Like the last time we seen him was when the gang showed up in spade to rescue the day, and that was like chapter 280 something? Like, bro? Where is he???

It was so funny in the beginning to joke about the fact he was missing from the arc, but now? His siblings and entire squad are fighting a paladin and he is nowhere in sight bro.

At this point it’s not a nap, it’s a full blown coma 😭

Also it's my opinion, if you disagree that's totally fine, but you won't change my mind

So starting from the bottom, the D tier, we obviously have Solid, only started respecting his younger sister after it turned out she's much stronger than him and saved their whole family, bullied her before and was a bitch. He may have a neutral/decent relationship with his other siblings but that's because they were also bitches to Noelle

Langris is in the D tier too for obvious reasons, like sorry, but that's true. Maybe bro changed later, maybe he even held hands with his brother and fought by his side later, but that's only because Finral was a good brother to him, so fuck Langris

In the C tier we have Nozel. AND DON'T TRY TO CHANGE MY MIND. I get that he couldn't tell anyone about the curse, but what's that gotta do with letting his younger siblings THAT HE HAS POWER OVER bully Noelle??? AND JOINING THEM?????? Bro said he wanted to protect her, but than didn't protect her from her own family who she should feel safe with. No one can make me like you, Nozel Silva. Byakuya Kuchiki did it better.

I also placed Baro in the C tier, maybe because I don't really remember this arc, but I think he wasn't a good brother? But I wouldn't say he was the worst. I DON'T REMEMBER, SORRY.

Now we're starting with the B tier, which is a tier for people who are brothers but I can't really rate them? Maybe they didn't act really 'brotherly'??

(I know that now you're probably scared because you haven't seen a certain someone, but bear with me please)

We're starting this tier with Gordon, Gordon has a younger sister, they seem to like eachother, are really similar and that's all we know. So he's in the middle.

Next we have Neige who I also may not remember but he listened to and trusted his brother, so idk what to do with him, but I won't just ignore him here 🙄🙄 Kay, next

Kiato. Once again, him and Kahono have a close relationship, but we can't really say something about what kind of brother he is from that, maybe they just get along well. So middle tier for him.

Next is Kirsch. The guy is a beauty obsessed narcissist and Mimosa doesn't like him, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's a bad brother?? And even tho I didn't pay much attention to him I don't think we see him interact with his sister much?? And that's the reasoning behind this

Than we have Lumier, who's also a brother even tho I almost forgot (I keep forgetting who's sister Tetia was 💀). And I mean we either saw him with Licht, or Licht with Tetia during the flashbacks so we can't say much about his skills in being a brother, they just had a good relationship

And last in this tier we have the Zogratis brothers, Dante and Zenon. Well they are bad people, but it doesn't mean they're bad brothers. Once again. IDK WHAT TO SAY ABOUT THEM, NEXT TIER

This tier is special.

It's the Gauche tier.

Putting aside the way he acts and reacts to his sister, he might be too obsessive about her, like not letting Asta talk to her, howEVER, THE WAY HE GAVE HER A MIRROR THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR COMMUNICATION BUT ACTUALLY IT'S ALSO TO PROTECT HER?? THIS IS SO CUTE, COME ON.

Every time I think about them I curse Tabata that he made Gauche the way he is because if he didn't have those disgusting reactions to her I woul probably love his character.

HE WOULD LITERALLY BE THE TYPE OF BROTHER WHO'S COLD TO EVERYONE BUT HIS LITTLE SISTER, THAT'S CUTE, GUYS

Moving on to the A tier, starting with a questionable choice that is Asta and Yuno.

Maybe they're not really brothers, but they are brothers to me. They irritate eachother any chance they get but at the same time we can see that they are really invested in the rivaly, like most of the times if not all we see Yuno smile is when he's talking to Asta, they're so brothers, THEY SHARE A BIRTHDAY

Next we have (manga spoiler) Nacht who I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT BECAUSE HE WASN'T IN THE TIER LOST I MADE TO PREPARE MYSELF??? But he goes to the A tier because yeah. I don't like this guy, but his backstory with his brother is so sad AND THE WAY THEY COMPERED NACHT AFTER MORGEN'S DEATH TO NIGHT WITHOUT A MORNING KILLS ME. HE LOVED HIS BROTHER SO MUCH, I CAN'T :((

Another manga spoiler, but my dearest Yami Sukehiro???

Black Clover is back! 🖤

I can’t even say how much I was looking forward to those three chapters. Every release for 1.5 years I was hoping to see what happened to Yami. He was my favourite character from the first moment on and is still number 1. And damn, Tabata, you delivered!

Like I said, as I’m in Japan right now of course I had to buy the Jump GIGA to have those chapters at home with me (and I was walking into a supermarket wearing a kimono, great experience!). I just didn’t expect the magazine to be actually this GIGA. 🤣

Look at the colour spread, it’s so beautiful! Tabata really took my favourites and placed them in this autumn mood. 🥺

I just had two points to criticize with those chapters:

1. They were too short, I just can’t have enough Yami / Nacht / Ichika content.

2. Ichika calling her brother “Yami”. But thank goodness, it was a translation mistake. It really bothered me a lot.

She calls him “ani ue” (like Leopold does with Fuegoleon) here, like almost every time in those three chapters. Alternatively she calls him “onii-chan” and that really warmed my heart! ❤️

When I started to write “Embrace of Darkness”, Nacht and Ichika had never met before. I shipped them so hard nevertheless, and seeing them interacting now is EVERYTHING for me! I mean, look at them, they are perfect for each other!

She even kicked his ass so he would get up. Yami’s words already hit hard, but I had the feeling that Ichika’s speech really got him up. It seems like he neither wants to be a tragic princess who wants to be saved. 🤣

Speaking of Ichika, damn, she is so fantastic! Did you notice her features softened after she found out the truth? She looks so beautiful and more like the sweet, innocent child again. She left her anger behind and can be more like herself again.

The reunion of the siblings was made so beautiful. I hope they have more moments together. Just look at them. And Yami looks so badass with his Kijin form, simple but very effective.

I love how Yami is this protective man. He really does everything for the people he loves and cares for, and it seems like all those years he never forgot about his little sister and that he was not strong enough back then to protect her. He fought to become stronger, so he would be able to protect the people he loves. He really is the heir of the Yami clan, with him being the first to handle the drug and becoming the Kijin.

I just have to mention the combo spell of the Yami siblings. I was hoping so much they will get one, and here we are. 🤩 It’s perfect! and Yami is so proud of his sister and that she became so strong.

Now speaking of Nacht. Shit, I love this man and I just want to give him a hug. It’s so cruel he has to fight his dead brother and of course he struggles to fight him. He killed him once and doesn’t want to kill him a second time. I hate to see him cry, but I can’t help that he looks so pretty doing so. 🥺

His new devil union forms were so damn cool! I read others find the second one kind of underwhelming, a four devil union was expected to look more like the first one, but I think it’s perfect. I like the effect of minimalism here and I’ve got the feeling that really being able to unite with all four would make him look more human again.

Nacht always manages to drop the hardest lines in Black Clover. His dream about becoming a Magic Knight with Yami and Morgen made me cry so hard, and I hope he will find his peace one day.

Tabata, please let Morgen have some last words for his brother! He needs that so much. 🥺

I’m sure I forgot half of the things I wanted to write, but to sum it up: I’m very satisfied but need more at the same time. And please, let Charlotte react on Kijin Yami. 😄

First off, I went to reread chapter 14 so I could better follow the events of chapter 15 and-

I also got to relive that MM-MM GOOD Julius x Aika tension. Very good chapter to go back to.

ANYWAYS! STUFF FROM THIS CHAPTER!

Solidly confirmed that Ellie is, in fact, a god now. A god of sorts. In a Pantheon. Which is, like, awesome! But question: did her eyes literally burn away those people? Or is it metaphorical but her eyes still literally were something dangerous? I mean, I'm leaning towards those burning eyes literally doing that but I just wanna be sure...

The gods not needing grimoires feels like a parallel to devils not naturally having grimoires. Like, they can steal corrupted four-leaf grimoires. But they don't just get one.

And the conversation just goes into the craziest of directions. The implication of the rather cold reason why Aika took in Eillie. Jayce and Arthur's disagreement. A High Priestess at some temple?! Okay so Aika's necromancy on Evan isn't going to fully restore him?! Um... Rude? How dare you revive him and then tell us that truth! 😭

And this whole discussion is happening while Dorothy, Fuegoleon, Jien, Marx, and Julius are just... there. Watching.

Julius is probably able to take this craziness. He's processing it better than the other four. The others are probably like...

"WHAT IS GOING ON?!"

And then Julius was alone. AND LUCIUS! AAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Is the plan foiling intentional on Aika's part? 🤔 She has a lot of thing planned out and has failsafes. But even with Time Magic she can't see into other people's minds and stuff. But considering she knows about JuLu, who knows how much she knows about Lucius' plans.

JULIUS WITH THE CALL OUT POST! Julius' determination coming from experience rather than obsession. It's great. Love that for him.

Oh my gosh! LUCIUS WHAT?!

I do love the parallel between Aika and Julius, with the way their darker egos overlapping their usual appearance. That's a cool thing to note.

Ellie saying "aim at his soul" and Jayce being all "yeah, that advice sure does help! (sarcasm)"

LMAO! Arthur not having a soul to interfere with! Get rekt Lucius!

Ellie really is stepping into her new role as a deity. She's figuring this out quick, like a goddess! Also the little shift of her and Jayce's dynamic. 😆 I'm not expecting a ship to sail but it's funny to see Jayce going "👀 Well that's new." He thought he knew her but now there's so much for him to learn.

But maaaaan... Julius is going through it. The Fate spell thing and then Aika going berserk and then Lucius... ALL IN ONE DAY!

... Hey is Aika's berserk mode still going on? Last we checked she was, uh... In the snowy mountains?

The Marx moment! I think it's because Marx has been on the mind lately but aaaaaawwwwww! 😭💖 Marx cares for his boss and Julius cares for his assistant! It's sweeeet!

And here at the chapter's end we establish the... establishment of two new squads (and considering the insignias of the assassins... I wonder what's gonna happen with that).

7 days is a really short time-lapse not only to get stronger especially if your trainer doesn't speak the same language. So I think that Yuno &co. are gonna lose, get turned into whatever lucius like to call those angel looking creatures , flee , establish a resistance or have a tea party with the devils and Lucius, ANYTHING YOU WANT but the final fight ain't happening in 7 days. They are not ready.

Liebe: The Dramatically Ironic Demon

So, I was going through my word-vomit drafts looking for hot takes, and I came across an interesting phrase that I apparently wrote down and then immediately forgot about:

“Liebe’s two primary modes of existence can best be described as, “Stoic Silence,” and “Incandescent Fury.”

And I still stand by that, but I feel like I’ve been sidetracked by the Incandescent Fury facet of his character, when the Stoic Silence aspect is arguably more important, due to it being Liebe’s default state of existence.

Sure, Liebe has his Berserker Rages, and they are legendary, with the two most noticeable instances occurring when Asta fought Dante, and then again during the Devil Binding Ritual.

And his rage comes from a place of extreme pain--specifically it’s triggered by reminders of the death of Licita, his adopted mother.

In other words, He’s a demon who feels such grief at the loss of a human life that it causes him to lose all control over his emotions.

Demon or no, that makes him extremely sympathetic, as well as a deeply compelling character.

(Honestly, I truly admire that Tabata has never, well, ‘Demonized’ the Demons. Even Zagred was clearly a person, rather than an inexplicable monster. Albeit, it goes without saying that he was an absolute shitbag of a sapient being. Same goes for the Dark Triad’s demons. They’re godawful people, but they’re definitely people.)

Anyway, Liebe as a Stoic Silent character is significant in that I find it extremely funny.

Liebe is an absolute saint of a demonic being.

Even after being tortured for his entire childhood, and being told it was deserved because it was the privilege of the strong to oppress the weak... he never tried to hurt anyone when he came to the human realm, despite the fact that doing so would have fit nicely into the only worldview he’d ever known. 

Then, after being possessed and being forced to watch as Lucifero killed Liebe’s mother using Liebe’s own hands... and spending years alone in what was essentially a solitary confinement cell with only his own vows of vengeance for company...

Well, he was still pretty affable when it came to helping Asta. It doesn’t seem like he ever tried to withhold his powers. Which is even more remarkable when we learn that when Asta is in black form and gets injured, Liebe gets hurt as well.

It’s entirely possible that this only started happening when the two of them formed a contract... but I would be surprised if that was the case.

Liebe doesn’t tend to talk about his own pain. Hell, during the first time they spoke face to face in the Witches Forest, I’m pretty sure Asta punched him, but Liebe never said anything about it.

It was never really clear how aware of the world Liebe was while stuck in the grimoire. The best I can discern, it seems like Liebe can only perceive the outside world when Asta uses antimagic. But I don’t think it’s necessary for Asta to be in black form, or even to be fully conscious, based on how the grimoire seems able to recall the swords even if Asta is passed out, or even to eat new swords, as it did with the Demon Destroyer sword in the Elf Reincarnation arc, and with Yami’s Katana, after the battle with Dante.

The point is that Liebe definitely has at least some awareness of the outside world, and that is a fact we can be certain of.

Why?

Because he knows Asta.

When they were trying to figure out Union Mode, Liebe thought to himself, “When [Asta] gets like this, about 10% of the time his idea is sheer genius... the other 90% of the time, it’s crap.”

And that’s hilarious, extremely true, and also something that he would have to know Asta fairly well to understand.

And his regard for Asta only seems to be growing. During the fight with Lilith/Namah, he marveled at the fact that, thanks to Asta, he can use Union Mode to fight against the highest ranked Devils of the first floor, who used to quite literally throw Liebe around when they were mad.

But here’s the thing.

All of this character development? Our understanding of Liebe and his motives? That’s only been revealed to the audience.

Asta doesn’t know that Liebe is essentially his brother.

Asta doesn’t know anything that’s motivating Liebe, beyond whatever basic emotions he’s feeling.

Not that Asta particularly cares. He would pack bond with a rock if it stayed still long enough.

It was perfectly in character for Liebe to barely say ten words to him for the year and change that Asta was in the magic knights before they formed a contract.

It’s now perfectly in character for Liebe to keep most of his thoughts to himself, since that’s just the kind of person he is.

But the lack of communication is honestly starting to seem kind of like the inverse of that one avenger’s meme:

Liebe: “You gave me control over my own destiny.”

Asta: “I don’t even know who you are!”

...and that’s pretty damn funny.

Also Sekke is a fine example for Karma being served up to you. I kinda love how Tabata adds this into the show subtlety and funnily.

1) He chooses Asta to square off with during the magic knight entrance exam, in hope that his powers would be more distinct and powerful against someone that has totally no powers. But it totally bites back when Asta pulls an uno reverse, using his anti magic sword LOL Because of this, no captains wanted him, altho I would think that Sekke's powers had potential. Well thankfully or unfortunately for us, Captain Jack wanted him but totally forgot about his existence LOL

2) he stumbled into King Augustus just accidentally and the King thought this brave magic knight saved him when in fact he was just trying to run away from everything. Instead of telling the truth, he played along and then got upgraded to be the king's attendant, doing all kinds of mundane chores until he couldn't take it and begged for Captain Jack to take him back. BUT NO, Captain Jack pulls another uno reverse on him LOL saying he doesn't know he was he.

Karma at it's best and Karma being a bitch. So boys and girls, don't ever try to take advantage of others + don't ever try to steal credit from others.

Okay class is dismissed.

BUT BACK TO THIS PRECIOUS ANONY I'M SO SORRY I GOT CARRIED AWAY but Nozel is really sucha a sweetheart I would marry this man in a heartbeat.

Were you the one who came up with the characters' names this time, Nomura-san?

Nomura: Chiba (the lead scenario writer) was the one who came up with Machina and Rem's names, but I was the one who came up with the names for the rest of Class Zero. I wanted to make them sound like codenames, and when I was looking for a cohesive set of 13, I came upon the names of playing cards. Because "Joker" sounded so enigmatic to me, I thought "This'll be good." I had already drawn the illustrations of the characters, so I applied the names of the cards while looking at each of their faces.

Tabata: The names of King and Nine really fit their image perfectly.

Did you come up with their weapons while you were drawing the first group illustration?

Nomura: That's right.

Tabata: About half of them were strange things at Nomura's request. Typically, you wouldn't think of choosing things like a flute and cards as weapons, right? (laughs)

Nomura: I caused the staff a lot of problems. They were like, "So... How do you fight with this?" I thought of it as an extension of "BC -FFVII-" where each character's weapon displayed their individuality, so I was just concerned about creating too much overlap.

Tabata: I thought "He's going to come up with something really interesting", but the staff on hand weren't familiar with Nomura's personality, so they took everything very seriously and were like, "She plays the flute? Really?"

Nomura: I was very relieved by the fact that Deuce's fighting style makes an impression. I was surprised when I first saw her in motion.

Tabata: Your strange requests became the important hurdle that helped us avoid making the content too conventional.

Outside of Class Zero, Emina is a character who made a strong impression.

Tabata: It was actually Kitase who was in charge of Emina's event.

Kitase: No, it was actually an idea the female staff members came up with, and then I just set up the camerawork. The staff who were involved had their hands full with other work, so they asked for my help. It seems the camera control was complicated in that scene, so it came around to me because I was used to it...

Tabata: The idea behind Emina's event was to "provide content that meets a wide range of tastes." (laughs) We wanted to give players a variety of camera angles so they could choose the one they liked most, but Kitase's first camera was particular to his own specific interests (laughs), so it had to be reworked.

Emina and Kazusa are connected, aren't they?

Tabata: Yes. I didn't say anything about Kazusa and let a few female staff members do what they wanted with him. I just told them to make sure that the content would "stick with players." Because of that, I feel like Emina and Kazusa became sub-characters who stayed in players' hearts.

Even the moogles were memorable this time.

Tabata: They’re cute, aren’t they? To tell you the truth, I actually prepared a scene to introduce the group of moogles known as the Cranberry Knights, but Chiba forgot to put it into the game, so now it's just a memory.

Nomura: That's a shame. As soon as I saw the moogles' designs, I even said, "We should make merch of them right away." (laughs) At the moment, I'm thinking about designing moogles for “FF Versus XIII” that are similar to the ones from “FF Type-0.”

Tabata: I was shocked when I found out that Moglin's official name is a long, foreign name. I heard that it was Nomura's idea, but...

Nomura: The scenario staff were the ones who came up with it. I was also surprised when I heard it for the first time during voice recording. If you look at “Kingdom Hearts” where I've chosen all the names myself, you can tell that I have a preference for simpler names. (laughs)

Ooof, sorry - I’ll respond to the three together… I just honestly don’t have much to say for each chapter. I need to reread the chapters but like, meh 😂 

Starting from chapter 207 I guess;

This one was alright, I did like this moment

It shows that Yuno can feel something coming from Licht, it’s kind of sad when you think about it. When things settle down I wonder if Licht will try to speak to him? Unfortunately Yuno won’t understand… but I hope Licht gets to have a moment with what could have been his child at the very end.

Gotta admit the spell Licht ended up using was amazing, I love how despite their distance in the Shadow Palace he was able to absorb power from his allies and use it - as we see later on; it doesn’t even take that much power from the other elves too. So they can keep fighting. 

I also really worry for Fuegoleon and the others in the lower sections of the Shadow Palace!! I know they’ll be fine but that weird spell the demon used, hopefully they can avoid it and come out unscathed… Also like, where the hell is Mereoleona? Glad to see she won and all, but where the hell did she go? Lol - I think she’s the only one we didn’t see. 

I did get this relating to the ending of this chapter as well. Honestly, I was hoping he’d get to the point of maybe the demon we saw back in the Witch Forest arc would pop up again? He’s been oddly absent this whole arc.

I was rereading it just now and I don’t remember Asta’s Devil being mentioned at all? Lmao! Seems as though this Devil doesn’t recognise the power, so it’s likely they never met before. We don’t exactly know much about their race - so I hope that Asta’s Devil maybe eventually doing something within the next couple chapters to shed some light on them. Would like an info drop on their race by the end of this please and why exactly they target 4-leaf grimoires so badly. 

Now on the most interesting part of the chapter. Yuno’s new spell. While I notice a lot of people were frustrated about him getting another spell and power up of sorts - I do like the design of it. There’s also the fact that most of Yuno’s magic already takes some sort of weapon form? I love how he’s basically mixed Tetia and Licht’s magic together in this one spell too.

And would this technically be Asta’s first spell? Or something along those lines. I like it. 

With Gueldre and Revchi though… I totally forgot about them, I do wonder how their magic would work against the Devil? Would Gueldre’s magic work against the Devil’s magic and would Revchi’s chains have an effect on him? Would honestly be interesting and I kinda hope we could see it. 

And honestly at this point I am not sure what I think about the Fana battle considering it’s still going on somehow, lmao! It’ll likely not have a conclusion, in my opinion.

This one I honestly struggle to figure out what to think. The Devil seems to have lost his cool though, so that’s always fun lol! I like how Yuno boosted Asta like that though, but unfortunately the Devil seems to be able to change the location of his heart. 

It’s a shame we have a break here, but Tabata surely deserves a week off at the very least. Hopefully I can keep up with these asks! Thank you for sending them in even if I have responded to the previous one! I do get to them eventually.

I can see this fight ending soon though, it seems to be reaching it’s end - so it’s just a matter of waiting for that… I don’t think he’ll be defeated just yet though.

Bookshelf Briefs 3/31/21

Black Clover, Vol. 24 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – New arc, new villains, new desperate fighting, new nameless characters being killed to give our named leads resolve and fury, and the same old fighting. I’ve said before that, in ripping off every shonen series around it, Black Clover is not really doing a bad job. That said, it’s also not standing out—by definition, this is gonna be pretty generic. Asta shouts and beats up bad guys, Noelle snarks at him, Charmy is back to being superdeformed and eating far too much, etc. You can easily see why this is now the third-longest-running series in Shonen Jump. But you can also see why it’s roundly mocked, and is never going to be at a point where it amazes the readers with its clever surprises. – Sean Gaffney

Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 9 | By Ryoko Kui| Yen Press – I forgot to brief the last volume of this, which means it’s been almost a year and a half. This “caught up with Japan” series, however, is always worth a deep read, and this time around, after some amusing but goofy stuff involving succubuses, we get to the core of the volume, which is Laios and Kabru’s contrasting viewpoints. Laios’ desire to have a community in the dungeon where everyone can live in peace and harmony… and also eat animals, which theoretically would be happier dying like this than with their current circumstance, contrasts with Kabru still seeing Laios as a dangerously unhinged madman who won’t stop going on about eating the things that kill everyone in the dungeon. Must read, still. – Sean Gaffney

Fiancee of the Wizard, Vol. 2 | By Syuri Nakamura and Masaki Kazuka | Yen Press -This volume moved a lot faster than I was expecting. It also leaves the titular fiancee on the sidelines for most of the book—there’s a battle to defeat the demon lord, but given she doesn’t have much magic or fighting skill, she’s not involved. The wizard IS involved, and we get quite a few scenes from the POV of his party, featuring a hero who I will politely call “naive” and two more savvy characters, including a princess who Filimena assumes is exactly the sort of person he will immediately fall for. She’s wrong, and as always Edy’s inability to not be an awkward jerk masks his true feelings. This ends with a wedding, but there are apparently more volumes. – Sean Gaffney

An Incurable Case of Love, Vol. 5 | By Maki Enjoji | Viz Media – The series ends with the 7th volume, which is good, because this is the one where I started to get a bit annoyed with the characters—Dr. Tendo is usually very good at understanding Nanase, but he’s very bad at communicating his own wants, needs, and desires. The sister of the woman he was unable to save is now in the hospital, reminding him that he really does want to do this research—but he also loves Nanase, and does not want to be separated from her. If he managed to communicate this properly to Nanase… well, OK, the series would likely then be six volumes instead of seven. Miscommunication is the lifeblood of most shoujo and josei romance titles, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. – Sean Gaffney

Magus of the Library, Vol. 4 | By Mitsu Izumi | Kodansha Comics – Word of warning for this volume: you will meet about 25 new cast members, complete with character bios. Fortunately, I don’t think we will have to remember them all at once. In any case, most of this volume is a standard “first days at school” sort of story, complete with the stern teacher, our hero stressing out about which path he will be taking, and a reunion with the person who was the biggest influence on his life. Now comes the question of where the story will be going as there’s a bit of an implication that the mentor is going to be kicking down a few pillars of society. Oh yes, and there is also the gorgeous art, which is still probably the main reason to read this series. – Sean Gaffney

Our Teachers Are Dating!, Vol. 2 | By Pikachi Ohi | Seven Seas – We continue to read the Pixie Stix of yuri manga, and it certainly delivers, being so sweet you may want to read Inio Asano afterwards for balance. There are a few “new couple” problems here, mostly as they haven’t really opened up to each other yet because they’re still in the first bloom of love. Most of this volume revolves around the school festival, so we get to see them compete in a three-legged race, walk around buying things from their students, dress in each other’s work outfits (and, later in an omake, in each other’s old high school uniforms). They are also still very physically attracted to each other—sex is plentiful here. Still a must-read for those who like sweet yuri manga but without the high schoolers. – Sean Gaffney

Penguin Gentlemen | By Kishi Ueno | Yen Press – Sometimes something magical can happen when a manga creator throws seemingly random and disparate interests together in a work. In the case of Penguin Gentleman, that oddly compelling combination consists of good-looking clothes, good-looking men, and good-looking… penguins?? At its heart, Penguin Gentleman is an informational and educational manga about these aquatic, flightless birds. Ueno’s enthusiasm for them is catching; I felt like I had to share all of the interesting things I was learning with others. However, it’s the manga’s ridiculous conceit that makes it so entertaining. For whatever reason (a reason actually is given, but it’s not at all important), the main characters of Penguin Gentleman are penguins who have taken on human form. And dress in tuxedos, of course. And work together at a bar, because why not? There’s not really much of a story, just the humor resulting from translating penguin behaviour into a human setting. – Ash Brown

Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Vol. 12 | By Yu Tomofuji | Yen Press – There’s a celebratory parade at the start of this volume… one which Sariphi is not participating in, despite the feelings of the king. Now, to be fair, this allows her to have an adorable adventure with a platypus who is trying to grow stronger (and also see the King), but it does not change the central problem, which is that even though Sariphi has managed to win over most of the court by now, the relationship between beastmen and humans is still fractured almost beyond repair. So she decides to act as an envoy to bring a peace offering… with results that are amusing but also a little alarming. We’re clearly coming close to the endgame here, and I like that this volume has Sariphi taking control. – Sean Gaffney

Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 11 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – At long last, Zen and Shiroyuki are taking that important step—they’re moving in together… well, OK, not quite. Zen is having Shiroyuki moved into his section of the palace, with the rest of his aides such as Mitsuhide and Kiki, who are still… kind of teased? You get the sense the author knows folks really want them to be a couple, but also doesn’t really want to go there given their regular interaction is so much fun. Speaking of Kiki, she also gets to pose as Zen’s supposed bridal candidate, mostly to get the rumors off his back, because he is NOT ready to go full public with his herbalist just yet. That said, the cliffhanger promises a sea change in this story. Still must-read shoujo manga. – Sean Gaffney

We’re New at This, Vol. 4 | By Ren Kawahara | Kodansha Comics – Thank goodness the author realizes that they could not have a young, horny married couple who are constantly turned on by each other be virgins for TOO long. Yes, at last, our leads have consummated, oddly as a result of the normally steady Sumika forgetting tickets to a concert they were going to. This is framed with a flashback showing her stern, unforgiving father yelling at her, and contrasting this with the far more easygoing Ikuma forgiving her. This is really good, as it gives good character background, explaining a lot of why Sumika is the way she is, and also allows for a good reason that they finally can move past embarrassment or overexcitement and show how much they love each other. Oh yes, and still funny. – Sean Gaffney

The Weather Channel is predicting light showers in 40% of the area, or is it 40% of the time ??  It’s going to be 50 degrees, so at least it won’t be a freezing rain.  Plan on a 40% chance of getting wet on 40% of your body.  

Armando volunteered to lead our much needed mobility/flexibility play session.

Warmup:     Tabata’s     Hollow-Rocks alternated with Plank Shoulder Taps.   Four cycles.

Strength WOD:       Deadlifts        3 Reps EMOM  X  15 Minutes.     Start light, warming up and gradually increasing weight as you go.

Notes:

We enjoyed a tiny tad of misty rain for the first half hour, and then it really rained the last half.

The rain drove everyone under shelter.  Nobody wanted to do the WOD  in the rain since every bit of it required you to be horizontal on the deck.  Since Miss Linda and I did the WOD earlier, that only left 14 of you to sardine yourselves in our scant undercover spaces.  But the gang cooperated and everything worked out fine.  

Hey !!?  In the category of SINGLE DUMB-BELL E.M.O.M. WOD’s, could there possibly be a more exhausting 15 minutes?  I think all of you were very surprised.  And just think...you could take just one DB on your next vacation, and you’d have workouts covered.  (Herb said he always takes 3 Dumb-Bells with him on vacation).  HUH ??

A certain sub-set of athletes were absent today.  I suspect that they were doing an elite workout at 6224, and then watching NFL football on the famous “Wall Of TV’s”.  That’s a good thing, because due to the rain, we only had room for our slugs.

Zac brought Cole.  We squeezed him into a tiny space, gave him an 8 lb DB, and he did great.  I forgot to give him a T-shirt.

Asta is really focused on becoming WK and his character is completely oblivious to Noelle. Y’all forget that Asta treats Noelle almost the same as everyone else and his harem? Heck he even forgot abt sister Lily cus he’s so focused on saving the world😭 are we going to have to wait another 300 chapters before Asta realizes too? What I will appreciate is that her self-improvement doesn’t seem rooted in romance but rather her romantic feelings for Asta stems from the acknowledgment that he was the reason why she was changing for the better. To simplify that, I mean that Noelle isn’t improving because of her crush on Asta, but rather she has a crush on Asta and finally admitted to herself because she realized she was improving cus of him🥰🥰 and I really really really love that and honestly, props to tabata for maintaining a good vibe and conveying it properly in his storytelling😎🙏

But still not an Astelle shipper yet💀

Another reason why is that, if I was Noelle’s friend, I would totally discourage it because would y’all really tell your friends to go after someone who’s not really interested??

I will start shipping it when it’s no longer one-sided. When Asta begins to also notice Noelle and return her feelings and mistake her tsundere moments for dislike and create some really cute misunderstandings, then I will become the biggest astelle shipper you know👹🙏 I just really dislike one-sided attraction guys 😔🤚

Pandemic Training Diary

Week 1 Days 5, 6 & 7

I started out Day 5 in less pain than in the previous days, but my energy level was very low. Still not sleeping much. Rather than taking days like this off I negotiate with myself on low energy days that the workout can be low intensity, that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Better less intensity than no workout at all. Today was scheduled to be a Plyometric based workout. Plyometric is just a fancy way of saying bounce. I have one of those Rebounders that sit around in most yards, but you can do all of these exercises on the ground or on the floor. Just be careful to stay on your toes during the standing exercises. When you rest on your heels the impact is absorbed through your bones and joints. When you’re on your toes the muscles carry most of the impact. I’m still using the Tabata based Circuits because they seem to be optimum for keeping your metabolism up. (See my previous post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of Tabata based theory). I repeated each circuit twice. My first circuit started with simple Straight Leg Hops on my toes x 100 to get my heart rate and metabolism up. I followed that with Catch Chins (I use the patio railing and just drop gently and catch myself in a Pull Up position) x 20, Plyo Push Ups (You can just bounce on your hands from a Push Up position if you can’t do Plyo Push Ups) x 20, and Plyo High Knee Jumps(You jump as high as you can while driving your knees up to your chest. If you can’t do these, just hop a little higher and drive your knees up just a little.) x 20. My next circuit started with Boxing Change Ups (You just start with one foot forward, stay on your toes and snap the rear foot forward and then back.) 50 from Left Lead and 50 from Right Lead, followed by Push Off Chins (The exact opposite of Catch Chins. You start at the bottom of a Pull Up Position, feet on ground, and Push Up and Off. Move your feet closer to make it easy or further away to make it harder) x 100, Plyo Jump off of the Rebounder (I have to be very careful to land on the balls of my feet to avoid further damaging my back. If you don’t have a Rebounder or are not that advanced, you can just hop a little forward. Rest. Turn around and Hop Back. Stay on your toes.) x 10 (You can do more if your intensity is lower.) and finish with Rebounder Sprawls (You can do these on the ground, basically like Burpees without the hop. You can lower the difficulty and intensity by doing them off of a sturdy object chest or belly high) x 20. Last circuit, starting with High Knee Runs on the Rebounder x 100 (You can do walks or just alternate lifting knees. Doesn’t have to be high, just keep the knee in front of you), with Catch One Arm Rows (Same as Catch Chins, but with a lower hand position. You can do both hands if you don’t feel stable or safe with one) x 50 Each Arm, Side Jump On and Off of Rebounder (You can hop side to side or just step side to side to engage those Glutes. You can also do higher reps if you can’t manage intensity) x 10 and Medicine Ball Overhead Slams on the Rebounder (You can use the ground, touch a Dumbbell or Weight to the ground and lift it overhead or even just touch towards the ground and lift your hands overhead) x 20. I finished with a Seated Yoga Series. Then rest and write. Did a walk with a friend later, but really struggled with that. Think I overdid it. I’m prone to seizures when I get over tired and I came close today. Forgot how much energy Plyo workouts take out of your body. Should have toned it down. Was able to walk Benji after some rest, but it was mostly just me following him around while he sniffed at things. Too tired to do much else.

Day 6 was scheduled as a Lower Intensity Day. I took a walk on my own and then another walk later with a friend. Felt okay, but didn’t let myself push it at all after my experience yesterday. Walked Benji with some Yoga Breathing and Stretching.

And Day 7 was a full day off. Good thing too. Still not sleeping and struggling with pain. The dangers for someone like me of being trapped indoors is that my mind starts to consume itself, which leads to no sleep and depression, along with increased pain. It’ll get better when the weather gets better and I can hang out in the yard more. Benji helps. Makes me laugh pretty much every day. But I made it through the week and did most of what I set out to do, despite the challenges.

That’s it for Days 5, 6 and 7, and for Week 1. So far so good...

Sunday started at 3:30 am (right after Daylight Savings) with an hour trip to the airport, and 3 flights and 2 layovers, and really bad allergies which meant sinus pressure and a runny, raw nose all 15 hours or travel. 

But Os met me at the airport and got pizza and ice cream and was more than happy to keep my needy cat busy when I crashed at 7 PM.

Monday: Absolutely beautiful day. Sunny and 60s. And will be for the rest of the week.

Unfortunately, that is unseasonably warm for this region. I am so ready for Spring, but not because we are royally screwing the Earth.

Despite being torn about global warming, Os and I decided we couldn’t pass it up, so we did a C25K training outside. Day 1, Week 1, because I guess my body forgot what elevation was while I was gone for spring break.

One of the beavers that lives in the ponds off of the trail was out. I have named him Archibald.

We ended with a quick leg and core workout a the gym.

Tuesday:

After-work tabatas on the trail. 

Absolutely Meh. I had zero motivation.

But 30 minutes of Cardio was done.

At least it was lovely. And I saw Archibald again.
