Arvo Pärt :Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten ( Tallinn Chamber Orchestra ).
Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten by Arvo Pärt is a deeply moving work that combines a simple structure with overwhelming emotional depth. Composed in 1977 as a tribute to the British composer Benjamin Britten after his death, this piece reflects Pärt's characteristic spiritual minimalism and his tintinnabuli style, evoking the purity and resonance of bells.
The piece begins with a silence full of meaning, setting an introspective and solemn tone. It then develops into a descending canon in the strings, accompanied by the persistent sound of a bell. Each repetition of the bell creates a ritualistic effect, symbolizing the relentless passage of time and the inevitability of death. The use of the A minor scale amplifies the sense of mourning and reflection, while the strings, divided into various registers, create an enveloping texture that combines simplicity with depth. The harmonic progression advances with deliberate slowness, allowing each note to resonate deeply, immersing the listener in an atmosphere of contemplation and transcendence.
The conclusion of the piece reaches an emotional climax that is not dramatic but profoundly reflective. The strings continue their descent into the lowest registers, generating a dense and rich harmonic texture that remains faithful to the work's simplicity. The bell, constant throughout the composition, persists until the very last moment, slowly dissolving into an echo that seems to linger in the air, suggesting transcendence and the permanence of memory.
The tempo gradually slows, as if time itself is fading. The strings reach their lowest point and dissolve into complete silence, leaving a sense of peace, stillness, and profound reflection. This minimalist ending does not seek to impress with an obvious climax but rather offers a subtle and introspective closure that invites the listener to meditate on loss, eternity, and reconciliation with grief.
The combination of tonal dissolution and final silence encapsulates the essence of the work: a tribute to life and death that transcends sound to resonate deeply within the soul, lingering long after the music has ended.

25 Comments "He wrote this during a period of two years in silence. I have listened to Avro's composition during my times of weeks of silence and his music leaves an imprint on my heart. Going into silence is such pleasure and after several weeks of living in silence leaving this is like emerging from a deep well and so difficult that I weep."

EPL, TE AJATE MUL SÜDAME PAHAKS
Eesti Päevaleht (EPL) avaldas täna, 04. augusti 2023. a. hommikul Triinu Tähe artikli

Arvo Pärt: Für Lennart In Memoriam (In Principio 2009)
Für Lennart in memoriam is a composition for string orchestra written by Arvo Pärt in 2006, at the request of former Estonian President Lennart Meri, who wished for Pärt's music to be performed at his funeral.
The piece premiered on March 26, 2006, at St. Charles Church in Tallinn, performed by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste, during Meri's funeral ceremonies.
Musically, the work reflects Pärt's characteristic style, known as "tintinnabuli," distinguished by its simplicity and spiritual depth. The composition, approximately seven minutes in length, evokes a solemn and contemplative atmosphere, perfectly suited to the occasion for which it was conceived. The relationship between Pärt and Meri dates back to their youth when both worked at Estonian Radio in the 1960s—Pärt in the music department and Meri in radio theater.
This personal connection adds a layer of emotional depth to the piece, which has been praised for its beauty and its ability to convey feelings of mourning and reflection. For those who wish to experience this composition, it is available on the album In Principio, performed by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra under Tõnu Kaljuste’s baton.
"Für Lennart in Memoriam," composed by Arvo Pärt, is a work that captures the essence of the composer’s tintinnabuli style, characterized by structural simplicity that conceals profound emotional depth. The piece, written for string orchestra, lasts approximately seven minutes. Although seemingly simple, its structure is meticulously crafted to evoke solemnity, introspection, and a sense of transcendence—elements well-suited to its funeral context.
The composition begins with a homogeneous texture and a calm character, where the lower strings establish a solemn and meditative tone. This introduction creates an atmosphere of gravity and reflection, with long notes that resonate in a wide sonic space, allowing each chord to breathe and settle in the listener. The harmonic construction follows a minimalist scheme, with melodic lines that emerge and fade gradually, reflecting the influence of Gregorian chant on Pärt's musical language.
As the piece progresses, the higher strings engage in a dialogue with the lower voices, creating a contrast between depth and clarity. This interplay develops into an emotional crescendo that never becomes dramatic but hints at a spiritual climax. The tension is built through the layering of simple melodic patterns and the use of carefully controlled dynamics, adding a level of restrained but deeply moving expressiveness.
The work concludes with a descent into silence, returning to the initial stillness and leaving the listener in a state of reflection. This circular resolution reinforces the idea of eternity and farewell—central themes in Pärt's music and particularly in this composition, dedicated to Lennart Meri.

I could compare my music to #whitelight which contains all #colours. Only a prism can divide the colours and make them appear; this prism could be the #spirit of the listener.” – #ArvoPärt That Pärt Feeling - Het #Pärt gevoel (2019) Arvo Pärt, the most celebrated living composer of our time, is considered to be something of a recluse. However, at work he appears to be the total opposite, combining an incredible #sensitivity with #humour and #energy. His intense collaboration with the Cello Octet Amsterdam forms the heart of this documentary which sheds a bright light on Pärt’s universe. A universe not only inhabited by classical musicians like Tõnu Kaljuste, Candida Thompson or Daniel Reuss, but also by choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, filmmakers including Alain Gomis and young techno musicians like Kara-Lis Coverdale. Elbphilharmonie LIVE | Reflektor Manfred Eicher: Arvo Pärt Portrait-Konzert
