Greetings Friends, I was so very lucky that almost 6 years ago being part of an expedition cruise organised by the by the Oceanwide Expedition Group to the North Pole. The Adventure started in Longyearbyen the town closest to the Pole. Here the visual impressions I've got touring this part of the world in June 2017 Possible medieval discoveries of Svalbard by Vikings or PomorsSome scholars believe the Vikings, who were active in the area of Svalbard during the Middle Ages, were the first to discover it. Starting in the 1800s, Norwegian historians began asserting that Vikings discovered the region as early as 1194. They base this claim on maps and annals that list a place called Svalbarði (the basis for the name Svalbard, which translates to “cold rim”) roughly a four-day sail from Iceland. No physical remains have been found, however, that support this claim. Russian historians, on the other hand, believe the Pomors may have landed at Svalbard back in the 1400s. In exactly one year, Superman will be released in theaters and James Gunn took to social media to unveil the official logo.
Gunn shared on Instagram the Superman logo for the movie starring David Corenswet.
“In exactly one year Superman opens all over the world,” the filmmaker posted.
DC fans had already gotten a glimpse of the Superman emblem when a photo of Corenswet donning the superhero costume was shared online.

Superman is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025, with the cast also including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The ensemble includes Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion.
Gunn has assured DC fans that Superman is not an origin story and instead will pick up Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. The character is described as the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Earlier this year, Gunn teased the film as production was underway in Norway.
“We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard], which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude,” Gunn told Svalbardposten (via VG). “We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places.”
He continued, “First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

На Шпицбергене задержали российского туриста, подозреваемого в первом в истории архипелага ограблении банка Власти архипелага Шпицберген задержали на четыре недели 29-летнего российского туриста, которо��о подозревают в ограблении местного банка. Об этом 22 декабря сообщил сайт губернатора Лонгйира, населенного пункта, где произошло ограбление. Утром 21 декабря грабитель зашел в Sparebank1 и угрожая винтовкой Маузера забрал около 70 тыс. норвежских крон (около $8 тыс). Винтовку турист арендовал в Лонгйире. Его задержали в тот же день, а затем доставили в город Тромсе на материке. Как сообщило издание Svalbardposten, во время происшествия в банке находились три сотрудника, которые не пострадали. Подозреваемого задержали через полчаса после нападения. The Local пишет, что это было первое в истории ограбление банка на Шпицбергене. В Лонгйире живет около 2 тыс. человек, многие из которых лично знают друг друга. Одним из немногих способов покинуть архипелаг является аэропорт Свальбард.

O avalanşă a lovit marţi o zonă rezidenţială din principala aşezare de pe Arhipelagul Svalbard, un teritoriu insular în Oceanul Arctic, situat la 600 de kilometri de coastele Norvegiei, fără a fi semnalate victime sau pagube materiale, relatează DPA. Cel puţin două clădiri cu şase etaje din localitatea Longyearbyen au fost afectate de avalanşa care a măturat mai multe maşini şi snowmobile, a informat cotidianul Svalbardposten. Kjerstin Askholt, guvernatoarea arhipelagului Svalbard, a dispus evacuarea clădirilor din apropiere. Zona afectată de avalanşă se află la poalele muntelui Sukkertoppen, în apropierea unei alte zone afectate de acelaşi fenomen natural în decembrie 2015, atunci când două persoane şi-au pierdut viaţa după ce avalanşa a lovit mai multe clădiri. Arhipelagul este administrat de Norvegia şi are o populaţie de circa 2.700 locuitori.

What brought Willem Barentsz to Spitsbergen, later SvalbardBarentsz discovered Spitsbergen by accident during his famous third voyage, the purpose of which was to find a sea route to China. This route became known as the Northeast Passage. What Barentsz found instead was Bjørnøya, or Bear Island, the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, in June of 1596. A week later, he discovered the northwestern coast of the largest island, Spitsbergen. The Rush for Whale Oil In 1607, when Englishman Henry Hudson announced that the waters around Svalbard were full of bowhead whales, whalers flocked to the islands in search of lucrative whale oil. Whale hunters and seamen from the Netherlands, England, Spain, France, Germany and Denmark nearly emptied the sea of its whale population through the 1600s. During this period, Svalbard and its surroundings were marked as “terra nullius”, meaning that it was considered a no-man’s-land that belonged to no jurisdiction or country, free for all. That didn’t stop the two main whaling nations, the Dutch and the English, from carving up the whaling waters amongst themselves. It was agreed the English would hunt south of the Magdalenefjord, while the Dutch hunted the north-western corner of Spitsbergen. Arctic expeditions to Svalbard, i.e., Spitsbergen then and nowSvalbard has been the starting point for many expeditions. Some of these were historical voyages meant to reach the North Pole. Nowadays polar enthusiasts travel to Svalbard to see glaciers, tundra, and exotic wildlife. In Virgohamna, on the island of Danskøya, you can see the remains of several historic expeditions that used this remote bay as their basecamp. The most famous of these expeditions is that of Salomon Andrée, from 1897, the artifacts of which can still be viewed there. Greetings Friends, I was so very lucky that almost 6 years ago being part of an expedition cruise organised by the by the Oceanwide Expedition Group to the North Pole. The Adventure started in Longyearbyen the town closest to the Pole. Here the visual impressions I've got touring this part of the world in June 2017. Possible medieval discoveries of Svalbard by Vikings or PomorsSome scholars believe the Vikings, who were active in the area of Svalbard during the Middle Ages, were the first to discover it. Starting in the 1800s, Norwegian historians began asserting that Vikings discovered the region as early as 1194. They base this claim on maps and annals that list a place called Svalbarði (the basis for the name Svalbard, which translates to “cold rim”) roughly a four-day sail from Iceland. No physical remains have been found, however, that support this claim. Russian historians, on the other hand, believe the Pomors may have landed at Svalbard back in the 1400s.
