There's a thing I've been thinking about off and on, and it's basically this.
Most people do not understand what the concept of solidarity IS.
I'm sure I've commented about this before, because god fucking damnit do I see this constantly. But at the same time, I don't think I really explained how absolutely insane people's calls for solidarity ARE.
Solidarity IS: When two groups with different causes but the same goals support each other. Example: SAG and the SWG going on strike together because they both desire better wages for their respective groups, and by working as a unified front they can bring even higher levels of pressure on the studios.
Solidarity is not: The base assumption that disparate social movements with entirely different goals will work in constant mutual support because they assume themselves in opposition of a common foe.
I mean, I do know people have no grasp over long term history but I do remember the 2016 Pulse Shooting... and how, within the month, BLM activists were working to shut down pride parades and speaking over LGBT activists because they felt the mass murder of gay people was taking attention away from them.
Solidarity is not a thing you're getting by default, it's a thing granted through mutual respect. And sisters, yall don't have the respect of most of the people you march on the behalf of.

I feel like there’s a lot of stuff coming to light lately about ao3’s glacial pace at adopting transparent and actionable antiracist policies (and the fact that a longtime head of the abuse team who helped draft their abuse moderation bylaws was documentably quite racist herself). And on the one had, like what you brought up about it taking a while for the archive to address the AI issue because of organization size and slow ability to pivot, I can see why it took some time to iron out the code etc for the new block mute functions. But on the other hand, I feel like not much else has happened, and more volunteers are coming forward about it having been a kind of catty and clandestinely bullying environment. Since you’ve been active for a long time and run an (albeit much smaller) archive of your own (pun, haha), I was wondering if you had any thoughts on this. And if there’s anything unique or cool in the SWG bylaws or structure to either prevent this sort of 1) buildup of crappy user behavior and 2) insular and punitive moderator culture, or if you’ve dealt with anything similar on the site etc etc. and maybe if you have any advice for folks who want to open their own archive or who just mod a large discord etc etc.
Oh yes, anon, I have tons of thoughts and ideas, and thank you for these wonderful questions! <3
First of all ...
ao3’s glacial pace
I recently wrote about the OTW’s fumbling of the AI issue and compared change on a large organization to port-rounding the Titanic. The AI issue is an apt illustration of that. In the time it took for the Silmarillion Writers’ Guild to 1) decide we needed an AI policy, 2) write said AI policy, 3) open it for public commentary, and 4) research how to block and then implement blocks on AI scrapers to the best of our abilities (since this will never be 100% since not all scrapers follow the rules), the OTW managed to ... assure a distressed membership base that the thing they were worrying about (AI scraping) had been blocked in December. Why did it take a week just to say, “Hey guys, we actually did this months ago”? When we (with far fewer resources!) took the exact same span of time and managed to write a policy, release it, and research and implement AI bot blocks?
Part of it is that, yes, smaller orgs have the ability to be more nimble. On the SWG, there is me at the helm, three active site mods, and two Discord mods who work on policy, involving volunteers (like our inclusivity focus group) as needed. We generally go with a majority rule, and we’re not bogged down by the legal obligations of a nonprofit as far as our governance. But it also reaches a point where the size of an organization is not the only reason why it can actually get things done, and when it takes a week to offer reassurance to your membership that you have in fact done what they want, it really begs the question of whether that organization is able to effectively function at all.
Without commenting on the viability of the specific demands of @end-otw-racism, they are absolutely right that three years is too long to go without action. That's absurd, and it’s hard to see it as anything but thinking that the right words following George Floyd’s murder were all that would be required and hoping that promises of actual action would be forgotten. Actually, I’m more sympathetic to the time to implement new block/mute code than I am to the failure of the Board to take the promised action against racist harassment within the OTW: the coders are purely volunteer, not elected, and the burnout of “techno-volunteers” is a known reality (e.g., De Kosnik 2016) of running fandom sites because it is a hard job, invisible and unappreciated, and it is never done. I know that I have new features and improvements on my to-do list for the SWG for more than a year now because maintaining the current site and fixing it when it breaks takes priority and a lot of my time. So when coders take a while to get something done? Okay, fair. But the Board? Were the ones who promised action that they don’t seem to have actually intended to take. In even the most cumbersome organization, we should be seeing goals set and progress, in however small steps, being made toward those goals. In three years.
if there’s anything unique or cool in the SWG bylaws or structure to either prevent this sort of 1) buildup of crappy user behavior
I think the OTW/AO3 and the SWG begin from completely different philosophical foundations.
I’ve been in Tolkien fanfic fandom since 2004 and founded the SWG in 2005, so at the risk of being all “I was there, Gandalf” ... I was there when the OTW and AO3 were first being discussed, largely lurking but definitely following the discussions. And I was there for the content purges on LiveJournal and FanFiction.net that precipitated those discussions, and I was a part of fandom when writing adult content--especially LGBTQIA+ adult content--was risky business, both within fandom and “IRL.” From this climate (and the fear it created) came the OTW and AO3: the idea that “we own the servers and run the organization so we can accept everything that is a fanwork on our site,” and fans would no longer need to fear waking up and finding years of their work gone in a single deletion spree motivated by gratifying fans who ascribe to purity culture or advertisers or anyone.
The OTW’s mission, in their own words: “The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization established by fans to serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture in its myriad forms” (emphasis mine). The aim of the OTW (and consequently AO3) is and has always been to archive everything. They are a universal archive on order of Project Gutenberg or Archive.org. The OTW’s FAQ calls AO3 “fandom’s deposit library” (“Is the OTW trying to replace all other archives?”). In other words, the primary purpose is storing as many fanworks as possible, regardless of the content of those fanworks.
Yes, this means the OTW considers AI-generated fanworks as legitimate. Yes, this means that the OTW considers fanworks with blatantly racist (or sexist or homophobic or transphobic or ...) content as legitimate. The parallel I keep drawing is to the ACLU, which prioritizes civil liberties in the same way that the OTW prioritizes fanworks preservation, which leads them to sometimes end up defending reprehensible people and viewpoints (and fanworks). They prioritize a principle above the harm that principle, taken to its logical extreme, could cause to people who are by and large already marginalized in and therefore harmed by society. That is not a critique of either organization, just a statement of fact, and this is where I feel like fans hoping for increased moderation or oversight of fanworks posted on AO3 are banging their heads against the wall. The OTW will never be that place; their very mission and reason for existence forbids it.
The problem is that, for most fans and fandoms, AO3 is their only option as an archive. Which brings me to the SWG ...
The SWG (which opened its archive in 2007, two years before AO3 entered open beta) originated during the same fandom era as AO3. The key difference is that where OTW/AO3 focused on fanworks and the values they embraced around the worth of all fanworks, the SWG focused on people and creating a fandom space that was open, welcoming, and civil. The Tolkien fandom was also a pretty messed-up place at the time. There were dozens of small, Tolkien-specific archives, most of which imposed some sort of content restriction, either in the sense of what they focused on (like the SWG focuses on Silmarillion fanworks) or in excluding certain content, such as adult-rated fanworks or slash. This certainly caused its share of hard feelings but I wouldn’t say was a problem in and of itself: There were so many archives and communities that there was someplace for everyone. The larger issue, from my perspective (as a new Tolkien fan when I started the SWG in 2005) was that bullying and harassment were extremely common in some places; homophobia and misogyny were acceptable under the guise of “canonicity” or “respect for Tolkien”; discussing racism, sexism/misogyny, homophobia, etc. in Tolkien’s works or in the fandom was Just Not Done in many spaces (you’d get pelted with a barrage of Tolkien Couldn’t Have Been Racist/Sexist/Etc. and Here’s Why if you tried); and new fans or fans who didn’t have full access to the texts were looked down upon and mistreated under the pretense of “correcting their canon.” Again, Tolkien fanworks fandom was very large and diverse, so this was certainly not all groups or sites, but it was true of many of the larger ones.
On the SWG, we decided we didn’t want to perpetuate this culture, so we set out to create guidelines (which we call our Site Etiquette) that prioritized civility and inclusivity. Again, we come from the same era of fandom history as the OTW, so we also ended up accepting most fanworks, but where we differ from the OTW and AO3 is that maximizing the fanworks we accept is not our priority. Instead,
Abusive or derogatory behavior will not be tolerated at any time or in any part of the SWG. We do not welcome or allow any content in our group that is designed to be hurtful or insulting.
This has been a part of our Site Etiquette since our archive’s inception, and it has persisted, unchanged, because it easily allows for the exclusion of anything--like the openly racist content identified on AO3 by End OTW Racism--that makes our group a hostile place for our members. We do also put the responsibility on our members to curate their own browsing experience on our archive:
Members are not required to like everyone, but they are required to be civil. If you dislike a fanwork, stop reading it and do not comment. If you dislike another member, do not interact with them.
To that end, we provide a number of warning tags that creators are expected to use (or else label their fanwork “Choose Not to Warn”), which includes a tag for “In-Universe Intolerance.” Unlike AO3, if a fanwork is mislabeled, the mods will work with the creator to assure that it is labeled correctly so that it meets the creator’s needs but also preserves visitors’ rights to curate what they read/view. That doesn’t mean that these systems will be perfectly implemented or will always meet everyone’s needs, but we have found that they generally do, in part because joining the SWG means you are agreeing to participate on an archive where civility and inclusivity are primary values.
Implied in all of the above but important to state, too, is that the SWG is a moderated community and site. We do not review everything posted to our site, but we will respond to “flags” or other reports of fanworks that violate our site guidelines, and on our Discord and other community spaces, we do hold our members to our standards around civility and inclusivity. We do address member behavior (mostly on our Discord) that creates a hostile culture, and we do ban members who demonstrate that they are unwilling to work on culling that behavior from their interactions on our spaces. That is not a preference and it is thankfully rare when we have to do so, but again, it becomes an option when you’re not looking at a person’s participation as the creation of a valuable cultural artifact that you are obligated to preserve but in terms of its impact on others who share those community spaces with them.
2) insular and punitive moderator culture
I honestly don’t see this as able to become an issue on a small site the way it appears to have become on the OTW.
By that, I don’t mean that small sites are incapable of having leadership who are cliquish, punitive, abusive, unresponsive, or any of the other charges levied against members of the OTW Board and leadership. However, the impact on a smaller site is much different than on a larger site: It’s easier for members to walk away.
There were definitely dysfunctional sites and groups in the Tolkien fanworks fandom’s history. What tended to happen is ... they didn’t last long. People went elsewhere with their stories and participation (because there were other places to go), the site’s reputation began to precede it so that people avoided it, and eventually it was just the rarefied few who had made it a miserable place to begin with making misery among themselves, which is really an ideal situation, when you really think about it. (In less extreme examples, my fandom history research using data from the Tolkien Fanfiction Survey has shown that users of small Tolkien archives tended to select where they posted on the basis of how the archive’s culture aligned with their own values.)
AO3, on the other hand, has developed a near-gravitational force in the fanworks world. Almost everyone uses it because we’ve reached a point where there are no other options for many fans. If you are in one of the few fandoms (like Tolkien) that still has independent archives, you can go there. If you can meet the content guidelines of FanFiction.net or Wattpad, those become options. But for many, AO3 is it. I guarantee there are many people right now, looking on at what is happening on the OTW with dismay, interested in at least crossposting elsewhere, but who have no place to go.
No one needs the SWG in the way that that need AO3; it is an “only option” for no one. Therefore, my comods and I, by necessity, have to create a site and community that people want to be a part of, and part of that (for us) is through our leadership: hearing and responding to our members’ needs, inviting member input wherever possible in our decision-making process, and being transparent in our decisions.
And again, so much of this comes back to our intentional work to create a community culture of civility and inclusivity and the fact that people who join us generally value those things as well. The SWG is a community archive, not a universal archive (to borrow De Kosnik’s terminology); it derives from our community values, collectively agreed upon, not the prioritization of massing as much relevant content onto our servers as possible in the interest of preservation and legitimization. (I have had, several times, conversations with people that led with, “I need you to consider if the values of this group are a good fit for you,” which is not a conversation that could happen on AO3, with its different goals.) Because we all agree on these central values when beginning our work, all of us--members and moderators alike--can generally work together to achieve our goals. That doesn’t mean that we always agree! The recent discussion of our AI policy is an example of discussions that got pretty intense at times. But I saved each of the three drafts of the policy as it evolved via the Wayback Machine, and those red comments at the top? Were by and large based on member contributions during the two-week discussion period. They, not the mods, were the reason the document ended up as complete and good as it was. But again, this can be done on a group that has, at most, several dozen active, participating members at one time. It is not possible on a site the size of AO3.
And again, if I disappointed the expectations of the SWG members? I know they would go elsewhere, and that is a pretty strong motivator to keeping them at the forefront of every decision I make.
if you have any advice for folks who want to open their own archive or who just mod a large discord etc etc.
I do! I wrote about the tech side of starting an archive here. Unfortunately, it’s pretty bleak right now, but I have hope that that could change. My exhortation to those dissatisfied with what’s going on with the OTW right now is to consider supporting small fandom sites and web development projects in any way you can, whether that’s donating money, providing tech skills or otherwise volunteering, or just making sure that you signal-boost and promote these projects when you can. (Seriously, when I see people link to a fanwork on the SWG instead of AO3, I want to send them a Valentine.) I am now less than three weeks from summer break and plan to spend that summer break trying to make the tech options less bleak. Watch this space.
As far as the non-tech side, I’d suggest first of all deciding who you want to be. What are your values? As I’ve said at several points in this (very long) post, the SWG values civility and inclusivity. We look at everything through that lens. That doesn’t mean that moderation decisions are made easy, but they are certainly made easier and more consistent/fair.
Once you know your values, be clear in what you expect from members/participants and hold them to it. Writing conduct guidelines is hard and is usually an ongoing process, but it is time well spent and, if done conscientiously, makes running a site or community much easier. It can be easy to be overwhelmed by a sense of urgency (“we needed to build this yesterday!!”) but spending a bit of time on this step will save you time and headache later.
Next: Moderation is not a dirty word. We, as Fandom, have gotten so used to these large, sprawling spaces like AO3 and Tumblr that are essentially unmoderated that we’ve forgotten that there was a time in the not-so-distant past where moderation was the norm. Again, that is not a panacea--there were plenty of awful “moderated” communities--but if you moderate with your community values and expectations in mind, you begin to build the culture you want to see.
Probably the biggest piece of advice I have is to think hard on the question: Do you really want to do this? Running a website or even a large community is a commitment. I do not have biological children, but I have pets and I have been a foster parent, and do you know what is the closest to a parenting commitment that I have? The SWG.
It is a lot of work, the work is often hard, it is usually thankless or invisible, and the buck stops with you. There is no higher-up to pass a responsibility off to. I have lost many evenings and days off to issues that arose out of nowhere with the site and that it was my responsibility to fix. Not gonna lie, that can be a bummer, and it’s worth asking if you’re up for it. A lot of small Tolkien archives died because of a combination of AO3, the ending of Yahoo! Groups, and plain loss of interest in those in charge of running them. This has contributed to the situation we are now in, where AO3 is the only option for many people, who are now not sure that they want all of their eggs in that basket, and yet here we are. Just like it’s 2008 again, and we’re wringing our hands over the lack of viable choices.
So just like taking on any large commitment, make sure you have what supports you need in place (who can help you? who would you rely on as a comod or coadmin? what are your limitations and how can you account for those in your plans?), do your due diligence to set your values and expectations, and then ... you do it.
Remember, it can be done. Many, many fans have done it before, and we can do it again.

My 2023 Fic List
I posted 78,856 words this year! It might not seem much, but it's a record for me. So here's the list of my 2023 works sorted by date.
Four Ficlets
Written for the SWG server's instadrabbling challenge - Elwing and Idril's First Meeting (124 words, G), Elwing and the Silmaril (76 words, T), Gil-galad and Cirdan Clean Up After the Kinslaying (228 words, T), Ancalagon's Death (106 words, G)
Gifts and Favors and a Trip (3560 words, M, Maedhros/Fingon)
My 2023 entry for My Slashy Valentine. A bit of angst, a bit of sexual tension, lots of fluff and a great deal of pining. Idiots to lovers.
Angsty Ficlet (792 words, G, Maedhros & Maglor)
Maedhros wakes up in the middle of the night, panicking for reasons unknown to himself. Maglor helps. An angsty ficlet with a little twist in the end.
Alone in the Unknown (4752 words, T, Maedhros & Maglor)
The latest part of my canon divergence AU. Maglor and Maedhros wander all alone - Maedhros nearly catatonic and Maglor trying in vain to reach him. The angstiest thing I've ever written.
Helcaraxë Cannibalism Ficlet (500 words, T, warning for cannibalism and character death)
Fingon doesn't want his body to be consumed after his death.
Maiar Hate This Simple Trick (2234 words, T, background Celebrimbor/Narvi and Galadriel/Celeborn)
My entry for Tolkien Remix 2023 is based on @elentarial's Desperation and Defeat. A series of letters between the main figures of the Second Age, trying to solve the mystery of Annatar running away from Eregion. Humor.
Proxy (5912 words, E, Maedhros/Fingon, Maedhros/Maglor, warning for dubious consent and unhealthy relationships)
Maedhros's love for Maglor is unrequited, but luckily for Maedhros, Fingon is hopelessly in love with him and somewhat resembles Maglor. A terrible love triangle between three terrible people. A deviation from my usual themes and characterization (and ratings), but the prompt in the kinkmeme spoke to me. I wrote almost 6k in a couple of days, which is a rarity for me.
Orodreth's Letter to Fingon (307 words, G)
Orodreth does everything he can to eviscerate Fingon in his letter of refusal concerning the Union of Maedhros.
Maedhros and Fingon Talk Cannibalism (247 words, T, warning for cannibalism and self-cannibalism mentions)
Another cannibalism snippet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maedhros and Fingon share their experiences with the subject in a light-hearted tone a little inappropriate for the discussion.
Lady Makalaurë Fëanáriel Dying of Poison, Late Second Age, Artist Unknown (8671 words, T, past fem!Maglor/Maglor's wife, warning for death and suicide mentions)
One of my two fics for TRSB 2023. Based on @independence1776's edit. In her space wanderings, fem!Maglor comes across a planet and finds out things that force her to return to Eldarin civilization. I always wanted to write a sci-fi AU, and I'm really glad I got to do it.
Now a Quill, Now a Sword (11817 words, T, Maedhros/Fingon, warning for character death and implied suicide)
My second TRSB fic, written in collaboration with @melestasflight. See their beautiful art here. It's a canon-compliant fic (with a bit of post-canon at the end) that tells the story of Maedhros and Fingon's relationship from the beginning to the end.
Two Ficlets
In this one (735 words, T), Fingolfin and Fingon discuss if Maedhros can be trusted. In it's companion (1082 words, T), Fingon and Maedhros talk about the same subject.
The Hunters (2016 words, E, fem!Maedhros/Aredhel)
Another kinkmeme fill. Baby's first PWP. (Proxy doesn't count. It has a plot and I tried to make the sex horrible.) Aredhel and Maedhros - two princesses of the House of Finwë - are cousins with benefits. I really enjoyed writing it, but I don't know if it's any good because I haven't reread it since posting.
Kaleidoscope (1436 words, M, Fingon/Sons of Feanor - all of them but not at the same time except Amrod and Amras)
Inspired by @melestasflight and @polutrope's The Seven Trials of Fingon the Valiant but darker in tone. Fingon sleeps with all of the sons of Fëanor. Why? Who knows? Up to interpretation. The fic doesn't make much sense, but I still like it and I'm really glad I wrote it. The third kinkememe fill.
That's all for last year. In general, I'm more happy than not with my writing. Hopefully, it will continue this year.
Thanks to every single person who's read, liked, reblogged, left kudos and comments on my fics. You make me want to keep writing.
#silmarillion#maedhros#fingon#russingon#maglor#tagging the main characters i write about#silm fic#zwc fic#my fic list#i've also been thinking about an original story idea#that dates back to ten years or more

Refurbished products and reuse of materials among the best practices to promote the circular economy
This was revealed by a study on the perceptions of Italians conducted by Swg on behalf of Swappie. Three out of 4 respondents also believe that electronic waste (e-waste) can be transformed into resources, have a new life and be re-entered into the market.
Although only one out of 2 Italians is familiar with the concept of circular economy, when faced with the definition of its guiding principles, 4 out of 5 (82%) recognize its potentially decisive role for environmental protection. This was revealed by a study[1] on the perceptions of Italians towards the circular economy conducted by Swg for Swappie[2], a company specializing in iPhone reconditioning, in the period between 28 February and 6 March 2023 involving a representative sample of 1,020 adults.
On the other hand, scepticism prevails with regard to the possibility that the circular economy can actually spread significantly: if for 23% of the sample the circular economy model will have a significant diffusion, for 59% it will not be able to spread enough to be effective. Over 57% of the interviewees, especially women and residents of the north of Italy, nonetheless believe that a new, more sustainable development model based on the circular economy is an already feasible path.
This positive view is confirmed by the data of the 2022 edition[3] of the Circular Economy Network[4] on the basis of which Italy, together with France, is the country that last year recorded the best performances in terms of circularity. In particular, the percentage of recycling of all waste reached 68%, almost double the European average (35%) while the rate of circular use of the material reached 21.6% against a European average of 12.8 %.
Again according to the SWG study, among the most relevant 'circular practices' to be implemented, Italians put the optimisation of waste management and the use of renewable sources in first place. Following, especially for Millennials, the reuse of materials and the reuse of existing products with an improvement of the original characteristics. Three out of 4 respondents also believe that electronic waste (e-waste) can be transformed into resources, have a new life and be re-entered into the market.
In terms of refurbished smartphones, over half of Italians (58%) consider them similar to new products from the point of view of operation. This percentage among young people even rises to over two thirds. Finally, the interviewees recognise that the development of the reconditioning sector can have a positive impact in limiting electronic waste (87%) and in educating people about a circular economy model (86%).

More old Smosh Games videos/moments I wanna bring back (the sequeling):
A follow-up to this post because screw it I haven’t posted Smosh in a while and there’s still so many forgotten videos I love from this channel
Really any cooking video they do but shoutout to the BBQ Bacon Sushi one and the 2016 Comic Con one. The former for the way they made the food, the latter for the commentary, both because it’s the pinnacle of Joven being the Ultimate Tired Dad Friend
The second Ghost Pepper Challenge they did with the Warp Zone, which IMHO is funnier than 95% of hot pepper stuff they’ve done since
The Chivalry Game Bang and the One in the Chamber Game Bang. No real reason. They’re underrated vids and I enjoy them.
Joven and Lasercorn’s Boxing Match
19:54-27:00 of the second Sheriff of Nottingham video
SSG Camp’s Mario and Sonic @ the Olympics video (Sohinki: “PICK SHADOW HE’S GOT A GUN!”)
The punishment and ending of the Shape Up Game Bang where they try their hardest to crush Wes to death
Both GTS Mafia Videos (with special appearances from Tim)
The Game of Life, which isn’t that old but it’s probably one of the last Game Bang-esque things they did
Jet Ski Top Fun
The ORIGINAL Hot Pepper Mario Party from 2014
The full video’s fine but Lasercorn’s reaction to one of the minigame results in 50 Shades of Mario Party (timestamp- roughly 6:50-7:00)
MatPat hires Smosh Games
This Game Bang which is basically just 7 minutes of shamelessly exposing and exploiting Joven’s shock kink
The first SWG Just Dance Game Bang which results in Noah nearly getting hypothermia
All of the Block of Love Maricraft saga but particularly The Japan Incident
The Dit.ty bonus video where they get an app that makes songs out of anything you type and spent 75% of the video roasting Joven with it
There’s too many videos for me to name but some older shows like Dope or Nope, Why We’re Single, Cage Match Challenge, and Smosh Games VS some real gems in there. Especially SGVS and CMC, which were both super underrated.

Legendarium Ladies April - Prompts for April 01
It’s finally here, it’s finally April, we’re finally starting! Welcome to Legendarium Ladies April 2019! Can you believe that it’s our sixth year? I hope you all will have fun, whether you’re one of our regular participants or new to theevent - in short, make a female-centric fanwork whether or not it’s a prompt response, tag it #legendarium ladies april, and you’re playing! Our FAQ might help if you have any further questions. Also remember that the Silmarillion Writers Guild runs their challenge(s) in March/April to complement ours? This year March’s is due April 10 and all about the Hidden Figures of the Legendarium and on the SWG, so give them a look and maybe you’ll find a way to combine LLA and the challenge?
Most of all, though, thank you for being here - enjoy this month! ♥ Here is your first set of prompts!
General Prompt: In the Mirror
For our first prompt of LLA, let’s look at women and how they see themselves. Galadriel’s Mirror may be a divination tool more than anthing else, but Angelica Baggins’ gift from Bilbo is a bona fide mirror - more than that, she is teased for her alleged vanity. What about Tar-Vanimeldë who apparently preferred indulgences over ruling? But - all of these instances are probably written by outsiders looking in. for this prompt, explore what the Legendarium’s women themselves saw (or felt) reflected.
Picture Prompt: Women by @em-niwa
Poetry Prompt: Portrait by Christina Olivares
of you: small girl in a torn dress,
the dress is pink as a dream, a tongue, jacaranda-jeweled tree a fire beside. What is left behind is never left behind if we never disown its weight Let her and her press her body here and there or lie: you might become any burned house
an open palm upon which these future ghosts will cut astonished rivers Everything, and yearning, might snag in your current You might
become night, a succession of her and her mouths
Lucid. A hot swift. A starling startling northwards. Lonely but good, you’re so good that when clouds open over Fordham Road you turn mythical turn into a palomita and rise, rise into smoke, a burn scar a child’s daydream: am I becoming, have I begun
Previous Years’ Prompts: 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018

8: What is one mistake you've made while roleplaying?
This is super personal, so it’s going under a cut.
Since towards the end of SWG’s original height, near the time City of Heroes launched, but before EQ2 landed, the person I was dating and living with brought up the idea of having our characters in different MMOs become couples.
It wasn’t all that much of a mistake, initially. Even though he and I parted ways, it didn’t have many immediate effects.
By GW2 and SW: TOR, I got into a fairly long term (10 years) relationship again with my first fiancee. Initially, we were in different states, so we made our TOR characters a couple - our group did about 2 years of pre-game RP - though that didn’t happen in GW2 because I nope out on Asura in that manner unless I’m playing an Asura.
And that’s where things became a long, spiralling mistake. Through several games, up till the relaunch of XIV, our main characters were always romantically involved.
Fast forward a bit to December 2013. I met someone in XIV who ended up becoming my main’s oathsworn (she’s not one for marriage, at all). He lived here in the same state as I do, just two hours away, so the fiancee and I went to meet him; sometime within that month, he became part of the Household, and we started dating OOC. My fiancee liked him well enough, but always was a touch wary of him; I wasn’t sure why till after a car wreck in November 2016.
He showed us an image of himself as a teenager/young 20 year old, and he looked uncannily like the person who high-level gaslighted me as a young teen (which is another story for another time). That was only rather reinforced during the next election primaries, as my CPTSD was shot from the car wreck, and I had a night terror that was almost entirely realistic (pro tip - if you get night terrors never use sleep masks because instead of the shadowy shapes you see in normal night terrors, it reverts to REM level image creation).
The night terror was that someone had come into my room, then got into the bed, and was forcibly turning me towards them, then trying to pull me to them in a very possessive, domineering manner. The face was obscured because there was bright light in the room behind him (as it I was apparently aware it was midday), but it was impossible to tell if it was the person who gaslighted me (one of the politicians here has a name from that mess, I don’t deal well with political season here) and the guy I met in XIV.
He was very good at manipulation, he was very mentally abusive. After my fiancee moved back home for a job in September 2014, this guy only got worse with the abuse. Although I had been gaslighted as a teen, the textbook type of gaslighting is a tad unfamiliar to me; after you have someone nearly hardwire your reality into something that almost belongs in a novel, it’s actually pretty fucking hard to recognise lesser abuse.
This person was also exceptionally controlling, telling me how to run my FC even after he’d stopped being an officer. Telling me how to write stories for the FC RPs, and getting super passive-aggressive if I didn’t agree to it, rather than trying to hash out better ideas together. He also was so insecure - coupled with his controlling nature, mind you - that he basically forced every single one of my character into some sort of relationship RP, and threw fits if it seemed like the few who weren’t attached got into relationship RP; after any one of them seemed to be getting romantically involved with someone, he rather pushed one of his characters into romancing that character, until I’d relent to it.
Initially, I wasn’t so bothered by it, I’d RP’d relationships with people I’d dated before at that point, and the time spent with my fiancee before this all happened had started conditioning me into it. It was after the first time this person demanded I stopped RP’ing with someone that things started to bother me.
Unfortunately, with this person, it all became conditioned into me. I tried several times to untangle my characters after we started having massive fights - which he never got into a fight with me unless we were alone, another massive manipulator/gaslighting trick - because at that point, he wasn’t playing XIV much, and because of the car wreck in 2016, he’d moved into the other room because I literally could not be touched without massive pain (well, more than usual, fuck you fibromyalgia). I wanted to be able to continue growth with my characters, especially my main character, but any progress I made lead to him having a fit over it, and another fight.
He also always insisted things weren’t as bad as they seemed. He used a borderline personality disorder trait, splitting, against me; he’d claim he hadn’t done anything terrible, and that I was just splitting - however, largely, I learned to handle my issues with splitting in the early 2000s, after I learned I had BPD, though admittedly, his shite made it very difficult not to have splitting occur more frequently.
Eventually, someone very dear to me was on Discord with me while I was laid up from a surgery. The kindness and caring that person was showing me had been waking me up to what was going on. The day this occurred, there had been a horrible fight before the guy left for work, cus I could literally not do anything, and had an issue with the bedding, and he flipped out about absolutely having to stay home and fix it when I could have just waited by going to sleep in a lazy-boy downstairs - which I had told him, but he made the almost executive decision to deal with it himself.
After my fiancee, our future houseboy, and this person saw what I wrote out to describe it, I managed to explain what happened to my mum, and when this guy got home that day, she told him he had to move out.
The freak out he had over that was amazing. He came upstairs, heard me laughing with the dearheart who was trying to help me get back to being at least mentally/emotionally functional, and just demanded I get off the call. He refused to accept the 24 hour rule, or that I actually did not feel up to it. I was so freaked out, that I didn’t disconnect the Discord call properly, I just pulled the headset out.
Little did myself and that dearheart know, at the time, but that flips Discord into speakerphone; he muted his mic, and listened to the whole incident. This guy yelled at me, demeaned me, and bullied me into a grand maul panic attack in which I lost the ability to speak, and even move. And instead of backing off, he threatened to get my panic medication and force the conversation to continue. I can’t even remember what caused him to back off from it, but he did. Plugged the headset back in, and found out that it never disconnected, and everything was finally heard.
That single thing snapped the last chain keeping me from ending things with that person. It took him a couple of months to move out, and he was still very aggressive frequently; I had to go to Philly for an appointment, and he was being so aggressive about spending the day there even though I had planned to spend time with the person who overheard the fight via Discord, the nurse took me back to the room, and immediately asked me about domestic violence (and that was really the first time I had a good cry about it - the appointment ended up being 2 hours, because their DVU came to talk to me).
I didn’t often take it laying down. I basically became a tiger that got cornered - I would unsheathe the claws, and lash out, in an attempt to get him to back away from me, frequently. Towards the end, I was having to do so several times a week. But it was either fight back, or be totally undone. Literally, the only thing that ever worked to stop him was psychological warfare.
However, even after all that, I discovered that what he did with XIV (in particular) had left some pretty lasting ramifications.
The first of which is that I discovered that it had literally become hardwired into my brain that the game is experienced with your significant other. I get extreme anxiety about things when someone I’m with has their characters romantically involved with others - which the fact that it’s a thing pisses me off greatly. For a time, I also had issues bothering with the MSQ, because that was something that was done with the ex for basically four years; that’s gotten significantly better, as I’ve done the past two patches without someone going through them with me.
The weirdness about character relationships isn’t going away though, even when the other person is only doing it 100% IC. I’m trying to break out of that mindset, but it’s fucking difficult as hell.
I also now get massive anxiety when a stranger starts any sort of flirty or romantic RP towards my characters. Even people I’ve known a few months trigger that anxiety. Because I don’t want them to do what the ex did again, now that I’ve figured out the lasting repercussions.
So, after all that, I feel like ever getting involved with relationship RP with someone I was dating was a huge mistake.
Thanks for the ask, @vianne-solainteau - sorry it was so ah…heavy.
#personal#rant-like#try not to think about this whole thing much#thank gods for the boy that helped me realise wtf was going on#vianne-solainteau#prompt answers

Writing M-Thing
I got tagged by @glorfindel-of-imladris! Thank you! ^_^
1) How many works in progress do you currently have?
I have one original story (Tamlin) that I started for NaNoWriMo 2016 and is almost finished. And I have two Silmfics that I started for various SWG challenges and never finished.
I’m perpetually short on time, but that will change next year when one of my work goals will be Having A Better Work-Life Balance. :D (I knew this year would be a bear and here it is with fur and claws.) But I’m pretty good about not starting stories that I don’t reasonably think I can finish. I have about a dozen WiPs in my head.
2) Do you/would you write fanfiction?
LMAO. I not only write fanfic but own a fanfic archive and write scholarly papers about fanfic. I’m past the point of being ashamed of that. (Even my principal read my last paper.)
3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?
I honestly like things about both. Ebooks are good for reading in bed. They’re good when I am doing research and need to collect notes and quotes. The price is usually right when I can’t find something used or at the library. And they take up far less room than paper books. We live in a singlewide trailer, so space is at a premium.
Paper books fit so nicely in the crook of my arm though. And they have that smell: I spent a few hours in my classroom this morning (see above about work-life balance ...) and took a stack of new books out of the closet to pass out to the kiddos tomorrow, and I just stood for a moment, smelling that new-book smell. (I will require the students to also smell their books tomorrow!) And I love going to the library.
4) When did you start writing?
I don’t even know. The first story I remember writing was in 4th grade (age 9). It was called “Desert Challenge” and was about a horse. But I always had notebooks full of stories and the starts of books, both fiction and nonfiction.
5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?
I have some close fandom friends whom I would trust to read some of my rawer stuff. And Mr. Felagund and my sister have read drafts of things. But generally, I’m a pretty private writer until something is ready to publish. I don’t use a beta, for example.
The exception is scholarly stuff. I generally ask at least one person to look over my work, and it has to be someone I trust can be mean to me if needed. @heartofoshun is my usual go-to, but Mr. Felagund and @nimium-amatrix-ingenii-sui have helped me out in the past too.
6) Where is your favorite place to write?
Right here in my study! Although I am very much not particular. I have written lots in ice rinks and ski lodges. (Mr. Felagund used to play hockey and is now a rabid snowboarder.) I don’t need quiet or any particular atmosphere ... just my laptop.
7) Favorite childhood book?
I remember constantly rereading The Giver by Lois Lowry and The Black Stallion’s Ghost and The Black Stallion Legend by Walter Farley. I graduated into the adult section pretty young. (I still wonder if my mom knew what I was reading! It was some pretty intense stuff. I ought to ask when she’s hear for the holidays.)
8) Writing for fun or publication?
Both. Mostly for fun. I do try to publish my scholarly stuff. But I blog a lot too, which is just for fun. Fiction ... publishing short stories is pretty unrewarding, so I haven’t tried in a while. I probably should; it’s hard to make myself do it. Fan fiction: If I write it, I post it. I’ve never tried to publish a book.
9) Pen and paper or computer?
Computer. I can type like the wind, but my handwriting can’t keep up with my brain.
10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?
I was a writing minor in university. Those were the last writing courses I took. I don’t generally find a lot of value in writing classes (even as, ironically, writing is a big part of what I teach). I have learned far more from workshopping my stories, reading nonstop, and critiquing/teaching writing.
11) What inspires you to write?
It’s hard to say. Ideas can grab my brain for any number of reasons: something I read that makes me wonder (or want to argue!), a place that makes me feel a certain way, a song that brings certain images and emotions together in my mind and a story is born. In fandom, I do love challenges.
The ocean is always inspiring to me. There have been only a few times in my adult life that I’ve gone to the seaside and not come away with a new story in my mind or a major addition on something I’m working on.
I’m not a tagger, so if you want to do it--go for it! :)

Guild Politics Wank: Stealing A Community
As long as there is humanity, there will always be politics.
... even in something that should be as simple and as fun as a video game. After rejoining SWTOR for the first time in two years, I finally decided I wanted to explore more of the PvE content. Sure, I could do random PUGs but really, who wants to do that? We all know the headaches that result from the crappy tank or the sorry healer or the DPSer than can’t stay out of the stupid. So I opted for joining a guild. As a Star Wars Galaxies alum, I sought out people who had played SWG. For better or worse, I ended up as a member of The Jedi Order on Begeren Colony. Things started out okay. I wasn’t all that crazy about the trials for the guild ranking system, but... whatever. I’d give it a shot, right? And I did meet some really remarkable people who have become very good friends over the past year-plus. It was not until I’d been a member of the community for a while that I learned just what a horrible, hateful, and deceitful little worm that the community owner was. When I first joined, he was rather like Old George before the American Revolution -- what one of my professors called “salutary neglect”: We in the community were left to our own devices, but he retained just enough power over the guilds that we had to rely on him to do basic things like unlocking our guild ships or passing keys to our officers. He was, however, like King George, mostly absent. Thus, we frequently had to find ways to work around him. (Note: Yes, you will find many other YouTube videos calling him out on his hypocrisy, but a) was not aware at the time and b) he was never around. Very little interaction with him personally. Probably a good thing... ) Finally, in September of last year, he called it quits. He was, he stated, leaving SWTOR to focus on real life -- namely starting up his consulting business. As of 2 September 2016, he declared in the forums that he would be handing over permanent ownership of the community over to the man who had practically served as his XO all those years:
This was taken as a positive thing by the community. For “Dexlar,” his “longtime understudy,” it was a chance to finally provide leadership that would be present... and attempt to repair a good deal of the animosity that Orion (and his personality, uhm, quirks) stirred within the gaming community as a whole. Within a few days, however, it was clear that Orion regretted turning over the keys. He logged in, lamenting that so many community bans had been lifted; that so many policies that he had been the champion of had been changed. He made a few passive-aggressive swipes in community chat online, but then faded mostly into the aether.
Or so we thought. Earlier this afternoon, Orion approached Dexlar, requesting the community back. Dexlar refused. Members of our community began logging to our enjin site... only to find themselves redirected to the website mentioned in the graphic above.
Orion, having been told NO, literally attempted to steal the community.
A community of stories and histories that we have now lost because the site has been shut down.
A community that the players paid for -- the Enjin site, TeamSpeak server access, etc., resulting in not just an inconvenience, but also theft.
Yes, an exploration of his past history shows that he is, as a friend says, a “douche nozzle.” But in this action, he has screwed over the self-same individuals that he says built the community, and claims as his “friends and allies” in the Force.
But we are not his friends, nor are we his allies. He has proven that today. He has proven he is not worthy of respect, and is the lowest of humanity: An unscrupulous, deceitful asshat who cannot and should not be trusted with any form of business. For if this is how he treats his friends, imagine how he might treat his business associates!
This man is no Jedi. In fact, even those Sith with a code of honor would reject him. And, while I have my issues with the current owner, I am here for my friends and my fellow guild mates. Orion has not stolen the community. He has stolen only the name. We remain.

Spring Semester 2017 Classes
I’m anticipating this semester to be a lot more academically challenging than the last. All of classes are more difficult, and I’m taking 18 credits instead of 17 like I did in the fall. This semester it will be even more important that I reach out to my professors for help and tap into all the academic resources that Smith has to offer. That being said, I’m very excited about each and every course I’m taking:
EGR 110 - Fundamental Engineering Principles - This is the second 100-level engineering course at Smith. It focuses on mass and energy systems. We’ll be applying the theoretical concepts we learn in class to a wide range of real life applications, including the pressing issue of global climate change.
PHY 118 - Introductory Physics II - Due to an AP credit from high school, I was able to skip out of Intro Physics I (while still having it count towards my engineering major!) and place into this course. I’m definitely excited to be taking physics again, but I’m hoping that I won’t find myself falling behind due to not taking Intro Physics I at Smith.
MTH 212 - Calculus III - Calc III is similar to Calc I and Calc II, but in 3-DIMENSIONS (aka significantly more difficult). This is my last Calculus class I have to take at Smith for my engineering major; I’m really excited for the class but a little bummed that it’s my final one (I really love Calc).
SWG 150 - Introduction to the Study of Women and Gender - Intro SWAG covers a very wide range of issues related to women and gender studies, from sex vs. gender to the interconnectedness of race, class, and gender to women’s literature to queer theory, and SO much more. I am SO excited for this course!
AMS 100 - Thinking Through the 2016 Presidential Election - This is a one credit, seven week lecture course that meets on Tuesday evenings. Every week, a different pair of Smith professors will speak about a subject related to better understanding the factors that played into the 2016 election and its outcomes.

Ultimi sondaggi politici elettorali: M5S primo partito
Ultimi sondaggi politici elettorali: M5S primo partito
