voice actors in the reboot...
The only thing I miss in the Fruits Basket reboot is Akio Suyama voicing Hatsuharu. Suyama had such a distinct, fun voice he brought so much life to Hatsuharu. The new voice is just bland in comparison.
Suyama is apparently 50 years old now though so he probably wouldn’t have convincingly voiced a teenager this time around. It’s too bad, you will be missed as Hatsuharu, Suyama. <3

Fruits Basket - Old vs New (Take One)
I watched both in Japanese (with subs). I’m just going to be stating a few differences between the old and new version, which I prefer, the pros/cons, etc.
For reference, I’m using this post
No, I didn’t watch this series dubbed. The site I use doesn’t have dubs. I know the Funimation dub is really good, but I didn’t watch it. I know they kept the same guy as Kyo though. As much as I’m for reprising roles, I’m kind of disappointed that they didn’t hire someone new. It would lead to a good breakout role since the fanbase is already there and everything, but again, as if the Japanese version did that (they hired people they knew were already popular or semi-popular).
Art?
Let’s be real, they really jacked these guys up since the 2001 version. All of a sudden, they’re all toned and stuff. I know anime has become more idyllic with body types since decades ago, but still... I’m supposed to be their age. I have no muscle.
In the 2001 version, their eyes take up a good 50% of their face. They toned it down. They changed a good lot of the colour palette and even the colour of Yuki’s hair. It’s amazing to see how far animation has come, but the 2001 version sure has its charms. You can’t really say for sure who did what better.
Studios:
2001: Studio Deen
2019: TMS Entertainment
Music (OP and ED)?
Easy. I prefer the new ones. The old ones might be nostalgic, but the new ones fit more towards today’s music tastes. I know there are complaints that the new ones are too slow, but I happen to like them.
Which Seiyuu do I prefer?
Tooru Honda: Yui Horie (1976) | Manaka Iwami (1998)
I don’t prefer either. I’ll be honest, they sound vocally similar. Unlike the other characters, I think they went with someone who would fill the previous role as needed.
Kyo Souma: Tomokazu Seki (1972) | Yuuma Uchida (1992)
I think this one kind of went by a landslide. I find Yuuma’s voice to be far more natural and fitting of Kyo. I’m not sure what else I need to say, but it wasn’t that Seki didn’t do a good job, it’s that Yuuma’s voice fits the role really well.
Yuki Souma: Aya Hisakawa (1968) | Nobunaga Shimazaki (1988)
I know practically everyone’s gonna disagree with this, but I said what I said. I prefer Hisakawa’s voice because it still fit Yuki’s character. It was a pretty close match, but I found that her voice was so majestic and prince-like, and I actually liked it the first time I heard it. She’s a really talented voice actress. Shimazaki, on the other hand, is doing a good job, but I don’t prefer it. Hisakawa’s beautiful voice matches the feminine prince character.
Update: Both are incredibly good.
Shigure Souma: Ryotaro Okiayu (1969) | Yuuichi Nakamura (1980)
I decided this one so fast. Yuuichi Nakamura is cool and all, but Ryotaro’s voice fit perfectly. It’s so distinct and fits the characteristics.
Momiji Souma: Ayaka Saitou (1988) | Megumi Han (1989)
When Ayaka Saitou was cast in the original, she was only 13. This led to her voice being very youthful and perfect for a kid. Megumi Han is already an adult, and even though she has the knack for voicing boys, I think there’s a certain aspect that can’t be mirrored unless you’re of that age.
Hatsuharu Souma: Akio Suyama (1968) | Makoto Furukawa (1989)
I know he hasn’t really appeared yet, but this is my guess.
Kagura Souma: Kotono Mitsuishi (1967) | Rie Kugimiya (1979)
I think Rie Kugimiya has played so many tsunderes and violent characters now that it all kind of just mushed together. Kotono Mitsuishi’s cute voice was cute, and her violent voice was kind of badass.
Saki Hanajima: Reiko Yasuhara (1969) | Satomi Sato (1986)
Her voice fits the character perfectly for me. Yasuhara’s voice was the absolute perfect fit. Satomi Sato is pretty good but doesn’t quite fit as well.
Arisa Uotani: Yuka Imai (1970) | Atsumi Tanezaki (1990)
I feel like her voice is a bit more down-to-earth. It’s the slightest bit more feminine. This one was really, really close.
Ayame Souma: Mitsuru Miyamoto (1958) | Takahiro Sakurai (1974)
Knowing what Sakurai’s voice is like (dude, he’s in a lot of stuff), I think I like his voice for the character more. Plus, he has a pretty cool voice.
Hatori Souma: Kazuhiko Inoue (1954) | Kazuyuki Okitsu (1980)
No matter how hard Okitsu tries, Kazuhiko Inoue has one of the coolest voices ever. There is no contest. That’s just the fact.
Akito Souma: Wakaba Murasaki (1982) | Maaya Sakamoto (1980)
Biased? Absolutely. My only complaint is that Maaya Sakamoto’s casting reveals a huge plot point and kind of spoils it.
Kyouka Honda: Keiko Yasuhara (1969) | Miyuki Sawashiro (1985)
I am 110% biased. Come on. Maaya Sakamoto and Miyuki Sawashiro in one anime that isn’t Canaan? Of course, I’m picking them. There is no contest.
Overall Thoughts?
I just finished the 2001 anime, and it was great.
I have some complaints about the art, but I’m sure it’ll be better this time around. Nothing wasn’t really outstandingly bad with it though. The art has changed, but I can’t say which really did it better yet.
The music is much better this time around, but I haven’t gotten a chance to really feel the score out yet.
Voice-wise, I guess it’s because I watched 26 episodes with the original cast. Maybe these opinions will change over time.
Fruits Basket is a classic, and I’m glad to see it being remade. So far, it’s doing really well.
