0-2 against Sanada, so you can argue he needs this win before he can challenge the winner of tonight's main event.
The big story of this match will be Umino's relationship with the crowd. He's always been booked as a white-meat babyface, and I hadn't noticed any problems with that until 10/14, when he asked for a title shot and Ryogoku mercilessly booed him. Things weren't much better on 10/20, although beating Callum Newman in London was naturally going to draw a heel reaction. But now Shota is heading into Osaka, a notorious heel town, and there's already momentum for rejecting a big push for him. This could be a tough night for the kid.
Honestly, if the domestic audience turns on Umino, a heel turn wouldn't be the worst thing for his character development, and New Japan should probably embrace the opportunity. The problem is that New Japan likes to plan things out far in advance, so if they've committed to "Shota Umino headlines the Tokyo Dome and is the top babyface throughout 2025," then it won't be easy for the crowd to change their minds. One way or another, I expect Shota to pick up the win here, and to call out the champion at the end of the show.
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Oleg Boltin vs. EVIL & Ren Narita - Tana was originally supposed to team with El Phantasmo, but he's been pulled out due to cancer treatment. That sounds pretty scary, but ELP seems pretty upbeat about it, so I'm hoping he knows some good news that I don't. Tana vs. Evil has already been signed for January 4, so this is a preview of that. I assumed this match would also set up Phantasmo to challenge Narita for the television title, but I guess that's off the table. Maybe Boltin can get a title shot instead? Maybe someone else will? Who knows. I'm kinda thinking Evil and Narita will win to get heel heat.
Tetsuya Naito & Yota Tsuji & Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI vs. Toru Yano & Tomoaki Honma & Ryusuke Taguchi & Dragon Dia - This is just a filler match, mostly to get Naito's team on the card. Hiromu, Bushi, Taguchi, and Dia were all participants in Super Jr. Tag League. Yano and Honma are little more than enhancement talent these days. Naito was world champion up until three weeks ago, and Tsuji will probably be in that spot before too long. So this is kind of the "atom bomb vs. coughing baby" of New Japan filler tag matches. Honma will probably lose the fall.
Gabe Kidd & Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney & Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X vs. KUSHIDA & Kevin Knight & Paris de Silva & Jude London & Katsuya Murashima - More aftermath from Super Jr. Tag League, where Connors-Moloney, Ishimori-X, Kushida-Knigh, and de Silva-London saw action. The odd men out are Kidd, who is a heavyweight and the STRONG men's champion, and Mursahima, who is a Young Lion. So yeah, Murashima is definitely doing the job in this match.
YOH & Ninja Mack & The DKC vs. Tiger Mask & Capitan Suicida & Shoma Kato - This is a pre-show match and I never seem to find out of it will actually air on the live stream until it's already over. Tiger & Suicida were a team in Super Jr. Tag League, as was Mack & DKC. Yoh teamed with Rocky Romero, who I suppose is headed back to AEW. Kato is a Young Lion which means he's here to lose the match.

"My name is Izumi Koushirou and I just recently turned thirty. I'm studying science related material at Keio University, though I've technically already graduated, I am always trying to further my education and my career goal in the field of relevant scientific research fields. My family... consists of my parents. My favorite drink is ... Oolong. My favorite food ... I lately really enjoy Chinese takeout, and dishes in general, but I also enjoy Japanese home cooked dishes. Omurice is also a favorite. I like my eggs with some ponzu. The food I hate ... there are 'some' things that I mostly just try to avoid, but I do well with that. People usually listen and try to be accomodating if I make a polite request to not be served the food. If they didn't, I would have already left. Strength: I try to maintain an open mind about the world and reality around me. Weakness: I'm actually quite obstinate. My hobbies are researching things that Interest me, including by using my computer, observing nature, and visiting museums for both educational purposes and personal enjoyment. I am an Adoptee. Because I am, my family is what could be considered by society to be a 'Non-normative family'. My parents are, I know now, without a doubt, my real parents, but my late relatives are also important. I visit the cemetary to see the family grave every Ohigan I get, even if the trip from home takes hours to reach there. And... the person that I both consider a dear friend, and love, is Yagami Taichi."
Izumi Koushiro, Probably (A.U. Concept or Not)
"...Did Yamato-san say something unusual?" "Well, it's just... Yamato was wondering, 'things' like, 'how much' I 'knew' about you, if we're 'really' 'friends'--"

Syb Reviews G1 Climax 33 July 15
Hey all! We’ll see how much I keep up with this but here’s some thoughts on the matches I did watch on the first night of the G1 card! This weekend is free to watch on NJPW World so get on that especially for the matches that are must-watch :D
I’ll keep these brief and spoiler-free so that you can use them as a match guide if you’re strapped for time and want to just watch the highlights. Crossed out matches I skipped so you’ll have to decide for yourself.
*
1. Yoshi-Hashi vs. El Phantasmo
- Good!! Not a must-watch but it’s really fun to see Yoshi-Hashi’s swagger as IWGP Tag champ, and I’ll be keeping one eye on how El Phantasmo finds a new faction (or doesn’t!) this G1.
2. Chase Owens vs. Gabe Kidd
- pass. You couldn’t pay me to watch a Chase Owens match.
3. Tanga Loa vs. Kenta
- I was only so so on watching this to begin with and my friend said it was nothing special.
4. Ren Narita vs. Shota Umino
- ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH!!!! The Reiwa three muskateers were *the* thing I wanted to watch on this card and BOY did this deliver. They’re really building the chemistry of their rivalry wonderfully. I’d watch this a second time. I can’t wait for the backstage comments on this.
5. Kazuchika Okada vs. Great-O-Khan
- sorry to okada I just don’t find great-o-khan that interesting.
6. Kaito Kiyomiya vs. Yota Tsuji
- ANOTHER ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH!!! God Tsuji is so insanely talented, he has me rooting for him to win A-block. Just a star. And it’s great to see Kiyomiya up there kicking ass. I want him to get his rematch with Okada...
7. Tachi vs. Will Ospreay
- I watched this match for Taichi hometown crowd and I regretted it. It’s not very good I’m sorry to say. I have no idea if Ospreay is working hurt (very dumb) or if that spot he missed in the middle was part of a worked shoot working hurt (also very dumb) but this match dragged so much at the start that we skipped to the last 5 minutes. I do not recommend it.
8. Sanada vs. Hikuleo
- skipped. There will be other matches with Sanada that seem more interesting.
