Hello! It's been a while since I sent you an ask, so here we go! 😅
Since you are way smarter than me and you understand TRC way better, what are your thoughts on the fact that Glendover was dead?
I remember the first time I read the books I was completely lost on that fact that I even googled some explanations but none of them were enough for my brain to process it.
Also, Noah!
I feel like he was completely forgotten in the last chapters and he simply disappeared as if he never existed, as if they forgot about him!
So, when you feel like it, let me know what you think!!!
💜
Thank you for your always-super-interesting Ask!
I admit that I’ve probably have thought about TRC and Pynch more than is healthy or sane. However, I very much doubt that I am smarter than anyone else, especially when I think over the past 12 months LOL.
I’ll answer the simpler question first:
I think when Noah ‘quietly slid from time’ he also slid from collective memory.
Perhaps this was a way of allowing him to rest, where such powerful people thinking about him along the ley line was enough to pull him back in some way. Or, and this is what I personally think, Maggie was expecting him to play a part in the time loop of the past (that I’m sure was part of the extended TRC storyline).
Which brings us to ... Glendower:
It seemed like Maggie had something in mind as a continuation of TRC and the Court of Glendower storyline, with the Camaro wheel and Blue’s face on the flag and Maura splashing in the bathtub of time or whatever. But idk if that’s being carried on into The Dreamer Trilogy.
The feel of the two series are very different, y’know? The first was Susan Cooper-ish Arthurian-style rural (rather than urban) fantasy. The Dreamer books seem to be more about global para-governmental agencies and art forgery and magical underworld mafias. Maggie seems to have ‘moved on’ in tone and topic - not necessarily an improvement imo.
(We Para G-people Have Been Told The World Will End In Unquenchable Fyre And So We Have Guns Trained On You is not as compelling a plot to me as We Teenagers Are Gonna Find Glendower Cos He’s Still Alive And Ask Him For A Favour For No Reason) contd under the cut...
So the Glendower thread might just be left dangling, like way too many unexplained plot threads in the series.
The main of which was, ofc, was HIM being dead all this time.
Maggie said something like (I’m paraphrasing from memory here): “Of course Glendower was DOA. This was always Gansey’s quest to find himself. I don’t know why everyone was so surprised.”
This to me just means she hadn’t earned her plot twist, hadn’t set it up well enough. A good plot twist must be both surprising and make sense in hindsight. This one was the first, for sure, but not the second.
There were too many red-herrings that needed to be explained then, like Gwenllian (how and why was she alive?) and Artemus (why and how was he even in the fucking story?). I mean, you can’t just say ‘this is magic and inexplicable and not everything needs to be spelled out’. It just seems like lazy plotting to me.
The TRC storylines were the opposite of Chekov’s guns, in a way. There were unexplained firearms everywhere.
All the deus ex machinas : (ETA: the animal bones coming to life), Henry Cheng coming out of nowhere (tho I love him), the Ravens swarming suddenly, Robobee and the Chase into Gansey’s past, him dying on the ley line and so getting a ‘free’ favour even tho he didn’t wake anyone, Cabeswater remaking him by sacrificing itself.
(Actually, Noah’s role was the thing that made the most solid sense to me, and had been brilliantly foreshadowed all through the series!)
That’s a lot of unforeshadowed plot squeezed into a very tiny number of pages. And this from an author who had arguably hinted at things from the very first chapter of the TRB. It really had seemed like the world she had built over the series was a lot deeper and more vast than it ended up being. That was the disappointment, I think. We’d expected more because we’d be led to.
(I personally think TRK would’ve been differently written if Maggie had not been so sick. She says something of the sort in her essay on her illness. It still blows me away that she wrote two books in that state. I’m struggling to write my fic in my post-COVID brain fog, so full respect to her).
So, yeah, it’s not you. A lot of the ending didn’t make sense to me either - and Glendower being dead was a big HUH??
Let’s see if things are clearer by the end of The Dreamers Trilogy.

Main Fandom: Good Omens Crossover: The Chronicles of Narnia Chapter title: A Little Kindness Rating: PG Summary: In London, there is a very particular Bookshop. It doesn’t look like much. It’s small and old and rather dusty. But it’s there all the same and sometimes, it’s even open. Notes: This particular chapter is brought to you by special request from @ashfae :)
Snippet:
So much still needed to be done. It was growing more and more difficult with each passing day. Had it only been one, it would have been terrible enough, but to see each of them laid out, each of them still and silent. No more laughter. No more nonsense. No more tall tales and shared silliness. As she had so often in recent days, Susan found herself brought to a standstill, the void of grief gaping suddenly before her. It felt that, if she so much as risked another step, she would tumble down and never be able to find her way out again. Or perhaps lie broken at the bottom, where none remained to come and find her.

Estou Me Guardando Para Quando o Carnaval Chegar (2019), Marcelo Gomes
Fyre Festival: Fiasco no Caribe (2019), Chris Smith
O Vazio do Domingo (2018), Ramón Salazar
Animais Noturnos (2016), Tom Ford
Someone’s YA Dystopian Future novel is going to feature one character being a natural leader and then revealing:
“I was at the Fyre Festival in 2017.”
The whole camp went quiet, with the exception of Daran, who swore softly. Chelsea looked like she was about to cry; Pete laughed softly with disbelief. “You were at the Fyre Festival?”
Craig nodded slowly, his gaze not leaving the flames in front of him. “One of the first ones in. One of the last ones out.”
Susan furrowed her brow, trying to piece the words together. Would it be inappropriate to ask him? Was it a religious thing? A massacre?
“What’s a Fire Festival?” The question slipped from her lips before she could help it, and suddenly all eyes were on her--all except Craig’s. The fire still flickered inside them.
“There was just one. The Fyre Festival, with a ‘y’. They thought it was clever.” He sighed, stroked his beard, and shifted a little before continuing. “It was supposed to be a simple weekend in the Bahamas. Me and a bunch of other rich kids packed our clothes, gathered our things, and took a plane down south. Everything was going smoothly...but when we hit the first landing strip, that’s when we started to realize that something had gone awry. Instead of seeing a private beach in front of us, we saw a crowded tourist trap. We were promised private jets, fancy boats, the full VIP experience...” His eyes flicked up to her, and though his mouth curved up in a smile, the eyes did not share in it. “But none of that was anywhere to be seen. We thought it would be fine, all we had to do was get our things, make sure they were together, and they’d lead us to the hotel, but...it was already growing dark, and that’s when the luggage arrived. Unloaded from one of those giant storage containers, the big ones, like you see on the docks. Just tossed out to the crowd, one after another. No conveyer belts, no lockers, no express deliveries to the rooms...and it was when I finally got my bag, with a dented crease along the side, like it had been resting under someone’s golf clubs, that I realized: everything had gone wrong.
“Anyway, I’m standing there with this bag, and it occurs to me how hungry I am, so I start looking for the restaurant. I was young, and foolish...fortunately, Gabe was young and foolish, too, so we both headed off to find the restaurant, thinking it would be there.”
His smile widened, showing those teeth again. “There was no restaurant. They fed us sandwiches--small, flat, flimsy sandwiches, with that bread you see on a gas station shelf, and some meat they said was ham. A single wilted piece of lettuce and a piece of rubbery cheese were the condiments, if you could call them that...Gabe said he saw someone with a ketchup packet. I didn’t believe him. Served in a white styrofoam box.
“Anyway, this would be regal fare to us today, but back then, to us, it might as well have been cow dung. I saw three people vomiting their food right back out; the girl next to me saw the same thing, and she became number four. I don’t know how many of us managed to actually choke our way through the meal, or how many of us actually made it back to go onto the plane, but I do know this: there were two thousand of us left in that village when the last boat left the island. Two thousand of us left to fend for ourselves.
“When the sun rose the next day, we were one thousand nine hundred and ninety four. Four of us were missing; two were dead. It was then that I realized that this was going to be a live-or-die situation. I chose to live.”
I would continue with this but it is late and I needed sleep an hour ago.
#fyre festival#and yes I did write that whole thing thinking of Quint's Indianapolis speech#that is the joke#fyrefestival
