Amavasya refers to a new moon night in the lunar month’s first night and first quarter. On that day, though the moon is present, it cannot be seen with naked eyes, hence it is called a no moon day. Moreover, as the moon is invisible, the night is extremely dark. It is one of the most significant days as many ceremonies are performed uniquely on Amavasya Tithi.

Amavasya in April 2020:

Amavasya in the month of April is also known as Vaisakha Amavasya in the North Indian Hindi Calendar and is called Chaitra Amavasya in Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, and Gujarati Calendar. Amavasya will begin at 05:38 am on April 22 and will last until 07:55 am on April 23. The April Amavasya is the first Amavasya as per Hindu Year Sarvari. Meanwhile, as per the Amavasyant Panchayagram, the next day marks the end of Chaitra month and the beginning of Vaishakh month.

Significance of Amavasya:

It is believed that the beginning of Vaishakha Amavasya actually marked the beginning of Treta Yug as well and thus its importance is even increased.

Amavasya falling on a Monday is known as Somvati Amavasya and that falling on a Saturday is known as Shani Amavasya. All Amavasya days are significant to perform Shraddha ceremonies to mollify ancestors.

Many people fast or do pooja/ Sadhana on Amavasya day (new moon day) in the Hindu schedule. It is one of the most loved long stretches of Devi so an extraordinary day to praise and worship HER. Many people also perform havan for their ancestors and offer donations and foods to the Brahmans. Moreover, the day is suitable to perform Kalasarpa Dosha puja as well.

In case an individual is experiencing Pitra Dosh in their Kundali, or are confronting issues in bearing a kid, or if Rahu is crippled and is set in the ninth house, then the individual must fast on Amavasya.
