Oneshot Friend Profiles: The Barrens

All friend profiles are laid out as follows: Name/title at the top, arrows at the upper corners to switch friend profiles, a large block of text in the upper left (with a scroll wheel if the text's length exceeds the box size), sprites underneath the text, and art of the character along the right.

ProphetBot: ProphetBot is a nice and friendly robot that lives in the outskirts of the world, waiting for the messiah. One day the messiah showed up! That was a very good day for Prophetbot.

When the messiah is not around, ProphetBot likes to spend his time standing around waiting for the messiah to come back.

Silver: The Barren's head engineer, a rather morose robot living alone near the mines. It's her duty to oversee operations and maintenance of the world's industrial heart, where metals and resources are pulled from the earth's clutches and rendered into usable goods.

...at least, that's how it used to be. Since the evacuation, only a few active robots remain under Silver's care, holding out on reserve power and waiting for the messiah to appear.

Rowbot: A little robot attached to a rowboat, rusted in place by the ocean's mist. Once part of a fleet that transported passengers across the ocean between the Barrens and the Glen. That fleet has been largely disbanded since people fled the Barrens when the sun was extinguished. Only this bot remains, dutifully stationed in case there's ever need for one more trip to that distant shore.

I noticed my nephews tend to want to press the buttons on the webbed site (even if I'm holding my phone and have asked them not to since I have a LG Wing and its fragile) so I now make them functional. They used to refresh the page and I think it made them suspicious. The Press for Info button on this post takes you to a boring text heavy page of the ESRB website.

The text for the Coughing BABY reads:

The read more button on this article takes you to the parental guidance page of nintendo. I feel like this sells legitimacy while causing their young 8 year old eyes to gloss over the massive wall of text and not notice it's only somewhat related.

Guys I have a confession to make. In spite of all my PLA posting and especially Reiposting... I have not actually played PLA.

So far I have been having a blast catching 'mons, dodge-roll climbing my way up unreasonably tall places, and not doing the plot. I have been assured this is part of the experience.

I forgot to take a screenshot so I had to yoink this from someone's YouTube playthrough but darn. Kamado. Did you really have to say it like that

(Haha isn't it funny that Rei does do that and yet he's not fully accepted and trusted in the end. Haha. Maybe he didn't work hard enough...)

This line stuck out to me. On one hand it's cautionary - in context, it's meant to warn Rei that he should be careful in how he behaves around the Diamond and Pearl clans, since the Galaxy Team is in a tenuous position here in Hisui. But from another view, it sort of suggests that "we are all equally outsiders here. You belong" which is more explicitly stated in lines like this one:

And so I see this narrative that's building up of "Rei can earn a place for himself where he is trusted and accepted if he works hard enough", which is reinforced time and time again as he gets more star ranks, and takes more requests from the villagers, who gradually become friendlier towards him, at varying rates. (I've been making a point to talk to all the NPCs every time I return to Jubilife Village.)

Which I'm sure you all know already, and which I also knew, to a point, but it hits different actually seeing its gradual progression in game.

Anyway. Next episode, we fight a Noble Pokemon and I'll see if all my dodge-rolling experience to climb tall heights will translate to being good at dodge-rolling away from murderously angry super-powered Pokemon. Wish Rei luck, he's being piloted by me and my decidedly lacking gamer reflexes XDD
