They create the conditions for us as consumers, to consume. They PUSH us to consume, knowing damn well that recycling is a lie, knowing we are creatures of comfort and will buy buy buy, and one day they will start pulling crap like this on us.
In February my gym put in new water fountains with purification filters on it. It keeps count of how many plastic water bottles have been saved. Everyone uses reusable bottles to do refills. Today I noticed, as of February, one fountain alone had the count over 10,000. If I would have thought I would have made a post like this I would have went to see the count on the other one.
So there are practicle solutions. They just don't want you to use them. They want this. Oh and to save a post I'll throw this 👇 in too.

Since I was a child I always loved the idea of living in a little cabin in the woods. Birds greet you in the morning, you boil water over the fire, smell the moss, maybe you catch a glimpse of what you think could have maybe been a faerie?! But as I grew older I was taught that magic isn’t real, that cabin in the woods isn’t reality and that there isn’t that much green in my world.
I started working the jobs I was given and grinding, trying to climb those ladders. I’ve gone from the “garbage girl” to “manager” and something was always lacking. That’s when I decided to take a journey into the past. I decided to start my own homesteading expedition, in the city. I may not get my cabin in the woods but I am going to ensure I have my little patch of green. Here is what I have found helpful to start out with so far:

Figure out what you want to cut down on financially, transitioning to homesteading is smoothest when you don’t have huge bills to cover. I suggest starting with streaming services, cable, phone bills, internet usage and any other monthly plans.
 While you’re doing your planning, you’ll still need to shop and feed yourself. Start looking for reusable items to replace things you consistently go to the store for. Parchment paper, baking sheets, paper plates etc. Finish using and replace as many single use items as possible. Bonus if they don’t use electricity (ex: hand grinder for coffee, non electric kettle etc). If you have a local market or farm stands nearby, get to know them and their prices. You may be shocked to discover a ton of savings and good info about the growing climate.
This one sounds odd but I feel like it is a big step in moving from a very hands off technology based lifestyle to one that is more self sufficient – take time to reflect “spiritually” (whatever that is for you) and address any addictions or negative traits that revolve around your industrial upbringing. For me the biggest are: overworking myself, mindlessly scrolling the phone, caffeine and refined sugar. This is the hardest part of the entire journey because it involves creating a habit that goes against societal norms/what is exceptionally easy to access and relies on setting boundaries for myself. Addiction isn’t easy that is for sure!
Gather information about the things you are most interested in. For me, that is growing my own veggies and alternative herbal remedies. The city I live in does not allow livestock or chickens, but there are tons of cities in Canada that do! Shelter building, water purification, fire starting and tying knots are always interesting research topics. Pinterest is also fairly handy for this stuff, funny enough! Search “survival tips” and you’ll find quite a bit on there, as well as the “homesteading” tag. The library is a great resource for herbal remedies, medicinal, all sorts of books about psychology etc. Spend some time researching things you believe will help, and stuff that gets you excited, too!
Set some realistic goals and work towards those projects. For example, I had very low funds so I started growing herbs in the window. Chives, green onion, parsley and mint all grow fairly quickly and can be kept through winter if properly maintained. Pick something you use a lot or do a lot – let’s say cleaning; and slowly swap all of your products to home made solutions.
Lastly, because these are just starter tips, find some people with similar interests. If you aren’t able to connect locally (check your cities Reddit board for keywords like garden or the cities website for local greenhouses) there are a number of groups online that promote this kind of lifestyle. I’m sure if you’ve found this post though, you are well aware. But if not there are tons of blogs under “homesteading” or “natural solutions”.
Although I am nowhere close to the “end goal” I imagined and haven’t become completely self sustainable; I can definitely say I am a lot happier, feeling more positive about the future and have no fear as compared to where I started. I think if this journey is all for “nothing”, at least I have some peace.

Have a Long-Term Water Storage Plan for Emergencies:
Water is earth's most valuable resource. It is the essential element to survival. All living things need it to survive. But in the near future, there may not be enough to sustain life on our planet.
AMOUNT TO STORE:
Storing and knowing how to gather and decontaminate water is necessary in every emergency plan and emergency supplies kit. It is said that the average person can survive only three (3) days without water. Following a disaster, clean drinking water may not be available. Regular water sources could be cut-off or compromised through contamination. If evacuating, water sources will take on many undesireable and contaminated forms. Building a supply of water is only the beginning of preparing for an emergency. After the initial supply is gone, knowing how to collect and decontaminate subsequent supplies is crucial. The search for potable (drinkable) water sources should always be a major priority. Considering the amount of water a person uses in one day under normal conditions, it's no wonder that water storage should be a priority for emergency situations. Calculate minimum water storage amounts to be 1 gallon of water [drinking (32 ounces) and sanitation] per day per person for a minimum of 3 days. More is better. Children, nursing mothers and sick people may need more water. Water use may increase for a medical emergency and warm weather climates and can double in very hot temperatures. Additional water must be considered in emergency water storage plans for Pets and to re-hydrate dehydrated foods. A mimimum of 32 ounces of drinking water per day, per person, should be calculated in the water storage plan. If the local water supply or well is contaminated, turn off the water supply to the residence/business.
COLLECTION / SOURCES:
When a working faucet is not available, consider these options. Filtering and Purification methods should always be applied.
Replenishable Water Sources should always be sought after
Residence / Office: Hot Water Heater, Toilet, Ice Trays, Bath Tub, Hot Tub, Dehumidifier, Sink, Garden Hose. At the very first alert of a serious Emergency, fill all of these water reservoirs then turn off the public water supply to prevent internal water storage contamination from the outside. Try to prevent contamination of water sources but ALWAYS treat and filter water before use.
Community: swimming pools, exterior spigots on houses and office buildings (get a Sillcock Key), water drainage systems, pot holes.
Undrinkable: While not the ideal solution for drinking water, in a crisis situation, nearly any water can be distilled and filtered to make drinkable (potable) water, even Urine and Salt Water. Read about Uses for Urine.
Nature: Ocean, lakes, ponds, streams, puddles, some plant leaves, vines, Solar Still, Plant Transpiration Bag, Rain Catching, Fog Catching, Morning Dew Collection from surfaces by soaking up with rags.
PURIFYING:
Generally, any type of water can be made drinkable (Potable) with the correct method to filter and purify it. Read Methods to Purify Water
STORAGE METHODS:
Commercially bottled water is the safest and most reliable emergency water supply
Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open until you need to use it
Observe the expiration or "use by" date (about 18 months shelf life)
Personal water containers require special considerations
Do not use glass containers because they can break and are heavy
Use food grade water storage containers from surplus or camping supplies stores
If reusing commercial drink containers
Use 2-liter plastic soft drink bottles – not plastic jugs or cardboard containers
Do Not Use containers that have had milk or fruit juice in them
Before use, thoroughly clean containers with dishwashing soap & water & rinse completely
Sanitize: add a solution of 1 teaspoon of non-scented liquid household bleach to a quart of water
Swish sanitizing solution in the container so that it touches all surfaces
After sanitizing, thoroughly rinse out the sanitizing solution with clean water
Fill container to the top with regular tap water*
Label the container with a 6-month "use by" date and Replace the water every six (6) months
Store all water in a cool, dark place
Reusing Water: Consider water as a very valuable resource. Don't waste the drinking water, that has expired, by dumping it down the drain. Just because it should not be used for internal consumption, reuse it for washing the body, clothes or dishes, flushing the toilet, watering the garden, filling the car radiator or anything else that uses water. Always think about alternate uses for anything you are about to throw away.
