Merry Christmas everyone!
In Sweden, we celebrate on Christmas Eve: we watch classic old Disney shorts at 3 pm (a tradition since 1960), and then we start with food, and eat together, and then after dinner, SANTA shows up to deliver the presents (often when someone in the family have CONVENIENTLY gone out to buy the newspaper ... it's sad, really, how they keep missing Santa every year ... :p).

Herb cookie encourage you to burn the gavle goat, You must burn the funny swedish straw goat.
I drew this sketch out of fun and its been in my head for a while. But there is this whole "tradition" in sweden where people burn a strawgoat that your not supposed to burn or else you'll get arrested for arson.
Its one of the reasons why I love december and christmas so much, its because of very dumb shit like this. But yeah uhhh merry early christmas for my swedish people out there.
Lets burn the gavleblocken with herb cookie! A sacrifice to the gods!

The Gävle Goat.

Are you a fan of the gavlebocken
I am, but my buddy @benito-cereno is always upset when someone inevitably sets it on fire. But I actually think that's a cool new tradition. It's a nice call back to when holidays were all about vandalism and breaking stuff. And I'm a traditionalist.
For those who don't know, the Gavlebocken is the Scandinavian "Yule Goat." It's probably part of the same general grab bag of traditions that Krampus connects to since Swedes used to dress up as goats during the solstice season and dance around from house to house. Nowadays, it's more a symbol of the Christmas season, particularly in Sweden, but anywhere in Northern Europe, really. There's a famous giant one every year in Gävle, Sweden. If you ever see a little straw goat with a red ribbon or anything similar, it's not a reindeer. It's a gavlebocken or Yule Goat or a bunch of other names.

I missed the crochet pattern last year, semi considering making one (and possibly crocheting flames on the goat) this year.
For the folks who crochet you can find the free pattern here!

great-grandma's norwegian meatballs and gravy recipe
y'all remember that post about the person who fell out w their mom and posted her meatloaf recipe as revenge? well,
Tumblr media
^ THIS is my mom's copy of my family's christmas eve norwegian meatballs recipe. i don't even celebrate christmas anymore, lol
don't worry, i transcribed and edited that mess into something more legible. here it is, under the cut:
recommended tools:
2 mixing bowls
whisk/beater
frying pan
spatula
ingredients:
12 tbsp very finely chopped onion
8 tbsp butter
2 lb ground beef
3/4 lb ground pork
1 cup bread crumbs
1 cup milk
2 eggs
4 tsp sugar
2 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
steps:
premix sugar, salt, nutmeg, and allspice
beat eggs
brown onions in half the butter
in a separate bowl from the sugar, mix the browned onions with beef, pork, bread crumbs, milk, and eggs. don't overmix, or the meat will become tough.
add sugar mixture to meat mixture, still taking care not to over-mix
shape meat mixture into 1 inch balls
heat the rest of the butter at a low temperature
add meatballs and brown over medium heat. shake the pan to keep meatballs round and ensure even cooking. serve alongside mashed potatoes, lefse, and søtsuppe!

Because the Swedish Christmas goat discourse comes around every year that while the Gävlebocken is the biggest one, straw goats is a traditional Swedish Christmas decoration and if you keep them inside they can last for a long time. In my family we have this guy who’s probably older then my dad. His name is Oden due to his eye having been sacrificed to gain wisdom fallen off at some point. He also has a creepy Santa buddy.
