At the beginning of day, rubythroat and trill of a tree frog. Cicadas blade songs of immortality as on an ancient Chinese scroll, and sun through fog burns a promise of warmth. Steps on a path are straight as we angle into light, hearing leaf-whisper of verses to be hymned.
When darkness swallows light, a bat rises lofting his delicate, webbed prison. Waterstriders skim, and a rising bass fins circles on the surface of a lake. Wrapped in the blanket of evening, we watch the circles, listen as they lap to infinity. Stay. Keep watch with us.

Susan was sensible. It was, she knew, a major character flaw. It did not make you popular, or cheerful, and--this seemed to her to be the most unfair bit--it didn't even make you right.

Susan Sto Helit Death being an iconic teacher and mostly-human superhero in Thief of Time.
"Questions don't have to make sense, Vincent," said Miss Susan. "But answers do." -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
Susan did not waste breath saying things like "That's impossible" at a time like this. Only people who believed that they lived in the real world said things like that. -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
"But that's far too difficult for seven-year-olds!" "Yes, but I didn't tell them that and so far they haven't found out," said Susan. -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
"There is practically no limit to the things I find normal." -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
Some people fade into the background. Miss Susan faded into the foreground. She stood out. Everything she stood in front of became nothing more than background. -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
"But I thought they were a superstition!" "No, they're a substition, said Susan. "I mean they're real, but hardly anyone really believes in them. Mostly everyone believes in things that aren't real." -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
She smiled. "Look on the bright side," she added. "We're young, we've got all the time in the world..." She swung the wrench onto her shoulder. "Let's go clubbing." -- Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time

January is the Wolf Moon, Moon of the Strong Cold keening through ice-limbed trees. A lean month when animals lose their fat, when breath blades into lungs. First, the moon grins over the mesa. Then, it smiles and exhales a frosted halo.
The moon arcs toward full and wolves circle, whimpers escalate. Furred and padded feet make flower shadows in the snow. Yellow-eyes ache for the moon's roundness. Then their circle ruptures and zig-zags into a fevered running
with howls loud and thin. The blood too thin.

Ok but we all agree that Esk is Rincewind's mother, right? That she and Simon had a kid, the Ultimate Sorcerer, except that because what they were trying to do was Not Do Magic, what they produced was the Absolute Peak of Not Magic - "what 0 is to maths" as Rincewind once described himself - and that as a result of this ultimate nullification Rimcewind was abld to: carry a primal spell in his head / face a sorcerer on his own and win / survive the dungeon dimensions / avoid death / etc.
We're all in agreement here right?

Discworld inktober Day 16 - Susan Sto Helit
Susan Sto Helit is Death’s granddaughter. She frequently has to solve a bunch of problems that have been occurring because, for whatever reason, Death decided to take a little vacay. I used Michelle Dockery’s likeness because she played Susan in my favorite holiday film, the Hogfather. Here is Susan wielding deaths second favorite weapon.
As Always, Tips Appreciated ♥️

AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
"They're not the same at all!"
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

"But he's...gone. It's not as though I'm ever likely to see him again."
YOU KNOW YOU WILL.
"How do you know that?"
YOU'VE ALWAYS KNOWN. YOU REMEMBER EVERYTHING. SO DO I. BUT YOU ARE HUMAN AND YOUR MIND REBELS FOR YOUR OWN SAKE. SOMETHING GETS ACROSS, THOUGH. DREAMS, PERHAPS. PREMONITIONS. FEELINGS. SOME SHADOWS ARE SO LONG THEY ARRIVE BEFORE THE LIGHT.
"I don't think I understood any of that."
WELL, IT HAS BEEN A LONG DAY.
Terry Pratchett, Soul Music
