women’s rights, stan culture, and “idolization”: what the fuck are we doing here?
tw: sexual abuse
i am absolutely dismayed to hear of the ongoing situation involving taeil, despite knowing very little about him as a person and having surface level knowledge of nct 127 as a group. i am even more dismayed at the discourse surrounding the way nctzens, especially taeil stans, have been reacting to the news since the announcement this morning.
i dont want to rant and ramble bc that helps nobody. i’ve read my fair share of thinkpieces on various platforms—some well thought out, some covering the bare minimum at best, and even more demonstrating a complete lack of understanding as to how we need to approach these subjects both as fans and as consumers. i feel as if everything that needed to be said has been said, but i do want to touch on a point of my own, and tell you all how you can help support the ongoing korean feminist movement.
it is not healthy to go about your entire life assuming that you will see the worst of someone eventually.
this is true for anyone you meet: an idol, a family member, a friend, and a complete stranger. i’m exhausted by all of the Hot Takes admonishing those who feel a sense of loss, sorrow, and disgust upon finding out that someone who they were led to trust could potentially be capable of doing something as heinous as what is being alleged against taeil.
“you don’t know these people” you’re correct! i most certainly do not.
“don’t put these people up on a pedestal” nobody is doing this by virtue of simply being a fan.
“as a boy group stan you should always keep in mind that men are shit.” are you starting to see my issue, yet?
you are not naive or stupid for believing the best in someone, even if this is a person you have never met and will never know on a more personal level than as a fan of an idol. i am exhausted with the seemingly popular belief that its somehow healthy or normal to navigate through life operating under the assumption that everyone around you has the capacity for violence and harm. it is not healthy. as a survivor of sexual abuse and harassment, one of the first things i had to regain over my life was a sense of control and sanity. this meant ridding myself of the fear that i could be re-victimized at any moment. statistically speaking, it was always a possibility. but realistically speaking, i was doing far greater harm to myself throughout my recovery when i was afraid of the men around me.
if you are an nctzen, if you are taeil biased, do not feel bad about being blindsided by this. do not start assuming that the other members must have been aware, or must be involved, or must have committed some crime of their own; that is simply not how the real world works. if you are a fan of boy groups, keep your standards high but do not view this as a reason to be hyper vigilant of the people you stan. do not assume the worst until they present you with the worst. expecting people to be decent is not idolizing someone. its when you refuse to hold them accountable to the actions that they have done that you cross the line between being a fan and being an enabler.
why is this important to keep in mind?
we as kpop stans are in a particularly unique position. we are consumers of a byproduct from a culture that is undergoing a severe women’s rights crisis.
just recently, a series of telegram groups were discovered in which hundreds of thousands of users created and shared artificial explicit materials (deepfakes) involving women and young girls spanning from kindergartners to university students to adults; family members, classmates, coworkers, etc. the figures of the perpetrators involved could potentially be as high as 300,000 individuals, and a overwhelming majority of those in these chats are believed to be men.
this incident is coming right off the tails of another, more infamous group of telegram rooms nicknamed “the Nth rooms”—where a number of men helped to orchestrate one of the largest cases of digital sex crimes in south korean history, victimizing over a hundred women and young girls for the purpose of disseminating violent sexually explicit materials.
even before the original Nth Room case, korean women had more than enough reasons to fear for their safety; molka (hidden camera) crimes were on the rise, with over 30,000 cases being reported between 2013 and 2018. korean women were being assaulted and killed in their homes and on the street for no reason (significantly high femicide rates are still an issue in south korea today). women were being prosecuted over the mere belief that they may be involved in the country’s feminist movement—experiencing professional repercussions over accusations such as reading a book, having short hair, or making a gesture. in the wake of this anti-feminist backlash, it became increasingly common for men to voice their discomfort for what they believe to be “radical” measures taken by korean women to ensure their safety and improve their futures. see, for example, rapper San-E who wrote a diss track towards feminists and is still able to walk these streets relatively unharmed due to his position of privilege.
the notion that you should always assume that every man you meet is a potential sex criminal or a misogynist is harmful simply because that is the exact reason why korean feminists have been working so hard to change the legislation surrounding sexual crimes for the last two decades. the ultimate goal of gender equality is having that reassurance that no matter what gender motivated crime is committed against you, you will be entitled to justice through the courts and free of the stigma of being a victim in society. korean women want to be able to interact with their brothers and fathers without worrying about ending up in a deepfake video. korean women want to be able to venture outside their homes at night without fear of being followed and abducted. korean women want to be able to use the restroom at work without having to check the stalls for microscopic recording devices. the idea that you should be weary of those around you and those who have gained your trust is detrimental to your mental health, and with this knowledge, korean women have been actively working tirelessly to ensure a future where they will not have to worry about this.
it could be your faves, but theres no guarantee that it will ever be or that it will never be. rather, work today to uphold the standard that women should be protected and hold those who have violated their rights as human beings to the full power of the law. keep the names of those who have suffered or died from violent crimes against women alive and their stories in the media. south korean feminists are asking for our help in spreading the news about the recent deepfake Nth rooms, because they are facing silence and noncompliance from domestic media outlets to do their due diligence in investigating this matter.
they are suggesting that you take korean news articles surrounding the deepfakes, or korean feminist posts discussing the telegram groups and any events that are being planned to protest for women’s rights, and run them through a translator if needed in order to share them with english speaking news media. the idea is that as long as international eyes are on the atrocities being committed against women in the country, the korean news cannot suppress their voices.
here are the twitter accounts that i know of who are taking the risk to share their stories and that of other south korean women:

On August 28, SM Entertainment announced that Taeil had been removed from NCT for unspecified sexual offenses. On social media, Internet users noted that SM Entertainment immediately removed Taeil from the team instead of ordering him to take a longer break. SM Entertainment shared the news and statement before the Korean media reported it, which caused even more shock and led to speculation about the seriousness of the investigation.

I have something to say...I was very annoyed with what I saw on X the day the news about Taeil being dropped from NCT because he is under investigation for sex crimes came out. Of course when something like this comes out people immediately try to point their fingers to the other members and question if they had known all along that someone they've been working with for 8+ years was capable of committing sex crimes. That's a valid question, I'm not going to sit here and deny it, but what annoyed me was the fact people kept talking as if anything related to the other members came out and confirmed these suspicions. Nothing specific about this incident came out for people to be all like, "There's NOOO WAY they didn't know!" How do YOU know? What detail between Taeil and his victim has you so convinced that the other members knew what was going on? We know nothing. Nothing official about his victim and his actions have been reported so why are we running rampant with all these rumors? Not only that, but all these hypotheticals are just taking the attention away from Taeil, the one that's under investigation for sex crimes. Now you're directing your attention to people who weren't reported to have done anything to anyone. You're paying attention to speculation instead of official reports from the police. Please...
Another thing that pissed me off was the spread of unofficial information provided by random twitter users. Information that hasn't even been confirmed being spread around like it is fact. There are threads that are full of random screenshots and translations that any non Korean speaker would have no choice but to believe is correct. Then, there are threads debunking these rumors or criticizing some of the translations because, according to native Korean speakers, they don't make sense and the hangul is fucked. Wouldn't anyone seeing this online just think to themselves: "Hey, you know what, since there is so much back and forth about this information, let me ignore this and believe the things that have been reported as facts. The facts being that Moon Taeil was kicked out of NCT because he is being investigated for sex crimes. If all those screenshots and stuff turn out to be true, okay." It's not that deep. I don't understand. The whole, "BELIEVE ALL VICTIMS" thing is dope and all but it has rotted some of your guys' brains, especially because it has become some sort of performative activism. You aren't thinking straight at all. You just want some random that ends up on your profile to see you're not a "Taeil apologist" (???) because you're retweeting or reposting all this random information. Go outside, please. Also, in this instance, we don't even know if the woman that filed charges against him is the same woman in these screenshots going around. So whose story are you really spreading around? YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW.
This lack of...media literacy is devastating to say the least. Again, all we know is that a woman filed charges against Moon Taeil and he is now under investigation for sex crimes. That is enough for me to tune his bitch ass out and never want to see his face again.
Lastly, something that is also getting on my nerves is that some fans are wording their issues strangely...They're saying things like Taeil "betrayed" his members...girl. No the hell he didn't. He showed them nothing but love and commitment. "We all waited for you and you go on and do this?!" Girl...You are not a victim. NCT is not a group of victims and NCTzens are definitely not victims. You don't know that man and that man has never touched you or violated you. You're just mad because you never thought you would have to hate him. That's all. You're acting like it's a personal attack to you when it isn't and you also don't know him personally so chill out. Now you're making this about yourself and non victims. LIke, can we FOCUS? MOON TAEIL WAS KICKED OUT OF NCT BECAUSE HE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR COMMITTING A SEX CRIME AGAINST A WOMAN.

Saw a tumblr user advise former fans to see Taeil's crimes as a reminder to never trust anyone, and while i don't really plan on posting about this because i'm not in the NCT fandom at all, i wanted to say something about this sentiment.
I understand where it's coming from, I do, but I don't think that's a healthy way to live your life.
If people break your trust, move on as best you can, and try to heal from that hurt. It's way easier said than done, I know, but if you never truly let things into your heart, you're missing out. I don't really have any, like, proof of this? But I hope it rings true.
You can and should be able to trust people - idols included, to the extent that you can ever trust someone you don't know. In the case of idols, just like, to not be huge pieces of shit. That's a fair expectation to have of anyone, idols included.
It gets weird and parasocial with idols, but you're allowed to look up to them and trust that they are who they say they are. Obviously not one hundred percent, because everyone has the right to privacy and to, you know, be human and make mistakes. But they owe you - because they owe everyone - to not be like Taeil.

So you wanna get into NCT, eh?
Part 3 - NCT 127 - More MVs and Social Media Links
Oh hey I'm finally back. It's been more than a day but life happens and it's only been like two days... or so? (it's been three) but let's get back into this!
So last time we covered a little bit about the members of the group and then I linked some MVs. I realised something I could have done there was link some social media accounts so let's do that!
There are general accounts for NCT on most of the big social media services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. There are also accounts for all of the subgroups, so NCT 127 does have their own accounts on all of those as well. I feel like the Youtube content deserves its own post so I'll get to that but 127 does have a Youtube channel as well.
The individual members share things like the Twitter and Instagram accounts on and off, taking turns sometimes to post on there, tho most posts are from the company. Facebook gets posts from the company and not from individuals very often. The boys do all have their own Instagram accounts tho, and they also all use Bubble to varying degrees, which is an app which a lot of kpop groups use where fans can pay to access special posts from idols that include text posts, pictures, voice recordings, etc. I have never been a Bubble user, but I follow everyone on Instagram so here's all of those:
Taeil | Taeyong | Johnny | Yuta | Doyoung | Jaehyun | Winwin | Jungwoo | Mark | Haechan
You can use those to become more familiar with the members and see some of the nonsense they get up to. Some of them post often and some post almost never so your mileage may vary with them as a tool, but I'm a sucker for personal social media accounts so I'm clearly following those all.
It's also worth throwing out there since I skipped talking about positions last time that Taeyong is the leader of both NCT 127 and also of NCT in general. He's also a main rapper, main dancer, visual, center, helps write and produce music and has since The 7th Sense was released, etc etc, you name it, he's probably done the thing. He's ridiculously talented, basically. (They all are.) I could list everyone's positions but there's tons of wiki pages and etc with those kinds of lists and I find them to be less helpful when you have a group like NCT where everyone kinda does everything a lot of the time and has multiple talents and jobs since the rappers might be singing or the vocalists might be rapping depending on the song and literally everyone is a visual etc. But that's part of why you might be noticing that Taeyong is front and center like... a lot. Very often. He's recognisable and has a distinctive voice and being the leader is a good extra excuse to focus on him.
Anyway, let's get back to the music! I somehow managed to come up with ten more videos to link to hit the max per post so you're getting another full variety tasting of 127's style and range with a special treat at the end.
youtube
Favorite (Oct 25, 2021) was the lead single from the repackage of Sticker and was not quite as divisive as Sticker but still a bit weird. Released right before Halloween, there's a whole vampire concept going on (GREAT) and the MV and live stage performances all have a weird electronic dance break 2 1/2 minutes in (BAD) that I am PLEASED TO TELL YOU is not part of the song on the actual album. The first time I watched the MV it threw me for such a hard loop that I almost hated disliked the song but when I listened to the album later on spotify I was like "wait it's gone!!!! it was all just a bad dream!!!" and I try to forget it until I do something like watch the MV to make a post like this.
youtube
We're gonna mix in some of 127's Japanese releases today starting with their first one, Chain (May 8, 2018) off their first Japanese mini album. Despite NCT's initial plan to have groups based in different countries and markets, they are still now in early 2024 only ABOUT to have their first Japan-centric subunit debut, which means that they've just been having 127 (and Dream) release some stuff in Japanese in the meantime. It helps that they have a Japanese member. Anyway Chain is just a great song so here it is.
youtube
gimme gimme (Feb 15, 2021) suffers a little from the eternal problem of kpop songs even in primarily Japanese having some.... wild? English lyrics (spicy disease? dead clowns? who wrote these lyrics? why did their native English speakers go along with this?) but despite the nonsense it's a catchy, mesmerizing earworm of a song with a tight MV with a lot of neat cuts and transitions and I have watched it VERY MANY times. I love it. Spicy disease and all.
youtube
In the first main NCT intro post I included WayV's version of Regular (October 8, 2018) and linked both this and the Korean version. I was going to include the Korean version and just link the English here since the Korean one is the one that I personally listen to the most, but then I noticed that the English version has like 66 million more views so I decided to reverse that and you get the English one. Anyway. All versions of Regular are great and the English version has some great weird lyrics too ("I be walking with the cheese that's the queso" is like... ultimate. Incredible. A+. How did Jaehyun record that without laughing? Legendary.). It's also, with Simon Says, one of the only MVs that has all ten members of NCT 127. It also has a CGI tiger, shiny cars, rockets going off, Winwin jumping off a building, there's just a lot going on.
youtube
Sliding back to Japan for a minute, I feel like I should include Wakey Wakey (March 18, 2019). I almost forget this song exists sometimes and I think it's because I just want to block out having seen the absolutely terrible wig they put on Johnny for this MV. Seriously why? The song itself is solidly in the weird but also very catchy lane that 127 does so well but I just keep thinking about the wig. Johnny had some long extensions for NCT 2020 that looked great on him, but this wig was just not it. My eyes are drawn to it every time he's on screen. I need to put this into my regular listening-only playlists and let my brain block that wig out the way I forget the dance break in Favorite exists.
youtube
127 started 2023 off with Ay-Yo (Jan 30, 2023) which was the (somewhat delayed) repackage of 2 Baddies, which we'll get to in a moment. I wasn't sure what to think of Ay-Yo at first but it has definitely grown on me despite having veered back into some questionable hair territory mainly for Taeyong (and I say that as a grown up late 90s punk kid who thought giant hair spikes were cool). The MV has some absolutely wild visuals mixed in, and the song is definitely outside of the realm of standard kpop releases even if it's not as weird as some others like Sticker. It's solid.
youtube
Okay so. Like. I honestly didn't really pay enough attention to the general reactions to 2 Baddies (Sep 15, 2022) to tell you how divisive this song was to most people, but it split one of my group chats VERY strongly and one of my friends has refused to listen to any 127 releases since then because she hates this song so much. I tried to get her with Fact Check at the very least and she's so anti this song that she still refused and I may have lost her on 127 altogether 🤣 It's mainly the chorus that she dislikes, and I'm a little back and forth on it myself sometimes honestly but also I have absolutely BLASTED this song while driving down the highway so it feels kinda like a guilty pleasure song sometimes. If you ignore the chorus the other parts of the song are so goooooooood and no one can deny that the last part of the bridge slaps. Plus there's a whole lot of shirtless Johnny and Yuta which you can never go wrong with.
youtube
Touch (Mar 13, 2018) is a little off from the style of kpop that I listen to regularly since it's a bit more in the bubbly poppy side of things that I don't always go for but the vibes are immaculate and everyone looks so happy in the MV and there's fuzzy sweaters and everyone smiles so much? It's hard to not love it. It's fluff and cheery and delightful.
youtube
I don't know if SM actually started the "track video" trend (short MVs that have an edited, cut down version of a song so they cost less to produce than a full MV- Lemonade is 3:10 on the Sticker/Favorite album, but this track video is 2:01 for instance) but they love doing them with NCT, and despite Lemonade (Sep 9, 2021) definitely deserving a full MV, since it wasn't the lead single it didn't get one but it did at least get a track video and was performed a lot on the music shows when they were promoting Sticker. It's catchy and has some clever work in the full version lyrics that involve titles of other NCT 127 songs and I've listened to it as much as or possibly more than Sticker.
youtube
I've covered all of the lead singles and there ARE some other track videos or special release songs like the recent Be There For Me that I could be using the last slot for but you know what? We're gonna go fully off the expected path and include Let's Shut Up & Dance (Feb 21, 2019) instead because it's wild and fun. 127 doesn't do much besides sing part of the chorus and do a bunch of dancing in this (on the ceiling? on the walls? in an alley?) but like. Lay is here too and the song is SO fun and an absolute bop so that's what we're closing this post out with.
So that wraps the NCT 127 music videos! I'm thinking the next post and the last of the 127 centric ones will be a guide to some of their Youtube content, since there's a whole lot, and that'll kinda set up expectations for the posts about Dream and WayV as well when we get to them. I think after I get through the main posts of MVs and content for all of the sub-units that I might do some special posts of performance videos for songs that don't have MVs just to get some of those out there, or I might just post a bunch of links to them. We'll see how I'm feeling and if my audience of like two or three people has any kind of preference (that's you, hey, yeah you, lemme know what you want from me).
This post is the third in a series of posts introducing new fans to NCT in a way that makes sense, by getting familiar with one subgroup at a time before moving on to the next. Linked down at the bottom is the intro post, and the rest will be linked as they're added.
Dedicated as ever to @catatonicrainbow and @poetry-protest-pornography 💖

I just finished reading your analysis of Taeil's predicament and, as per usual, I'm very appreciative of your rationality and measured response to emerging information. You're one of the only voices I've seen rising above the cacophony of rumor and blind hatred, & I think your words, however many or few people it reaches, are instrumental in pulling hurt fans back down to Earth. When I first heard the news, I was blindsided. I didn't know what to do with my perception of him. I spent the bulk of that day on Twitter, consuming people's opinions. But by yesterday, I'd reached the conclusion that nothing fruitful has ever come out of everyone needlessly speculating & riling themselves up. They can't effect justice or hasten the legal process, so it doesn't matter. No one knows anything, so it's mostly futile conjecture. I've also disengaged and just continued living my quiet, monotonous life, lol. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I hope you have a good day! Take care ~
As you said, there is no way we, i-fans, can assist the victim by typing on the Internet and speculating (and she seems to be able to take care of herself pretty well, she had the courage and will to press charges despite Taeil being a celebrety in an agency that can potentially back him up and meddle with the media). Our only job is to keep SM accountable and see the case through the end.
What we can do is lessen the damage done by supporting the group (Dream and WayV touring), Jaehyun's solo debut (help it to succeed, lessen his hurt of having to postpone his promotional activities) and each other. Turn our anxiaty into positive action. Spend that negative energy not in a destructive for us way, but a healing way (being proactive helps, it give the feeling of "I have it under control, I'm not a victim of the situation, things are moving for the better").
So don't think concentrating on Jaehyun's solo is "running away" or "making it about your bias (think of the victim!)". No, you are doing the right thing by taking control of things you can change, you can improve (your well-being and NCT's position).
On my side, I've seen several level-headed responses on X: calls to wait for more information and not latch on other members, to return to focus on the group. I was actually even surprised at the number of NCTzens who showed maturity.
However, there are plenty of people who latch on the case in a malicious way (who invent the rumours to get the kick out of the activity (trolling), who impersonate user agnes (who was proven to be an anti) and create new fake copy-accounts, who make it into another sub-unit war, involve other groups), making the situation for the fans even worse than it is.
If you are a sensitive person, the best solution is to avoid X and the fandom at large for some time. Take care of your mental state. Lurk on YT for a change. Content with Jaehyun is still coming up (It's live).

KPOP SOTD #1 | Yesterday - Block B
20/06/23
Tumblr media
Hello! This is my first ever post here on Tumblr! I know some people here might have the same idea as me but I just really wanted to post something haha! So, here is how I will format my posts:
1 - Random facts about each members within the SOTD (in this case facts about Block B members!) Some of these facts may be obvious so yeah ^^'
2 - a QOTD! You the user can answer the questions which I can ask! It is completely optional to answer the questions!
3 - A lyric from today's SOTD! The lyrics will be translated to English!
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
RANDOM BLOCK B FACTS! (These facts are taken from kprofiles!)
Zico thinks that girls with a lot of piercings are pretty.
Taeil has slept in the bathtub up until 4AM.
Kyung said that Minhyuk (B-Bomb) is very selfish.
Jaehyo doesn't like being on camera too much, especially on his own.
U-kwon's nickname is kwonraemong because he looks like Doraemon so it's a mix of their names.
While Kyung writes his songs, he likes to use his imagination and put himself in different situations.
P.O is shy around girls.

Which K-pop group did you first listen to?

this is just to check in myself because i also try to keep up and i actually fear that there has already been spread so much misinformation that it is blurring everything, including my understanding of the case. the first article you linked also explicitly states that the crime taeil comitted was in june this year. that's how it has been translated throughout and also what you get out when you put it through google translate.
the claim regarding the now 18 year old started with a instagram user who identified as the victim and basically posted a lot of allegations online.
given that the police explicitly said that the crime was comitted in june this year (as well as filed in june) i thought that the story regarding the then 12 year old is at least not the case that the police is investigating. this was furthered by the fact that the police is clearly trying to protect the woman's identity, which stands in contrast to the user's very explicit online postings.
i'm sorry if this sounds dismissive regarding the instagram user. you don't have to fact check me. i just read your post and started to question everything again. because i read about the crime being committed in june and thought "okay that is clearly not a six year stalking and spy cam case. that is something else entirely"
no like there has genuinely been so much misinfo being spread and i honestly have no idea where the idea that the victim was born in 06 even originated from, as well as the six-year time frame. but everything i’ve read translates it as he was suspected of/investigated for crimes since june. i wouldn’t rely on google translate for anything lol it’s notoriously awful. with korean being such a nuanced language, the language barrier definitely makes it easier for things to quite literally got lost in translation. but it is still my understanding that regardless of when the crime was committed, they didn’t start looking into him until june.
and in regards to the instagram/agnes person, i genuinely don’t believe that that’s the victim, at least not the one in the case that we know of. details about her are being kept very private, which totally makes sense, and i would be wary of anyone posing as her. i’ve already seen people making fake kakao talk screenshots as if taeil isn’t already guilty enough.
