Last night all my attention squinting westward at the sunset With a map and a compass when a man reached up, said something There against the sky a point of light Too invisible to give itself to the naked eye

ALBUM REVIEW: Dirty Projectors - Lamp Lit Prose
For an album with the opening line “The sky has darkened / earth turned to hell,” Dirty Projectors’ Lamp Lit Prose is surprisingly sunny. The newest effort from Dave Longstreth trades the blunt emotions of last year’s Dirty Projectors for hope, while retaining an amphibious balance of electronic and acoustic. Never one for stagnancy, Longstreth yet again reimagines Dirty Projectors’ sound.
Lamp Lit Prose features collaboration with plenty of other artists, including Syd, Empress Of, Amber Mark, Robin Pecknold (of Fleet Foxes), Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend), and Dear Nora. Singles “Break-Thru” and “That’s A Lifestyle” are slick and bright with sparkling riffs and fidgety, programmed sounds.
“I Feel Energy” leans towards pop, with sprightly horns and a simple chorus. The transition to happy songs after Dirty Projectors’ soul-crushing self-titled album is unexpected but refreshing, especially considering that the albums were released only 17 months apart.
Beginning with a sound reminiscent of a rickety starting car, “What Is The Time” features cozy brass, Longstreth’s falsetto, and beautiful harmonies. Dirty Projectors rarely presents a song that’s simple, though — an undercurrent of uncertainty rises above the surface every once in a while. Longstreth isn’t just singing about love, but about finding love in a world where hope is desperately lacking. “I Found It In U” is an ebullient cacophony of sounds — the classic Dirty Projectors hand claps, brash guitar, and crashing cymbals lead to a funky pitched vocal outro.
Pecknold’s collaboration is quite apparent on “You’re the One,” a gentle, folky ode to a loved one. Longstreth sings of seasons changing, springs, falls, flowers, and sun, conjuring the bucolic ambiance of Fleet Foxes. The sparsest track on the album, the song glides across gentle harmonies straight into the smoky, brassy “(I Wanna) Feel It All.” With beautiful flute and jittery strings, this track’s orchestral instrumentals accompany Longstreth’s soft singing for a smooth, melancholy tune.
All things considered, the album is a solid addition to the Dirty Projectors canon. While a few of the lyrics weren’t fully convincing, it’s nice to see Longstreth with a more optimistic outlook on love. The prominence of horns and more organic studio sound shows a comfortable middle ground between 2017’s Dirty Projectors and 2012’s Swing Lo Magellan, resulting in an eccentric album that’s worth a listen.
