I picture this taking place in New York, based on an AO3 tag I came across: "Coruscant is New York" xD. I hc it's this cheesy but also dark Hallmark-esque story:

Jyn is from the suburbs and has a storied, criminal past. She goes to the city to search for her missing father and a roommate, while Cassian is an immigrant who has lived there for years, struggling to make ends meet. He still works as an undercover spy and moonlights as a chef at a restaurant. By chance, he finds Jyn's ad where she's looking for a roommate and answers.

things get complicated when Cassian receives his mission from Draven. I hc the title as The Hit List.

I hate how forgotten Rogue One is. It’s genuinely one of the best Star Wars movies to date. The lead characters all manage to stand out as individuals with stories of their own and the ending is an emotional roller coaster. This movie took a semi-plothole from way back in ANH and spun a story that enriched the franchise incredibly. R1 is how a “dark” SW movie should be done, taking a twist to the classic format and making it more grounded in the true perils of war while retaining the core messages of hope and (found) family.

Nesta Term from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for Day 5 of Ladies of Star Wars Appreciation Week (Theme: Favourite Underrated Characters). She’s a Jedha civilian with a really cool backstory who appears in the Rogue One Visual Guide. She’s a nun who worships chaos and death and I love her.

Warning: disapppinted rant, written on my phone in the bathtub.

So... I talked to a friend who is also an avid Star Wars fan and who loves Rogue One.

If you've talked to me, you'll know that I don't.

I don't hate it. I just... well, am slightly disappointed. And I never understood why. Why the movie felt so underwhelming to me until I said one thing: The only thing I absolutely loved about the movie was Bodhi Rook.

And it clicked. Rogue one is a great, it's a fantastic movie... it's just told from the wrong perspective. Some people can make that shift and some, like me, can't.

So, I'm gonna say something very mean: Jyn Erso is the most useless prop in the whole film. She's the McGuffin and you could literally replace her with a lamp and you'd still have a better movie. I am not disappointed in the movie, I am disapppointed in the completely botched main character. And the brain melting bends the film makes to try and make her relevant.

That starts with the opening and that unbelievably dumb move her mother pulls just to make her a poor, lost orphan. *handwave* "It doesn't have to make sense. Just kill her."

Next up is that thing with her Guardian. What the hell? *handwave* "Just make him leave her with a phony explanation"

Next is her motivation. *handwave* "Just make her suddenly passionate about the thing she gives no shit about. Because reasons. Plot. We need her to do it."

The ONLY thing that made sense with Jyn Erso's character was that she found Cassian hot. Wow. That's ...a nice emotional motivation.

BUT what makes this even worse, is the fact that you had a character sitting right there with believable motivation, believable conflict, fantastic character arc! Bravery. Strength deapite deep terror.

Ties to Jyn's father. Ties to the bad guys AND the kind of morality that makes Star Wars great.

Rogue One could have been a fantastic movie, if Bodhi Rook had been the main character.

Jyn's father was his mentor, he was the one that sent him out to deliver the death star plans. He had a direct, on screen connection (and a horrible one at that) to Forrest Whittaker's character and showing that, instead of "Oh, you are my foster parent that we never ever even saw" would given Whittaker's character a lot more depth and reason to be there.

Bodhi's character growth and emotuonal arc is both heartbreaking and believable and focusing on HIS sacrifice, would have given Leia's appearance and her words alot more weight.

Rebellions are built on hope. And the one person, doing the most terrifying thing, surviving torture, foghting amd conquering his own demons just for a splinter of hope for the galaxy was NOT Jyn Erso, it was Bodhi Rook.

Jyn Erso felt like a prop, something to drag along and do stuff at the right times for plot reasons. And love story. And females. Because you need to have females.

Well, if you needed that and het romance, make Cassian female. But that would make for a weird power dynamic that could turn off the male audience, right?

Strong female, seemingly weak male character?

Someone plain lacked the creative vision to look past the obvious and find the even more obvious.

Need female. Need males to be a certain thing. Can't compute.

All in all, the story of Rogue One is not a bad one. It's just badly executed. And that's uneblievably disappoiting.

My friend who loves the movie agrees btw. But he focusses on Cassian and for him it works. He just ignores the fact that Jyn exists past her being a plot device.
