This time the title caught my eye. I fell down a rabbit hole looking up うしみつ and now I’m so intrigued about the premise of this story.

Summary:

Graduate student Komiya-kun is lodging on the second floor of "Two Four Bookstore", a second-hand bookstore in an old Japanese-style house.

The landlord of the boarding house is the elegant Youzou-san and whom Komiya-kun has slightly wicked feelings for.

One day, a mysterious customer appeared to Youzou-san...?

This is a fluffy and cute mystery about a landlord who "changes into a child" × a graduate student with a one-sided love♪

-----Translation Notes-----

*specifically from 2am-2:30am; I’m sure the phrase うしみつ comes from 丑三つ時 which translates to “ third quarter of the hour of the ox”. The phrase comes from when Japan used to count time by using the Chinese zodiac. Here’s an English article giving more info about it.

Basically there are 12 Chinese zodiac and each animal was assigned 2 hours of the day hence “hour of the ox” “hour of the rat” etc. The hour of the ox is from 1am to 3am. Each animal’s time period is further divided into four 30-minute parts.

The idea that ghosts appear during 丑三つ時 comes from the ancient Chinese belief in 陰陽五行 - the cosmic dual forces (yin and yang) and the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) which exists in everything. According to the idea of 陰陽五行: 丑, the hour of the ox (which also represents the north-northeast) is yin and 寅, the hour of the tiger (which also represents the east-northeast) is yang, and 丑寅, the northeast (3 am) which is in the middle, is in the direction of the gate of oni (Japanese ogre-like demons). In other words, it is the direction in which oni enter and exit so it was believed that 丑三つ時 had a close relationship with the gate of oni.

丑三つ時 is the eerie time when people, creatures and vegetation in the natural world sleep and shadows are strongest which is the reason why ghosts appear and remain so strong. The hour of the ox has long been said to be the hour that leads/is open to the world of the dead. There are also stories of people doing rituals at 丑三つ時 to fulfill wishes or curse.

I guess this is why 丑三つ時 is translated as “the witching hour” in some Japanese-English dictionaries and it’s probably a big clue as to how Mr Elegant Landlord transforms into a kid lol
