WHAT?! I did not know that!! Wow!
Flowers sure have a mysterious and symbolic way of explaining things…it’s the only way they grow.
Flower Analysis in Sweeney Todd
So I’m writing about flower symbolism for a school assignment, and I was scrolling through tumblr when I saw a picture of Mrs.Lovett during the song Wait. So, because I’d rather write about this musical than do my work, I’m gonna analyze the few different flowers seen in Sweeney Todd.
The first and most obvious example is the line in Wait, “I’ve been thinking’ flowers, maybe daisies, to brighten up the room.” So daisies are sort of tricky to analyze. They can mean a lot of things in a lot of contexts. They often stand for purity and innocence, but can also be a symbol of playfulness or curiosity. So this can be interpreted as Mrs.Lovett’s attempt at flirting. Daisies can also symbolize a tenacity or delicacy, so this is sort of her way of testing the waters. By offering daisies, it’s essentially her saying “Hey, I’m interested in you, but I’m not quite sure how to approach you yet.”
Later in the same song, she sings “Gillyflowers maybe, ‘stead of daisies, I dunno though, what do you think?” Ok so it’s time for a little lesson on gillyflowers! Gillyflowers are thought to be one of the most common flowers. They were actually one of the first flowers to be bred for commercial production. In Victorian times, women were taught to scorn these flowers because they were too “ordinary.” Women back then expected the best new exotic thing. Strangely enough though, they’re some of the most pungent flowers and have a very noticeable perfume. So offering Gillyflowers can be seen as a surrender for Mrs.Lovett. She can’t afford anything too fancy for him, and deep down, she knows he doesn’t even care. By leaving some Gillyflowers, she would be leaving something completely ordinary with the most beautiful scent that he’d eventually be forced to notice them.
While these two flowers can be interpreted separately, I think there’s an even deeper meaning when putting them in context with one another. Daisies represent the past. They are pure and light and bring happiness. Daisies represent Johanna and Lucy and the life Benjamin Barker once had. Gillyflowers are ordinary. Mundane. Looked past. Mrs.Lovett is a gillyflower. She is poor and old and widowed, but she still manages to make a sweet perfume- her love. And so the line “Gillyflowers maybe, ‘stead of daisies” is really Mrs.Lovett offering herself to him even if she thinks she’s not good enough.
It’s also worth noting that Mrs.Lovett has light pink roses on her wallpaper in the parlour (I have some really shitty pics here):
Why is this important? Because Mrs.Lovett has the great line in the movie saying “The cheery wallpaper was a real bargain too. Only partly singed when the chapel burnt down.” This is such a hilarious and highly symbolic line, because pink roses usually stand for sweetness, joy, even admiration. But it’s burned now. Just like Nellie. Partly singed. Also there’s another layer in there because she got it from a burnt down chapel, which hints to her decline of faith in both the religious and humanistic sense.
So that’s it for now! Sorry for over-analyzing everything as usual, but I hope you enjoy!
