Burnout. It is a syndrome that is said to afflict humans who feel chronic stress. But after conducting a novel study using trail cameras showing the interactions between white-tailed deer fawns and predators, a Penn State researcher suggests that prey animals feel it, too.

“And you can understand why they do,” said Asia Murphy, who recently graduated with a doctorate from Penn State’s Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Ecology. “Less than half of whitetail fawns live to see their first birthday, and many are killed by predators, such as coyotes, black bears and bobcats. Fawns instinctively ‘know’ they are in constant danger.”

Ironically, the presence of humans — who mean the fawns no harm and likely would protect them if they could — only ratchets up the stress the young animals experience, Murphy added. Even if it’s just people hiking on a trail in a state park, it is a disturbance to be avoided by fawns, leaving less landscape and less time for them to feed and evade predators.

“The presence of people creates an environment where the danger seems so high that the animals basically stop having vigilance behaviors,” she said. “That was the surprising thing about my research — when fawns perceive that there is so much danger coming from so many sources, their behavior seemed like they just relaxed, like there’s no point in being ready to hide or flee. I saw that in older deer, too.”

In areas where there are many predators and people present, fawns seem to relax instead of acting hypervigilant, she noted.

“Like so much constant stress leaves them burned out,” she said.

The goal of the study was to examine how human-dominated landscapes influence the timing, frequency and physical spacing and locations of interactions between humans, black bears, coyotes, bobcats and fawns, as well as to contrast deer vigilance behavior at each location. The researchers compared “camera trap” data from six surveys in and around three central Pennsylvania public forest sites with different surroundings — forest, agriculture and development.

The Bald Eagle and Rothrock State Forest sites were surrounded by agriculture and low-density housing, whereas the Susquehannock State Forest site was surrounded by largely unbroken forest. Analyzing more than 10,000 photos, researchers observed markedly different behavior of fawns, adult deer and predators at the three locations, dictated, they suggest, by the presence of humans and their changes to the landscape.

Camera trap surveys began in mid- to late-May, which coincided with the start of the period when fawns are born and are most vulnerable to predation, and ended in mid-September, before the hunting season. Researchers randomly established 18 camera locations at each of the three study sites, spaced a minimum of a half mile apart within an area of about 100 square miles.

At least one camera was placed at each location and typically remained there for an average of 47 days before being moved to a new location. Cameras were set to take three pictures when triggered by an animal with a one-minute rest period. Each location was baited with a combination of bobcat urine, a skunk-based scent attractant and a fatty acid tablet.

In findings recently published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, the researchers reported that bears, bobcats, coyotes, fawns and adult deer all had more frequent timing overlaps in the agriculture and development sites compared to the mostly unbroken forest site. In addition, factors that influenced deer vigilance, such as distance to forest edge and predator abundance in the agriculture and development sites, were not factors in the mostly unbroken forest site.

“By taking into account the different antipredator behaviors that can be detected and the different scales at which these behaviors might occur, we were able to gain a more comprehensive picture of how humans reduce available niche space for wildlife,” Murphy said. “It was clear that disturbed landscapes — agriculture and development — create more time and space overlap between predators and fawns.”

This research is important because it is among the first to document that human land disturbance influences the dynamics of predator-prey interactions, according to Murphy’s adviser, Duane Diefenbach, adjunct professor of wildlife ecology in the College of Agricultural Sciences. Wildlife biologists suspected human interference enhances opportunities for predators, but they had not seen proof.

“This study shows that antipredator behavior by fawns varies across space, time and predator species,” said Diefenbach, who is leader of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Pennsylvania Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Penn State. “When multiple predator species co-occur but vary in their use of space, time of activity and hunting mode, it creates a complex landscape for prey trying to avoid predation. Human presence has the potential to shift interactions among predators and prey and where and when encounters occur.”

Birds of Prey Valerie Steward - Crime boss, rival of Roman Sionis, has Renfield Syndrome, usually likes the most expensive and lush possessions. Has very large circles beneath her (In a social/hierarchical sense).  Can be incredibly eccentric, and very passionate.

One/Omni- The first of the Blackcoats, a large group of highly trained marshal-like operatives. Omni himself usually does not get involved in combat, and pays close attention to details. 

Two/Hyinth- The second in the first thirteen/High Council of the Blackcoats. Isn’t quick to rush to violence, though they will do what they must to get things done. 

Three/Cettie- The financial backer of the council. Doesn’t usually get involved with the violent sectors of the organisation, she finds it a waste of time. 

Four/Aven- Pure bodyguard material. That’s it, that’s Aven. Not himbo- he’s to smart and sharp for that- just muscly man who will protect at all costs.

Five/Aretha- Now when I tell you that this woman knows how to kill someone and get away with it, I mean it. She trained to be Valerie’s understudy in a sense, and has perfected her own technique in disposing of people when asked.

Six/Giga- The techie. Honestly, they know so much about random stuff they will RAM it down your throat. They’re also kind of jokey, hence the pun. 

Seven- Seven gave up his name when he was fairly young, and is now one of the most powerful and down-to-earth of the Blackcoat high council, as he is the one who oversees the training regimens.

Eight/Axel- A total wild card of the group. Rarely follows orders, and lashes out with violence fairly frequently. He’s honestly a big softie though. 

Nine/Jerra- Usually the one that gets sent in when they need an undercover job done, or a mole of some description. He’s a phenomenal actor. 

Ten/Rocsas- One of the youngest. He’s very ‘in’ with the word on the streets of Gotham,and often informs the council of riots/coups that are being planned by the gangs of the city of crime.  

Eleven/Ixi- Iris/Thirteen’s twin. They are very detached, and don’t often show emotion in the work place. It is suspected that they show lots of affection in a domestic setting though. 

Twelve/Brutus- As his name suggests, he is the strongest of the group, naturally born this way and has honed his skills in since starting training. He is very protective, and follows orders. Not always the brightest spark though, but occasionally he will get a good idea. 

Thirteen/Iris- Sometimes referred to as the ‘softest’ of the High Council, as she is much more compassionate than the majority of her peers. She doesn’t mind it all that much, and often interjects in debates with the more emotional side of the story. 

Twenty-Six/Kalmiya- Almost an entirely blank slate, she is seen as the perfect soldier. Little room for emotions, much room for logic. However, she does seem to learn social cues and expressions very quickly off of other people. 

CATS  A note- about the cats ocs; Just because they are stated to have mated with another Tom/Queen does not mean I won’t write for them. If I write for the children, the bond between parents is not usually mentioned.  

Ariadne-A witch’s cat. She is quite mysterious, but once she warms up to you she’ll adore you like there’s no tomorrow. She is able to teleport over a short distance, has slight telepathy, and sometimes has visions of the future. 

Graciette- The pub cat. Daughter of Skimbleshanks and Jennyanydots, younger sister to the mischievous twins Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, and older sister to the young kitten Electra. She is always on  time, and is very enthusiastic about overseeing the games in the pub. 

Leviticus- The oldest triplet, son of Ariande and the Rum Tum Tugger. He is very close with his grandfather, Old Deuteronomy, and very wise. 

Squiggletigs-The middle triplet, second son of Ariande and the Rum Tum Tugger. He is usually found with Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, he is much more playful than his older brother. He’s like the middle ground between Leviticus and Pixietrick.

Pixietrick- The youngest child of Ariande and the Rum Tum Tugger, and their only daughter. She’s very much like her father, both in appearance and in personality. 

Fantasma- The inventor’s cat, and daughter of Graciette and Alonzo. A lot of her time in the junkyard is spent finding random little trinkets and other doo-dads to use for her inventions, or just random collections she has. She’s very shy, and very sweet. 

Zilke- The blind cat, mother of Quaxo/Mistoffelees and Victoria. She tried to stick by Macavity when he was kicked from the tribe, her love blinding her to the near regicide that was committed. Eventually, she became actually blind. 

Seattine- One of the two pirate cats, rumoured to be descendants of Growltiger himself. They rarely come ashore, but when they do, they play many a shanty for old Gus. Seattine favours the concertina as her instrument, and is usually very upbeat.

Hurdeon- One of the two pirate cats, rumoured to be descendants of Growltiger himself. They rarely come ashore, but when they do, they play many a shanty for old Gus. Hurdeon favours the hurdy gurdy, and is a lot calmer than his twin sister. 

Doctor Sleep  Elva Warren- The owner of a sweet little antique shop in New Hampshire. She is always welcoming to new faces, and she knows just what cheers them up when she meets them, what to say to make them smile, all because of her Shine. 

IANOWT  Marilyn Higgins - An uncool kid like Stan and Sid, though a lot of people consider her to be less cool then them. Mostly because of all the morbid facts she spouts, especially during Science class. Probably also doesn’t help that she knows a fair few ways that the world could end that make some people uneasy.

IT  Melissa Farley- A British exchange student from a small village in Norfolk. She is very kind to those around her, even willing to take them in and introduce them to her family’s traditions and interests. She has even offered to tutor some of the Losers, should they ever need it.  Tiffany Crandall- A farming gal from Ludlow, Maine. She moved to Derry with her grandmother and grandfather after her parents were hit by a speeding Orinco truck. She is neughbour’s with Mike Hanlon, and has very little fear when it comes to brawls. It’s traffic and roads she doesn’t like. 

Moulin Rouge  Celine Bisset- A dancer in the Moulin Rouge. She is usually quite gentle, unless her client asks for her to be rougher and more assertive. She ended up becoming a dancer there because her fiance left her stranded when he ran off with another woman. 

Overwatch Asteria Murphy- After surviving an omnic siege where Blackwatch was sent to free the inhabitants of an apartment block, Asteria joined Overwatch to try and make sure nothing like that happened again. 

Mars Virgil- Son of Asteria Murphy, and Jesse McCree. Grew up in Deadlock Grange with his mother, and Robert Virgil- the man he assumed was his father. He joined Overwatch after  an attack on his mother’s diner, and found out his true family soon after.

Resident Evil Village Ihrin Moreau- Sister of Salvatore Moreau. Unlike her brother, her experience with the Cadou did not mutate her into a fish at first glance. It is when she comes into contact with water that her first stage mutation reveals itself, and her true mutated form shows when she is critically injured. She is vain and practically unfeeling unless something catches her eye.

Aeolus Aetos- Self proclaimed “Lord of the Wing”. Aeolus is a man who’s mutation made him think so highly of himself that he only concerns himself with his own problems. He is vain, and keeps himself the most pristine he can. Being mutated to appear part eagle gives him both his pride and his expert hunting skills

Mori Russell- One of the village hunters, who survived the lycan attacks by fleeing into the forests, and hiding out of sight. 

Lena Vaughn- Daughter of the local brewer. Also survived the lycan attacks, but because of her skill with a shotgun rather than running away. 

Shallow Grave Deirdre Sullivan- A failing artist who moved from her family home in Ireland to chase her dreams. She’s partway there, she’s just lacking in the money.Money that she has a hand in keeping away from David. 

Star Wars  Alaana Rohiikshuul- A Jedi consular/seer. She is very down to earth, and tries her best to have the mysteries of the Force reveal themselves to her so that she may write of them. It is this constant search for knowledge that has her meditating for days on end, lost in her own thoughts. Alessandro  Rohiikshuul - Alaana’s twin brother, and the slightly more impulsive of the two. This is not to say he is outwardly violent. Like Alaana, he makes sure to exhaust all other options beforehand. He is much more openly passionate.  Othkiir Rohiikshuul- A young, feline force sensitive from Alaana and Alessandro’s home planet, Tmryn. He can be a little all over the place sometimes, but he tries to do everything he  can for the greater good. 

Daesha’Tiatkin- A Twi’lek force sensitive who deserted the Jedi Order in her late teens- opting to live a scoundrel’s life. She does what betters her, and usually her alone, though you should not mistake this for having no moral compass. She is impulsive, and almost always optimistic. 

Kyden Kenobi- Son of Sith!Obi-Wan and Sith!Alaana. Captain/Commander of the Night Witches squadron in the Empire’s fleet. Usually incredibly goofy and sweet. 

Trainspotting Ava Byrne- (First film)- A philosophy student who got stuck in Edinburgh when she left her home. She got stuck in the same apartment building as Renton and the other boys, but refuses to divulge in their illegal activities.  (Second film)- Ava didn’t end up leaving Edinburgh, the best thing she managed to do was write “The Ethics of Drug Use”, which was of course inspired by the boys’ old lives. She hasn't properly seen the boys since Mark left, though she will occasionally pass Simon or Daniel in the street, and give them a semi-respectful nod.

Misc  (Special Ingredients- my original story in the works) Tex Hudson-  The eldest brother of the trio of brothers, and he was the one to change his name when he got married the first time, as if it would help him in his family’s “business”. He has quite a temper, and is usually rather gruff. There are occasions where he can be sweet, they’re just growing exceedingly rare. Sloane Sawyer- The middle brother, and arguably the most elegant of the three. Always in a suit, he acts like the perfect gentleman in front of others, however when there’s no one else around, he tends to gloat about how many kills he has under his belt.  James ‘JJ’ Sawyer- The youngest brother, but also the tallest. Standing at a whopping six foot nine, Jamie may seem like a beast of a man, but he actually quite gentle. He’s a little slower than the others when it comes to figuring some things out, but he doesn’t let that slow him down anywhere else. He is incredibly sweet, quite passionate, and not afraid to show his vulnerable side when his brother’s aren’t around. 

Victoria/Victor Farley- A pirate captain who sails within the Devil’s Ring (more on that in their first piece), and acts however they so please within the pirate code. Born as Victoria Farley on mainland England, they followed their father through to the centre of the Devil’s Ring- becoming one of his crew in the process. From there they fought on and on, till they became a ship’s captain themselves.

I actually cast hexagram 30 again today, but as I’ve already covered that one, I took advantage of a changing line in the sixth place to turn ䷝ into ䷶. Buckingham chooses not to follow the standard translation of ‘abundance’ as the basis of his story, instead following a historical link to the founding of the Zhou dynasty, portended by an eclipse of the sun. Interestingly, there was just such a ‘ring of fire’ eclipse on the summer solstice a few days ago, visible in West Africa, South Asia and China.

Humanity long ago rationalised away the movements of the celestial bodies through observation of regular patterns and forces. However, in recent decades we’ve come to realise that rather than the heavens affecting us, we affect the heavens, at least in the form of climate and weather. This year saw the warmest May on record globally, and I’m currently sitting in what seems an ‘unusual’ June heatwave in London, predicted to top 30°C (86°F) for several days, following on from several weeks of heavy rain.

At the weekend my flatmates and I finished our rewatch of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, a personally formative piece of culture that I love to return to every few years (alongside the books). As Frodo and Sam draw nearer to Mordor, and Sauron’s power grows, the weather changes. It never really gets light, or dark, with the barren land in a state of constant twilight, almost like a solar eclipse.

While Tolkien may have been simply a reactionary in some ways, with an obvious dislike for all things industrial, it’s very much possible to read LoTR as deeply ecological. The ents are the most obvious example, enacting ecological justice by rising up against their own persecutor, Saruman. They personify a ‘long now’ perspective, guarding against the shifting baseline syndrome that means we often don’t even notice the slow degradation of our world.

Although I was initially buoyed by the appearance of Extinction Rebellion on the scene, I’ve come to find their tactics tiresome, and their relentless negativity counterproductive. Their perspective often seems to flirt so close to nihilism that it falls into it, and I suspect it may be making many bury their heads in the sand even more.

In this short article on Tolkien’s inspiration for climate advocates, Tim Beshara talks about the twin ideas of the ‘long defeat’ and the ‘eucatastrophe’, a sudden and unexpected change of fortune for the better, like Gandalf’s late appearance in the battle of Helm’s Deep, or the eagles who rescue Sam and Frodo from Mount Doom.

Some believe that the sudden global consciousness engendered by coronavirus will bring us to our senses, and finally enable proper cooperation on caring for our planet, and I can only hope this is true. Whatever happens, there is no escape from the charnel ground. But at the same time, all the world is a sacred paradise. So we’d better get to work.

Episode 5 - The Patchwork Girl - Screenshots of Hotchkiss News Clippings

Heyy, Crimson Eagles - Team EndgAme here! We took screenshots of the news clippings found in Ray’s “lair” and wanted to point out a few things we found to be noteworthy:

Not relevant to the story line, but LOLLL at “Marlene King” having the bylines on both articles. Also, goddamnit, Marlene, you couldn’t even write a full article for Taylor (a lot of the text repeats), you had one job!

Part of Nolan’s article says, “Taylor’s friends say she showed no signs of mental illness, and her apparent suicide came as a shock to everyone who knew her.” Now, this makes sense, at least in part, because -- non-spoiler alert -- we all know Taylor didn’t really commit suicide. However, this directly contradicts what Claire went out of her way to tell Ali in Episode 2:

“When my daughter was younger, she was so put together. Everything came easy for her: sports, grades, love. And then something changed when she started teaching. She became paranoid and sometimes delusional... and I tried to get her help, but she didn’t trust me. She didn’t trust anyone, not even Nolan.” Ali asks if Taylor and Nolan were close. “They learned very early that 2 against 1 were great odds, and they stuck like glue any time either one of them got in trouble. One would never turn on the other. This revelation is rewarded by a sympathetic hand squeeze and an, “Is there anything I can do to help?” from Ali. 

We feel this further supports a theory we posted yesterday in which we believe that Claire might have Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy (MSBP), which is a mental health condition that causes a person to either inflict or exaggerate illness (or death) on to a loved one so that they receive admiration, sympathy, and attention from others. We delve deeper into this in the linked post, if you want to check it out. It’s noteworthy to point out that people with MSBP often go to great lengths to convince others, including the person they’re “using” for sympathy, that the circumstances around the tragedy are legitimate. Could Claire have been leveraging knowledge afforded to her by "watching” Taylor on Beacon Guard to induce paranoia and anxiety in her daughter, therefore making her attempts to get Taylor help appear caring rather than sinister?

Her comments about how close Taylor and Nolan were, and how they played “2 against 1 odds” against her could further support why she was watching Nolan so closely before he died. We now have confirmation (as we predicted!) that Claire has suspected that Taylor is alive. If she had reason to believe that Nolan knew this, and that they were both keeping it secret from her, Claire suddenly has a deeply-invested motive to keep tabs on both of them -- if not silence them.

If the MSBP theory feels a little too dark (although we were promised a “darker” series, and know that PLL has a penchant for exploring complex and socially relevant mental health story lines), there’s still a motive as old as time itself at play: greed. In the article about Nolan’s death, they refer to him as “the heir to the Hotchkiss family”, and then go on to characterize Claire as “the only remaining Hotchkiss.”

Can you review #35, the proposal?

Short opinion: Bless this book.  Seriously, bless it.  It has everything that makes Animorphs so good: off-the-wall humor, body horror, chilling tension, horrible technological accidents, 1990s pop culture, Tobias snark, apocalyptic omens, dog pee…

Long opinion:

This book is comic relief in its purest form—literally relief from the horror of the war at a time when we really need an emotional breath.  It’s probably the last book in the series I’d classify as being more light than heavy, but it’s still got plenty of heaviness in there as well. The end result is intensely enjoyable while also being incredibly disturbing.  (Like I said: Animorphs in a nutshell.)

For instance, there’s no small amount of angst and horror in here as well as humor and [found] family bonding.  The whole plot driving this book forward is the fact that Marco’s in a position where he cannot possibly do what’s best for his mom and do what’s best for his dad at the same time, which… Phew.  Too freaking real.  I suspect most people who grew up with two parents have experienced that particular brand of awfulness on some level at some point, and it sucks.  Part of what makes this plot so gut-twisting is that Marco feels he literally can’t turn to anyone for help: his dad’s ignorance of the conflict is its very source, his mom’s obviously “dead,” his friends can’t do anything about the situation and can’t even really empathize, and his stepmother means well but she is the problem.  Ain’t that just family conflict in a nutshell.  The people you most want to lean on for support are the ones who are making the problem.

William Roger Tennant himself also serves as a great reminder that, as Marco points out, Peter’s remarriage isn’t even the biggest problem they face by a long shot.  Tennant is one of my favorite minor characters (I know, I know, big surprise, all the yeerk hosts are my faves) because he’s this silly television personality who achieves almost heroic status in this book when contrasted with the yeerk controlling him.  As much as the yeerk is a megalomaniacal sadist with a hair-trigger temper, Tennant himself is the kind of sweet, gentle guy who genuinely cares about his pets.  He manages to fight the yeerk enough to save the life of poor little cockatiel-Marco.  Not because Tennant knows that that’s an “andalite bandit” he’s holding, but because he doesn’t want to hurt a cockatiel.  It’s a great little moment that goes a long way toward reminding us of the real stakes of the war, and that even ridiculous self-help authors with ponytails deserve to live their own lives free from control.

Anywhoo, this book is also freaking hilarious.  Marco’s narration is a gift to us all: during the whole sequence at the banquet he doesn’t angst about how everything that goes wrong could have possibly been prevented (*cough* Jake *cough*), he doesn’t worry about messing up Hansen’s day (*ahem* Cassie), he doesn’t lose patience with how annoying the plan is proving to be (Rachel), he doesn’t worry about What It All Means (Tobias), and he is not even slightly concerned with whether or not his behavior is befitting of a warrior (Ax).  Instead we get “"Does Batman go from bathroom to bathroom? No. Does the Silver Surfer surf the toilet stalls? No, he does not… Does Daredevil wear other people's dirty clothes? No” and “l am a talking half-skunk, half-spider. A skider. Or possibly a spunk.” We get Marco insisting that he and Ax are “really good friends” to excuse Ax sitting in his lap during the banquet.  We get extensive rants on the pretensions of the restaurant industry.

Plus, we get weaponized Yappy Dog Syndrome.  And weaponized dog pee.  And weaponization of the fact that toy poodles frequently have personalities created by Satan to torture us humans for the sin of having created toy poodles in the first place.  Every so often, as Marco says, the Animorphs really need a win.  In this book, the Animorphs finally get a truly straightforward win—in the form of generating the Sharing huge quantities of bad press through successfully smearing their spokesperson—by way of wig-stealing eagles, Hansen-terrorizing cockroaches, and killer attack poodles.  Because these kids are out to save the world, by gum, and they will do anything it takes to get there.  Even tolerate the existence of a nine-pound monster with a name like Euclid.  I really hope that Peter appreciates just how much his kid loves him and is willing to sacrifice for the happiness of that family.

Where are you now? 

In Iowa City, IA getting my MFA at the University of Iowa.

What's your current project?

Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. by Alice Birch, which is such a challenge and also a dream. I’m in prep for Laterality by my classmate Leigh M. Marshall, which is a poetic drama about family, cancer, and duality. Working on putting together the tour of bad things happen here by Eric Marlin, which just ran at the Edinburgh Fringe. There's a lot going on, fortunately!

Why and how did you get into theatre?

All my friends were in the middle school plays and I was getting left out, so I auditioned for Seussical the Musical. I got really hooked on the exhilaration of performance, but I never got lead roles in anything and by the time I was in undergrad I started to suspect that if I wanted to keep making theatre, it would have to be in a different role. My acting professor told me that what I actually wanted was to direct plays, and the following semester I directed Machinal and realized he was right. 

What is your directing dream project? 

Hadestown, in a community space, where the audience eats dinner over the course of the show and the story happens around and among them. I'm also working on adapting Laura Marling's album Once I Was An Eagle into a stage production with dramaturg Madison Colquette. Staging that would be a dream. 

What kind of theatre excites you? 

I'm excited by plays that are formally inventive, where the form and the content or theme of the play are working in tandem, and it's impossible to imagine the play in any other structure. I love theatre that is intrinsically theatrical, and that couldn't be captured on film or in another medium. I tend to be drawn to play that operate on a political as well as personal level, and I love it when I'm drawn in as an audience member, made complicit in something, and then have my complicity revealed and thrown back at me. I love plays that make me feel like I've been hit by something.

What do you want to change about theatre today? 

I'm interested in changing the space that theatre takes place in. So many theatres feel elite and fancy, and the architecture of the space the audience enters through is rigid and off-putting for people who don't operate in these kinds of spaces. I want to make theatre for a broader range of people than we see in theatres now, and in order to do that, we have to create more welcoming, necessary spaces. You should be able to drink your beer in the theatre. In fact, you should be excited to come to the theatre bar, whether or not you're seeing the show that night. People are willing to pay upwards of $100 for sports tickets and to go to concerts that cost more than most plays. How can we capture that desire for entertainment in theatrical spaces?

Also, let's break the rules more often!

What is your opinion on getting a directing MFA? 

Well, I'm in the middle of one, so it would be awfully hypocritical to be against them. In my experience, they can be great if you know the program that you're going to is going to give you what you want. It's important to know what you want to get out of the program before you apply, because if you're unsure, you may end up in a program that isn't geared to meet your needs. Do you want a rigorous classroom experience? Do you want to get teaching experience? Do you want to be able to see a lot of work while you're in school? Do you want a program that looks more toward design or more toward dramaturgy? What do you want to be different when you graduate? And think carefully about what the program will demand from you financially. There are programs that give good financial packages, so if that's a non-negotiable for you, don't give it up. I've also learned in the course of getting my MFA just how much I've learned from assisting, even when at times assisting felt stagnant. So an MFA is certainly not the only way to learn what you want to learn and get the experience you need to grow as an artist.

Who are your theatrical heroes? 

Sarah Benson, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Mimi Lien, Les Waters, Nataki Garrett, Shana Cooper, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Anne Bogart, Katie Mitchell, Alice Birch, Caryl Churchill, Pina Bausch. I adore actors and they do vital and vulnerable work, but I think not enough credit goes to those stage managers who can just nail the rhythm of a show, designers who unlock the whole play in a single idea or visual element, and dramaturgs, always.

Any advice for directors just starting out? 

We all have imposter syndrome, but don't let it get in the way of listening to your own ideas. It's so easy to observe others' work and think, "Oh I want to do that," but make sure you can find the balance between being inspired and challenged, and trusting yourself. Your greatest strength is that no one sees things exactly the way you do, and no one will interpret a play exactly the way you do. At the same time, as best you can, listen to everyone without judgement. You never know where the idea that makes everything work will come from.

Lupine Publishers | The Discrepancy Between the Length of the Styloid Process and the Symptoms of Eagle’s Syndrome: A Case Report

Abstract

Eagle’s syndrome was a rare condition, and it was not commonly suspected in clinical practice. The elongation of the styloid process (SP) was considered as the main cause of this syndrome. However, many patients who were incidentally found of an elongated SP were asymptomatic. This case report presented a rare case of the bilateral elongated SP with the unilateral symptom. A 59-year-old woman who had come to our attention with the complaint of pain in the right side of the neck, and intensified pain during neck rotation, swallowing and mouth opening. She also complained of pain in the angle of the mandible, the face and otalgia. The computed tomography scans and 3D reconstruction allow us to measure the angulation and length of the SP as well as evaluate the relationship between the SP and adjacent anatomical structures. Surgical excision was performed on the right side although the patient was diagnosed with bilateral elongated SP. The postoperative course passed regularly, and the postsurgical control showed no complaint.

Introduction

The styloid process (SP) is a projection of thin, cylindrical and along bone from the temporal bone, and its location is between the internal and external carotid artery. The mastoid process and the tonsillar fossa are at the posterior and inside it, respectively [1]. The styloid process is one part of the stylohyoid complex including stylohyoid ligament, lesser horn of hyoid bone [2]. Initially, elongated SP syndrome or Eagle’s syndrome was described by an otorhinolaryngologists, Dr. Watt Eagle [3]. The symptoms have diversely presented with ipsilateral cervicofacial pain, referred otalgia, sore throat, dysphasia, headache, and a foreign body sensation in the pharynx. The pain regularly limits in the angle of the mandible, and neck mobility will be reduced when the head rotates to the affected side [1,4]. A physical examination is induced by digital palpation of elongated SP through the tonsillar fossa, and once palpated, the symptoms may intensify. The latter type is characterized by nonspecific symptoms that are caused by compression of the sympathetic fibers and carotid arteries, and the most common etiology of the syndrome that is the mineralization of the stylohyoid ligament [7,9]. Eagle’s syndrome is caused by an elongated SP, on the contrary, the presence of an abnormal length of SP does not result in Eagle syndrome. Here, we present a case with unilateral Eagle syndrome and bilateral elongation of the SP

Case Report

A 59-year-old woman presented to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Khanh Hoa general hospital, Viet Nam with the complaint of pain in the right side of the neck, the angle of the mandible, the face and otalgia that had started approximately one month previously. She simultaneously complained of intensified pain during neck rotation to the right side, swallowing and mouth opening. The patient was uneventful for any surgical or trauma history. In the physical examination, the pain was felt when palpation was performed at the angle of mandible, sternomastoid muscles. Intraoral examination, the SP was not felt on palpation of the tonsillar fossa. No particular abnormalities were detected in the video-laryngoscopic examination and neck ultrasound. Finally, the symptoms did not improve following medical therapy. Thus, the patient underwent a CT scan with the 3D reconstruction of the head and neck (Figure 1). The CT examination revealed a bilateral elongation of the SPs. The SPs were measured 36 mm on the right side and 38 mm on the left side (Figure 2). Lidocaine (2%) was deeply infiltrated into the lateral tonsillar fossa on the right side. After infiltration, immediate relief of the pain partially supported the diagnosis of Eagle’s syndrome. Although the SP on the left side was longer than another on the right side, we decided to do a right styloidectomy because of no symptom revealing on the left side. The styloidectomy was made via the intraoral surgical approach (Figure 3). Antibiotic was administered preoperatively. The surgery was under general anesthesia and the postoperative period passed regularly. The patient was discharged on the second postoperative day. At regular postoperative examinations, complete remission of symptoms was accomplished.

Discussion

The stylohyoid complex (SC) was formed by the SP, stylohyoid ligament, lesser cornea of the hyoid and superior portion of the hyoid corpus. Embryologically, these have been derived from Reicher’s cartilage (the second branchial arch) [6,10]. Based on the successive development of the SC, it could be divided into four sections. The most proximal SC was known as the tympanohyaland which gave rise to the tympanic portion of the SP. The second portion, known as the stylohyal, forming the distal portion of the SP. The third portion (the ceratohyal) degenerated in utero, and it gave rise to the stylohyoid ligament. The most distal portion, known as the hypohyal, forming the lesser cornu of the hyoid bone [10]. The SP originated from the temporal bone behind the mastoid, and it ran anteromedially. Its anatomical variation was rarely changed in course, and it passed between the external and internal branches of the carotid artery. Cranial nerves including n. accessory, n. hypoglossus, n. vagus and n. glossopharingeus were placed medially to the SP. Three muscles (stylopharyngeus, stylohyoid and styloglossus) and two ligaments (stylohyoid and stylomandibular) were attached on the SP [2,5,10]. The length of the SP was individually variable, and the SP was considered as the elongation whenever it was longer than 30 mm. However, the existence of an elongated SP was not pathognomonic for Eagle’s syndrome, because many patients who were found of an elongated SP were asymptomatic [10]. Moreover, the elongation of the SP occurred in approximately 4% of the population [11], and only 4% of this group complained of symptoms [1,12]. Several pathophysiological mechanisms were used to explain the symptoms of Eagle’s symptoms:

a) The proliferation of granulation tissue after traumatic fracture of the SP induced the pressure on the surrounding structure [13,14].

b) Compression of adjacent nerves such as the glossopharyngeal nerve, the trigeminal nerve and the chorda tympani nerve [1]. c) Insertion tendonitis was known as a degenerative and inflammatory change which occurred in the tendinous portion of the connected area of the stylohyoid ligament [1,14]. d) The formation of granular tissue after tonsillectomy or the direct compression resulted in the irritation of the pharyngeal mucosa (involvement of the 5, 8, 9, and 10 cranial nerves) [1]. e) The impingement of the sympathetic nerve in the arterial sheath [15].

Treatment of Eagle’s syndrome was both conservative and surgical. The conservative treatment included nonsteroidal or steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants, anticonvulsants and exercises for the neck [1,7]. The surgical method involved amputating or removing the elongated SP via the intraoral or extraoral approach. Both approaches have been known to have pros and cons in use. The intraoral technique was simpler and took less time as well as avoided the surgical scar; however, its disadvantages were injury of the blood vessels, infection of deep neck spaces and poor visualization of the surgical field. On the other hand, the extraoral technique through cervical incision allowed better visualization of the operative field. This technique, nevertheless, took a longer time, and it could cause injury of the facial nerve. Moreover, the patient postoperatively recovery was longer and resulted in a visible scar [16-18]. Routinely, we took the intraoral approach to our patients. Due to being familiar with the technique, we have not encountered any of the complications which were mentioned above. Also, the injury of vascular and neural tissues was minimal by this method.

Conclusion

The case verifies the possibility that unilateral symptoms can occur in the bilateral elongation of the styloid process. To avoid excessive resection, the side of the styloid process should be selected by the accurate history of the patient, the tonsillar palpation and radiologic confirmation.
