Fictober 5th - “No, anything but that!”
This is part of #Fictober22, original post HERE if you want to follow or write along. Just some drabbles I’m doing, for fun. ✌🏼
“I’m sorry Eric, I’m just not feeling well.” Donna clutched her pregnant belly and Eric felt a pang of guilt for even making her apologize. “I don’t think I can help you set up the crib today, and it’s definitely a two person job.”
“No, no,” Eric soothed, and he set a hand on his girlfriend’s back, guiding her back towards their bedroom. “I’m sorry. Of course, you should rest. I’ll - I’ll try to figure it out myself.”
Damn their procrastinating, Eric thought. They’d kept saying they’d set the crib up next weekend, and then the next one, and then the one after that until, well - they were about to run out of weekends. Baby-free weekends, anyway.
Donna’d started having Braxton-Hicks contractions - Kitty called them false labor pains, but it meant real labor was just ahead. Red had slapped Eric’s shoulders, chuckling, and told him to get the damn crib ready, dumbass.
“I’ve got this,” Eric assured her, trying to hide the panic welling in his voice. “I’ve got it.”
Donna shook her head. “No. You won’t be able to do it alone. But you know who’s surprisingly good at this kind of thing? Jackie. I’ll call her.
“No, anything but that!” Eric shook his head vehemently.
But it was too late. Donna was on the phone, and in just fifteen minutes, Jackie Burkhart was at their door.
“I’m so glad you called me, Donna,” Jackie nodded. “I’ll have that crib built in no time. Well, Eric will. But I’ll tell him what to do.” Upon arriving she’d promptly heated up some tea for Donna, and now she filled a mug and sent a grateful Donna on her way, back to bed. Then Jackie turned to Eric.
“Where’s the instruction manual?” she asked snottily.
“Over there, I’m guessing.” Eric gestured to the large cardboard box the crib was delivered in. He hadn’t touched it.
“Open the box, Eric,” Jackie commanded. She handed him a pair of scissors and primly took a seat on the edge of an ottoman. “I’ll try to use small words so you can understand.” She gave Eric a tight smile.
He growled and snatched the scissors from her, then opened the box and spread the contents out on the rug in silence. When he found the instruction manual, he handed it to Jackie wordlessly. She looked over it and then slid to the floor to inspect the pieces.
“Okay, we need four of these thingies,” she held up a long white piece, but Eric shook his head.
“We only have three.”
Jackie scowled. “What do you mean we only have three? We need four.”
“I mean there’s only three.” Eric scowled back. “What do you want me to do about it?”
“Well check the box or something,” she said, exasperated.
Eric shook the box, and the missing long white piece fell to the floor between them. His face turned red, embarrassed, and Jackie snatched the piece in her hand, vindicated.
“Ha,” she snapped. “Follow directions, Eric,” she taunted him, but when he muttered an apology under his breath she let up.
Over the next thirty minutes, they successfully assembled the skeleton of the crib. Surprising both of them, after their initial quibbling they were able to set aside their bickering and work together. Jackie’s natural leadership abilities and prior mechanic experience shone through, and Eric’s craftsmanship from putting together his models lent itself to the task, too.
“Is that screw tight?” Jackie inspected over his shoulder as they finished attaching the headboard to the base of the crib.
Eric checked it himself, and nodded. “Yep.”
“Are you sure?” Jackie teased him. She tossed the Phillips screwdriver she’d been holding into the toolbox, like she was taking a break for a while. “I want my godchild to be safe while they sleep.”
Eric rolled his eyes good-naturedly. “Right. And I have no vested interest here.”
They did take a break to go have a pop in the kitchen, and as they sat down at the counter Jackie said, “You know, Eric, we were almost a good team back there.”
Eric took a thoughtful sip of his Coke. “I’m pleasantly surprised at how not awful that turned out to be.”
“Aw,” Jackie lifted a hand to her heart. “Eric. That’s one of the nicest things you’ve said about me.”
Eric nodded his head sincerely. “I really, really meant it, Jackie.”
“You take directions well,” she said, turning to compliment him.
“Huh,” Eric said. “Tell Donna that, will you?”
“Sure,” Jackie giggled. “You know Eric, we’ve hung out together - just us - twice now, and you haven’t hated it,” she reminded him. “Remember when we registered for gifts for your wedding?” Eric slowly nodded. He remembered. Jackie sipped her Tab, and smiled. “We’re kind of friends, Eric.”
Eric laughed. “No, we’re not,” he said reflexively. Jackie tilted her head, but she didn’t say anything. Eric thought about it for another moment, and then his eyes widened in horror. “Oh my god. You’re kind of my friend!”
Jackie’s laugh was more of a cackle now.
“Oh my god,” Eric begged her. “Please don’t tell anyone.”
Jackie covered her mouth, still laughing. “I think - I think they might already know.”

chapter: 1/? | words: 1.5k | in progress
summary:
diverging from s01e13 ski trip, what would have happened if kelso had started an affair with his girlfriend's mom?
teaser:
“Say Michael, have you and my daughter been dating very long?”
“Oh yeah, it’s been almost 4 months now.” Kelso stated proudly, but then pouted, “But it feels like it’s been forever. Jackie won’t even let me reach second base with her and I’ve been really good about not doing it with anyone else because she wants us to lose our virginities together, but it’s really hard, Pam.”
“Oh, I can just imagine. Jackie is stubborn just like her father.” Pam seemed to have made a decision. She shrugged her shoulders, the coverup slipping down her arm artfully and exposing her barely-held-together-by-a-skimpy-bikini-top breasts. Michael’s eyes zeroed on them like a beacon and Pamela smiled, taking a step closer to the younger boy, “Say Michael- if you ever get bored… waiting for Jackie…” She placed a hand under his chin, raising it up so that their eyes met, “how about you come and find me?”

night fever
hyde x reader
drug tw (weed)
[been playing around with this for a while, let me know what you guys think and what should happen in the next part! (i meant to post this last night but got baked and forgot lol i’m sorry)]
.:.
point place, wisconsin
february 17th, 1977
9:03 p.m.
location:
eric forman’s basement
.:.
you laughed as you passed steven the bowl, your whole body shaking. he grabbed the yellow glass piece, grinning as he shook his head at your uncontrollable laughter. he can’t remember exactly why you all were laughing, but at the hurt look on kelso’s face and the smug look on donna’s he could take a guess. you were sitting on his lap and hanging with the others out in forman’s basement, doing what you guys always did on nights like this.
“i feel so bubbly!” you exclaimed as you leaned off steven’s lap to take a sip from your soda, the glass bottle clicking against your rings. you stared at the dainty gold pieces on your hand- studying the way they shined in the dim light before the flavor of the orange soda caught your attention, the taste unbelievable as you felt the fizz in your mouth, almost downing the whole bottle. you probably would have if steven hadn’t nudged your back.
you grinned as you set the bottle down on the basements makeshift table, looking behind you towards steven before looking around the circle.
steven and you were sat in his usual lawn chair sprawled out, each other’s legs tangled with one another. nobody was sat in front of the tv this time as the weather hummed in the background. kelso was in the corner giggling his ass off at god knows what, about to fall off his seat while eric was sat with donna, the two pressed against each other on the couch. eric seemed to be singing along to floyd in the background while donna lit the bowl for him. your smile stayed on your face as you listened to the music, day dreaming for only a moment-
you almost jumped out of your skin when steven squeezed your hip, nodding his head towards eric who was attempting to pass the piece to you.
you grabbed the bowl and lighter from him in a rush, accidentally dropping the lighter on the floor. as you reached to grab it you slipped, almost sliding off of stevens lap. your eyes widened as you went to protect the glass piece, hoping you wouldn’t spill ashes and glass everywhere on kitty’s clean floor. you doubt she would notice if you cleaned it, but you’d still feel bad mussing it up.
steven grabbed you before you could fall, pulling you closer up against his chest while trying to steady you. “easy” he murmured in your ear, your face turning red.
“i’m sorry- i’m like really high right now and super clumsy” you stuttered in his lap, suddenly embarrassed. you almost always dropped or spilled something when you were high, your limbs just got too heavy to manage. same with your voice—it felt like your tongue would get in the way when you spoke, syllables becoming one as letters were dropped or mangled.
he shook his head with a smirk and got the lighter off the floor while plucking the bowl out of your hands and holding it, motioning for you to move your head down.
“i’ll light it for you” he explained, flicking the lighter. you leaned down slightly and looked at him through your lashes, inhaling when you heard the tell-tale flick. you winced at the bright light of the flame burned your eyes before they adjusted, the smell of butane covering your senses. your eyes closed as you felt the hot smoke curl around your throat, pulling away when steven uncovered the carb.
you exhaled away from stevens face, watching him as he lit the bowl for himself. you swayed slightly to the guitar solo in the background, the music seeming to be wrapping around you as you enjoyed your high.
steven joined you, shifting closer to you before he inhaled, now making eye contact with you. his eyes twinkled in the dim light you noticed, brighter than any of the stones on your rings had. just the fact that you could even see him without the classic tinted shades was a treat.
you carded your fingers through his hair as he pulled away, inhaling any smoke that tried to escape from his lips.
he paused before grabbing for your face softly, his lips tight against yours for a second before he opened his mouth. you got the hint and did the same, inhaling the smoke that was in his mouth.
you blew the smoke out as you pulled away, he was already passing it back unto kelso.
kelso waved the bowl away laughing.
“i’m good, i’m about to leave and don’t want red or someone to smell me.” he laughed, passing it to donna who shrugged and took it. kelso fidgeted in his chair before you turned to him, confused.
“where are you going?” you asked slowly, more focused on the records playing in the background than the conversation. the smile on kelso’s face only grew as he looked around the room.
“your mom’s room!” he yelled, pointing at eric before yelling his signature “burn!”
donna smacked him since eric was busy with the pipe, you and hyde both threw matches and cards at him.
he gasped before ducking behind his chair. “truce! that was my eye!” he whined as steven managed to get a bottle cap past his barricade.
steven threw a final card before he motioned you to get up, wiping his hands on his pants.
“i’m gonna hit the bathroom and then we should get something to eat, i’m starving” he announced, directing the statement at the group but only looking at you. you were terrible at paying attention when you were baked, steven learned the hard way after you not listening one too many times.
you nodded as you plopped down on the chair where he was before, finishing off the bowl.
eric and donna whispered to each other before agreeing to going too, kelso just wanted to go for the ride.
“then it’s settled” he yawned before patting your head, trekking up the basement stairs.
“i’m gonna follow him—i’ll tell my mom we’re leaving” eric yawned, leaving donna on the couch while kelso played with the tv knobs.
donna and you both caught each other’s eyes as he stomped up the stairs; donna got up and started to clean up, dumping the ashes and spraying fabreeze while you lit some incense.
you stretched as you got off the lawn chair, groaning as your muscles tensed. you snagged a water off the table, chugging it as quickly as you could (you had some major cotton mouth). you shook your head as you got your bearings, time seeming to be moving slower every second. you shivered and looked around before going to stevens room and snatching his jacket off his cot bed.
his room is one of your favorite places, besides your bed and the hub. his room was small and always messy—almost the exact opposite of your room. he tried to fit everything he found into the closet sized area, and it showed. just on his bed alone besides his signature jacket lie a video camera, a couple rolls of film, two vinyl records and one of your shirts you left on his floor from the last time you came over. it was endearing, but annoying when you were looking for something specific.
you zipped up the familiar smell around you of cheap cologne, weed, and mint before grabbing your wallet off his dresser and heading back into the main room, steven and eric already back from the bathroom.
“where we going and who’s driving?” you asked, leaning on steven. everybody seemed to speak at once, ideas coming from every direction.
“we could go to the hub?” donna suggested, but hyde shook his head.
“too far away”
eric looked up, tilting his head “what about that new chicken place?”
“i don’t have that type of money” you snorted, looking up at hyde.
“i really want some ice cream” kelso sighed, messing with some random crap that was on the table.
“i could go for a burger” you responded, snapping your fingers. “what about fatso burger?”
“that could work, it’s like 2 miles away and closes at 11” donna provided, looking at kelso while he pouted “and they have milk shakes”
you thought he murmured a complaint and was proven right when donna smacked him upside his head. he gasped, clutching his head before backing away.
everyone shuffled around the room, getting their coats and shoes on as eric looked for his keys. after none of you could find the keys after looking for ten minutes, you guys decided that nobody should be driving, so you all slipped out the basement door as eric locked it behind himself.
the night was cool as the five of you walked down the street, singing along to the songs you guys had heard on the radio earlier. you bobbed your head as eric played the air guitar and kelso attempted to dance. steven ended up lighting a joint he found in his pocket on the way, passing it back and forth with donna as they walked behind the rest of you.
while you and steven have been going steady for a couple months now, her and eric were just now getting into their relationship, god knows where jackie and kelso are in theirs. you could hear their conversation, hyde giving donna advice for eric, their voices a low hum in the back of your thoughts.
you looked at the night sky, the chilly winter air whipping your hair in your face. thank god it wasn’t snowing this week, you needed a break from the cold. you didn’t get to spend as much time as usual when the winter storm would hit and honestly- it sucked. you hardly got the chance anymore to look at the night sky like you used to, talking to the moon as you counted the stars in the sky. you didn’t get too far along before a lit joint obstructed your view, hyde silently asking if you wanted to hit it.
you stared at the view for a moment, entranced by the red glow of the cherry and the white glow of the moon. you plucked the joint out of his hand, taking a deep drag. you loved and lived joints, it was your favorite way to smoke. you knew hyde was thinking this as you slowly inhaled, your eyes slightly lowering as your cheeks hollowed.
you blew a smoke ring into the still night air before blowing the rest in his face, smirking.
hyde began to open his mouth to respond before he got cut off by kelso, who yelled loud enough to let everybody in point place know they finally made it to fatso burger.

Pairings: Kitty and Hyde (family)
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/38052580
Author's Note: Hoping this story aged well. Was a hit on ffnet years ago and still get the occasional alert about it being added to someone's favorite. If you've read it before over there, I've had a few people tell me this about other older stories, don't be afraid to give it another read and maybe this time leave a comment and/or kudos on AO3. Eric forman's basement
You were sitting watching TV with your legs over Hyde's that were on the table, while Fez and Eric played some card game. It was a cute little flirtatious thing you and Hyde did: pretending that the other one was taking the space on the table, shoving at each other's legs, which then always ended up with you laying your legs over his letting him "win".
After about 20 minutes Jackie walked in: "Hey y/n, ready to go dress shopping for the wedding?"
"Ugh. I think I'm just going to wear a really nice jumpsuit or something, I hate dresses." You said taking your legs off of Hydes.
"Why do you hate wearing dresses, y/n?" Fez asked.
You: "because I gained some weight and I'm not skinny like everyone else so it's not going to look good, they never do."
"What are you talking about?? You're gorgeous. You have curves, every man's weakness. I love your body."
"I know you meant that in a non creepy way, so thank you fez." You gave Fez a kiss on the cheek, making Hyde shift uncomfortably in his seat.
"See you guys later."
The rest of the gang caught up with you guys at the mall 2 hours later to buy some tuxedos and more flowers.
Hyde: "Hey where's y/n and Fez?"
Jackie: "well y/n was crying in the changing area again, so Fez was helping her calm down. I couldn't take it anymore, she was ruining the good mood for trying on clothes."
Hyde walked into the changing area and saw fez holding your hands, you spoke up: "Thanks fezzie, you really know how to make me feel better." you hugged him and it seemed more intimate than usual, so Hyde took off. Generally you would always flirt or cuddle with Fez when he did it first but something about it lately just doesn't sit well with Hyde.
In the circle
Tumblr media
"Jealous? Nah man. don't be ridiculous forman. I just think Fez might like her now, he's starting to make the real moves."
"Maybe because you took so long to make a move dude. She deserves someone who can finally make a move. Oo or bust a move, which Fez can also do. I vote for Fez." Donna says getting super excited.
"I wanna say Burn but I just don't wanna rub it in more man you seem pretty upset. Just kidding! DOUBLE BURN!"
"Whatever you guys, it's no big deal okay.….. so I found out there's this car that runs on water man-"
Eric, Donna, Kelso: "shut up with that story."
Eric's living room
8:00pm
You walked into the living room only to see Hyde watching TV alone. "Hey Hyde, whats up?"
"Nothing much man. What's up with you?"
"Just got back from meeting a friend at the hub."
"Surprised Fez wasn't with you." He whispered.
"What ??"
"Oh nothing I'm just tired I'm gonna head to bed."
"Really at this hour?"
"Yeah all that shopping wore me out."
"Oh… okay good night then."
"Night."
You turned to the TV but you couldn't really focus since you knew Hyde was acting different. Was he mad at you? So you went over to Donna's. "Plus nothing good is on" You said to yourself.
~~
"I just don't know why he's being like this, I mean who sleeps at 8:00pm??"
She just made a weird face and shrugged.
"Why did you make that face? Oh my god you know something! Tell meee."
"no I don't!"
"Donna! This is serious."
"fine okay look, Eric told me that Hyde is jealous because of how you and Fez have been lately and it makes sense to me."
"Hyde doesn't get jealous. Plus Fez and I haven't done anything, it was just a kiss on the cheek earlier pretty normal stuff."
"Yeah but it was also in the changing area. You two were holding hands and Hyde saw."
"but it was just because I was -"
"Crying yeah and you didn't go to Hyde like you normally do."
"Oh… wow you're right. I didn't think he would care though. Hyde doesn't know what to do when a girl is crying."
"Maybe but just go and talk to him about it, make him feel special again, so he can act like normal." You both giggled but you quickly stopped.
"I can't."
"Why not??" You raised your eyebrows, making a face in a 'do you even need to ask?' kind of way.
Gasping she says: "Because you like him. I knew it!!!"
"Of course I do Donna, have you seen him? I can't talk to him about why I was crying. That'll make me look stupid and weak."
"I don't think Hyde will see you in those ways. He's always made you feel better when you were down. It'll be fine."
"Thanks Donna, you're the best. I'll talk to him tomorrow! So how's Eric doing with the whole no more sex thing??"
"Well you know he still tries all the time to make me say yes."
"Like he said before everything gets him horny. He'll be fine." You both laughed.
~~~
NEXT AFTERNOON
12:00 pm, Eric's kitchen
Hyde was putting his plate in the sink, Kelso was at the fridge, and you and Fez were sitting at the table; Eric & Donna just left the room with Jackie, to talk about more wedding stuff.
You: "hey fez I was wondering if you wanted to go see a movie tonight?"
"Really with you? Yes of course."
"Great!" You watched hyde the whole time.
"Hyde do you wanna come along tonight?"
"No i'm, um working."
"We can wait till tomorrow."
"I work late then too." You narrowed your eyes as he speaks kinda coldly. After that Hyde left the room, so you followed him out.
"What's wrong jealous?''
''Are you kidding me jealous? Ha no way."
"Well then why the cold shoulder?"
"I've just been busy."
"Mm busy, yeah busy giving me the cold shoulder!"
"Well I don't exactly see you spending time with me either. Lately all it's been is fez and you."
"Yeah I guess I didnt notice that till Donna said something, I'm sorry Steven, that'll change I promise."
"Its cool. Now I get to do this." He leaned in and kissed you. No tongue just a genuine kiss, that lasted about 10 seconds before you guys pulled apart.
"Wowwww that was -." You started.
"Amazing yeah."
"How about we go and see that movie tonight?" You bit your lip.
"Cant I do work late tonight, but tomorrow I'm free."
"So you were jealous huh??" You asked a little too happy.
He smiled playfully, "I dont do jealous."
"No of course not Steven." You smiled back, while he put his arm around your waist, walking you towards his room so you could talk while he got ready for work.
18 and Life
AN: Any and all mistakes are mine because as of this moment I do NOT have a beta reader. I tried to double check the best that I could, so hopefully there aren’t too many I missed. If so let me know!
Warnings: Swearing, drug use, drinking, abuse, I’ll add as they come up
Point Place, Wisconsin- 1968
 From his position on the bank of the dirty creek, the young boy watched the new family moving into the trailer that looked down on it. He never saw a man, just a young mother and a small child that happily carried any box she was handed in. They carried on a quiet conversation he couldn’t hear nor cared to know. It wasn’t until the mom spotted him and paused that Steven stood up almost nervously.
The little girl noticed her mom pause, and, clutching a small stuffed puppy to her chest, peeked around her legs and grinned brightly. She looked up, speaking while pointing towards him almost jumping up and down. Her mom laughed and nodded, the little girl making a rapid sprint towards him. Balking, Steven toyed with the idea of just turning around and making a break for it up the break, but before he could take more than a step back, she had reached him.
“Hi! I’m Aimee!” She offered him a big popsicle grin, clutching the puppy tighter to her chest.
“Um, I…”
She tilted her head, pigtails swaying in the breeze. “Do you want to play with me?”
“Sure?” It came out as more of a question, Steven not normally approached by other kids.
“Good! Do you live around here?” She was a curious little thing, edging closer.
“Yeah, couple houses down.”
“So, what’s your name?”
 Before the dream could go any further, Hyde was jolted awake to the sounds of life in the kitchen above; Mrs. Forman moving around making breakfast, Eric talking with her, and Red settling in to read the paper.  Laying perfectly still, he thought about the day he had dreamed of. That had been one of the best days of his young life, one of rare ones at any rate. From that day on, he and Aimee had become almost completely inseparable, the five-year old tailing him wherever he went like some kind of shadow. Not that Hyde minded much, she was one of the easiest people he could, and would, willingly open up and talk to even then. As they grew older, the more they knew everything about each other; even the worst parts and parts that they would rather have hid from anyone. Now, ten years later the two had been through hell and back, always doing all they could for each other.
Rolling over onto his back, the teenage let out a deep sigh as he heard footsteps on the stairs coming down to his room. “Hyde? Mom said to get you up dude, breakfast is ready.” Eric poked his head in as he spoke.
“I’ll be right up, now get out.” Tossing a pillow towards the other Hyde drug himself rather unwillingly out of bed. If he could have had his way, he wouldn’t have gotten up at all that morning after the long night he had had. All he had to do was get through breakfast and then he would be free to do as he pleased with the rest of the day, and one thing he knew was certain; as soon as the chance came up, he was going to take a nap.
Getting dressed, he wandered out into the main part of the basement to head up to the kitchen where the smell of bacon and eggs floated from. Pausing, he wandered over to the couch at a soft rustle before giving a disbelieving snort. “Aims?” She was sound asleep still; one arm curled under her head as a makeshift pillow with her knees drawn up to her chest forming a small ball on the broken-down cushions. Dirty blonde hair spilled across her face, blocking most of it from view as he studied her. Heavily debating on whether or not to wake her up, Hyde chose to let her sleep, after all she had been one of the many that had been at the party that was thrown.
Wandering back to his room, he snagged the blanket off of his cot before heading out to toss it over her. She buried herself deeper under it, a small sigh escaping as she did so. Shaking his head before he rolled his eyes, Hyde traipsed up the stairs to get himself something to eat, settling at the table while trying to tune out the chatter of his foster family. His head was slowly starting to pound, eyes burning in the overly bright light that filtered in through the sliding glass door. Trying to hide the fact he clearly was nursing a hangover, he forced down what he could of the food without seeming too obvious that he wasn’t very hungry or risk upsetting Mrs. Forman by rejecting her hard-cooked meal.
As the adults finished up and began leaving for work, Hyde rose and snagged a few leftover pieces of buttered toast to take down with him to the sleeping guest. He wanted to grab her something else as well but knew it would look to suspicious if he were to try and bring more down that the few things he had. Checking to be sure that Eric wasn’t following after him, the other teen instead opting to head across the yard to his girlfriend’s house, Hyde headed down the steps.
Reaching the couch, he sat down on the edge to pull a corner back to reveal the face hidden underneath. Aimee groaned, trying to bury back under it before he shook his head. “Come on brat, rise and shine. I have toast.”
One hazel eye opened to narrow dangerously at him before a pale hand poked out from under the blanket in a rather obscene gesture before she snatched the promised food from him. Her other hand grabbed the blanket to tug it back up and over her, but he kept a hold on it. “No way, if I have to face the day then so do you.” Pulling it back further earned a small groan and huff before she sat up, long hair wild around her face.
“Fine! But I’m not going to like it.” She snapped, taking a hard bite of her breakfast. “It’s your fault I even feel like death.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, I wasn’t the one telling you to drink as much as you did.”
“You’re such a bad liar some days Steven. If it wasn’t you, then it must have been your evil twin handing me drinks.” A small smile was tugging at the corner of her lips as she teased him, leaning her head on his shoulder.
“Must have been, I’m always the best influence possible to you.” A snort was the only response he got as she finished her breakfast.
“My head feels like it’s going to explode.”
“Lemme up, the Forman’s are out for now so I can get you some juice and aspirin.” He patted her leg gently. “I need some myself, anyway, just didn’t want to raise any eyebrows trying to bring it all down here to our sudden stow away.”
Aimee bit her lip, leaning back on the couch and wrapping the blanket back around herself. “You and I both know if I would have turned up like I was last night at home The Bastard would have beat me sound.”
Hyde’s fists clenched as the younger teen spoke of her stepfather; just once he wanted to be left alone with the man to show him how it really felt to have someone beat the shit out of him. But no matter how pissed off he got; Hyde knew Aimee wouldn’t let him get into any sort of fight even if it was for her sake. Grinding his teeth, he rose to get the promised medicine for the both of them.
“Steven? You’re not mad at me, are you?” Her quiet voice caught him unaware and he turned back around quickly.
“No! Aims, why on earth would I be mad at you of all people? You’re not the one beating someone half your age into a mess just because you can.” Venom laced his words, leaving his hands shaking with the need to bury themselves against something or someone. “Aimee, look at me; I will never be mad at you for something out of your control. The only reason I get so frustrated or annoyed at you is because I know that you just spoke up the Forman’s would more than likely help you. Either that or Donna, hell as much as I hate to say this, even Jackie may help you. You have plenty of people that care about you, if you would just let them help.”
She dropped her gaze, fiddling with the corner of the blanket wrapped around her. “I don’t want to be in the way for anyone, besides he doesn’t do it all the time, just if he…”
“If he what Aimee? Is bored? Drinks? Why the hell do you have to lie to yourself like that?” Hyde shook his head. “Forget it, we have been over and through this so many times Aimee I know it all by heart. I’ll be right back.” Walking out, a steadying breath was taken before he made the short trip to a medicine cabinet. It wasn’t like he really wanted to get mad at her, or say the things that he had said but she was so stubborn! She drove him completely insane some days with her bullheaded streak of trying to keep out of the way even when she had been told more than once she was never in the way.
Tucking a small bottle of pills in his pocket to keep on hand for later uses, two glasses of orange juice were poured to be carried back down the steps carefully. Reaching the bottom, Hyde knew their conversation was going to have to be put on hold as a familiar dark head turned to smile at him. “Good morning Steven!” God, how could Jackie be so perky that early in the morning?
“Aren’t there laws against being all bright eyed and bushy tailed this soon?” He groused, passing one of the glasses over to Aimee. Digging in his pocket for the bottle, he shook a few out before placing them in the offered palm as she nodded her thanks.
“I, unlike you two, knew when to quit.” Jackie countered, taking a more comfortable seat on the couch next to Aimee, leaving Hyde to take his normal seat on the chair beside them. “I came to see how Aimee was feeling and if she was up to a trip to the mall.”
“Do I really have to?” The younger girl moaned, head falling back to stare up at the ceiling.
“Oh come on, you’ll have fun! You can tell me how pretty I look in any outfit that I try on!”
Aimee couldn’t help a small laugh as she shook her head. “I don’t think I can really handle a lot of walking right now, maybe this afternoon? I can meet you there if Steven will give me a ride?” She peeked at him from the corner of her eye as she spoke to be sure he was up for it. A small, almost unnoticeable nod was given to her words.
“I guess, but you have to go to every shoe store with me now instead of just three!” Grinning, Jackie rose and made her way to the door. “I’ll call you this afternoon with a time for him to drop you off.” With that she disappeared out into the warm air.
Groaning, one arm rose to lay across tightly closed eyes. “Please just run me over dude, I don’t think I will survive more than two stores with her today of all days.” The weak plead made him chuckle.
“Not a chance Aims, you know you could have said no if you didn’t really want to spend time with her.”
“She really isn’t that bad after a while, but after what you caused me to feel like today I really would just rather be ran over than shop.”
“I would hit you with the El Camino, but that may hurt my baby, so I’ll have to pass on that.”
Aimee laughed once again, forcing herself to stand up to wander over to the record player. “Are you okay with music? Or are you going to watch TV?”
“Thought you were going to go back to sleep?”
“I am, but I’d rather not have total dead silence if I can help it. So, music or TV?”
“Pick a record, there’s never anything good on at this time anyway.” Climbing to his feet, the taller of the two walked over to rest his head on her shoulder and offer the girl a hug. “Next time I’ll try to cut you off a little sooner. Maybe.”
She shook her head with a small laugh before starting an Eagles record. “The day you don’t peer pressure someone into drinking past their limit is the day you’re passed out yourself Steven Hyde.” Chastising him gently, she returned the hug before stepping back. “Do you have another blanket? If you plan on crashing again, I can’t very well use the only one you have.”
He waved the words away. “Just come crash in my room, wouldn’t be the first time you’ve done it.” Grabbing the blanket from the couch, he held it up teasingly. “Or you can stay out here and just be all alone.”
“You’re an ass.” Trailing after him like a puppy, Aimee flopped down on the cot next to him. “Are you sure the Forman’s won’t come home and totally flip their lids seeing me in here with you?”
“See us doing what? Sleeping? God Aims, you really worry too much for someone so young.”
“Fifteen isn’t that young thank you very little. Jackie just turned sixteen a few weeks ago so there for a while I wasn’t the only one this age.”
“Still such a little kid to the rest of us adults.” A light, playful slap was delivered to his chest as she settled in.
“Whatever. You and I both know that not one of the guys see me as a kid and you know it.”
“You’re right, they see you as a brat.” Smirking, he tucked his sunglasses on the dresser top beside his cot before wrapping strong arms around her. “Now shhh no more talking or I’ll call you Little Jackie.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me.”
Calming down from the light banter, the two slowly began to doze off. Aimee fell asleep first, rolling to pillow her head on his chest. It wasn’t the first time the two had crashed together, but nothing ever came from it when she did sleep in his bed. Normally, she was in there for far worse reasons; The Bastard had tried something, had locked her out of her own home, and nightmares that woke her up in terror were the normal reasons he would wake up to her crawling into his bed at night. Hyde ground his teeth as one hand absentmindedly stroked the soft locks under it as he made up his mind. Aimee wouldn’t tell a soul about how bad her home life was, but he damn sure would. The older she got, and the more she grew up into a true woman the more dangerous it was to be home alone with the pitiful excuse for a man her mom had married three years earlier. Heaving a deep sigh, the older teen forced himself to calm down, relax and try to get the nap he knew that he desperately needed after only managing a meager four hours the night before.
There was no point in trying to get her to budge herself, Hyde knew that he was going to have to take action himself later once the opportunity arose. She would more than likely get pissed at him, but he really didn’t care anymore at that point if she did or not; someone had to do something and he knew he was the only one.
For those of you on here who are possibly subscribed to A Second Chance on AO3, I’m sorry for the stupidly long wait. There is a reason for this, which will be explained in the author’s notes. I’m hoping to have it uploaded sometime soon this week. Thank you for your kindness and patience!
What inspires or motivates you to keep writing T70s fanfiction after so many years?
Love your work! <3
First, thank you so much! ❤️
The T7S characters have complexities the show's writers created but didn't take advantage of in the later seasons. I find a lot emotional ground left to explore in them as well as imagine interesting plots (of all kinds) to bring out their complexities.
They each have different personalities and life circumstances / experiences. That richness provides tons of creative material to play with.
Whether I'm writing a story about Jackie's kleptomania phase and how that affects other aspects of her life, Fez and Kelso learning how to be heroes, Eric wanting to be scared on Halloween again, Hyde becoming stuck living same day repeatedly to figure out how truly to live in the present, or Donna coping with learning most of her life might be a lie (what's that I say?), I'm enjoying myself immensely, discovering new aspects about myself as I delve into the characters' psyches, and hoping to give readers an escape from reality and / or a deeper understanding of and empathy for themselves.
