This summer I’m shifting towards eating primarily unprocessed, seasonal meals to help meet my goals of losing weight and simultaneously reducing my environmental impact. So I added this #grocery page (inspired by @cardigansandchamomile 💚) to my bullet journal to track what groceries we buy this month—hopefully it’ll have enough space! You could use a page like this for planning too once you know what your grocery staples are. . Also, today is #WorldEnvironmentDay! 🌏🌱 This year, the theme is #BeatPlasticPollution. Single-use plastic like food packaging is a huge problem worldwide—very little of it is actually recycled (or even recyclable), and it often ends up in our oceans and lakes. According to @unenvironment, we’ve produced more plastic in just the last decade than we have in the last century, and 50% of the plastic we use is disposable/single-use. 😔 So I’m working on eliminating as much plastic packaging from my life as possible by shifting to reusable or package-free options wherever I can. For groceries, I bought these reusable cloth bags by @simple_ecology to replace those flimsy plastic produce bags, and I love them! ☺️They work great for #bulkfoods as well. (Not an ad, I just really like these bags!) . I am passionate about sustainability in style and believe that knowledge gives us the power to affect change by making better decisions. I am concerned about heavy metals in conventional dyes, which penetrate the clothing we wear over our skin because it can off gas into our bodies as our vulnerable glands sweat. Lead, cadmium and many other hazardous ingredients are also in conventional cosmetics. Natural dyes, derived from plants, are free from heavy metals and future focused companies like @beautycounter not only excludes these dangerous ingredients but continues to test their products for trace amounts. At my natural dyeing class this week I mentioned a great BeautyCounter story while talking about our rose petal dye bath. Trace phthalates were turning up in a BeautyCounter product featuring rose petals; After much investigation it was determined that the bags the petals were being harvested into were plastic, and condensation in the heat caused the leaching chemicals.
