in my mind, there is a version of episode ix where it isn't retconned that Rey's parents are nobodies, and instead her arc is about making peace with that and forging her own identity. the plot twist is that Finn's also as yet unknown parentage is actually important - maybe he's the son of one of the few surviving senators of the New Republic whose resources can help the Resistance turn the tide. meanwhile Poe realises that they both never had parents and decides to give them the best chosen family experience possible and ropes Leia in as adoptive mother - all part of Poe embracing that he is absolutely in love with that ex-stormtrooper. Rose gets over her feelings for Finn and becomes part of the team, platonically. Rey and Ben both live and never kiss, and we get to find out what a redeemed Sith might look like.

#star wars#simon kinberg#i know he has a mixed history with other franchises but#this is reminding me of when they dropped Michael Arndt from Episode VII#and got JJ Abrams to make the safest SW movie for Disney as possible#the fact these movies will be part of the Skywalker saga despite it supposedly ending with Ep IX says it all really

You don't get it. She's the weaker sex. It took her more effort in such a short time.
“Rey was the strongest person [Ben]’d known. She’d fought off the darkness in a way he never could.”
- TROS novelization
Lmao exCUSE me he fought off the dark for 23 YEARS; Rey was in Palps’s presence for approx. 5 minutes before she nearly gave in to him... 🙄

Hi! So, I saw your post about controversial opinions about star wars and I wanted to try this.
I liked "the last Jedi". I think is a good film, I really enjoyed it. I think Ryan Johnson is a really good director. And the scene in silence is... You can't tell me it's bad. I was on the verge of tears when I saw it in the cinema. And episode 9 is bad. Really bad. It sucks. The only thing I liked was that they didn't overuse previous material of Carrie Fisher, I was a bit scared of that but that's the only thing I think they did good in that movie.
There, I said it. Feel so good.
I do enjoy stirring up poodoo ;)
But seriously, I love seeing contentious SW opinions! This is a good one, too.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again; I love The Last Jedi. It's probably one of my favorite Star Wars films, and it's my favorite of The Sequels. The silence in the Holdo Maneuver scene is just... *Chef's kiss*
Good take!
I wouldn't say Episode IX is bad. I enjoyed it! But I will admit it is deserving of criticism.
I certainly take issue with a lot of the ways we see technology being used to resurrect dead celebrities, but how they brought back Leia one last time was good, and respectful of Carrie and her legacy. I certainly got a bit misty-eyed over it.
Yes! Confess, confess all your SW hot takes! It gives me life!

The one thing I miss about Star Wars is the vibes of Reylo and Caltrilla.
Like those ships wrote themselves, had wonderful thematic contrasts, were full of potential for amazing storytelling within the SW universe and all its weird space magic shenanigans, and the creators did... nothing that was worth it with their own material. They took the blandest, most boring path or simply destroyed the female character (I am still mourning Rey Nobody, even though I could care less about canon at this point in my life.)
I was willing to give Jedi Survivor a chance if, somehow, they pulled the "resurrected Trilla" card, but from what I have checked, they didn't. The game may be good, can't say because I haven't checked anything, but without Trilla and her dynamic with Cal (and also seeing Trilla and Cere interact!!)... it just doesn't sound that interesting to me. Respawn came up with such a great character and decided to get rid of her in one game.
Regarding Reylo, I'm not even gonna mention Episode IX because, while I understand people can enjoy it for a bit of fun or find something good in it (and I am truly happy for those people), that movie made me feel like my intelligence was being insulted, so yeah. Mentally, I am still at TLJ era.
Of course this is my personal opinion and experience with SW, which doesn't reflect anyone else and there's no right/wrong approach to this. I don't like indulging too much in the negative, because a) there are people still enjoying SW and Episode IX and b) fandom is for fun, so if you're not having fun..., let go of that fandom. Which is what I did.
However, I miss it sometimes, but for a saga that holds redemption arcs at the center of its narrative/thematic core, they fuck up a lot of them. Only ones which ended where it should, from what I remember, are... Vader and Kallus? And Revan, more or less.
Guess the answer is the same as always: fuck canon, write fanfic. If I ever manage to be a slighty more prolific writer, just a teensy bit, I would love to redo that one Caltrilla fic I dropped after watching Episode IX because I just couldn't engage with anything SW-related after that clusterfuck of a movie. I orphaned it from AO3, but it's still up.
Anyway, this random SW post is sponsored by a beautiful Caltrilla gifset that showed on my dashboard and reignited my hashtag FEELINGS.

TAG NINE PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER! I. Favourite Colours: Any shade of green {forest and emerald in particular}, black, silver, garnet. II. Favourite Flavours: Good coffee, deeply brewed tea, dark chocolate, coconut, and a 'scent flavour'... it's gonna either be beef being cooked on a fire, or specific to New Mexico... a crisp/cool afternoon when the sun is bright but not hot and you smell it...smoke, something earthy and green with an almost acidic bite if you breath it in just right. It's chile season, and it's being open roasted in giant metal roasters. And lastly, pinon. III. Favourite Genres: Most fantasy though with a penchant for High Fantasy. True Noir/ Mystery, Horror, History/Alternative History. I do enjoy Romance and Sci-Fi {typically golden and silver age are most often forgotten but truly a guilty pleasure} but tend to prefer them blended with a different genre. Poetry is entirely different and for me it's more like music than narrative fiction, though I do have a soft spot for the Romantics, and the Beat Generation. {You can have my Kerouac and my Ginsberg whence you've pried them from my cold, dead, yaddah yaddah}. And because I am a bastard, I'm going to ruin it all for you: Literally almost any Emily Dickinson poem can be read/sung to the tune of the Yellow Rose of Texas, or the theme to Gilligan's Island. You're welcome. IV. Favourite Music: Classical, Tribal Trap, Country, Grunge, Classic Rock {stfu, G-N-R and them are not YET classic rock}, 80s Rock/Metal. Broadway Musicals, Rap/R&B, really just about anything. Probably my favourite singers are Eddie Vedder {yes, I know}, Geoff Tate who's is utterly incredible even after 40 years. And honestly? Garth Brooks. V. Favourite Movies: SW: The Empire Strikes Back, Tombstone, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Strange Days, Highlander, CA:TWS, Doctor Strange, ST: The Undiscovered Country and just so so so many more. VI. Favourite Series: Constantine, Doom Patrol, Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Babylon 5, Farscape, Loki, ST: DS9/TNG/TOS/SNW {Really all of them except Voyager and Discovery}, Salem, Original Charmed, Witches of East End, Burn Notice, Fargo, Resident Alien, Res Dogs, Longmire, Justified, Dallas {Original and Revival} and Dark Shadows {Original AND Revival}. Family Guy, Bob's Burgers {and Archer}. Robot Chicken. Lastly I'm also going to say the Orville, which yes is a sort of parody of Star Trek, but also an homage, and a surprisingly well written one. VII. Last Song: Paint it Black ~ Ciara cover, Superhero ~ Johnny Hollow VIII. Last Series: Loki Episode 1-Season 2 or American Gigolo Episode 1. IX. Last Movie: The Noel Diary, The Dark Knight trilogy X. Currently Reading: Ten Little Indians anthology by Sherman Alexie, Digitisation and Digital Archiving: A Practical Guide for Librarians {second ed.} by Elizabeth R Leggett, ¡Sin resolver! Misterios de la historia by Dona Herwick Rice. XI. Currently Watching: The Fall of the House of Usher, Loki, Resident Alien XII. Currently Working On: The 500 or so posts I owe across my blogs. I am so sorry for being absolute fail.

Still some interesting comments coming out of the JCF...
Whatever the issues are with this film, I’m sure they’ll be more driven by the fact that they sacked the writer several weeks before script submission deadline, and not the director per se. Sacking the writer, whom we are led to believe created an original story from the ground up (and at such a pivotal time), always results in a better film… said no one ever.
Precisely. Colin Trevorrow was fired before shooting started on Episode IX, and we got TROS.
I don't think Disney has ever said they have expectations that their characters will be just as beloved as the OT characters were. That idea has always been something fans gossiped about than anything based in reality. Nothing in Star Wars has come close to the popularity of the OT characters and don't think there is any intention to try to duplicate that. What is more of a reality though is that there is enough of an interest in the 'Rey' character to make more movies about her and that is what they are doing.
Is there? Are that many people really invested in Rey as a character to want to see another film all about her?
She was the protagonist of the ST, but supported by Adam, Oscar and John, all with their own fans. It wasn’t until TROS that she really took centre stage...and the film was a disaster. It was panned by critics, didn’t perform as well as expected, and the fallout from it is still going on almost four years since its release. The fact that DLF waited this long before announcing a new film speaks volumes.
As the above poster says maybe the new characters won’t be as loved as Han, Leia and Luke...but there is a different between being ‘not as loved’ and ‘hated.’ And sadly post TROS hardly anyone had a good word to say about the Rey character. Oh, she has fans on the SW forums...but even there she has her critics. And the GA voted Ben/Kylo as the person they ‘wanted to see the most’ - not Rey.
To make matters worse, the choice of director shows that DLF have learned nothing from their mistakes. Rey’s detractors were actually vindicated by TROS. Those of us who tried to defend her were left with egg on our faces...and in my case the complete loss of affection for Rey. She went from a human being into an icon for religious dogma - because let’s face it, the Jedi from the PT were borderline religious fanatics, as even Lucas, their creator, showed. And instead of having the Order ‘evolve’, as Rian was clearly heading with TLJ, as even Lucas hinted at with ROTJ...all DLF did was throw everything away to recycle old ideas, trash any real advancement in the franchise and promote their tedious man hating agenda.
Will Rey be able to carry this film? I think not. With Adam’s screentime chopped down, John and Oscar reduced to comedy sidekicks, Rey was given the lion’s share of TROS...unlike in ROTJ where everyone had their chance to shine. And...the film was awful. Truly, embarrassingly awful. As was Rey.
I’m sorry...but this film might attract plenty of viewers on opening night but I expect takings to drop dramatically afterwards. We have had Rey the Magnificent, Saviour of the Galaxy quite enough with TROS, thank you.

Your titles are so good! I'm most curious about Lost in Stardust and The Ghosts of Jakku :)
Cheers Malloy!
Lost in Stardust is a fic for a SW novel, Lost Stars, which runs in parallel to a lot of the Original Trilogy (it's a Romeo and Juliet sort of romance with one character joining the Rebellion and one the Empire). It's an early addition to the new canon, and predates things like Rogue One in a way that jars a little to read in 2023. I started playing with the idea of scenes from the book if it meshed with that film and other stories, and so I got "Stardust" from R1.
Ghosts of Jakku is Rey going back to after my Episode IX and searching for Force echoes of the parents who abandoned her (running with the Rey Nobody thing while also playing with an idea for just who her parents might have been). It spun out of a Blade Runner 2049 rewatch (the scenes of K in the junkland orphanage) and stories about the battle on Jakku (Victory's Price my beloved), which left all the wreckage that Rey grew up working on. It's going to be a rather quiet, sad story, but it's speaking to me a lot just now.
