Christmas Eve (stuck) in the Lab
Chapters 1-7/10ish
Summary: Dr. John Smith and Rose Tyler both work at the Natural History Museum in London, he as a scientist in the labs, and she as a salesgirl in the gift shop. They are only friends, but the upcoming staff Christmas party promises developments theyâve both been longing for. But John and Rose end up stuck with Martha, Donna and Jack in the laboratory, and shenanigans ensue: decontamination showers, cocktails in beakers, a game of truth-or-dare and a Secret Santa rigged by meddling friends.

Prologue - May
Rose got off the bus in South Kensington and nearly ran into a passerby.
âRose?â
âShareen?â She barely recognized her old friend, she looked so grown-up with her cinched trench coat and laptop bag. âHow are you?â
âIâm great. Iâm on my way to university. Last exam of the semester, and then graduation.â She crossed her fingers with a hopeful smile.
âWow. Congratulations.â
âThanks. You?â
âOh, Iâve a job interview.â
One look at Roseâs jeans and hoodie told Shareen the kind of job it might be.
Rose lowered her head and bunched her sleeves over her hands.
You were right about Jimmy, Rose wanted to say, I shouldnât have chosen him over my friends.
âWe should do something, sometime,â Shareen said, her smile conveyed pity rather than affection.
Rose nodded, though she knew it wouldnât happen. They wished each other good luck and went in opposite directions.
As soon as she had her back to Shareen, she lost her smile. That couldâve been me too, she thought. She shook her head; nah, I wasnât made for university.
Around the corner, the Natural History Museum loomed, cathedral-like, with its two towers framing the main hall and the large arch above the entrance. On the East and West wings, two storeys of Romanesque windows reflected the grey sky. Lions, bats, wolves and pterodactyls carved in stone looked down at her from their perches on the facade.
Rose avoided their stony glares.
She was interviewing to work in the gift shop, no reason to feel intimidated by this great institution.
She took a deep breath, then entered the Museum.
In Hintze hall, the skeleton of a blue whale hung from the ceiling, suspended mid-swim, gigantic yet tranquil. Underneath, groups of school children walked single file, bumping into each other, distracted by the grandiose hall. Clusters of visitors, map in hand, planned their visit and photographed each other.
Something about the echo of footsteps and chatter, and the way sunlight streamed through the glass roof took her right back to her childhood. Even then, she knew Jackie brought her here so often because it was free. They would spend hours here in winter, leaving the flat unheated to save on electricity. But she didnât care, she loved it.
Tears pricked her eyes as she remembered how curious and full of wonder she used to be as a child. She longed to be that girl again.
Oh, but she really wanted to get this job now.
â
Standing in a corner of the gift shop, Lilian, the manager, gave Roseâs resume a cursory look.
âBand manager? For three years?â
âYes, I booked gigs in clubs, oversaw the budget of the tours, and managed the promotional merchandise.â
And did all the laundry and the cooking and the cleaning, turned a blind eye to his drugs and alcohol use, and believed him when he said the other girls didnât mean anything to him.Â
Three years of living for someone elseâs dreams.
âYour last job was at Henrickâs. Only six months. Why did you stop working there?â
Rose mimed an explosion.
To be honest, she might have blown up the place herself if someone else hadnât beat her to it. Bunch of snobs, they were.
âOh, right.â Lilian laughed and placed a check mark on her form. âNow letâs see your customer service skills.â
Unbeknownst to Rose, the museum, a centuries-old, respected institution dedicated to science was home to one messy-haired, Converse-wearing, chaotic genius who loved a little shop.
âOh no, not him,â Lilian said, but too late, Rose was already walking toward him with a big smile on.
âHelloââ she eyed the badge attached to the breast pocket of his lab coatâ âDoctor. How may I help you today?â
He was scanning a display of rubber figurines. He grabbed two miniatures of prehistoric mammals.
âTheyâre two for one,â she tried.
âWhat was the smilodon doing on the territory of the diprotodon?â
He moved the tiger-like figurine toward the bear-like one. He stared at them as if they would talk to him and reveal their secrets.
Rose bit her thumbnail. Did he really expect an answer? Was this part of the interview?
âMaybe he was looking for food?â she ventured.
âKilometres away from his home?â
âIâd walk miles for the best chips.â
He grinned and looked at her, properly, for the first time. There wasnât a trace of mockery in his smile, only genuine delight. She found herself smiling back.
Suddenly, he gasped.
âYes! Chips!â
He spun on his heels and rushed out of the shop.
Lilian patted Rose on the shoulder. âI donât know how you did that, but youâre hired.â
âI think I just let him just steal those figurines.â
âDonât worry, Iâll put it on his tab.â
Rose sighed with relief and thanked Lilian.
âSo, who was that?â
âDoctor John Smith, heâs the research leader at the Ancient DNA lab. The youngest one in the labâs history, Iâm told, hired before heâd even finished his doctorate.â
âReally? Heâs a nutter.â
âOh yeah, but harmless overall.â
â
Over the months following Roseâs hiring, the frequency of the Doctorâs visits to the shop increased. Her coworkers even began to tease her about it.
He would show up and babble about multiplex sequencing of mitochondrial genomes or rant about sample degradation of human remains in the field.
Rose didnât understand everything but got a kick out of his wild gesticulation and experiments with items from the shop. She would ask him questions, and sometimes they would be the right ones to help him out.
Although she was becoming fast friends with many museum employees, of all her new acquaintances, the Doctor was her favourite.
She didnât know him â not really. But what she knew, she liked. She liked the way he treated everyone with respect, from the janitors to the curators. Although he had his moments of bad mood and anger, he found joy in every little thing. It was contagious. They spurred each other on, it seemed. They raced wind-up toys from the shop after hours, gave silly names to specimens in the exhibitions, pranked the tour guides and hid treats for the kids staying overnight for Dino-snores. But thatâs the thing, they only ever saw each other at the museum. The closest thing to a date they had was attending the same lecture one night in November. His hand had brushed hers on the armrest.
She would be lying if she said she wasnât disappointed on days he didnât show up. But Rose refused to read more into his behaviour than there was. She had made that mistake before, seeing love where it wasnât, and stayed in an unhealthy relationship. So, until proven otherwise, the Doctor was just an eccentric bloke who came to her when he was bored or stuck.

Cafe Anticene, Tokyo 3 - hotel stories
On the morning of the third day they start walking south east again. With the intention of approaching the safe house from the east. Walking is not for those in hurry. Putting one foot in front of the other is the simplest form of movement. When walkers travel together, Â meeting other walkers there is no result, no time: the walkers may speak to one another, walker a speaking with walker b, Â the noise disrupting the flow of information. Even for as simple a communication as walkers mentioning the best path for viewing the city, what can be seen on this corner or that street. But they are not in a hurry, for they cannot arrive at the safe house too early. They must hide in the midday crowds and observe the safe house from a safe distance, to see if the building is secure. Hence after leaving the Hotel they are meandering through the streets, crowds, small parks as they walk towards their destination.
[Magrid is briefing Kenzo and Hasimon after the late afternoon crisis meeting, itâs nearly 7 in the evening]
In the late morning they pause at the Gallery Oto, initially to use up some more time, they look at jewelry, he buys her a necklace made of two chains and colored pieces, the bigger chain is made up of blackened  silver links. each link is approximately 1.5 cm on each of its three sides, one side a half circle the other two sides straight making a triangle,  there is a connecting chain that threads, interleaves  through the links. The lower half of the necklace has a dozen pieces of colored stone and plastic,  variously shaped in green, reds, brown, yellow, a clear piece of resin has shards of emerald suspended in it and a heart shaped piece in black has some small pieces of ruby embedded in it. There are matching ear studs,  one red and the other green. She puts them on. The colored pieces hang down from her neck onto her chest. The jewelry softens her face, disguises the tension. The saleswoman wonders about these slightly tired looking people, at the man who has bought this woman such a necklace, at her smile as she fastened it around her neck in the mirror,the happiness on her face as she puts the studs in. The seriousness only returning as she looks out onto the street. The transference advances and is acknowledged to be on the terrain on which all their basic problems are playing themselves out. [Eight hours later Magrid pauses the briefing at this point and hands the two people people in the room photos of her smiling.]
The Cafe Anticene aka  H&H is on the opposite side of the road from the safe house. There is a ground floor ad a large basement. They arrive in the late morning around eleven-thirty and occupy a table to the far right of the cafe, in the shade with a good view of the front of the house. The cafe has double doors to the left, they are on air hinges which open both inwards and outwards. The doors automatically close in  soft swish. There is a step upwards onto a dark wooden suspended floor. Inside the vacant space beneath the floor is power and network cabling for the points around the walls. The tables were a mixture of circular tables with a single aluminium support column with five aluminium legs that emerge from the bottom with black disk feet that stand on the floor. The table tops are of white melamine with a black plastic protector pm the edge. The larger rectangular tables were of wood with four legs, one in each corner. The chairs varied in styles. Lights hang down over the tables on white cables. The ones they sat on were Fritz Hanson plywood chairs with arms.  Some of the other chairs are made of plywood on black tubular metal frames, the backs  are slightly curved whilst the seats are flat and ungiving.
After a hour sipping coffee and tea, eating bowls of cut up fruit with an unrecognizable strange white creamy substance. They are almost invisible in the cafe, talking about nothing in particular, looking at each other and the street, occasionally looking at the other people in the cafe. Watching, becoming closer exchanging atoms and nanoparticles as they speak, infecting one another with viruses. The bacteria of growing affection being breathed in. Only the woman server notices them, initially looking at the necklace rather than the woman's face. Only noticing how cautiously they looked afterwards. They discuss how long they should wait, a little longer she says. They talk quietly about her tattoos, the one on her back and the other on her arm and their meaning.  The woman goes to the toilet, washes her hands, rinses her face applying some lipstick and eyeshadow, she doesn't really know why and listens. [Magrid  explains that this is from the Cafe Anticene's  internal  IOT network.  This is a transcript of the conversation on the screen]
[...] He is sitting and looking up at the gangster and in his best innocent tourist voice says that he is waiting for his wife. She is on the phone. The black suited gangster asks where he is from as his partner is buying coffees. The third gangster of the team is outside smoking a cigarette and watching the street. He tells him he is from London. And smiles that they are visiting her parents and brother. We are exploring Tokyo for a few days... (This innocent, idle conversation will follow the gangster for years. Causing his subordinates and boss to laugh at him, whilst also telling him that he is the luckiest person in Tokyo. From this moment on people will always like working with him.) The gangsters loosely fitting black suit jacket doesn't quite hide the gun under his left shoulder. He asks the tourist whether he is liking Tokyo. It is lovely, he says though the family is difficult. Politics of families, he says. Hence the exploring. Beginning to lose interest. He looks out he sees a tall woman on a mobile phone talking and assumes its her. What sort of exploring, or we are just driftworking around. He doesn't let the gangster escape by continuing and saying to him that her father and mother were very shocked when she adopted me... It was all very accidental. Even her brother disapproves of us really. The gangster wonders at the strangeness of the words he is speaking. It must be difficult... I understand them of course, It must be strange when your daughter visits with her alien husband. [âŠ] At an adjacent table a young man and woman are sitting together with a push chair between them and a young sleeping baby. They are eating buns, drinking fruit smoothies and looking guilty.
She started smiling at the idea of wife, and had to suppress her unusual desire to laugh. She peered through the gap in the doorway, vaguely recognized the gangster from meetings. Knowing that anyone else who who who said that she would probably hurt or even kill. (Thirty year old woman laughing at the words of the man she is with. She shakes her head), stepping back as another woman enters the bathroom. When she looks through the crack again she can see them leaving carrying a dozen takeaway cups. She waits until they have gone and then orders some more coffee. The gangster looks back from the entrance to the safe house and sees the Tall woman entering the cafe. They leave the cafe through the basement of the cafe which is  windowless. You enter it by walking down the deep treads of double width wooded stairs, each tread having a brass edge protector. The stairs are almost two metres across with wooden handrails on both sides. The lighting in the basement was provided by six retro multifilament lamps hanging from black cables from the ceiling and a similar number of shaded wall lamps. There were half a dozen tables in the basement arranged in two rows. Only a few  of the tables had customers, small groups of workers using laptops and discussing finance and projects dates. The walls were painted in a base of pale blue, pictures hanging on the walls. The first clock on the wall was stopped at 6.30. The second showed the time in Argentina.  There was no way to tell night from day in the basement. They looked up and watched as they walked through the basement and walked to the far end where there was a metal staircase that led up to a fire exit. They walked out into the sunlight on the service road behind the cafe and turned to the left walking side by side towards the exit into the main street. Three men in black slightly ill-fitting suits walked round the corner fifteen metres ahead. The first of the men recognized her and began to reach and pull out his gun the second began to follow his lead. The third looked bewildered.The alleyway had a smooth light grey concrete surface with a slightly ridged surface. Recycling, composting  and waste bins lined up besides entrances.  [This is particularly fascinating. Whoever he is we can see he has no idea how to fight. Look at how they try and shoot him first...]
Fifteen metres, she ran at them pulling out her short sword as she did so, he was dead before heâd fired a shot, the second man managed a single shot at the man, he missed before the sword pieced his arm and pinned it to his body. She left him turning towards the third man who heâd just run at, collided and pushed into the wall. She kicked him, shattering his kneecap. Just over ten seconds of extreme violence. She left the sword in the mans body, he seemed to be alive. Took the two guns. Â She bends over the man and places the gun barrel on this throat. And takes his gun and wallet. She speaks in a voice that fills him with fear, and tells him to phone for an ambulance, as he might live.[...] she pauses, actually I have just received an interesting proposal that i need time to consider. So tell them to leave me alone, i am busy thinking about it. Â They followed the concrete service road down and to the right on Ten-gat.
[Magrid handed the transcript and a photo of her speaking to him. The man standing an looking at her. The final images I want to show you are after this, they are walking down Ten-Gat and five minutes later about to turn off Ten-Gat. They are holding hands. He pauses, are you OK looking at Hasimon's ashen face. before continuing I think he's her boyfriend. They had sex in the hotel last night. And look at how she is holding his hand. I didn't know she had one, was even capable of it. Kenzo looks at the picture of her smiling as they vanished again. I Â have never seen her with someone who isn't either slightly wary or scared of her. So that's what it looks like.]
The lunchtime crowds of Ten-gat and the surrounding areas were in flux. A vast array of indistinguishable white shirts, dresses, suits, a steady flow of people.She took hold of his hand on the service road and they stepped out into the flood, bodies touching. (No definition of transference could ignore the pleasure of their unconscious touching.) They crossed the road diagonally across the junction in the midst of the crowd crossing the junction diagonally on the black and white stripes. Later they stole a deep blue car in Nihombashi and drove towards making contact with Kenzo...

Certified Badass
John has been taking captive and shows everyone that he is, in fact, a badass
Ships: Johnlock, lightly. Could be read as just friends
Warnings: none discriptive violence, minor OC death, kidnapping, mentions of war
~~~~~~~
When John said he had bad days he wasn't kidding. The normally calm and peaceful army doctor could turn into a cold blooded killer if that was necessary without any second thoughts. Not many saw it coming, sure they knew he was in the army, but that also knew he was a doctor and if you try to picture it you don't see someone on the front lines. Everyone was reminded of the fact that John Watson is much scarier than Sherlock if he wants when they were chasing a drug ring. They had been hot on their trail when John was taken. Sherlock had lost it, he ripped whole London apart to find him, but still after two days to no avail.
-Two days earlier-
John woke up groggily tied to a chair with a crick in the neck. He looked around to find out where he was and saw a clichĂ© evil layer. It was a warehouse (abandoned, naturally) with taped of windows and pieces of plastic hanging around to create a room in which he was isolated. He rolled his eyes at it and then realized what he had done. Hm, he thought to himself, it's probably bad that I've gotten used to people kidnapping me. He felt his bonds, zip ties. Those were easy to break out of, if you knew how. He looked around and thought, if I move now they will see me through the plastic and I don't know how many there are, but they don't know I'm awake yet, so I will have the element of surprise. He contemplated it for a while and yelled: âHello. Is anyone there?â
It was silent for a second, but then footsteps were heard echoing through the warehouse. The plastic was shoved aside and a muscled man entered the makeshift room. âAh, I was worried you had forgotten I was here and left.â John quipped.
The man frowned, but otherwise ignored Johns comment. He went to stand before John and asked: âWhat do you know about our operation?â
âUhm, well for starters, itâs a drug ring. Importing and exporting drugs, that sort of thing. You get your stuff in and out by using cheap cars. Oh, and Iâve heard you are all extremely violent. Did I miss anything?â John answered, not sounding bothered at all, much to the guys dismay.
âYou donât sounds scared.â
âOh, should I be, sorry. Uhm, Ahhh, oh no, Iâve been captured!â
The guys glared at him and without giving a warning he punched John squared in the face. John was dazed for a second. Then he said: âGoodness gracious, you can pack a punch. Wow, If I had my hands untied, I would reach for my face and touch it, you know, classic style. Wait, Iâll show you.â
The guy looked confused and then even more confused. John had broken free from his zip ties and lunged at the man. He silenced him with a hand over his mouth and locked his arm away and began kneeing the guy in the lower abdomen. The guy went down and before John could deliver the final blow he asked: âWho are you, man? What are you?â
John smiled a menacing smile and said: âCaptain Watson, adrenalin junkie.â
And it was lights out for the guy. He got the guys shoes, which were slightly too big and his guns. Then he made his way onwards into the base. All in all, the base was actually quite sad and the guys werenât much of a challenge. John took them down one by one, or more like three by three, really these guys were not trained. That shouldâve been his first red light. His second red light shouldâve been the lack of phones. He searched everyone, but found no phones. Hm, he thought, strange. Then he went outside to find a phone to call Sherlock. The moment he set foot outside he felt something sting him in his neck and he fell unconscious. Shit, shouldâve accounted for more outside, I let the easiness comfort me, was his last coherent thought.
~
John woke up groggily, again. This time, however, there was no comfy chair or zip ties. No, this time he was suspended from the ceiling by iron chains. His body was already sore from being unconscious in that position. His feet barely reached the ground forcing him to stand on his tiptoes for a bit of release. He groaned and looked up as someone entered his room. It was a tall guy with a lot of tattoos. He cracked his neck and knuckles and set to work, not saying a word to John.
For about two or three hours John was a punching bag. He took everything they threw at his with minimal grunts and screams. The beating stopped when he lost a tooth and another guy arrived. This guy had less muscles and less tattoos, but he had an intelligent look in his eye and air of confidence that people only possessed when they knew they were in charge. The guy fixed his glasses and said: âSo, Dr. Watson, this might not have been the warmest of welcomes, but you did try to take down my whole operation. Of course beating you up isnât my only purpose. I am a business man after all, and you, Dr. Watson, are a great asset, our test just confirmed that. So, if you wish to join us now is your chance, if you donât, well, lets just say this is the only room you will see alive.â
A small part of John brain yelled at him to agree, to go along with them and use that to break out, another, much bigger part of him, that was high on all the adrenalin, screamed at him to spit in his face and tell him to go fuck himself. John listened to the spit-in-his-face part of himself.
The man took a few offended steps backwards and said: âYour answer is loud and clear. You did this to yourself.â
Then he gestured to the other guy who started beating John again until he fell unconscious again about an hour later.
~
John came to groggily for the third time in so many hours and, to be honest, he was getting kind sick of it. He looked around and thought, Sherlock is probably getting worried about now. I need to get out of here, plus my nips are cold. Where is my shirt?
He climbed his chains and let himself drop, successfully breaking out of them. Well, as good as, he was still chained together, but the chain was freed from the ceiling. He waited to see if the sound got a response, but after a minute of silence there was nothing. He opened the door. It wasnât even locked, which was pretty offensive.
John crept down the hall. He came past a led pipe and took it. He rounded the corner and came to face with three armed guys. Before they could react he knocked the first one down and was already chocking the second with his chain. Within a minute the three lay unconscious on the ground. He disarmed them and took their guns and communicative devices, plus a shirt. He realized hi couldnât put on the shirt, cursed and listened in on the radio. He heard that they were meeting with the boss for the orders. He went to the location and hid somewhere out of sight and watched how whole the building streamed to the room. He waited until they were talking when he started to take them out one by one.
There were only twelve people and he started with the guys with big guns. They screamed and the others opened fire on his location. John ducked away and popped up again somewhere else along the barrier. He shot another three and ducked away again. He waited until the shooting stopped and then he laid on his side sticking out from the barrier like that. That way he manage to shoot four more. The two that were still standing looked around to their fallen comrades and surrendered.
When they saw who they had surrendered to their eyes went wide. Before them stood a short guy with a too big T-shirt that hung weirdly around him, not at all intimidating. At least if it would be if it wasnât for the blood soaking through the fabric and the maniac look in his eyes. John knocked them out as well and went to tie them up. He then checked if there were any survivors between the rest, he found none and went back to the other two guys. He tied them up as well and went to look for a phone and the keys for the chains around his hands.
-Now-
Lestrade was sitting in his office when he got a call from a unknown number. Usually he wouldnât pick up, but with Sherlock worrying about John and he would take anything to not talk to the guy, so he picked up. âDI Lestrade speaking.â he said.
On the other side someone breathed in relief then a very familiar voice said: âAh, thank god, I was afraid youâd let me ring. I donât know exactly where I am, but Iâm not in London thatâs for sure.â
âJohn?â
âYeah, itâs me.â
âWhere have you been these past two days?â
âOh, abducted by some drug guys. I found the ring, by the way.â
âAre you OK!â
âYeah, Iâm fine. Now, focus, you need to come find me.â
âHow am I going to do that. You need to get away from where they held you as quick as possible. Can you take this pone with you? That way you can call if you know where you are.â
âNo, I donât have to leave here. I took over the base, you just need to come pick me up.â
âYou took over the base?â
âYeah, I just said that, keep up. Now, write this down. Iâm looking East and I see the sea. The house is a sort of vacation cottage or something. Itâs in the middle of nowhere by the looks of it. Now if I look to the West I see a forest all the way up to the North, and some hills to the South. You get all that?â
âYes.â
âGood, get it to Sherlock. Iâm sure heâll figure out where I am.â
âOK, see you when were coming to pick you up. Donât get killed.â
âI wonât donât worry. See you then.â
BEEEEP. Lestrade sighed. Why was this his life again?
~
They pulled up at the house the next day. They had ridden the whole night and all they wanted to do was to go to bed as soon as possible. They surrounded the building and Lestrade called: âThe place is surrounded. John you can come out safely.â
A figure appeared at the door. He was tiny and wore an over-sized T-shirt awkwardly around his midriff without his hands in the holes and jeans with blood on them and he was sipping some tea. He also had chains around his arms. He held one hand up in mock surrender and said: âItâs just me. The baddies are inside and I have to warn you it smells kind of bad.â
Weapons were lowered and Sherlock asked: âAre you OK? What happened?â
âOh, no deductions, thatâs surprising. Iâm fine, just some broken ribs, I think, some bruises, my wrists hurt a lot, but thatâs understandable, and a broken nose. Nothing major. Iâm fine. As for what happened they took me to a warehouse first as some sort of test. I broke out and they drugged me and brought me here. They used me as a punching bag when I didnât want to join and when they were away I broke my chains from the ceiling. I took out three guys and stole their guns heard about a meeting and started a gun fight to get away. Took out ten before the last two surrendered. The five survivors are inside. Sadly, I shot through the keys, so these have been stuck around me for the entire time.â
He jiggled his chains. âYou took out everyone in there, alone?â Lestrade said disbelieving.
âYeah,â John shrugged, âI had to get out, seeing that you didnât come to get me.â
Sherlock laughed at that and said: âI will never doubt you again, Dr. Watson.â
âI will hold you to that next time you question me.â John said.
Then he saw Donovan and Lestrade still looking as if they saw pink elephants fly and he rolled his eyes. He sighed and said: âLook, I know you guys know me as just a calm city doctor, but Iâve been on three tours in Afghanistan. I operated with bullets flying by. Hell, I had to shoot people so that I could continue operating. I learned some tricks before I came here.â
They were all quiet and stared at him, then Sherlock said: âLets leave these imbeciles to deal with your mess and get hospital. Youâre bleeding.â
John nodded and let himself be pulled away. He did need medical attention and some more sleep. The rest looked at him go, their own certified badass. This was new.
HUO Restaurant, Chelsea London
HUO Restaurant, Chelsea Commercial Interior, London Building Project, UK Architecture Images
HUO Restaurant in London
2 Aug 2021
Design: Jonathan Clark Architects
Location: Chelsea, south west London, England, UK
HUO Restaurant
HUĆ is a new restaurant in Chelsea which joins sister restaurant ULI in Notting Hill serving clean, fresh and healthy Asian food.
Many people may remember the adjacent stretch of the Fulham Road and surrounding streets being referred as âChelsea Beachâ and it is this association which has inspired much of the interior design.
Driftwood colours by way of bleached timber banquettes and flooring and a white timber raft ceiling, combined with an abundance of natural light surrounded by tropical plants ensure a fresh and airy ambience in which to enjoy some of the capitalâs best Asian food.
In a similar way to ULI, we have avoided any direct references that would normally be associated with far eastern design.
The main design element of the space is a suspended ceiling raft of bleached timber strips that start at the front of the space and take your eye all the way down to back. Apart from providing a visual feature, this ceiling also disguises several unsightly low structural beams and mechanical and electrical services.
This site previously operated as a restaurant, and we understand that the rear area of the space tended to be avoided by patrons. Our aim was to turn this situation around by making the rear area just as attractive as the front area. Our solution was to install false mirrored âwindowsâ to create the impression of a rear courtyard, with recessed boxes for tropical plants. The opening up of a rear skylight also provides additional daylight. Finally, we installed six circular banquettes, each to seat four to six people and these are proving to be the most popular seats in the restaurant.
Finally we very carefully curated the artworks, furniture and soft furnishings with our clients.
Six Senses Signs First Hotel in UK
Six Senses has signed its first hotel in London, England. The Six Senses London, scheduled to open in 2023, will be located in the iconic building that housed the former department store, Whiteleys. The hotel will open with 110 guest rooms and suites, starting from 355 square feet (33 square meters). There will also be 14 branded residences, with owners able to tap into all the privileges that come with a Six Senses home, including bespoke interior design, concierge service, dining, housekeeping and wellness programming.
Whiteleys takes its name from visionary entrepreneur, William Whiteley, who opened his first drapery shop in Westbourne Grove in 1863. A little over a decade later, the shop had grown to a department store described as an immense symposium of the arts and industries of the nation and of the world. Once a vibrant destination that formed the focus for the surrounding residential neighborhood, Whiteleys was then redeveloped in the 1980s into a shopping center with a cinema and bowling alley. It subsequently closed its doors in December 2018 as its popularity diminished. The redevelopment of Whiteleys is being headed by a Meyer Bergman-advised fund, with the preeminent residential real estate developer Finchatton as development manager. In collaboration with the British architectural firm, Foster + Partners, renowned for its eco credentials and responsible design approach, this historic landmark will become a sensitively restored mixed-use development. The original Grade II faade, central courtyard and dome will all be preserved, as will the majestic internal staircase (modeled on the La Scala opera house in Milan), which features as the centerpiece on the ground floor of the hotel. Inspired by the buildings origins, the interiors of Six Senses London are being designed by internationally celebrated AvroKO in conjunction with executive architects EPR, and combine nostalgic nods to classical detailing and art deco along with modern streamlining. Contemporary art from British artists will be showcased throughout the hotel. Six Senses London will feature a cozy lobby bar and lounge, an all-day dining restaurant with an open kitchen and seating area in the courtyard, a Six Senses Spa, a comprehensive fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, bar, and a relaxation room with vaulted ceilings. On the second floor, residents and members will access a new kind of social and wellness club. Away from the density and intensity of the city, this space will feature a central bar and lounge, coworking spaces, a restaurant and wellness rooms, and offer pioneering programming to encourage growth, reflection and reconnection. Chief Executive Officer, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, Neil Jacobs, said, I feel nostalgic when talking about Whiteleys. I grew up in the neighborhood and my parents used to bring me here. It is a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to this heritage and bring our brand values to life in this part of town, while celebrating our first port of call for Six Senses in the UK. The Natural History Museum, London, unveils new entrance exhibit with Blue Whale Skeleton display
The Natural History Museum in London has unveiled its new star, a giant blue whale skeleton called Hope.
The skeleton is from 1891 and originally went on display in 1934 and has been installed as part of a revamp at the South Kensington museum.
The 25.2 metre mammal suspended from the ceiling forms the main exhibit as visitors come through the front door and replaces the much-loved Diplodocus dinosaur, "Dippy", which will soon head out on a tour of the UK.
Blue whales are now making a recovery following decades of exploitation that nearly drove them out of existence.
The Museumâs Patron, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, and Sir David Attenborough attended a gala launch reception ahead of the public opening.
Sir Michael Dixon, director of the Natural History Museum, said: 'This is a landmark moment for the Museum and for the millions of people from all over the world who visit us. The transformation of Hintze Hall represents a new era for us as a natural history museum for the future.
"Putting our blue whale, Hope, at the centre of the Museum, between living species on the West and extinct species on the East, is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the responsibility we have towards our planet."
Grey Griffiths Architects completes London extension featuring exposed oak roof structure
Exposed rafters support a pitched roof incorporating a large skylight that allows daylight to flood into this rear extension added to a Victorian house in south London by local studio Grey Griffiths Architects.
The studio founded in 2016 by Tom Grey and Michael Griffiths was asked to oversee the renovation and extension of a terraced property in a conservation area in Clapham.
The one-bedroom garden flat featured a typical Victorian layout, with a series of rooms arranged off a corridor that extends along one side of the plan.
"The brief was to enlarge and reconfigure the property to achieve a second bedroom, create a bright open living area, and to add architectural interest to the space," said the architects.
An uninsulated bathroom at the rear of the house that was only accessible through the kitchen epitomised the neglected state of the interior and the need for extensive modernisation.
The property's location within the conservation area meant that an appeal was required to achieve planning permission, with the inspector ultimately agreeing that the proposal would enhance the rear of the house.
The shape of the new addition references the slanted roof of the existing closet return in the angles of its asymmetric profile.
The pitched roof also lowers the height of the eaves and therefore minimises its impact on the neighbours on either side.
Inside the extension, the vaulted roof form is highlighted by exposing the timber framework and suspending a series of industrial pendant lights from the rafters.
"The internal roof structure has been left open to increase the volume of the internal space," added Grey and Griffiths.
'The visible oak rafters add a warm, repetitive interest to the space and draw the eye up to the internal ridgeline, enhancing the feeling of space."
The extension now covers the full width of the building's rear facade, creating space for a lounge area and kitchen on either side of a partition spanning the space between two supporting pillars.
Large glass doors on either side of the brick pillar to the rear of the space provide a view out towards the garden and allow natural light to flood into the interior.
Timber that complements the roof structure is used to frame the doors, which can each pivot to open the whole room up to the outdoors.
To enhance the bright and open feel requested by the client, a long east-facing roof light is incorporated into the ceiling above the kitchen.
A new bathroom is positioned off a central transitional space between the two bedrooms to the front of the house and the kitchen and living space.
Oak rafters are also left visible in the bathroom, where a skylight above the shower and a window looking onto an internal courtyard draw daylight into the room.
The courtyard can be reached from one of the bedrooms. Another window looking onto this outdoor space allows light to filter into the transitional area, which is designed for reading and accommodates a stove and storage.
Photography is by Adam Scott.
Office partitioning has become the new buzzword in the London refurbishing industry. These innovative created spaces inspire employees and encourage creativity. The seamless transformation is simple yet effective and is available in a variety of offerings. Partitions are supplied and installed by well-established office refurbishment south east london, who understand the area and business community very well.
Partitions are by used by businesses who have outgrown their current space and has identified the need to develop and reinvent their current space. Acclaimed refurbishing specialists will install partitions in a non-invasive manner without any structural changes to the office building. Only premium quality partitions are used for professional installations.
Office partitions range from portable, fixed, demounted, to permanently fitted cubicles, and are ideal for open spaces that have high traffic, or rentals where the landlord refuses permission for structural changes.
Important considerations when installing office partitions, is to decide whether the installation is permanent or temporary and if there is a need for mobility and storage, when it is not in use. Partitions can be quite versatile, and these room dividers with their elements of mobility, can be wheeled into storage when necessary.
Additional office space is created when needed. These temporary offices or private spaces can be used for training rooms or meeting facilities. It also provides innovative storage solutions for small office spaces, because it takes up minimal space when folded. Portable accordion walls and acoustic screens, made from noise cancelling materials are also suitable for this application.
Sliding office partitions available in a variety of colours and materials, offer great solutions for limited office space, seamlessly sliding in between desks, or between office spaces, without any disruption. It is beneficial for the creation of privacy, increased productivity and the reduction of noise levels.
Although partitions are not the same as brick walls, fixed office partitions have excellent noise cancelling characteristics, and offers a great alternative to permanent fixtures. It comes at a higher price than portable screens due to the durable materials used for manufacturing, as well as the additional labour costs for installation by professional teams. Consultations take place beforehand between clients and experienced installation specialists because the manufacturing takes place off-site.
The high-quality materials include glass, wood, and powder-coated steel. These partitions can be full-height panels or floor to ceiling installations, creating privacy and soundproofing while giving a modern twist to a traditional office space.
Glass partitions lets through natural light and creates a bright space which enhances cognitive performance, while still creating a demarcated working area, creating separation without segregation.
Double or triple glazed glass is used for floor-to-ceiling, of half-way up installations, depending on the noise-cancelling requirements from the client. Choices are endless, and clients are able to select either seamless glass walls or installed into a framework, or even glass panels added to solid partition walls. The glass panels can be cladded with film, displaying the company logo or branding. Â If additional privacy is required for the glass partitions, blinds can be successfully installed.
All the information you need if you are considering the installation of suspended ceilings in London
All the information you need if you are considering the installation of suspended ceilings in London
The ceiling is an area of ââthe house that often goes unnoticed, and we think that area is not really that important, but the reality is that it is just as important as any other area of ââthe house. Many people prefer a ceiling that is smooth and white so that it can give the feeling of space to the room, and although it is a good option, there are many other ideas to decorate the ceiling of your home to make it look incredible.
When we think of renovating or decorating our homes, we usually think first of new colour for the walls or new tiles for the floor, but we almost never consider giving our old ceilings a new life.In recent years, an increasing number of people have started to opt for suspended ceilings in their homes, which of course is also an excellent option to hide flaws in their old ceilings.
In general, ceilings are part of a building that is sufficient to determine the beauty of any room, but as everyone knows, ceilings tend to lose their initial splendour and visual impact, and become less attractive over the years, due to normal wear.Modern ceiling designs have begun to break away from the old-fashioned dull and boring ceilings that cover the inside of our roofs, and they have the advantage of being aesthetically pleasing.
If your ceiling has lost its former charm and you want to give it a new look, nowadays there are a myriad of options to choose from.Suspended ceilings for one, will give your old ceilings a fresh and modern new look that also requires very little (or easy) maintenance.However, the right choice of decorative ceilings is very important, because it plays a double role - aesthetically and functionally.
The main function of suspended ceilings is to improve the atmosphere of the room and to hide all visible defects.It is also an effective way to hide unsightly wiring and pipes from the roof.With decorative suspended ceilings, homeowners can create beautiful and magical lighting effects, for more comfort and impeccable aesthetics. In addition, suspended ceilings provide additional insulation for cold rooms and also serve as an excellent damper for external sounds.
If some of the latest available models do not exactly suit your needs, you can of course also consider custom-made suspended ceilings in London.This option offers more freedom for creativity and custom-made suspended ceilings can be integrated into any room and in many different forms.Suspended, multi-coloured, stretched, or decorated with geometric patterns, these can quickly become a work of art to enhance the interior of your house.
If you want to decorate the hanging ceiling design at home it is better to consider gypsum board panelsor panels made of plastic, wood or glass, as these have no shortcomings in terms of operation.
In most cases, finishing group tiles for false ceilings are mostly plasterboardbut another important aspect to consider when it comes to suspended ceilings in London is the ability of the panels to absorb moisture.
In this regard, suspended ceilings in which the composition of activated substance material is based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC), might be the best option. While these ceiling panels may appear rather fragile at first glance, their exploitation practice has shown a very good wear resistance performance. Manufacturers testsindicate that the false ceiling PVC can withstand loads of up to 100 litres of water.
It is important to keep in mind that different types of suspended ceilings also differ in technical composition and operational characteristics and to find the right type of suspended ceilings in London that specifically suit your needs, it is advisable to seek expert advice first.
