Vroeg in de 17e eeuw stond Gouda al bekend als een vrij denkende gemeente. Dit trok vele gelovigen aan en ook ontstond er een Joodse gemeenschap. In de 18e eeuw werden de Joden tijdelijk het stadsburgerschap ontzegd, maar vanaf de Franse tijd bloeide de gemeenschap weer op dankzij de officiële vrijheid van godsdienst. In 1827 opende de grote synagoge aan de Turfmarkt. In 1940 maakten bijna 600 Joodse Gouwenaars deel van de gemeenschap. Na de vervolging door de Nazi’s keerden na de oorlog 35 leden terug uit de kampen en hun onderduikadressen. Tijdens de oorlog waren vele zaken uit de synagoge verdwenen of vernield. Samen met de kleine gemeenschap was kon de synagoge niet meer blijven bestaan. In 1950 werd deze dan ook noodgedwongen verkocht en werd het gebouw een kerk. Op de muur is een gedenkteken geplaatst voor de verdwenen, vermoordde, gemeenschap. ———— In Gouda there has always been a liberal way of thinking. From 1616 onwards this attracted many differents religions. Besides a short period early in the 18th century, also Jews were more welcome than in other European areas. In 1798 freedom of religion was made official and this resulted in the build of a synagoge at the Turfmarkt. In 1940 almost 600 Jews were part of the synagoge. After World War 2 only 35 returned from the Nazi persecution. Also the inside of the synagoge had been ransacked. This resulted in the synagoge having to be sold. It was turned into a church. Today we’ve visit Polná. Town with many beautiful places. One of these beautiful places is for sure jewish quarter with picturesque square, nice synagogue similiar to synagogue in Třebíč and house of rabbi (which you can visit) place was in History burned 4 times and destroyed and raped by nazis and commies but after velvet revolution was fixed. In this jewish museum is exhibition of “Hilsneriáda” - ugly part of czech history of antisemitism.
