God, she hated guys like that. When she'd been in college, working retail jobs and hustling to survive, Amara had been on the receiving end of one too many shitty customers. Difference was, back then, she had to live by the motto: the customer is always right. Well, not anymore. The moment the rude patron turned to leave, a scowl found its way onto her features, voice raised, "Eat shit, asshole. Trust me, if I see you back here, I'll shove your face so far up that cake, you'll have raspberry buttercream coming out of every hole."
Leaving the man stunned, Amara shuffled up towards the counter, first eyeing the display then the worker, a bright smile plastered on her face — like she didn't just chew out some random man in a bakery. "Piece of advice — never apologize if you've got nothing to be sorry about. In fact, that guy," she gestured towards the door where the customer had left through, "Should be the one apologizing to me for showing his stank-ass face. ——- Anyway... those specials you mentioned. Tell me about 'em."
Astrid was having a not so great shift at the bakery. Not only had they been slammed with orders, but she was trying not to argue with a customer who was not pleased with the way their cake had turned out. Always wanting to avoid confrontations like the plaque, the woman could feel her hands start to shake as the man's voice got louder and louder. Simply trying to correct him that yes, the order was for a raspberry buttercream filling, not a strawberry one.
She apologizes for what seems like a million times (even though she's not sorry) and eventually, he storms off exclaiming how he "will never come back here again!" Leaving Astrid flustered and blinking back tears, she almost doesn't notice the next customer coming in through the door.
"Oh, um, I'm sorry," she spoke. "What can I get for you? Interested in knowing our specials for today?"

pumpkin pitch: triptych
genre: vaguely psychological horror-comedy + surreal fantasy
ownvoices queer, mentally ill, and neurodivergent rep
cws: abuse, ableism (internalized and externalized) towards people with mental illnesses, particularly cluster b personality disorders, sui/sh, violence, body horror
The teen ward of Eastwood Geysers Mental Health Facility is not the worst place to ride out a dubiously-biblical apocalypse you may or may not have caused. For 3 ward residents with rocky family relationships and serious anger issues, harnessing their new magic and taking on the role of hero seems to come naturally--but though Eastwood's beige walls can keep out the rampaging nature spirits, it won't let them escape the demons in their heads. Figurative and literal.
Amara's finally away from her abusers. Turtle's finally not alone, with their friends around 24/7. Astrid's finally in the perfect position to get the attention she's always craved, almost unconditionally. But as the three of them become more entangled, both with their nature spirit roommates and each other, it becomes clear their problems aren't as escapable as they'd hoped.
excerpt: (warning for sui attempt)
When she’d fantasized about this moment countless times before, she’d usually imagined pouring all her worldly misery onto the wrinkled notecard to be a bit more…eloquent. But the actual note ended up being more along the lines of “Dear Mom and Dad, you suck and are horrible parents and I’d rather not exist than continue living in your house, which is why I’m gorging myself on your medication. This is your fault, and you should feel bad.
Fuck You,
Amara
P.S. I’m a filthy girlkisser xoxo”
It wasn’t the brilliant piece of literature she’d hoped for, but it got the job done. Besides, it was very Amara to forget everything crucial when she actually needed it. She’d probably remember the perfect words like, 5 minutes later in hell or something.
Then, she’d retrieved her mother’s sleeping pills from the back, glancing around her parents’ bedroom as she hopped onto the edge of the bed. She’d need to measure these carefully, or everything would be ruined. She’d probably only get one shot at this, and even though in the worst-case scenario she could just jump in front of a car later, that’d hurt a hell of a lot more than sleeping pills.
The walls were dull and beige, smelling vaguely of cleaning supplies. The room was bare of any meaningful adornment except for the tiny drawings of cats she’d doodled when she was six. The bedsheet, although prettily patterned, was flimsy and could not give warmth. She drew it in around herself anyway, trying to shake the cold that had settled deep in her. Figured the last room she’d ever be in would have painfully boring decor.
It was supposed to be a quick, painless death. Minus the choking on your own vomit bit, but you weren’t supposed to be conscious for that.
But staring down at the innocuous looking tablets, she was faced with the sharp pungent reek of her own mortality.
What if it didn’t work? What if it did?

Hi! I come from the danmei fandom and wanted to ask you if you pls have some good novels from the west to rec? What I'm looking for is: BL, fantasy & good plot. I'm not looking for political agenda just for a good read where the focus is on the plot and romance. I seriously don't know where to start looking. I tried checking out recs on google but honestly after the danmei books mostly everything looks unappealing to me. I was hoping you could help me out. Thank you in advance!
Ooo, yeah I can come up with a few things.
(All links are Amazon, but of course if you can buy elsewhere it's recommended, especially author sites. But if you buy from these links I get like a few pennies.)
The Magpie Lord (and rest of the series) by K.J. Charles - This is honestly the book that got me into reading modern m/m historical romance before I ever discovered danmei. 19th century England, magic, romance.
The Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk - An incredibly long series of adventure novels set in a Lovecraftian 19th century America, starring a shy scholar and brash detective who get pulled into supernatural highjinks and romance together. The author's other series might also appeal. I'm a big fan of their Hexworld series which is recommended if you like the ideal of shapeshifters and their destined soulmate partners.
Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale - Fantasy European setting in a boys boarding school. Kiram is the first from his religion/ethnicity to attend this prestigious school and has to room with a boy who is supposed to be cursed by hell. Magic, religion, culture clash coming of age, and a fantastic romance. I love this whole world and series so much.
The Archer's Heart by Astrid Amara - Fantasy India setting with a rigid caste system where homosexuality is punished with death. So the romance between a prince and a warrior has very real stakes. Lots of politics and suffering for the characters. Sorta epic political fantasy but with queer romance. Definitely danmei esque.
The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling - An older series in which a young man is taken as an apprentice to a thief/spy/rogue in a typical European fantasy world. Very interesting political and magical intrigue. The romance between the two main characters doesn't become textual until the second book and definitely is not a main focus or very in your face, most likely because of the age of the books. BUT I love everyone in this bar so so much. And they are explicitly the fantasy equivalent of married in later books, so it's not NOT a thing.
The High King's Golden Tongue by Megan Derr - A young man is trained to be consort to a king his whole life, but the king in question isn't interested in him because he's still mourning his late husband. Fantasy world with normalized queer relationships, slow burn romance development, a very gentle book without a lot of drama. (I haven't read the rest of the series but I think each book is a different couple.)
Okay and then a couple additional recs with special circumstances.
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland - I haven't read this one yet because I just haven't had time, but I've read some of their other works and trust that it's good. The author is @ariaste whose MDZS fic you may have read.
The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard - The reason I haven't read the above yet is because I've been deep in reading this and all the related books/stories in this world. Absolutely I think danmei fans need to read this book. The worldbuilding is fantastic and immense. The political intrigue is more West Wing than Game of Thrones. It's a book about making incremental change from inside a flawed system. And it's a book about two men opening their hearts to one another glacially slowly, with so many barriers in the way, but so much love.
The caveat is that it's not precisely a romance or primarily a romance so it doesn't meet your criteria. It's super long (again for danmei fans) but while these two (an emperor and his secretary) love each other so much, it's not explicitly romantic or sexual? At least not yet. (Next week, sequel next week aaaaaahhhh.) So...it's a weird one to rec. Which is why I've been waiting and putting off writing it's own rec post. But it's a magnificent novel I can't say enough good things about.
So yeah, that's what I've got for now. Thanks for asking, clearly I'm always just waiting for someone to ask me to rec things.
Other folks feel free to add your own recs in reblogs if there's stuff I've missed.
#Anonymous#books#book recs#danmei#m/m romance#threerings' recs#asks#there are some non-fantasy books I could rec#or second-tier recs#or f/f recs#so let me know if you want more

The Wanderer * Halbrand (Sauron)/OC (part 3)
Summary: In spite of her mother's wishes, Tilda wanted to see the world beyond their village. She wanted to know its secrets, and to find her father as well. But when orcs attack, she will soon be swept off on an adventure far different than the one she imagined. And it will lead her not only to unanticipated discoveries about her heritage, but about her own heart, as well.
Warnings: original female character, multi-OC fic, angst, potential for toxic relationship, unrequited love
Other: Please let me know if you'd like to be added to a tag list!
Part One Part Two
(The Sundering Seas)
The next time Tilda opens her eyes, she is almost immediately convinced that she must be dreaming.
Blue skies drift overhead, the occasional bird wheeling by, and issuing their plaintive call. A soft breeze rustles through a few stray strands of her hair. Wrinkling her brow, Tilda realizes that said breeze carries with it the scent of salt water, and it is that realization that pulls her out of her unconsciousness, her entire body jerking upright until the movement is stalled by a hand placed upon her shoulder.
"Easy. You suffered quite the blow to the head."
"Mother? Where—where is my mother?"
"We could not find her, child."
Turning to face the source of the revelation she never once wished to hear, Tilda looks upon the older woman's form, bedraggled and dripping, just as the others appear to be as they rest nearby. She allows herself to emit a shaky sigh as her mind catches up to her current locale, her body seeming to sag closer to the boards beneath her, whether she wills it to or not.
The hand resting upon her shoulder lingers, but even still she cannot tear her eyes away from the woman's sympathetic gaze. She cannot quite bring herself to fathom everything that led them here. Here, to the deck of a boat, of all things, when the very last thing she can recall before losing consciousness is the distinct sensation of her feet resting upon dry land.
Her brow furrows, and she opens her mouth to inquire after the reason for the change, but before she can get a word out, the woman who informed her of her mother's absence—Astrid—is moving towards her, the hand that is at Tilda's shoulder falling away as the older woman shifts to cup her face between both hands.
"You are not hurt?"
"Where are we?" Tilda questions, the barest shake of her head the only response she gives to answer her would-be protector's apparent concern, "How did I manage to get—"
"How did you manage to get yourself on a boat?" A voice from somewhere off to her left finishes for her, finally pulling her attention away from Astrid, and towards its source instead, "That would be on my account."
Narrowing her eyes, Tilda regards the man standing nearby, the familiar hint of teasing that rests behind the words at odds with the severity of the situation they are now mired in. She wonders at the man's unfailing ability to come up with some sort of deadpan remark, no matter their circumstances.
For a moment, she considers issuing a similar reply of her own, if for no other reason than to show she is not fazed by his apparent nonchalance. But before she has the chance, the sound of Astrid's soft words are garnering her attention once more, as the woman appears to have taken a waterskin offered by one of their other companions to hand her way.
"Here. Drink."
Taking the offering, Tilda does as she is told, the water soothing the ache in her throat that she had not even noticed was there. And when she is done, she hands the skin back to her helper, who returns it to Eamon, while Tilda repeats the self-same inquiry from before.
"What happened to lead us here? The village—"
"The village is destroyed, Tilda. Were it not for this boat, we'd never have made it out alive."
"And the—the others? Bain? Amara?"
"It is likely they are gone as well, child. We did not see them in the fray."
The words cause a bolt of fear to race through Tilda's veins, the shock of it all settling inside of her far more quickly than she might have liked. Tears burn at the corners of her eyes, and she does what she can to blink them away, her teeth moving to dig into her lower lip for a moment before she replies.
"Halvir?"
"He is gone as well."
Tilda supposes she truly ought to have known…
"Ain't no use in worryin' over him now, girl. Dead is dead and there's no changin' it."
"Magda?" Tilda persists, even in spite of the disheartening responses delivered to her thus far as Astrid moves to stand nearby, her heart nearly seizing within her chest as she takes note of not only Eamon's almost pitying gaze, but the older woman's slow shake of the head, as well, "Nora?"
"All of them are gone."
"And how—how did we manage to secure passage on this boat?"
"From the very same person who took you out of the fight in the first place."
Whipping her gaze to the man who has spoken, Tilda takes a moment to piece together the precise meaning resting behind the words. She recalls the blow to the back of her head, and realizes Halbrand is the one who struck her.
Her eyes narrow up at him once again, perhaps even more so as soon as she registers the slightest twitch at the corner of his mouth. Once again she is brought to the realization that this is a man with secrets of his own, and it is that realization that provokes her next words.
"You had no right."
"Would you rather I let you die?"
"I would rather you allow me to attempt to aid my friends. My family."
"Your friends and family were already dead."
Tilda's mouth opens to issue a retort, but closes just as quickly, Halbrand's words stinging far more than they have any right to, given the reality of what she already knows in her heart to be true. He is right. She knows that, just as well as she knows that even if he was not, there was very little she could have done for her friends either way.
A thought that has her lashing out almost before she can stop it, her words bitter—almost resentful—whether or not she knows that they are wrong.
"And how many did you have to sacrifice to allow us on this boat?"
"Tilda!" Astrid scolds, the words causing the younger woman's features to fall almost immediately in response as her posture seems to slump, discouraged, and perhaps demonstrating a small portion of remorse, as well, "This discourse is not aiding any of us."
Knowing that her companion—a woman she has known most of her life—speaks true, Tilda says nothing, managing a singular nod and what she hopes will suffice as an apologetic glance for Halbrand's benefit as well. Regardless of her grief, she knows taking that overwhelming feeling out on others will hardly serve her well.
It will not assuage the vice like grip of pain twining its way around her heart, and it will not stop the exhaustion that the past day is drilling into her frame, no matter how she may wish for it to be so.
In spite of that exhaustion, however, Tilda forces herself to stand. She forces herself to move past Astrid, and Halbrand, and the others, to move toward the very edge of their boat, instead. Looking out at the sea that surrounds them, while the breeze fans her hair out like a flag stretching behind her, Tilda does her best to force grief and exhaustion down alike…
Wherever they are heading, now, the feelings will do her little good, in the end. They will not bring her mother back, or Bain, or Amara, or any of the rest that have passed. And if pretending they do not exist will keep her from experiencing any further remarks or quips from certain individuals?
That is a consequence that she will gladly accept.
Some time later, Tilda abandons her post, and heads off in search of Halbrand, not to continue their earlier dialogue, but to attempt an apology, instead. She finds him easily enough, standing with Eamon and Doble, the half-amused lift of an eyebrow very nearly persuading her to lose her nerve.
All three of the men turn to eye her almost at the same time, but still, Tilda steels her nerves, reminding herself that this is what her mother would expect from her, even as much as it may make her feel like a child.
"Might I have a word?"
"Have all the words you like."
"Alone?" Tilda clarifies, offering a significant glance to Halbrand's companions, even with how she knows that such an act may be considered to be rude. In truth, she hardly wants an audience for what it is she is preparing to do, pride having been something of a flaw in her nature for as long as she can recall.
Mercifully, Doble and Eamon seem to sense this desire, both of them rising and offering her small nods before heading off towards another section of the boat. And even as Halbrand offers her a satisfied smirk, she steels herself against any desire for turning back before her task is complete.
"Is it your habit to boss around men who are twice your age?"
"I was simply making a request."
"And how eagerly both of them moved to comply," Halbrand drawls, amusement resting heavy behind the words in such a way that Tilda is forced to bite down on the inside of her cheek to keep her silence, "I suppose I ought to fall in line?"
"That is not what I came here to ask of you."
"Then what is it you came here for?"
"To offer an apology," Tilda murmurs, averting her gaze for a moment, because it is no large task to anticipate the satisfaction that will soon become apparent in her companion's gaze, "If you will accept it."
"So you actually intend to give me a choice in the matter."
"This surprises you?"
Halbrand does not immediately reply, forcing Tilda to divert her attention from the planks of wood beneath her feet, to look him in the eye, instead, a gesture she honestly should have anticipated, given the knowledge of the man that she possesses, thus far. He is toying with her. Deliberately dragging the moment out for however long she will allow.
And judging by the satisfied expression he wears, she is walking right into the trap.
"I should not have spoken so harshly," She says, then, her tone carrying some small hint of her apparent frustration, though she does the best she can to prevent it from making itself fully known, "I am sorry."
"Are you, now?"
"I am."
"Are you absolutely certain of that fact?"
For what feels like the hundredth time, Tilda's eyes narrow, a slow huff escaping as soon as she recognizes the mischievous glint that is so apparent behind Halbrand's own gaze. But before she can decide whether or not to issue a retort in kind, or simply walk away, Halbrand is taking control of the conversation, himself.
"Forgive me. I should not taunt you."
"And yet—"
"And yet, it would seem that neither of us is perfect."
Caught off-guard by the surprisingly sincere nature of the reply, at least on its surface, Tilda's mouth hangs open for a moment before she manages to gather her wits and close it once more. Unsure of what to say to further the conversation, she prepares to depart.
She only makes it about a half of a step away before finding that she is stalled in her tracks once again, only this time it is not Halbrand who diverts her from her path. This time, it is Astrid, the look upon her face nearly unreadable as she closes the distance between them to seize at Tilda's arm.
"Come."
Recognizing the firm demand behind the singular word, Tilda does as she is bid, allowing her companion to shuffle her several paces away without even attempting to protest. In truth, Astrid moves her away from Halbrand with such haste that she nearly trips over her skirts as a result.
Still, Tilda does not utter a word, instead following along as the older woman moves to stand at the prow of their boat, the act leaving Tilda to focus her attention solely upon the sudden apprehension in her frame.
"What is it?"
"What was it he said to you?"
"I don't know what you—"
"What did he say to you, Tilda?" Astrid repeats, her expression leaving no room for any sort of argument or attempt to pull away. It is surprising, to say the least, considering her ordinary reservation of a harsher, more suspicious nature for those they do not already know.
But they know Halbrand. Both of them do, just as Astrid had known Tilda and her mother for years, dwelling nearly next door to one another in the village that is no more. Over the years, Tilda had always believed that all of them knew one another well. Well enough, at least, that she can say with reasonable certainty that, as aggravating as Halbrand may sometimes be, he is still someone that they might trust, whether or not she always approves of his methods, herself. He had, in fact, been instrumental in saving her life.
Even if Tilda hardly wants to acknowledge the implications behind such a reality, she is not so foolish as to pretend it does not exist at all. And that is what sparks her hesitation, her brow furrowing as she tries to decipher the motives behind Astrid's apparent disdain.
"I was apologizing. Something I presume you might have expected, given my earlier words."
"And did he accept?"
"Well enough," Tilda replies, aware of how Astrid's expression seems to soften, though it does not fully lose its wary quality from before, "If he bore me ill will, he certainly did not show it."
"That is not what concerns me."
"Then what does?"
As soon as the question escapes her lips, Tilda realizes that Astrid does not seem inclined to offer any sort of immediate reply, the realization causing her to settle herself to the task of looking out at the waves beyond the prow, a soft breeze rustling at her hair while her hands come to rest upon the rail. The muted conversations of the rest of their companions barely registers, while her eyes drift closed to savor the warmth of the sun upon her skin.
For a moment, Tilda simply remains silent, knowing that, whatever Astrid's reply might be, it will certainly not come if forced. Something that is only confirmed by the sigh the older woman allows to escape before finally deigning to speak once more.
"I do not believe he is the sort to earn all of your secrets, Tilda. And I fear your mother would be telling you the same, were she standing beside you right now."
"All of my secrets?"
"You know of what I speak," The older woman explains, the confusion that is so apparent in Tilda's own features quickly fading as comprehension dawns, "A few days ago, Eamon overheard the man offering to aid you in things that would be better left alone."
"Things having to do with my father, you mean."
"Knowing who he is will not help you, Tilda. Your mother's secrets are better left alone."
"I do not wish to know who he is. I want to know why he left us."
Astrid's answering frown speaks volumes, but it is not entirely enough to assuage the lingering frustration Tilda feels over a topic that has long been an issue of contention between them. It is hardly enough to persuade her to abandon her cause.
She knows that her stubborn refusal to let the matter of her father's identity go is likely selfish. After sixteen years of her mother tirelessly providing for them both, Tilda would be a fool to pretend otherwise. Always, the guilt springs up in tandem with her frustration over her mother's insistence upon secrecy, along with Astrid's steadfast support of those decisions, but even that is hardly enough to persuade Tilda to stop. To convince her that abandoning her search for her father would be best.
For as long as she could remember, she has known a strange sense of emptiness when considering the man, whoever and wherever he may be. She has wanted to fill that void, as best she can. And when Halbrand had learned, through sheer happenstance, of that desire, and offered his aid a mere few days prior, Tilda had all but leapt at the chance.
Something which her mother's friend clearly cannot support, whether or not she understands her desire, her next inquiry proving that very fact all on its own.
"And if knowing why he left only hurts you? What then?"
"I suppose it hardly matters now, as I will never have the chance."
The retort slips free before Tilda can stop it, and almost immediately she feels the familiar twist of regret winding its way around her heart. She forces herself to face the fact that it is hardly Astrid's fault that they are no longer in possession of any basis from which to initiate a search. It is not her fault that Bain, and her mother—everything she has ever known—is gone. But before Tilda can make any sort of amends, or gather her wits in even the smallest of ways, so that she might summon the wherewithal to turn to look upon her companion's face, a strange rushing sound pulls her attention to the water stretching out on all sides.
Eyes blowing wide as she catches sight of the oncoming wave, as well as the shadow resting beneath it, Tilda turns to call a warning to the woman standing beside her. To the others resting unawares on board as well. But as soon as she attempts to begin, something—likely the shadow resting beneath the wave—drives into the boat with enough force to knock her off her feet, the sound of shattering wooden beams the only sound she hears before her body is sucked beneath the waves.

what does love feel like to you?
everything
nothing matters but this. not you. not them. this moment, this love that you've built, that is what matters. it is all that there is. you will do anything to keep it this way; no matter what line you have to cross, who you have to step over. the ends justify the means, after all; and for you, this is everything. they are everything.
How absolutely true

"Fuck, that's actually fully what happened," Astrid said with wide eyes, turning to Amara to nod slowly with the realization. "That sucks though, right? Like — I know that these places can up charge like crazy and don't pay people enough for what their stuff's actually worth, but at least you're still supporting a small business, or whatever. And sucks for us, getting stuck with all the Hillary Clinton shit."
She abandoned the rack she was combing through to examine the flannel. "Hm, yeah, I don't hate that. Maybe if we can find some decent pants that could be a cute fall vibe." She turned to scan the wall behind them, lips pursed, and reached out to grab a pair of corduroys. "How do you feel about these?"
@amarawash
Amara couldn't hold back the chuckle, feeling a shared defeat with the woman across from her.
"Just like their beachfront homes, they probably left all the good stuff to their grandkids who are now selling their grandparents old junk on Depop." Her tone flat, as she grimaced at the garment her friend held up.
Her eyes scanned the rack, a hint of interest in her gaze as her hands reached for a flannel. "Maybe, this isn't so bad," she said, pulling the item from the rack.
