PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on American blues musician "Slim Harpo," born James Isaac Moore (January 11, 1924-January 31, 1970), as illustrated by William Stout for his "Legends of the Blues" portraits series. Though also a guitarist, SH is most notably recognized as a blues harpist and vocalist.

MINI-BIO: "Music was always a side job for Slim, whose tunes were nonetheless covered by, among others, THE KINKS, THE ROLLING STONES, THE WHO, and THE YARDBIRDS. Recommended tracks:

Los Angeles Singer and cofounder of The Gun Club along with Kid Congo Powers who he taught how to play guitar using open tuning, the band was originally called The Creeping Ritual and the name change suggestion was made by Pierce’s then roommate Keith Morris from Circle Jerks. Jeffrey Lee Pierce was a huge fan of Debbie Harry who supported and encouraged him. It motivated him to bleach his hair and to become the president of The West Coast Blondie fan club. Coincidentally Kid Congo Powers was the president of The Ramones fan club in 1976, 3 years before they met. A big fan of the blues, rockabilly and reggae, he was a contributor and writer for Slash fanzine and wrote articles on contemporary punk as well as 30s blues, 50s rockabilly and reggae. His reggae pen name was “Ranking Jeffrey Lea”. He had done an interview with Bob Marley as a result since he had been a huge fan and had attended his concert in the mid-70s. He later traveled to Jamaica meeting with Winston Rodney (Burning Spear). His knowledge of the American roots music was aided by Phast Phreddie Patterson and having access to his vast record collection. And later access to Canned Heat frontman Bob Hite’s blues record collection fortified his blues influence. Difficult to put The Gun Club in a category or genre during the Post Punk era due to their unique sound, they are considered pioneers in the genre of “cowpunk”, ”swamp blues”, “punk blues” as well as “tribal psychobilly blues”. Kid Congo commented that the early Gun Club incarnation were “too arty for rock people, far too rock for arty people, too cuckoo for the blues crowd and too American for punk”. The seminal and groundbreaking debut album “Fire Of Love” with which they applied a southern swamp inspired voodoo sensibility and style as well as a stripped down bluesy punk rock sound had 5 of the well known tracks produced by Chris D. from The Flesh Eaters and has been highly influential on many noteworthy artists. 🔥🖤🔪
