【Turkey is the ultimate friend】 On February 6, a major earthquake hit southeastern Turkey. News reports have confirmed that more than 7,000 people were killed. First of all, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victims of the earthquake. History has proven that both Japan and Turkey are the strongest of friends. This is still the case and will never change. In Turkey, there is a company called KV331 Audio (@kv331.audio ) that develops world-class synthesizers. While synthesizers are best known for products from Western countries, the company's Synth Master is original, powerful, and unmatched. I compose music by placing a large number of break beats in Renoise, and the synthesizers that produce sounds simultaneously here can only be used with a truly selective selection of synthesizers. Those few synthesizers are Synth Master. It has overwhelming power, a brilliant sound, and parameters that reproduce even biological swells. The more you use it, the more you glimpse its unfathomable performance and potential. Because of its performance, it became "Ace in the Hole" on the day I used it. And on a personal note, I just donated 20,000 yen to the Turkish Embassy in Japan. Turkey dispatched an emergency relief team to Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. They did their best to search for missing persons and provide relief in what was, by all accounts, a dangerous situation. Since I am a medical professional, I should head to Turkey right now and take charge of relief with my medical skills... But there are great limitations on what I can do in my current position. That said, I cannot abandon my friends here. If that is the case, I decided to at least do what I can do now. The damage caused by the earthquake is truly deep-rooted, and immediate support is essential. We will continue to donate as much as we can while donations are still being accepted. We wish for the earliest possible recovery of Turkey. Audiovision Blog Post week 2
Research (technical, academic, creative practice)
This week i have been exploring various inspirations around AV 2.1. Regarding my selected video I have been exploring the sound design within the film 'Anhiliation'. I love the texture and variety that the composers of the film 'Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury' implemented within this scene. The raw emotion and tension that is built through the minimal use of synths and layered bassline sounds are highly effective in reflecting the importance of the scene.
Sound design study using reference from '1:30 - 2:50'
youtube
The disonance of the ambient white noise creates a sense of desolation pairted with the saw drilling synths that send a chill down your spine as the alien transforms into this expansive matter.
I am already pretty familiar with how these sounds can be recreated and reinterpreted in Ableton, so I aim to have this as a base to build my sound design upon.
Following this I have been exploring similar compositions within Ableton using plugins 'Vital' and 'Synthmaster' as well as a variety of distortion, phaser/flanger effects in order to replicate the sounds within the film. Vital is a great free synth instrument similar to 'Serum' allowing for vast customisation and modulation.
2. Reflection
I was absent from class during this week due to sickness so I am not able to reciprocate the learnings in class. However, regarding week 1's learning and class content I was quite fascinated by the various possibilities of foley within sound design. I especially liked the 'nightmare machine' device that is able to create a multitude of horrific and discordant sounds it can create with such simple elements. This has really inspired my own sound creation and the possibilities that I want to explore within my own sound design in the future.
Also the contextualisation of emotion and mood within a scene was never an aspect of sound production that I really took into account enough. The exercise rewatching the same clip with different soundtracks really made me think about the possibilities of how I can warp and push a videos narrative through opposing or contrasting visual elements whist still making sense contextually.
3. Progress
I have been emailed by one of the animation students and have started discussing various ideas regarding their project and how my sound design could work well with their concept. They are planning on creating an animation based around the Hong Kong coffin housing which is a great fit for me as I have already made my own animation and sound design based around a similar concept (Kowloon walled city) in a previous dms class.
I am also currently I am working on my AV 2.1 assignment and exploring various tutorials and reference material to build a foundation of how I want my sound to fit within the video. I selected Resonance - Murat Pak as I found it to be the most interesting to me as well as offer a wide variety of sound creativity.

Col Lawton & Scottie Soul - Tears Run Free feat. Becka (Pelvic Movements)
8DPromo · Col Lawton & Scottie Soul - Tears Run Free feat. Becka (Pelvic Movements)
In the ever-evolving cosmos of house music, a new star emerges from the depths of Pelvic Movements' creative universe. "Tears Run Free," the label's third release, is a collaboration of celestial proportions, featuring the UK's Col Lawton, Scottie Soul, and the enchanting vocals of Becka. This musical odyssey is a tapestry of emotion and rhythm, where each track is a vignette of heartache and euphoria, artfully woven into a narrative that resonates with the soul of its listeners. At the heart of this release is the titular track, "Tears Run Free," a fusion of chunky house rhythms and a funky bassline that pulsates with life. Becka's vocals, imbued with a haunting depth, glide over the vibrant soundscape of electric piano chords, sparkling pianos, and sultry saxophone lines. The track is a dance between melancholy and hope, a mirror reflecting the duality of human emotion. Next to the original and starting this package off is Alex Hernandez's Synthmaster Mix. This funk-infused nu-disco rendition takes one on a time-traveling journey back to the '80s, then catapulting into the future with its modern house sensibilities. The No Clothes Mix strips down to the essentials, offering a deep house variant that exudes sophistication and a club-ready sheen. Completing the journey, the Original Instrumental version of "Tears Run Free" is a showcase of the rich layers of instrumentation, each element telling a story of its own. For those seeking a more intimate experience, Z-Sharp Minor's Look Down at the Stars Mix offers a soulful, downtempo vibe that's both smooth and romantic, perfect for late-night introspection or close encounters. "Tears Run Free" is a testament to the power of collaborative creativity in the realm of house music, making "Tears Run Free" a shining beacon in the Pelvic Movements catalog.
Quentin Harris (Strictly Rhythm) – “Loving the Original and No Clothes mixes.” Edground (Brazilian Soul Crew) – “Amazing release. Soulful and groovy.” Michael Fossati (Spirit of House webzine) – “Glamorous sun drenched vibes.” MGiK (Sofa Surfing) – “On air a must!” Black Mighty Wax (Gru Radio 93.3 FM) – “That kind of Vocal House I like.” Jon Manley (hOUSEwORX) – “This is simply stunning. A wonderful production, love it, love it, love it!”

KV331 Audio waves in intuitive wavetable synthesis era with SynthMaster One soft synth
KV331 Audio waves in intuitive wavetable synthesis era with SynthMaster One soft synth
Tumblr media
KV331 Audio is proud to announce availability of SynthMaster One — an easy-to-use wavetable soft synth with an intuitive workflow available in AU and VST formats for Mac OS X and Windows — as of February 27...
SynthMaster One shares the same sound engine as its award-winning big brother, SynthMaster, but boosts it with wavetable synthesis features. Fortunately for fans of wavetable synthesis, SynthMaster One’s simple layout, rich wavetable content, and inspiring factory presets from a world-class crack team of sound designers — including Arksun, Bülent Biyikoglu, Gerçek Dorman, Ufuk Kevser, Rob Lee, Vorpal Sound, Xenos Soundworks, and Aiyn Zahev — makes designing distinctive sounds simplicity itself.
In implementing true wavetable synthesis, SynthMaster One opens up new possibilities for sound design. Unlike SynthMaster, where only up to 16 waveforms can be sequenced to create a wavetable, SynthMaster One can read files that contain wavetables in them. SynthMaster One comes complete with a rich wavetable library that can be extended by placing wavetables in its Waveforms folder. Furthermore, each of its two oscillators feature 17 different algorithms controlled by TONE and PHASE parameters to shape the oscillator wavetable.
With its semi-modular architecture, there’s so much more to the easy-to-use SynthMaster One than might first meet the eye, however. For each instance of SynthMaster One, there are two oscillators (OSC 1 and OSC 2) each with sub- oscillators (SUB 1 and SUB 2), two filters (FILTER 1 and FILTER 2), four ADSR envelopes (MOD ENV 1, AMP ENV 1, AMP ENV 2, and MOD ENV 2), two LFOs (LFO 1 and LFO 2), a powerful 16-step arpeggiator/sequencer (each step of which has its own Velocity, Note Number, Note Length, Slide, and Hold parameters, as well as classic and more complex modes), and also 11 different effect types — Distortion, LoFi, Ensemble, Phaser, 6 Band EQ, Compressor, Vocoder, Delay, Chorus, Tremolo, and Reverb — that can be inserted into six different slots.
SynthMaster One’s oscillators have stereo outputs and are capable of up to 16 UNISON voices. By using the VOICES, VOICES MIX, DETUNE CURVE, DETUNE SPREAD, PAN SPREAD, TONE SPREAD, PHASE SPREAD, and WAVE INDEX SPREAD parameters, each oscillator can generate a rich ‘supersaw’ sound. Still deeper, each sub-oscillator can be connected to its associated oscillator in five different modes, meaning users can choose to use them as regular sub-oscillators or have them do complex modulations, such as ring modulation, amplitude modulation, phase modulation, or frequency modulation. The sub-oscillators can also synthesize different types of noise.
SynthMaster One offers four different categories for each of its filters — namely, ladder, diode ladder, state variable, and bite, and all filter algorithms are created using zero-delay feedback filter technology. The filters can sound very warm, with advanced filter parameters like INPUT GAIN, DRIVE, and ACID.
Aside from 12 preconfigured modulation matrix entries to make sound design even easier, new modulations can quickly be created by simply dragging a source or destination onto any knob on the user interface. Up to 24 modulation matrix entries can be created using 24 modulation sources and 234 destinations.
Whether revisiting the glory days of wavetable synthesis or taking it kicking and screaming into the future, SynthMaster One has what it takes to win many musical admirers — and even supports Scala tuning in doing so! Easy to use and easy on the pocket, why not wave in intuitive wavetable synthesis with a little help from your friends at KV331 Audio?
SynthMaster One is available in 64-bit AU and VST formats for online purchase directly from KV331 Audio for $79.00 USD from here: http://www.synthmaster.com/synthmasterone.aspx (Existing SynthMaster owners can crossgrade for $29.00 USD.)

It’s 2018 and there are literally hundreds & thousands *maybe*, of VST synth plugins in the market. Some are free, some are expensive and some cost very little.
Diva is a classic analogue synth takes the best bits of hardware history and puts them into one incredible-sounding plugin. It’s also the type of synth to reach for to make big rave music anthems. With Diva, you could pair a Minimoog oscillator with an MS-20 filter, and then pipe the signal through a Jupiter-6 style envelope, or swap out any. The easiest way to backup and share your files with everyone. TRAKTOR 3.3 has arrived, delivering incredible new performance and compatibility for DJs. The new version can now be used with TRAKTOR SCRATCH, giving you hands-on control of all four virtual decks via turntables and CD players.
Tumblr media
Not every VST synth is made equal. On some synths, you may find big and usable sounds, right on the get-go. And on some other synths, you could get sound that sounds too amateurish until you spend time tweaking and inserting effects into it.
We could have attempted to write a list of the top 100 best free & paid VST plugins in the world today, but I really wanted to focus on the real best 5 must-have software VST synths, that should consider installing in your setup – as a music producer, whether you produce electronic music or hip-hop music.
Let’s get started.
The 5 Best Software VST Synths To Install Today
Check out this video, where Tim Cant (a really hilarious producer) shows us insights into the five of probably the most popular software synths in the world today. He’ll explain the five synths below, shows a quick walkthrough of each and explains what made them popular.
1. SynthMaster 2.9 (KV331 Audio)
SynthMaster, an award-winning synth may have been around for a long time, but every update has kept it fresh for the competition with the world’s best soft synths.
Now at version 2.9, SynthMaster has practically every sound generation feature you could want in a synthesizer: wavetable oscillators, loads of voicing parameters, dual filters, multistage envelope generators and a modular signal flow – all times two with two synthesis layers. On top of that, there’s also four LFOs, an effects section including a Vocoder, and loads more.
Tumblr media
SynthMaster’s Killer Feature? It’s oscillator waveforms include samples of classic hardware to use as sources.
Its seen to be used by DJs like Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix and Zedd.
Buy SynthMaster at Plugin Boutique – $99
2. Spire (Reveal Sound)
The Spire does not come cheap. (Almost the price of a DAW!).
But it brings an impressive range of oscillators and synthesis types, and an even more impressive range of third-party preset developers. Spire is an extensive VST plugin as it allows for complicated modulation options while sounding extremely big.
Choose one of 49 waves in a Spire oscillator, and you can morph it using the CtrlA and CtrlB knobs. What these two do to the waveform is determined by the synthesis type, which is selected at the top of the oscillator. And that’s without mentioning the dual filters, the four LFOs, the four envelopes and effects.
Spire’s Killer Feature? It’s five-page modulation matrix, giving access to over 200 mod destinations. Reveal Sound, the maker of Spire also claims that the plugin is used by artists such as Dash Berlin and Hardwell.
A quick thing you should know about Spire is that it uses quite a bit of CPU processing and in our opinion, we think that could be improved – perhaps in its upcoming version updates.
Buy Spire at Plugin Boutique – $199
3. Avenger by Vengeance Sound
You probably have heard its sounds in lots of music pieces on the radio. This monstrous, top-of-the-line synth is the first instrument released by plugin and sound household legends, Vengeance Sound.
It has eight oscillators, which host classic analogue shapes, samples, a choice of digital wave cycles and wavetables. ThThere areM and AM options, and each oscillator can be run through a unique combination of filters, amps, arpeggiators and effects, meaning that you could make an entire track in one instance of Avenger.
Elsewhere, there’s a spectral filter, macro controls, and far too many features to even namecheck.
Avenger’s Killer Feature? It’s got an entire drum machine – and drum sequencer – built in! Put simply, Avenger is excessive and would fit the tweak-hungry music producer.
Buy Avenger at Plugin Boutique – $220
Mhc Industrial Tones Synth Vsti V1.5 Amplify 4
4. Diva (u-he)
Synths made by u-he (like Zebra synth), never fail to disappoint. Diva is a classic analogue synth takes the best bits of hardware history and puts them into one incredible-sounding plugin. It’s also the type of synth to reach for to make big rave music anthems.
With Diva, you could pair a Minimoog oscillator with an MS-20 filter, and then pipe the signal through a Jupiter-6 style envelope, or swap out any of the elements for any other. Diva’s also got two LFOs, two effects slots, a Modifications tab to make advanced tweaks, and a kickass oscilloscope visualiser.
Diva’s Killer Feature? Divine Mode – this menu control cranks Diva up to maximum quality, making it its most analogue, but with a hefty CPU hit. You could use it if you have enough CPU power under the hood of your computer.
U-he’s Diva is no stranger to the world of music production and has been around since late 2011.
Buy Diva at Plugin Boutique – $179
Mhc Industrial Tones Synth Vsti V1.5 Amplify 7
5. Serum (Xfer Records)
Mhc Industrial Tones Synth Vsti V1.5 Amplify Download
My personal favourite to the list of synths here. Serum is a modern looking wavetable VST synth, that has become a staple to many electronic music producers. Out of the box, the presets itself sounds super big and usable. You’ll enjoy using them in your tracks and will only look at tweaking them, to create your own unique sounds.
Serum’s two wavetable oscillators are actually superweapons, with 3D wave morphing, additive synthesis, wavetable interpolation, wave cycle morphing, and loads more complicated-sounding powers. But the trick is, in reality, every one of Serum’s features is completely straightforward to use, and there are countless third-party preset packs available that showcase its incredible potential.
Serum’s three Killer Features? It’s got up to eight multipoint LFOs, PNG Wavetable import, and everyone with Serum gets a copy of Serum FX, an effects-only version with only Serum’s FX tab.
Native Instrument’s Massive is something of an alternative to Serum, but having experienced them first-hand, I’ll be first to tell you that you’ll find it easier to program on Serum compared to Massive.
Buy Serum at Plugin Boutique – $189
What are your takes on the 5 VST soft synths that I featured here in this post? Let me know and contribute some of your thoughts to the other readers!
