the world is out there, my dear, but we're in here (VLD) This fic is really short & I'm a little bit surprised it gets my #1 spot, to be honest, but every time I look at even just the title I hear the rain. It's an inspired bit of writing, and I have no idea how the hell I did it. (Trivia: Somebody wrote it a comment that was longer than the actual fic and I adore that person.)

these secrets beneath your fingertips (Lockwood) I really enjoyed writing this, but i have no idea how it ended up like this. I think it's known by people as the murder fic? But I really enjoy how much tension there is in the first part, and how meltingly, exhaustedly warm the second part is by contrast. Funnily enough I thought it was just a very tense detective/action sequence but didn't think the content was too bad; then the ladies beta-ing for me said 'Qiqi, what the fuck is this' and a lot of the comments also said 'Qiqi, what the fuck' so apparently I watched too much SVU as a teenager.

Worse (Lockwood) This was close with secrets for #2, but I reread secrets more often so I think that gets the higher spot for enjoyability. I'm extremely proud of this one; I'd always been a bit scared to attempt a George POV but I think I did really well, and I also think I nailed the action here (which VLD friends may remember that I was always a bit too nervous to attempt action!). Trivia here: Worse contains the line ‘Lucy! Please, come on! The place is tearing itself apart!’ and literally everybody who beta-read this fic said 'Hey, that line's a bit redundant. It's such a weird thing for him to say. You should cut it.' Alas, I couldn't cut it as that line is lifted directly from The Hollow Boy (and, funnily enough, Lucy immediately points out in her narration that it's a bit redundant). This little factoid always makes me giggle.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like a Christmas Carol (VLD) Ahhhhhhh I think we knew this had to be on here, right? This fic was so much fun to write, it was like a fever dream. I still can't believe that @sp4c3-0ddity, @rueitae and I co-ordinated and banged out almost 20,000 words of fic in the space of what, five days?? And yes, that five days is from 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we...' to posting. And we all have vastly different writing styles and slightly different characterisation habits, yet somehow we managed to share a single POV and keep it pretty cohesive. At the time I was proud of us, now I'm older and (supposedly) wiser I'm even more proud of us. We did great. @fromageinterrupted likes to say she reads it every year in the holiday season and I do the same (and then just every so often...) because it's a fun fic.

A Handy Excuse (Lockwood) | Sunshine and Phone Lines (VLD) | so it turns out I kind of missed you (VLD) | Here (VLD) OK I'm kind of cheating here, because I couldn't pick a favourite for fifth. - A Handy Excuse was a blast to write -- it was fun having 6 people in the same google doc, all writing out separate parts -- yep, we all wrote in the same doc to put our shame on full display. Which was really cool (I think most of us have the instinct to write in a separate doc and only contribute to the shared doc when we have a finished draft to polish, but we were all very brave and wrote from scratch in the one). I love how the pieces come together; my part was an absolute blast to write (can I admit publicly now that I did Kipps? I got to find out the name of the circus tune!) and the story itself is a really cute read that always makes me smile. - Sunshine and Phone Lines is my one foray into a modern AU and I had a lot of fun writing it. It's probably the one thing that I can throw at somebody with no knowledge of any fandom and say 'hey, I wrote this'. I like how it feels sunny, just the vibes are very positive in the whole piece, and I am an absolute sucker for a bit of dramatic irony. I always end up smiling when I reread this, too. - so it turns out I kind of missed you is another really fun piece. It's short, it's funny, it's sweet -- honestly it's another one I could probably file the serial numbers off of if I wanted. Lance's brother makes me laugh every time I read it, it's another one of those stories that you reread and end up smiling -- though this time it's the big, the-sun-just-came-out type smile. - Here is going to ruin the vibes of all these sunny fluff fics I have in at #5 becuase it is angst. But it's angst with a lot of love and comfort. Evidently I had a thing with water falling when I wrote plangst, because the world... has rain and this one is in a shower. I love how quietly intimate it is, and how it demonstrates how strong the bonds of friendship and care can be. (I feel like it was originally supposed to be a shippy fic but part-way through writing I threw that out the window? It's Gen, really, but I tagged it with the ship so my friends would see it.)

akiyama gets up constantly to both annoy kiryu and to just walk the aisle and spy on other people's business, kiryu's playing the in-flight trivia game the whole way and gets way too into it but will leave you alone. generally fine if you dont mind getting up

goated seat imo, joongi would mind his own business and/or be too busy talking to zhao to bother you and also would be perfectly polite about getting up to let you out. however you would be subjected to whatever the fuck would be happening in front of you

miserable seat, the only way this is tolerable is if either saejima or majima agrees to swap, but saejima's too damn big for the middle seat anyway, and majima probably refuses just for the sake of being difficult. saejima spends the whole flight trying to sleep but can't bc majima keeps bugging the shit out of him, and you'd be stuck in the crossfire. worst seat by far

i personally always need a window seat on a flight (preferably towards the front) or i get sick as hell so im going 7 > 2 > 4 > 1 > 6 > 3 > 5 > 8

I have a random question and I’d love your thoughts. I have seen quite a few fics since the last two eps of svu and oc that have jet and Bruno as a couple. It’s not that I don’t ~like~ the pair per say because a lot of the fic that’s come from authors with them as a pair has been amazing it just seems like a kinda random pairing for me because did we get any inkling of something brewing between those two? I know jet said she loved whelan right before he died which also felt random as hell to me too but yea idk it’s just a couple that has been popping up a lot and I wanted to see if u noticed or had any feelings about it

I personally haven’t minded them together mainly because most of the fics they appear in combines both squads and gets eo in the same room which is the shit I really love to see lol but them as a stand alone I’m more like 🤷🏻‍♀️ eh idk if I feel strongly one way or the other. Just an observation!

So the thing is I don't know if Bruno and Jet have had any meaningful interaction, but they don't need to, you know? Shipping characters who have never even appeared on screen together is a time honored tradition, and one I heartily endorse. It's taking the "what ifs" of shipping to their logical conclusion, where we can "what if" about anyone. And given Bruno's sense of humor and his and Jet's similar dark streaks it seems like they would make an interesting pair, and it's a lot of fun to play with.

I do think Jet saying she loved Whelan was weird, it felt very out of left field, bc that wasn't fans spinning conjecture that was canon randomly saying she loved him, where canon had before that moment only really toyed with a flirtation/wary affection between them, and to jump to love, for a franchise that is so hesitant to say the word love out loud, just felt very "wait what?" to me, but everything about Whelan's exit felt that way to me lmao

So really my opinion on Jet and Bruno is I always think it's really cool when fic writers can build backstories and relationships for characters who haven't been put together in canon, bc it's really creative and fun and leaning into the transformative part of transformative fiction, which is such an important feature of what we're doing here. Transformative fandom (taking something and making it new, making it our own, finding joy in creation) vs curative fandom (acquiring all the things, be that merch or trivia, knowing canon inside and out/preserving canon being the most important thing) is a really interesting dichotomy that I think about a lot. Like what are we doing here? Does it have to be one or the other? Can we use deeply curated knowledge of the text to transform it more holistically? Is a transformation that's less informed by the text less valid? Does it matter?

Why Discovering a Podcast You Love Is Such A Dopamine Rush

Have you ever gone to the supermarket for a product — like, say, jelly — and discovered, to your horror, that the choices seem overwhelming because there are too many of them?

There’s peach, strawberry, blackberry, chokeberry, high bush grape, rhubarb crisp, pineapple habanero, and raspberry horseradish. It’s so difficult to choose.

Despite the superabundance of podcasts, it is still gratifying to find a podcast that enthralls you.

Have you ever had that feeling? 

Typically, podcast superfans — like me — will find a podcast producing episodes for years. You listen to an episode because a podcast review website, such as Ear Worthy, Bingeworthy, Great Pods, or a friend recommended it. That first episode captivates you. You search your podcast app, like Pocket Casts, and find that podcast’s archive. To your utter delight, the podcast has 500, 1,000 or more episodes. 

There is a tremendous dopamine release as you comprehend the hours of listening pleasure ahead of you as you dive into that podcast’s archives.

Let’s do science — for my benefit — and ask: What is dopamine? According to Harvard Medical School, dopamine is most notably involved in helping us feel pleasure as part of the brain’s reward system. Sex, shopping, smelling cookies, baking in the oven — all these things can trigger dopamine release, or a “dopamine rush.”

Let me give you a personal example. I love trivia. I watch Jeopardy almost every night and like to believe I could beat Ken Jennings if, of course, I could use Google to find the answers. 

Here’s a sample of recent episodes: June 13: Music (Sax Solos), Postage Stamps, Quantities (Quickfire), and Pandas  May 16: Music (Connections), Printing, Flowers (Quickfire), and Transport.

Now, I can’t wait for my Friday trivia fix every week, and I dive into the podcast’s archives during the week when I need a trivia cocktail.

One of podcasting’s strengths is the availability of its content. When my favorite sitcom, Superstore, finished its six-year run on NBC, it filmed and broadcast 113 episodes. 

That thickness of content enables me to relax and revel in the lush archives with an early episode such as The Silver Medalists Edition. In the episode, Molanphy explains that “While having a №1 song can define an artist’s career, there’s far less glory in finishing one spot shy of the top slot. Yet some №2 hits have gone on to become classics, such as Shop Around by the Miracles; We Got the Beat by the Go-Gos; and Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson.”

After listening to Steve’s riveting life story and his endless tales of famous people he’s met or interviewed on his podcast, I dove into a few episodes. I found that Steve has interviewed 63 members of the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame. I was hooked. I’ve listened to his recent episodes with actor Danny Pino from TV’s Cold Case, Mayan MC, The Shield, and Law & Order SVU, and actor Penelope Ann Miller, who just played Nancy Reagan in the recently released film Reagan. 

That’s podcasting. It’s true that often, the greatest weakness is also the greatest strength. In the case of podcasting, its greatest weakness is its overflowing, overstuffed, and ridiculous number of podcasts and corresponding content. And that is also its greatest strength. Because when a listener finds a podcast they love, they often have anywhere from a few hundred to more than 1,000 episodes to enjoy.

I still listen to archived episodes of The Nutrition Diva and harvest nuggets of wisdom on eating healthy and smart. It’s my fortress of solitude.

Last Show: I'm gonna assume this means the last show I finished but uh, I can't actually remember? Although I watched what Netflix has of Demon Slayer last weekend and the beginning if this week (still need to watch season 2, which isn't on there).

Currently Watching: Too many shows honestly. Though a few include Poldark, Law and Order: SVU, Peaky Blinders, and a few more anime. I'm also in the middle of a couple rewatches. In my defense some of these are heavy so I can't watch too many episodes in a row. Also I get bored of one genre sometimes and pick another.

Currently Reading: Technically nothing aside from fanfics, but I am trying to start what I think is the fourth book in the Miss Peregrine's Children series? I'd I remember correctly? Be the third. It's been a while. Uni is stressful. I did just finish an audiobook of The Chamber of Secrets too (first time reading/listening to the books, having only seen the movies, enjoying them so far).

Current Obsession: I suppose I'm pretty hyped about Demon Slayer rn, but I'm also randomly back on my Harry Potter bs (because I'm listening to the books and almost done with a rewatch of the movies) so there you go. Non-fandom-wise, I'm doing a lot of loom knitting😁

sonny carisi x reader

a/n: this is a short little self-indulgent drabble. my family had a health scare today, and i just needed something to help get my mind off of it. everyone is okay, but i feel much better now after writing for my favorite stringbean.

You were sleeping in the uncomfortable wooden hospital chairs, old blue padding doing nothing but numb your backside. Your elbow had already slipped off the arm three times, waking you from your light slumber.

The nurse had kicked you out of your mother’s hospital room three hours ago, so you relocated to the waiting room. Considering it was eleven o'clock, there weren’t too many people in your presence. 

Before your elbow slipped for the fourth time tonight, you readjusted yourself to face the entrance. You started to close your eyes when you heard the automatic doors whoosh open, your favorite gangly detective walking over to you. You straightened yourself up, rolling your ankles as he sat next to you.

“Sonny, What are you doing here? How did you,” 

“Liv told me. I was worried about you.” His cheeks tinted the slightest shade of red, but he ducked his head before they could get worse. “We all were. You ran out of the squad room like a chicken with it’s head cut off.”

You let out a small chuckle, still somewhat aware of your surroundings. Leave it to Carisi to make you laugh despite the less than ideal circumstances.

“Yeah well, I didn’t really know how to react at that moment. I just needed to get here.”

“How’s she doing?”

You sighed, uncrossing your left leg to swing the right one over. “She’s doing okay for having a heart attack. They said it could have been worse, but it was still bad enough that she passed out from the pain.”

Your mother was the healthiest person you knew. She took care of herself, worked out six days a week, and was always in tune to her body. The last person you expected to have a heart problem was her.

“Did you get to talk to her at all?”

You shook your head. “Only for a few minutes. She’s really tired, they want her to rest up. They said she’ll be better tomorrow.”

“So she’s going to be okay?” He asked, a wrinkle forming between his eyebrows. He truly cared about her health and wellbeing. Hell, he cared about anyone that you cared for.

A small smile rested on your face. “Yeah, she’s gonna be okay.”

He matched the expression on his own face before standing and extending a hand to you. “In that case, it’s time for you to go home and get some rest.”

“No, I can’t leave her here all by herself. I’ll be fine here, the vending machine is down the hall and I’ll just put two chairs together to sleep.”

“Y/n, she’s got nurses and doctors monitoring her all night. You can come back first thing in the morning. C’mon, you’ll feel better sleeping in your own bed.”

His left right hand was still extended to you, and you accepted it with a sigh. “Fine.”

He helped you stand up and led you out of the hospital, pointing to where he parked the squad car. 

“Carisi, would you mind if we walked? I just want to clear my head, get some fresh air after spending the whole day in there. It’s only ten minutes.”

“ ‘Course I don’t mind. C’mon.” He nodded his head to the right, knowing which way led to your apartment. 

You’d been at SVU for three years now, joining the squad a few short months after Carisi. As the two newbies, you guys stuck together and helped each other navigate the world of special victims. It was rough, and could be pretty disturbing at times, but you had each other. And it really made a difference.

You felt a weight on your shoulders, followed by a warmth spreading down your back. Sonny had draped his jacket over you, and you noticed he had on a quarter zip to keep him warm. He looked down at you, a little smile on his face, and you thanked him with a nod.

You walked in a comfortable silence for two blocks, no need for conversation to fill the air. The two of you talked enough at work, Rollins and Fin regularly reminding the two of you to pipe down. You could usually control yourself after a reminder, but Sonny and his Staten Island accent couldn’t keep quiet longer than five minutes.

Until tonight. It was nice to be around him without having to worry about a case, finding evidence, or witnesses. You would accompany him to Amanda’s house most times to help her out with the girls while he cooked, and sometimes you guys would stumble down to the bar by his house for Saturday night trivia. It was always so easy with Carisi, like you’d known him your whole life.

Without really thinking about it, you looped your arm through his and rested your head on his shoulder as you were about halfway to your apartment. You felt his arm tense the slightest, before he let out a breath and relaxed again. 

With his coat around your shoulders, and your arm linked with his, you were warmer than you’d ever felt in your whole life.

You stayed linked together until you reached your building, and he offered to walk you up. You got off at the fourth floor and made it about halfway down the hall when you saw a brown bag at your door. 

“What’s this?” You picked it up, and could faintly smell your favorite chinese food order. 

“Oh, I ordered you some food once I left the precinct. I figured you hadn’t eaten, and knew you’d be too tired to cook. Or you wouldn’t have any food to cook with.”

He was right about both of those things. “You didn’t have to do that, but thank you. I definitely would’ve eaten swedish fish and water for dinner.” He let out a laugh and raised his hands, knowing he was right.

“Alright, get some sleep y/n. I’ll call you tomorrow to check in and see if you need anything.”

You nodded and leaned against your door. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do any of this, but I’m glad you did. It means a lot.”

He had a tight lipped smile while stuffing his hands in his pockets. “Don’t mention it. You’d do the same for me.”

You took a second to look, really look at the man standing in front of you. He was amazing, and the sweetest person you’d ever met. And you wanted him to know.

Taking a step closer to him, you tilted your head up and pressed a light kiss to his cheek. His skin was warm, and he was so close to you. It took everything in you not to bury your head in his shoulder.

You pulled away, feeling your cheeks grow warm at your action. His own cheeks turned rosy red, and he couldn’t wipe the small off his face.

“I know this is the most inappropriate time to say this, but I really like you. I mean, I more than really like you.”

You were the one to smile now, as he reached out between you, hoping you would hold his hand. You wasted no time in grasping it, twining your fingers with his own. “I more than really like you too.” You quietly admitted, and watched his smile grow. God, was he handsome.

“Once this is all settled and back to normal, would you like to go on a date with me?”

You hid your mouth behind your free fist, your growing smile starting to cause pain in your cheeks. “I would love to, Sonny.”

“Good. Great.” You let out a laugh at his stammering reaction, which quickly turned into a yawn. “Alright, enough excitement for one day. Go eat and get some sleep. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

“Okay. Goodnight, Sonny.” He gave your hand a squeeze before letting it go. “ ‘Night y/n.”

He waited until you got into your apartment and he heard you lock the door before he left. You put your keys and food on the counter, and braced yourself on the stone. Did that just happen?

You brushed your fingers across your lips, remembering how soft his skin was underneath you, the smiling ache in your cheeks returning.

Oh yes, that did happen.
