Women of the Illuminae Files

Finally finished Obsidio. Had so much fun reading these, but what stuck out a mile was the number of incredible female characters in the trilogy.

Kady Grant: pink-haired, resolute, determined computer-hacker, thinks of the big picture, never herself. 

Hanna Donnelly: prom queen turned tactical genius and martial artist for whom unlikely odds are merely a challenge.

Asha Grant: compassionate pharmacist atoning for past mistakes

Syra Boll: reluctant captain, steering a hotch-potch crew of refugees as best she can.

Fred McCall: former marine, former head of security, likewise reluctant captain, maker of difficult decisions. Team-player.

Katya Kowalska: the cleverest mouse; resourceful survivor.

Yukiko Oshiro: formerly hardline BeiTech pounder - has a conscience.

and

Ella Malikova: Pauchok, the little spider, bearer of losses, and partially-paralysed computer genius with brains and a personality fifty times the size of the average human. Wheelchair user; saver of worlds.

The first character you loved:

Kat Grant- she goes through SO MUCH, but she still kicks ass and saves an entire planet by herself (okay, yes, AIDAN was there too, but you get the point)

Emma Swan- I MISS HER. I don’t know why people, unfairly, hate her and say she lost her badassery after season 1. Because she decided to fall in love? Because she decided to let herself be happy with her son and family that she searched for forever? And she did all of this while carrying the weight of being the Savior? HOW DARE SHE. 

Kaz Brekker- I love Inej more, but Kaz was the first character i loved because he’s such a butt sometimes. He tries to be Dark™️ and Brooding™️, but really he’s just a teenager in love with a girl who turns him into an idiot whenever she's around and that’s just amazing, tbh. 

The character you never expected to love so much:

Syra Boll- I didn’t realize how much she’d grown on me until THAT happened in Obsidio and I was feeling all the emotions at once.

Regina Mills- I absolutely despised her character all through season one and most of season 2, even when I do rewatches I get angry all over again. She became one of my favorites eventually though, once she realized her wrongs, and became closer with Snow. She has one of the best character developments ever, imo.

Colm Fahey- Jesper’s dad is the parent these kids deserve!!!

The character you relate to the most:

Ella Malikov- I’m not even half as smart as she is, but i’m probably just as sassy and sarcastic.

Emma Swan- The feeling of not really belonging anywhere is a feeling all too familiar with me. 

Wylan Van Eck- We are both incredibly awkward in the romance department.

Character you’d slap:

Travis Falk- Took too long to get what he deserved, tbh.

Peter Pan- The Worst™

Jan Van Eck- And the award for Worst Dad of the Century goes to...

Character you liked at first, but don’t like anymore:

Byron Zhang- I knew it was coming, but that doesn’t mean I liked it one bit.

Rumplestiltskin- He was such a good villain for the first few seasons, but even when they had a new Big Bad, they kept using him as a scapegoat and it just felt like a tired plot. And the back and forth between him and Belle was just exhausting. 

It’s pretty clear who the good and bad guys are in this book, so it was easy to know who to like.

The characters you didn’t like at first, but do now:

AIDAN- How dare this series get me to care about a morally grey artificial intelligence system.

Zelena- I actually enjoyed her character the entire time, but she really frustrated me at first. I’ve made my peace with it, though.

Kuwei Yui-Bo- Okay, yes, i’m one of those people who didn’t like him simply because he came between Wylan and Jesper, but I've since learned the error of my ways.

In the middle, when the situation with Nik happened and Syra Boll was explaining the gemina particle, I literally stopped reading to write down what I thought was going on and I turned out to be right 😂 I still enjoyed it a bunch, especially the last third of the book. That's definitely when I started liking Hanna's character 100x more too. 😌 March 2018 hurry up!!! I. NEED. TO. KNOW. IF. MY. SPACE. BBYS. ARE. OKAAAAAY. 😣
