SWAMI JOHN REIS & THE BLIND SHAKE - Modern Surf Classics (2015)
. Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake pay tribute to the classic surf and Rock ‘n’ Roll instrumentals of the 1960’s and update the genre for today’s more extreme, modern surfer. 13 original, modern surf compositions create this tidal wave of booming tom toms, shrinking saxophones and a chaotic surge of guitars. Let this south swell topple you and may you be pinned in it’s undertow of reverb. Swami

Swami and the Bed of Nails — All of this Awaits You (Swami)
Tumblr media
youtube
Swami John Reis has been in a lot of bands, but the ones you probably love the most—Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu — were joint projects with Rick Froberg, who passed away suddenly in June 2023. The two had made some of the most ferocious, tuneful hardcore on offer in the 1990s with Drive Like Jehu, and, with Hot Snakes, were the real thing in a sea of “rock is back” pretenders through the aughts.
Hot Snakes reconvened in 2018 after a 14-year hiatus for Jericho Sirens, and they were writing more material when Froberg died. All of This Awaits You comes from that set of songs, reconfigured for another band, with members drawn from Reis' storied history. Hot Snakes Jason Koukounis plays drums, alternating with Richard Larson from Night Marchers, while Night Marchers Tommy Kitsos plays drums. Reis sings and plays guitar, with Mark Murino on second axe. Joe Guevara, who played on the last solo Swami album, adds keys and synthesizer.
The songs rip hard, running fast and loud and full of hooks. “How Are You Peeling?” could easily be a Hot Snakes banger, with its ramping, vamping guitar riff, pummeling drums and ragged howling verse. It’s not complicated, but not stupid either. There’s a sweetening in the guitars just before the chorus starts that comes like a rainbow in a pool of diesel, and a wiggy little synth solo, and then it’s back to the gut-slugging pound and rush.
There’s a real—and welcome—blue collar aesthetic to this disc, a perspective sorely lacking lately even in the roughest varieties of rock. One single celebrates hot dog condiments. “I want ketchup and mustard and relish!” Reis shouts along to a very ear-wormy chorus. Simple pleasures. “Harbor Freight” blisters and rages and finds the income divide in home repair. Apparently, we’ve come so far that even dudes in their undershirts wielding power tools can be divided into haves and have nots. Shop at Harbor Freight at your own risk. As Reis gleefully explains, “The shit’s gonna break, the shit’s gonna break, the shit’s gonna break on you.”
A few of the cuts feel a little bit by the numbers. Doo-woppy “Teen Hate,” for instance, looks at young rebel cliches from the wrong side of 50, but closes in a “yeah yeah yeah” cribbed from the Beatles’ Hamburg days.  It’s fine, but no match for the psychedelic rush of “Lost in Bermondsey,” which is furiously hot but also kind of trippy.
All in all, it’s another very solid outing from an artist who did a lot to define post-hardcore punk and rock (check out the Swami Sound Volume 1 compilation he curated in 2003). Sadly, there will never be another Hot Snakes album, but meanwhile we’ve got this, and it rocks.

Swami and the Bed Of Nails
Swami and the Bed Of Nails “How Are You Peeling?” All of This Awaits You (08-02-2024) Debut album, featuring Swami John Reis (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork, Rocket From The Crypt).  Believe this is Reis’ first release since the untimely death (reportedly of a heart ailment) of Rick Froberg.  Together, they had formed such great bands as Pitchfork (1986-90), Drive Like Jehu (1990-95,

De Algemene Verwarring #95 - 10 July 2023
The ninety-fifth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, July 10, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-95-10-juli-2023/
Pictured below is Rick Froberg, here performing with Drive Like Jehu somewhere in the early nineties. It’s always a pity that I have to write something about someone who passed away unexpectedly at a much too young age. Rick Froberg was 55. That’s only three years older than I am, and he died from natural causes. Froberg was an graphic artist but was mainly known as frontman and guitar player for the bands (in chronological order) Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits and only that last one wasn’t with his partner in crime John ‘Swami’ Reis. I’ve seen the last three of those bands live, and I have always been most impressed with Drive Like Jehu, who released only two full length albums, but whose influence cannot be underestimated. It’s their brilliant mixture of melody and dissonance that have influenced fellow nineties bands such as Polvo, Trumans Water, and many more. Drive Like Jehu played in the Pit’s in those early nineties, and the day after they played in a garden in my student home town Leuven, saw them twice and each time left me in amazement. Later I saw Hot Snakes in Ghent, and as encores they played two Drive Like Jehu tracks and in all honesty I can say those two tracks blew the whole Hot Snakes set away. Drive Like Jehu was a brilliant, a brilliant band and I cannot recommend you enough to buy their albums. And when you are 55, you don’t die, ok? Laat ons dat afspreken.
Other music in this episode, last one of the season by the way, comes from Avengers, TNT, Nots, Swell Maps, Soft Drinks, The Christian Family, Chrome Cranks, Dinosaur Jr & Lou Barlow, Nova Mob, De Fabriek, and there’s also brand new stuff from Roy Montgomery, OroskĂ€llan, and Leda. Oh and by the way I have to apologize for a short break in the recording of this episode during the Brecht Ameel track. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy the summer and you’ll hear me back in September!

The Ledge #546: Runners Up
The process of compiling my annual list of the year's best albums rarely varies. It usually begins in mid-November with a combination of notetaking and mental obsessing. Then over Thanksgiving weekend I begin putting ideas into various categories that I couldn't even try to explain. Finally, the first couple of weeks of December sees this list finally coming together.
As you may expect, that initial list is much longer than the official post of the best of the year. There can be anywhere between 60 and 100 records vying for inclusion. This week's show comprises the 31 records that were in consideration before that final cut.
But that's not to say that these records are not as good as my "chart toppers". No, these days there's a fine line between a what makes the top ten and what makes the lower rungs. All of these records are fabulous albums that deserve to be heard by everybody. This is why the first time ever I've put together this "runners up" episode.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice
The second album by Hot Snakes originally released in 2002. Hot Snakes includes John Reis on guitar (also from Rocket From The Crypt & Drive Like Jehu) and Rick Froberg on guitar and vocals (also from Drive Like Jehu & Obits). Also in the band is Gar Wood (bass) & Jason Kourkounis (drums).
This is a great Punk/Garage Rock/Post Hardcore album. Rocks from start to finish. Great album artwork from Rick Froberg aswell.
